Biased Media coverage of Cyclone Fani

The State of Odisha has hit with a severe cyclone and videos of destruction is so chilling and devastating.Odisha has always been cyclone prone state and many cyclone have hit the coastal state like 1999 the Odisha cyclone,2013 Cyclone Helen & Phaillin and Cyclone Hudhud in 2014.The destruction and the damage caused in 1999 cyclone is fresh in hearts and minds of Odia people. Post that the Odisha government has taken some serious steps and ensured that similar damage is not repeated again. In 1999 the Odisha cyclone nearly claimed 10,000 lives of people and huge property loss.Fani which is categorized as extremely severely cyclone had a very minimum human loss which is commendable and appreciable. It’s not easy to deal with the wrath of natural calamity. The preparedness of the Odisha government, Disaster management teams and alertness of Odia people is a template for every state and country which can be easily adopted to tackle the calamity.Evacaution of 12 lakh people is itself a success story for a poor state of Odisha. The preparedness, alertness and co-ordination between all the government agencies, public is a success case study for the whole world and India off course. To be fair enough the state government should get its due credit of appreciation and recognition as it has established best practice across many cyclones and ensured that 1999 is not repeated again.

All the above enough for a prime spot and national media coverage.But it is unfortunate to see the media houses like Republic,Aaj tak,India today etc did not cover the story.I was stunned and astonished to see there is no mention on success of preparedness of Fani.Social media is the place where many odia people took their frustration,anger on the biased media.Its saddening to see how media has covered the whole issue.Even PM Modi has lauded the spirits of Odia people and Odisha government and media coverage was very less.When there are Mumbai rains and Kerala cyclone there was unprecedented coverage by National media.After the devastation there was also TV campaigns,ads and corporates for rebuilding God’s own country.While in case of Odisha the media has completely forgotten ,only social media like in Facebook and What’s app there are appeal for donation.Also no celebrities also tweeted about Fani and its destruction .This shows the biasness of television media and ignorance of selective journalism .

4.Rajkummar Rao:-Kai po che actor has essayed and potrayed some very key and intersting roles and also deserves a spot in top mentions.Mixture of characters and zonners which he has performed in screen are so amazing and full of content.Also, Shahid which did not get much recognition got its due credit in various awards,film festivals etc.Also his roles in Stree,Citylights,Queen and Trapped are notable mentions

5.Ayushmman Khurana:-The Ex roadie and MtvVJ who tried his luck in Bollywood with his first film becoming huge hit but after that there were serious of flops for 3 years.The actor returned back with some great performances in Dum Laga ke haisa,Andhadhun and Badhaai Ho.

As we all know audiences have rejected big budget movies with big stars,sleazy item numbers and rauchy music but a weak script.Now a days content is the king.Gone are the days when people use to go theatres because of khans and superstars. This week’s release “Raid” of Ajay Devgnn starrer is purely content based movie .Content plays a pivotal role in today’s success of film .

The movie starts directly into the plot with a engaging story line and gripping.The movie from the beginning is able to create lot of suspense and engrave the audiences.Coming to the strong points of the movie

1.The ensemble cast:-Raid starring Ajay Devgn,illena , Saurabh Shukla and amalgamation of various theatre actors fit it to the role superbly. The chemistry between “Baadshaho pair” is very little and its namesake for the movie.Illena role is very small and to be frank enough there was no heroine in the movie.Singham lead actor fits perfectly into the role of perfect government servant who is supremely honest and very determined in following and exercising rules.Saurabh Shukla essaying the role of ‘Rameswar singh’ who is corrupted politician and his accent of Hindi is amazing and makes character watchable.

2.Script and Story line:-Inspired from true story ;The director Raj Kumar Gupta makes the movie really entertaining and the way screenplay and story unfolds is really amazing .Audience gets hooked and stay in edge of seats .Director has done marvellous job in building climax and keep the audience guessing till the last moment. Now a day’s content speaks lot about success and Raid is purely about that.

3.Duration of movie:-Unlike other traditional bollywood movies where there is mixture of romance, action comedy included in the plot whether it is necessary or not. Director has taken utmost care in not including many songs and keeping romance as meagre as possible. The comedy part is taken care by Tauji(Saurabh Shukla) mother.The movie is sharp 120 mins where content and story is in such a fast pace the audiences do not need a pinch of any other elements in the movie

4.Ajay Devgn’s acting:-Ajay acting is to the point and justifies the character to the full extent.It’s one of his best performances on screen. His role actually reminded me of Gangajaal’s character.The confidence and honesty in which he essays the role is impeccable and mind boggling.I am not scared to say that no other actor would have best fit in the role .It’s actually stunning that variations and different kinds of movies he is able to do like Shivaay,Golmaal and now Raid.

