Project description: The purpose is to examine how difference in food web structure among sites from Uppland to Norrbotten has affected the interaction between purple loosestrife and its two main herbivores. A key issue to explore in this project will be plant odours and how the regional variation in volatiles affect both the plant-herbivore interaction as well as the interaction between the herbivores and their natural enemies. The PhD-project will mainly examine the interaction from the herbivore perspective and will study the role of plant chemistry, herbivore behaviour and population dynamics for the strength of species interaction and for the evolution of species traits. The work will involve both field and laboratory work, behavioural studies and chemical analyses. The chemical work will be done in collaboration with chemical ecologists at KTH and other parts of the work will be done together with ecologists from SLU and Uppsala University.
They are tenable for three years in the first instance (if full-time), although an extension of up to six months may be sought on academic grounds. It is normal for recipients to undertake study on a full-time basis. However, in accordance with strict criteria, the scholarship may be awarded for part-time study. International scholars must undertake study on a full-time basis. It is expected that the scholarship normally will be taken up by 31 March in the year for which it is awarded, although, subject to approval, a later start date may be possible. The date by which a scholarship must be taken up in a particular instance will be made clear in the formal letter of offer for the scholarship.
The policy environment facing the Irish dairy industry continues to undergo considerable change under WTO and CAP reform. Movement away from supply management by the EU and a more liberal global agricultural trading system will involve greater price volatility for dairy commodities. This increase in volatility will translate to an increase in risk for participants in the Irish dairy industry. The adoption of suitable price risk management tools will help to ensure that the Irish dairy industry remain competitive and profitable in an uncertain future.

Commodity futures and options markets are the most transparent tools which have been successfully used to manage price risk in agricultural commodity markets. While there has been some development of these tools for a number of agricultural commodities in the EU (cereals, livestock and energy crops), the dairy sector to date has been largely ignored. This research will provide crucial information on the role and functioning of commodity futures and options markets. In addition the relationships between commodity spot and futures prices will be review and modelled. The results of this exercise will inform industry participants and policy makers on the challenges of developing dairy futures markets and how these markets could potentially be used to manage risk.

It is essential that the applicant holds an honours degree (first class or second class grade 1) in a relevant business related discipline. In addition the applicant must be computer literate with strong quantitative ability. The applicant should be ambitious, self-motivated and possess an ability for problem solving.

The successful applicant will be funded under an Irish Dairy Board Fellowship scheme and will receive a remuneration of €30,000 over an 18 month period. It is envisaged that the successful applicant will commence during March 2010.

The closing date for applications is Friday 19th February 2010.
Tuition fees for the academic year 2010/2011 are as follows:
€ 1,672 for European Economic Area (EEA) citizens
€ 10,506 for non-EEA citizens

Due to to generous subsidies, excellent students from non-European Economic Area countries will receive substantial waiver reductions of up to €7,956, so that only the legal minimum fee of € 2,550 is paid.

During the first year, non-Dutch Research Master students are responsible for their own sources of income. However, we do have a limited number of scholarships available to good students.

PhD candidates:

As PhD candidates at CentER are considered employees of Tilburg University they will receive a starting salary of approximately €2,4001 (gross per month). This salary increases yearly to achieve the final salary of approximately €3,1001 (gross per month). This salary is based on a structure determined by collective bargaining agreements between Tilburg University and the labor unions representing University employees. For detailed information on salary scales, contact the Personnel Office of the Faculty.

1 Please note: This amount is based on a monthly salary, plus holiday and year-end bonus monies.

PhD candidates at CentER are expected to contribute to teaching or research and occasionally to serve as mentors to Research Master students. These obligations generally occupy about 15% of the student's time, and in no case will they exceed 25% of their time. All PhD students will receive adequate training in preparation of these tasks.

For excellent non-Dutch students a number of scholarships are available; namely full Koopmans scholarships of €1000 net per month, or partial scholarships of €420 net per month.

In 2009/2010, ten "Koopmans" scholarships and fifty-six partial scholarships were awarded. Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of academic merit and always include a tuition waiver for non-EEA students.

Students joining the programme in the second Research Master year are eligible for these scholarships as well.

For the PhD phase, a salary is available.

All applicants who want to be considered for a scholarship and/or tuition fee waiver should have submitted their completed applications by 1st February 2010.
Admission opens Jan 11 – Feb 12.

it is advisable that you choose any of the above school alongsides other co-operating UAS for the four choices. Also choose the same course for the schools so that one of them will eventually admit you if your first choice will not. Also try to contact by E-mail or phone when necessary. In case you are admitted, fax or scan your confirmation letter immediately before sending it so that you can secure your study place.

Requirements:
• Apply online on the official website (to any the school)

Language requirement
• TOEFL: each school has it own score but I think 550 paper-based, 230 computer based & 80 internet based is okay or
• IELTS: 6 with at least 5.5 in listening, reading, writing & speaking each) to be on safer side.

Once again, share this information with everybody that is interested studying BSc.

Requirements

• Completed Application form (print it in webpage).
• Academic certificate (certified copies).
• Transcripts of Academic Record.
• Letter of Motivation: In the Letter of Motivation, please cover at least the following topics: Why would you like to study at the University, how would your previous study / work experience support your Master's degree studies, and what are your future plans. You may also include other topics you think might support your application.

• Language Requirement
• TOEFL: each school has it own score but I think 600 paper based, 250 computer based & 90 internet based is okay or IELTS: 6.5 with at least 5.5 in listening, reading, writing & speaking each).

• Research proposal (10-20 pages depend on school).
• Funding plan.

N.B: Try to visit the webpage of the individual school for more information because the requirements differs e.g. language test grade. Tuition is free but you need to state how you will fund yourself. If you choose to be in research field, you can be given fund and a Laptop. Apply directly to school or faculty.

Once again, share this information with everybody that is interested studying PhD.

Tuition is free in Finland for all the levels. It is my wish that we seize this opportunity and use it perfectly.
