Hi everyone! Mais um cartoon para exercitar o inglês. Funciona assim: eu apresento uma imagem com apenas uma fala, faço algumas perguntas, dou um exemplo e vocês usam a imaginação para dar suas próprias respostas em inglês nos comentários.

Como digo em inglês: eu também não

Em português, nós usamos 'também' para tudo. Se alguém gosta de sorvete e você também gosta, diz "Eu também." Se alguém detesta abobrinha e você também detesta, você diz "Ah, eu também." E se alguém diz que não gosta de novela e você também não gosta, diz "Eu também não gosto".

No inglês, a coisa não é bem assim. Esse tópico do "eu também/eu também não" é um daqueles que geralmente aparecem em uma determinada lição do curso básico ou pré-intermediário, com uma explicação e o exercício de aplicação. Depois disso, é matéria dada - mas daí a ter isso incorporado na sua fala há uma certa distância, não é?

Então, aqui vai uma liçãozinha com exemplos simples do uso de duas palavras muito comuns para expressar 'também' e 'também não': too e either. Há outras maneiras de se expressar estas ideias, mas isso fica pra uma próxima!

TOO

Too é a palavra que significa 'também' que todo mundo aprende primeiro:

- I'm tired.
- I'm tired too.

- They are from Rio.
- We're from Rio too.

- My dad enjoyed the show.
- My friend enjoyed it too.

- We're going to the party.
- Jessie and I are going too.

Nota: Também é comum responder com os pronomes objeto (por exemplo, Me too) ou de forma abreviada (- He likes jazz. - We do, too. ao invés da forma longa "We like jazz too.")

EITHER

E na hora de falar "Eu também não"? Aqui se usa a palavra 'either'.

- Susan doesn't like television.
- Paul doesn't like it either.

- I don't know her.
- I don't know her either.

- We didn't do our homework.
- I didn't do my homework either.

- I'm not from Canada.
- I'm not from Canada either.

Nota: Também aqui é comum responder com formas abreviadas (- We don't exercise. - I don't either.) ao invés da forma "longa" (I don't exercise either.)

Nota 2: either pode ser pronunciado ídãr ou ái-dãr.

Percebeu a diferença? Quando estamos concordando com uma sentença "positiva" (em que a pessoa originalmente falou I had, We liked, She will go, They have, etc.), usamos TOO. Quando estamos concordando com uma sentença negativa (em que a pessoa usou We don't, She didn't, Sara will not, They haven't, etc.) usamos EITHER.

Os "verbos estáticos" (aqueles que não são usados em tempos contínuos) geralmente não são usados no Present Perfect Continuous.

I've known him all my life. (E não "I've been knowing him...")

DIA 4 - PARTE 1 - Diferenças entre o Present Perfect Simples e o Present Perfect Continuous

Estude estes exemplos:

Jack's a mechanic. His clothes are dirty. He has been fixing a car all day. (Jack é mecânico. As roupas dele estão sujas. Ele esteve consertando um carro o dia todo.)

O que nos interessa neste exemplo é a atividade (de consertar o carro) e não se algo foi terminado ou não (quantas horas levou ou quantos carros foram), e se teve algum resultado ou não. Neste exemplo, a ação de consertar o carro não acabou ainda ou acabou recentemente.

The car is fixed. Now it is ready. Jack has fixed the car. (O carro está consertado. Agora está pronto. Jack consertou o carro)

Aqui, o que importa é que algo foi feito, teve um resultado. Estamos interessados no resultado da ação (de ter o carro consertado), não na ação em si.

Mais alguns exemplos dos dois tempos. Perceba que os exemplos do Present Perfect Continuous sempre tem a ação como ponto mais importante. Com os do Present Perfect o resultado é o mais importante.

My hands are dirty. I've been fixing the car.

He's been smoking too much recently. He should smoke less.

It's nice to see you again. What have you been doing since we last met?

Where have you been? Have you been playing tennis?

The car is OK now. I've fixed it.

Somebody has smoked all my cigarettes. The pack's empty.

Where's the book I gave you? What have you done with it?

Have you ever played tennis?

Usamos o Present Perfect Continuous para perguntar ou dizer há quanto tempo (how long) uma atividade está acontecendo:

How long have you been reading that book? (Há quanto tempo você está lendo esse livro?)

Mary is still writing e-mails. She's been writing them all day. (Mary ainda está escrevendo e-mails. Ela os esteve escrevendo o dia todo.)

They've been playing tennis since 2 o'clock. (Eles estão jogando tênis desde as 2 horas.)

Usamos o tempo simples para perguntar ou dizer quanto, quantos ou quantas vezes (ações completas) a ação foi feita:

How many pages of that book have you read? (Quantas páginas desse livro você leu?)
Mary has written ten emails today. (Mary escreveu dez e-mails hoje.)
They've played tennis three times this week. (Eles jogaram tênis três vezes essa semana.)