The weakpoints in the movie are its dialogues where the whole movie is being shot in a house.There are some sequences in the movie between Taauji and Amay Patnaik where they could have been powerful dialogues written and would have given more weightage to the character.However there are some really impact full dialogues present but they are very little in the whole movie.Secondly,Role of Ileana seems to be trimmed a lot or I would say it was not required for any heroine. Since Raid being inspiration from real life story I felt better characterization of heroine should have been inorder to justify the character

Overall ‘Raid’ is must watch for movie buffs.It is movie worth spending money and it also gives a message that ‘Honesty is the best policy’.So Raid is honest attempt of showcasing Honest government servant performing his duties at any cost not compromising on rules.

Definition of Done is highly essential for an efficient scrum based development.It actually helps in judging the status(completed/resolved) of work items.The status and completeness of work items can only be judged by Definition of Done.DoD actually helps in making the item potentially shippable.The definition of done is different for function,feature and release.In order to avoid confusion or make it more clear what scrum team/master can do is further breakdown the definition of done for better understanding.

Imagine scrum team has a coding task,design task requirement task etc .In that case for each different types of task the DoD can be arrived and can be tracked for the success of sprint.

Definition of Done for various lifecycle tasks are listed below which in turn can result in success of feature

5 Agile metrics: Key for sprint success

Agile software development is not an easy methodology to adopt. There are lot of things which Agile demands and asks for faster execution and more micro level management .So traditional metrics which yields results in traditional software development may not be the best indicator .Agile development I would say more a mindset change rather than a methodological change .So the metrics which would help in defining the health of sprint are:-

1.Burndown chart:-Burndown chart is representation of amount of work completed across time. It is useful for predicting when all of the work will be completed. It gives a predictability variant and indicates to scrum master about the progress of sprint. Normally work in agile is computed in form of story points

2.Capacity:-This is one of key metrics which needs to be computed in start of sprint and needs to be computed in planning ceremony of sprint.Based on the capacity scrum master and project teams discuss and take up the user stories for implementation.Let me give you an example of how capacity is calculated.

Imagine scrum team is of 5 team members and the sprint duration is of 2 weeks

Since 2 weeks so it would be 10 days .Working hours per day are 9 .Working hours per week would be 90

1.Actual working hours since there are 5 team members it would be=90*5=540 hrs per week

2.Daily scrum of 15 mins for 10 days for 5 team members =12.5 (0.25*10*5)hrs

3.Technical meetings and sprint ceremonies excluding daily scrum=20hrs

4.Any planned leaves & holidays (Ex :1.2 team members are going on 1 day leave)=18hrs

So Capacity of team is =540-(5+20+18)=497hrs.Based on the actual capacity team decides and takes user stories for completion of sprint. Available capacity is one of the key indicators for planning a sprint which is accurate and precise.

3.Work item count: This is typically the scrum board or Kanban board which projects the no of tasks,user stories which are in Open,In progress,Closed,Blocked and Resolved states. The states can vary across scrum teams but it is recommended to be kept simple .Various representations of work items can be added

4.Open Age and Cycle time : Open Age and Cycle time are one of key metrics for maintenance and bug fixing projects. It can also be used in Agile projects for finding out the impediments and blockers.Ex imagine if in a scrum the user story is taking too long for closing then metrics like Open Age and Cycle tine will help and give early indicator to scrum master about the work item may not be completed in that sprint .Cycle time and Open age has a direct connection to productivity. The shorter the cycle time, the more things are getting done in a given time box.

5.Defect Density:-Defect density is also one of key indicators for Agile development.Agile principle Comprehensive documentation over Detailed documentation actually stresses over quality rather than quantity.So reviewing of requirements,design by architect or senior person in team becomes key indicator for the quality of work.Defect density plays a pivotal role in identifying the same

1.Usage of tool: Whenever team decides to go for Agile .Team decides and hunts for tool for Agile implementation. To be fair enough agile is more like a methodology, approach rather than tool. Yes there are tools which simplifies Agile implementation but as an Agile team is not mandatory

2.Agile Manifesto:-There are 4 principles present and Agile methodology preaches for successful Agile teams but most of team misunderstand the principles like they do not do documentation, they do not follow any processes and tools. But that is not what Agile preaches .To explain it more in precise way. Agile manifesto says

· Individuals and Interactions more than processes and tools

· Working Software more than comprehensive documentation

· Customer Collaboration more than contract negotiation

· Responding to Change more than following a plan

While the secondary concerns were important the primary concerns were more critical to success.

