Primary Program Song Review at Home

I am the new Primary Music Leader in our Ward! It’s been fun jumping back into the primary, and getting ready for the Children’s Sacrament Meeting Presentation. I made a song review game for every family in our Primary (we have under 20) to take home.

The basic idea is to choose a puzzle piece out of the baggie, then set it in place over the lyrics to one of our Primary program songs. After singing the song, there is some poster tack in the baggie to use to adhere the puzzle piece to the lyric sheet.

Once the puzzle is complete, they can toss a bean bag, and reverse the puzzle process by singing, then replacing the puzzle pieces into the baggie until the lyric sheet is clear.

The front of the file folder has instructions for the choosing games, and a tiny bean bag attached with washi tape. You can download the files I made here.

Patterned after the Priesthood

I’m bringing back a favorite Visiting Teaching aid I had made back in March of 2011 – it will be a fun addition to the YW lesson on the Priesthood coming up in June. It’s about the Relief Society being organized under the Priesthood and after the pattern of the Priesthood. I scanned a vintage apron pattern, and changed some of the details to quotes and scripture references from the VT message.

You can download the free file here. I printed mine on regular copy paper, then cut it out, folded as shown, and glued the side tabs of the envelope down. Pretty simple, and super cute.

Embark New Beginnings

We had our New Beginnings program last night, and I just wanted to share a few fun details. Our nautical theme comes from the 2015 mutual theme: “O ye that embark in the service of God, see that ye serve him with all your heart, might, mind and strength, that ye may stand blameless before God at the last day” (D&C 4:2).

We made this ship as a photo backdrop. The base of the ship is a table turned on it’s side, with paper taped on. The sky, sail and mast is mounted on a rolling chalkboard. The young women added flags to the sail during the program, as each Personal Progress value was introduced.

Afterwards we took goofy pictures.

The week before our program we made these salt dough starfish, using the tutorial here.

The takeaway gift for the evening was a pack of Chips A’hoy cookies attached to a sticker that we had printed the mutual theme on.

Fun refreshments included cupcakes with sails,

veggies with dip,

fish-shaped jigglers,

meringue cookie sea foam,

and “fish and chips”.

We also had ocean sounds playing before and after the program. It was a lovely way to consider the journey we embark on as we strive to know the Savior better and serve God through Personal Progress.

How Can I Know My Heavenly Father?

These are a couple very simple files you can use to help teach this lesson in January’s Come Follow Me YW curriculum. Our young women are using composition notebooks as classroom journals, and we will tape or staple the pages into the journal after reading, discussing and writing on them. I want to discuss Elder Holland’s talk, “The Grandeur of God”, then read scriptures about coming to know Heavenly Father with the perspective of Elder Holland’s words in mind. YW birthday gifts 2015

We are giving these EOS lip balm “lollipops” to our young women this year for their birthdays.

We cut sucker sticks in half, pushed a thumbtack into the cut end, then hot-glued the tack to the flat side of the lip balm. After covering with cellophane and tying with a ribbon, they really do look delicious!

How to be a Personal Progress Mentor

We are trying to encourage the young women in our ward who have completed, or are near completion of Personal Progress, to mentor others. I wanted to give our young mentors some training, to help them to feel comfortable and confident in this role.

The idea behind this printable is to help them understand basic principles of mentorship: developing a relationship of trust, making goals, listening, following up, and celebrating successes! They can also use it as they meet with their “mentees”, to keep on track with what they are trying to accomplish.

Small and Simple Journal

I’m just re-sharing this post that was spotlighted during Sugardoodle’s recent relaunch. I hope it’s helpful for someone out there!

I’ve created a “Small and Simple Journal” printable to share with you. We have been counseled in the Church to have daily prayer, daily scripture study and weekly Family Home Evenings many many times. These are fairly simple things to do, yet many of us struggle to do them consistently – our family included! I wanted to make some kind of a chore chart to help us accomplish this, which evolved into more of a journal which we will keep in a 3-ring binder as a record of our family’s experiences and progress and doing the small and simple.