Dica de pronúncia inglesa: teachER, drivER, dinnER…

Hoje apresento atividades para praticar um sonzinho com o qual a maioria das pessoas acaba se acostumando - estes exemplos vão então para quem ainda não incorporou a pronúncia do -ER no fim ou no meio de uma palavra.

Para entender do que estou falando, pense naquela lição que aparece no começo do livro de inglês, e que apresenta o vocabulário de profissões. Várias delas terminam em -ER:

[Obs.: para ouvir melhor você provavelmente precisa de um fone de ouvido. O som ficou um pouco baixo - estou tentando ajustar para os próximos]

teacher, lawyer, engineer, driver, farmer, homemaker

Nas palavras abaixo o -ER aparece no meio ou no fim:

person, termite (cupim), mercy, dinner

Este -ER é pronunciado -ÃR, e não como o "ER" do português - terça, perfeito, vertigem, etc. Ouça:

O texto de hoje usa as preposições de lugar under, inside, in e behind, além de um pouco de vocabulário de personal hygiene. As meninas estão dividindo um quarto de hotel e tentando encontrar suas coisas no banheiro...

Aqui vai:

(Melissa) I can't find the hairbrush. Where did you put it?

(Lucy) It's in the drawer under the sink.

(Melissa) It isn't. I looked there.

(Lucy) Did you look inside the cabinet?

(Melissa) Yeah, it's not there, either... (opening the cabinet) Hey, look what I found! Here's your yellow scrunchy.

(Lucy) My scrunchy - so that's where it was! Hmm... what's that on the shelf behind the shower curtain?

(Melissa) The hairbrush - finally! Now I just have to brush my teeth. Hey, we're out of toothpaste...

(Lucy) I'll call the front desk.

(dials a number)

(Lucy) Hi, this is room 84... Can we have some extra toothpaste?

(Hotel Clerk) Sure. We'll send it right up.

(Lucy) Oh, thanks. And could I have some diet soda?

(Hotel Clerk) Oh, I'm sorry. We don't have any soda left for today. But you can get some soda at the gift shop just outside the hotel.

O inglês como ele é: Likes and Dislikes, parte 1

Se você é como a maioria das pessoas que aprendem inglês, quando quer expressar que gosta de alguma coisa diz I like it ou, se gosta muito, I love it. Quando não gosta de algo, é I don't like it ou, para ser categórico, I hate it. Gostar e não gostar são expressões importantes em qualquer língua; afinal, quantas vezes por dia comunicamos o quanto gostamos ou não de alguma coisa?

Hoje, vou apresentar mais vocabulário sobre esse tópico: graus diferentes de gostar/não gostar para, se você quiser, sair do like/don't like - no próximo artigo, tem mais.

Usando REALLY

Really pode ser traduzido como 'realmente', mas também funciona como 'muito' e 'de verdade' ( e até Sério? se você perguntar Really?). Veja a diferença entre usar really ou não:

My father likes the painting. He may buy it. Meu pai gostou do quadro. Talvez ele compre.

My friend really likes the painting. He's going to buy it. Meu amigo gostou muito do quadro. Ele vai comprá-lo.

They really like this restaurant. They come here every week. Eles gostam mesmo desse restaurante. Eles vem aqui toda semana.

O really também pode ser usado para enfatizar o don't like, é claro:

I don't like sushi, but yesterday I had some. Eu não gosto de sushi, mas ontem eu comi um pouco.

Jess really does not like sushi. She can't even smell it. A Jess não gosta mesmo de sushi. Ela não pode nem sentir o cheiro.

Tammy really does not like cell phones. She doesn't even have one. A Tammy não gosta mesmo de celulares. Ela nem tem um.

Veja que o really, nos casos acima, vem depois do sujeito da sentença (my father, my friend, they, I, Jess, Tammy) e enfatiza que alguém gosta ou não gosta de alguém/alguma coisa.

E olha só como a função do really muda se você usá-lo como nos exemplos abaixo: ele atenua um pouco a negativa.

I don't really like horror movies. We can watch one if you want. Eu não gosto muito de / não ligo muito para filme de terror. A gente pode assistir se você quiser.

She didn't really enjoy her vacation. She was worried about her job. Ela não aproveitou de verdade as férias dela. Ela estava preocupada com o emprego.

Sendo categórico sobre 'não gostar'

Use at all em negativas para ser categórico:

She doesn't like him at all. Ela não gosta dele mesmo/ de jeito nenhum.

I don't like mushrooms at all. Eu não gosto mesmo de cogumelhos/de jeito nenhum.

O can't stand também é ótimo para expressar que uma pessoa "não suporta" alguém/alguma coisa. Veja este exemplo de alguém que não gosta de cogumelos com muita ênfase:

I don't like mushrooms at all. I really can't stand them.

Mais exemplos com can't stand:

My neighbor can't stand cats. He doesn't like them, and he's allergic. Meu vizinho não suporta gato. Ele não gosta deles, e é alérgico.

Valerie can't stand spiders. She's terrified of them. A Valerie não suporta aranha. Ela morre de medo.