3.Sprint Duration:-Sprint is a time boxed duration where a demoable product is shown.Where time boxed means duration which could be in days,weeks etc.Almost all the agile teams feel that 2 weeks sprint duration is ideal or recommended for agile development.One week sprint duration becomes too short and 3 weeks sprint duration becomes too long.To be fair enough there is no ideal sprint duration for Agile team .It is completely dependent on the product owner and agile team to decide upon sprint duration.It depends on complexity of work,product and other associated factors

Estimation:-Estimation in Agile is done through story points.Story point estimation is always a relative based unit less estimation.All the teams follow the estimation techniques be it t-shirt size,planning poker etc but all the teams convert the points into days ,hours in order to make it trackable which creates lot of confusion and ambiguity and removes the actual complexity of work to be done

5.Retrospective meetings:-Retrospective meetings are held in end of sprint in order to check what went well for the team,what went wrong but most retrospective meetings are used as tool for blame game from one person to another which ultimately leads to employee dissatisfaction and frustration increases tension

6.Scrum meetings:-Scrum meetings there is thumb rule that daily scrum does not long more than 15 mins but to be fair enough all the scrum meetings exceed more than 15 mins and eventually people discussing other impediments and issues in the meeting .Also if the scrum team is more than 7-10 members then obviously daily scrum duration increases .In that case it is advisable to split the team across smaller teams and conduct scrum of scrums

7.Responding to change:-Agile development principle always believes that a team should not react to changes rather respond to change .Changes should be expected if there are early in development and early in sprint.changes accepted late in sprint actually creates lot of confusion and ultimately the quality of product is made questionable

Estimation is a rough calculation of work that can be done.So traditionally in software industry there were many methods for estimating the work or a activity.The estimation techniques like COCOMO,Function point were mostly used during previous times for estimating tasks.These were all statistically techniques and formulas were used in order to come to a rough value. Then came the era of Project Management and almost whole industry quickly moved towards WBS estimation. WBS commonly known as Work breakdown structure is a method of breaking down the larger activities to smaller sub-divided executable tasks .WBS estimation based on the smaller tasks a time boxed duration and effort is assigned and then estimates are arrived. Mostly WBS estimation is done in a Microsoft project plan and done by Project Manager. It is recommended that he/she should discuss with team and come up with probable estimates but hardly there would be very less project managers who follow this. Ultimately project managers decide on the estimates himself and assigns duration ,effort to the tasks wherever applicable .Eventually when it comes to execution it would result in failures and slippages in project leading to customer dissatisfaction

So I feel that Agile based story point estimation is much fairer and justifiable and easy going on the team if executed properly.Currently almost all the industries irrespective of the mode of execution are moving towards Agile Development.In Agile Story point estimation is a process which is more of a abstract based rather than detailed approach .If we list down the points which story point estimation covers it is better and more focused approach for estimating tasks

1.Unit less estimation:-Story point is unit less relative estimation .So any team members or project mangers cannot covert into hours /days for estimating the task

2.Experience and Learning -Since story point estimation is a brainstorming technique where all team members sit together and estimate the tasks.So fresher in team would always quote more story points to complete while a architect would always quote less points in team to complete a task .That’s obvious as experience and learning comes into picture.So it depends on scrum master to decide upon the task and who suits best for the profile.

3.Risk or Uncertainity:-Story point estimation for a user story developers also consider any risk or uncertainty associated with user story.These risks and uncertainties are discussed in the team and accordingly story points are assigned.

4.Amount of work:-Amount of work which needs to be completed for a particular user story also contributes in estimating a story point.Based on the quantum of work and sub tasks that needs to be completed also helps in zeroing down to a estimate.So I belive a definition of done also plays a important role in contributing towards and summing up amount of work

With above 4 points being considered for estimating tasks.I feel that story point estimation has all aces covered in project estimation.i also believe that this makes the story point estimation technique unique and accurate.Story point estimation is more accurate to reality and it is one of key factors for successful Agile development.It’s better that leaving not only even traditional waterfall and V models use story point estimation techniques to make it more accurate and precise

The title of Bengaluru should be changed from Garden city to Traffic city.The way traffic congestions are increasing and way it is managed,its very unfortunate and it is in a bad state of affairs.IT city which has large amount of companies into IT domain has exponentially grown but the way it is managed and maintained is not good

1.Narrower roads:-All the major points/junctions have narrower roads which leads to congestion in traffic and ultimately increases the travel time. Roads are so small and narrow that if bus comes near the stop then whole traffic comes to standstill. There are no 4 way lanes roads present in entire Bengaluru except in Electronic city which increases the traffic time. There are no enough underpasses, flyovers present in Bengaluru to cater to the increasing needs of traffic. Roads are narrower and congested and in some cases some part of road is not available as it is used for building metro.

2.Metro:-Talking about metro the rate in which metro is progressing will take ages to complete. The deadlines were missed 9 times for just completing the phase 1.Phase 2 construction is in progress and looking at the history I am sure that the phase 2 will also be not completed in stipulated time. Estimated expected completion of phase 2 metro where major residential and office localities like Silk board,KR Puram will be on 2023 which is too far .By that time city would have grown to such an extent that newer metro lines will be needed to inorder to cater the increasing demands of city

3.Local transport:-There is no doubt the rate in which Bengaluru is witnessing growth .It will be next Mumbai ,Delhi and will be one of the busiest city in India .Comparing to Mumbai which has a strong local trains which almost travel to nook and corner of city.Comparing the Mumbai local trains to Bengaluru ,I do not feel that there are enough local trains for daily commutters.People rely upon BMTC buses for transport from one end to other end and narrower and small roads contribute to a longer travel time with a high travel fee.Normally all the buses during peak hours will be jam packed leaving no room for commuter for easy and safe travel.looking at the traffic congestion and situation,its high time that Govt should strengthen railway network ,introduce local trains in order to avoid .Secondly more Ring roads,flyovers,bridge,elevated bridges should be built in order to cater to needs of city.Thirdly newly constructed roads should have separate lanes for BMTC buses and emergency services like ambulances,police vans etc.

Most of Bengaluru crowd is migrated crowd .Most people are from AP,Telangana ,Odisha and West Bengal .Bengaluru which is called a Garden city will soon may get a new tag name as Traffic city.Its high time we raise the voice in loudest extent inorder to wake up the sleeping government

China reminding about 1962 defeat and India replying with statement saying that India of 2017 is far more powerful then 1962.Also awareness being spread by citizens in what’s app and other media about boycotting Chinese products from market. Chinese products in recent times are sold in large volumes in India. Specially mobile phone market of India .Mobile phone marker of India which was once ruled by Nokia and Samsung is now completely occupied by Chinese companies.

Companies like Gionee,Vivo,Lenovo,Oppo,One plus and MI have nearly invaded India by selling smartphones in every nook and corner of India. Talk about tier 1 and tier 2 cities everywhere Chinese smartphone companies have almost started selling smartphones in all medium like online, retail stores and brand alone strores.The craze of Chinese phones is very much high in Indian public which is a plus point for the same.Some really clever branding strategies are used by Chinese companies in order to gain market share .All the Chinese smartphone companies understood that Bollywood and Cricket are the selling points and most important things in India.So these brands are using Bollywood and Cricket to advertise their products and go into the minds of Indian consumer

Tubelight is Dim

Its Eid time and yet again Salman khan has decided to release his movie “Tubelight”.Tubelight had created lot of expectations and buzz which it had created as it had Bajrangi combo of Salman and Kabir khan. The expectations were sky high on the movie but all the movie buffs will almost be disappointed by seeing this movie.There are reasons and several loopholes in movie which makes it cumbersome

Some of the reasons which makes it dissappointing are:-

1.Direction:-Direction of Kabir khan is not upto mark .Kabir khan lacks detailing in the scenes. The screenplay also seems loosely tied. Direction lacks the emotional connect with the audience which was very essential for the movie. There are some scenes in movie and several loopholes in the screenplay, if corrected and presented movie would have much different. Several war sequences also lacks detailing and it lacks the touch of war sequences of “Kabul express”

2.Salman khan’s acting:-In recent times Salman has really improved his acting .Movies like Sultan,Dabangg and Bajrangi Bhaijaan were really good .His presence entertained the audience very much.In tubelight Salman khan lacks his signature and style which makes the movie really boring.In some cases where Salman use to cry in screen it was so unnatural and unreal ,that it could not connect with audience.Salman plays a mentally challenged person in the movie and clearly he needs to go back to the drawing board and his acting is not at all convincing and not at all appealing in Tube light

3.Dialogues:-Tubelight being an emotional movie .The connect with the audience would have been much better,if it had strong emotional dialogues .Dialogues are very normal and not deep enough to get into the heart of audiences.In some cases and scenes where I felt that dialogues could have made really impact in the story there background music was used which was unnecessary and not at all appealing

4.Too long:-Story lines and screen play are week. The movie spanning around for 136 minutes is like really boring and tiresome journey. Till intermission the movie goes in really good pace and creates a very good plot. Post interval movie becomes a chewing gum where I felt it is getting forcefully dragged and climax was simple and ordinary with no twists.Tubelight being officially remake of American move “Little boy” which itself got negative reviews is something hard to understand. I do not understand why do you spend money on remaking a movie which itself was not successful. Even though remake was made, there were several make-ups and touch ups required to make it watch worthy

5.Salman’s character:-Salman’s character is being bullied and criticized by calling him “Tube light” and I do not think Bajrangi Director Kabir Khan has done justice to the name by giving Tubelight.Clearly I could not understand why Laxman singh bisht was called Tubelight .I would say it was tedious attempt rather than a convincing one

6.Chinese actors:-Chinese actor Zhu Zhu was roped in for playing female lead but I did not understand why it was required.With the story line I do not think it was not necessary for any Chinese actor to be casted .Even though the Chinese boy almost justified the role but the Chinese actors I felt was not required.

7. Songs and Music:-Songs and music play a key role in Bollywood film industry.What I feel is that music almost sets the tone of the movie.In tubelight leaving the 2 songs i.e Radio and Nach meri jaan ,rest all songs look quite boring and not catchy.It is not the album which audiences will hear or jingle when they come out from theatres.Also background music is also not in sync with movie.There are scenes where background music could have been improved

Tubelight lacks the light which it wanted to convey but it is very dim and will not able to delight the audiences and for salman khan fans it’s not a easy movie to digest

1.Make in India claim:Freedom 251 is claimed to be India’s cheapest phone with a tag of Make in India concept but the phone as I understand is from a Chinese manufacturer .So how come it is Make In India.Altough the company has claimed that it would be start up manufacturing facility in India but that’s does not suffice that it is Make In India

Pollution in India has reached new heights .Increased road traffic in Tier 1 cities specifically near 44 thousand vehicles are been added in Mumbai City according to study.So nearly that much traffic injected into the road is heartbreaking.Similarly the same situation is present now for all big cities be it Bangalore,Delhi, Chennai ,Hyderabad etc.Delhi was in race recently for becoming most polluted capital of world.Finally the government has realized be it state government or Environment Ministry in centre and also steps that government to be considered to curb pollution

1.Odd even numbering scheme:Well there are crtics who have hammered and slammed this scheme of Kejriwal.But to be fair enough Kejriwal took immediate step in implementing this idea.I cannot comment on the success of this scheme but he had different idea or an immediate innovation to curb rising pollution levels.Similarly all the other state governments should try to implement this scheme or a similar kind of innovating scheme to curb pollution in their corresponding cities

2.Focus on Car pooling and stressing on Public transport:Concepts of car pooling should be encouraged more instead of one person travelling solitarily in a car , he can accommodate more persons and share expenses,save fuel and also lead to less traffic in roads.Secondly much important that governments should focus on Public transport .If there is efficient public transport in road and train then people will not commute in their own vehicles and rely on it.Barring Mumbai Local train ,Delhi’s metro,Bangalore Bus facility etc.There are bits and pieces of good public transport but realization has to spread over all cities and all forms of transport be it air,road ,train etc.Thirdly, government should implement policy of making transport arrangements mandatory for their employees specifically for private companies.Many private companies do not have full fledged transport arrangements for their employees .So governments should try to bring an policy and enforce companies on transportation arrangements

Star sports the numero uno of sport broadcasting in India has gone from strength.Launched in 1993 and nearly 22 years after its inception it has 4 major channels and has become broadcasting major international tournaments be it EPL, Bundesliga or being the prime sponsor of Indian cricket team.It has done it all.The point of interest which I look from outside is the way it is using to create a buzz or build up for a sporting tournament. Let me present you with some examples:-

ICC Cricket World Cup 2015:India was not in great form going out into the world cup after series loss in England and Australia;experts did not gave a chance.The way Mauka Mauka campaign was designed for Indian team and the way new ad was coming post each match is something incredible.Its not like before world cups were not broadcasted but the way Star sports created buzz with Mauka mauka campaign considering the form of Indian cricket team .
