I am a college adjunct faculty English teacher and I wanted a simple edition with notes for my class to read in the fall. I was going to order 20 of these for the class, but I am so glad I first bought one for myself. The paper edition doesn't have any spaces between the speakers, either, so it is difficult to read, even if it were written in language my students, mostly college freshmen, could easily understand. They would give up on this edition. Also, there are absolutely NO NOTES for students that define and explain some of the more obscure vocabulary and written expressions. The text underneath this edition on Amazon did NOT say that there were no notes. It is not helpful AT ALL for a new reader of Shakespeare or a reader who only read it in high school unwillingly. I am going to order something else for my class.

Purchased this as required reading for my sons' high school literature classes. They have used several in the series, and it makes understanding Shakespeare MUCH easier. They juxtapose the traditional play on one side with modern translation on the other....most kids don't realize what amazing stories he tells because the language just seems...well, weird. They can finally understand what the teacher is actually trying to talk to them about -- imagery, figurative language, symbolism and style -- in a way they can actually relate to. Very useful book to expand on why Shakespeare was one of the greatest storytellers of his time.
I did not want to see this movie for years after its release. I consider myself a purist where the Bard of Avon is concerned. I adored the films Henry V & Much Ado About Nothing, both directed and starring Kenneth Branaugh, Richard III starring and directed by Olivier. Period costumes, true to Shakespeare's lines, etc. I began to change when I realized (fairly early on in watching it) that 10 Things I Hate About You, was a delightful retelling of The Taming Of The Shrew. Eventually I watched this and found a gem. From the factions portrayed as rival gangs, to the outstanding delivery of the lines. The true crowning jewel is the over the top performance by the inimitable John Leguizamo. As Tibalt, John is amazing.
When I saw Romeo & Juliet in the theatre -- on its opening weekend -- after the film in the lobby I saw dozens of teenaged girls sobbing in each other's arms. I've never seen anything like that before or since. That alone marks the film as a masterpiece, and nothing any critic can say is relevant next to that emotional reaction. Those sobbing teenagers are absolute proof that any critic who panned this film is a fool.

Di'Caprio wasn't very famous at that point (though I believe he'd already been nominated for an oscar for an indy film). Later that night, I had dinner with friends and predicted that this boy would become the biggest star in Hollywood -- by tomorrow! I was off by a couple of years. Rare in film history has there been such a perfect casting -- Leonardo DiCaprio as Romeo. The mythical balcony scene is freshly designed and executed wonderfully, bringing the myth to life before our eyes. But the crowning glory and superpower of this film is the 'love at first sight' scene - ironic in that there are no words spoken (words being Shakespeare's superpower). It's all done with the eyes by the two young genius actors, combined with inspired camera work and the devastating vocal performance of Des'ree. This is one of the most beautiful, greatest, and most powerful scenes in cinematic history.

What is this emotion -- love at first sight? It might only happen two or three times in our entire lives. It isn't real love. So is it just trivial, adolescent silliness? I think it is much more than that -- and so did Shakespeare. What is our emotional relationship with our desires that can never be? We're haunted forever by the impossiblity of perfect love as much as we were ever thrilled by the fantasy of it. Baz Luhrmann's 'Romeo & Juliet' taps deeply into the impossible longings that never leave us. It is a masterpiece.
This is probably the worst book I've ever received. Characters are not marked. There is no formatting. It is just a wall of text. Don't buy this. Get a different copy of this play.
As an English teacher, teaching Shakespeare can be quite a challenge. For modern students, trying to connect the concepts, theme, and setting of Romeo and Juliet can be quite a challenge. Keeping them engaged in the struggle of Shakespearean language is even more so. This version of the play is accurate and most importantly, entertaining. We, as a class, will read a portion of the play and then I will show this film to help cement ideas, dialogue, and characters. The students love the film, laugh, and respond better to the play than without!
As noted by other reviewers, this edition provides but a fraction of what it promises. There are no annotations, no photographs — a historical impossibility of monumental absurdity — of the author, nor any of the other promised features. Beyond that, it does not even include a dramatis personnae, a hallowed standard for any dramatic work. Even the ratings provided by were for other Shakespeare plays. ... Is there no quality control for works published by ? This was such a sham that it makes me very leery about future purchases from , especially for editions with which I am not familiar.

I have only recently started reading the J.P. Beaumont series of books and I am reading them at the rate of about one a week. This is my first review of one of them. I have read the books in order and I would advise anyone to start reading them in order as the author does constantly refer to what has happened in the previous stories. I enjoy the books very much except for one continuing story line that is in every book. The author portrays the theme that law enforcement individuals and departments are constantly at each others' throat and do not wish to cooperate with one another. I was a reserve police officer for 20 years and I can tell you that, at least here in Tennessee, officers are more that willing to cooperate with each other and that departments constantly exchange information that helps each other. The running battle with Det. Kramer that was promoted to Captain directly from detective would never have happened in a large city police force. In fact, the other officers would have made sure that he would not have even remained as a detective based on his attitude and disregard for other officers. As a police officer, you have to be able to count on each other for your own safety. As I said earlier, I like the books except for the lack of police cooperation. I have just started the next book and sure enough, there is already a problem with a sheriff not wanting another officer (Beau) around. Maybe reading them as they came out at one a year it would not be as irritating.

I had to laugh when I saw that J.P. was off on an Alaskan cruise with his Grandmother and his new Step-Grandfather. I love how he relates to them and how he solves the mysteries.
A good read for sitting around the fire or cruising. As always J.P. Beaumont is a flawed competent cop you want to
root for all the time. Good pace, grandparents on their honeymoon are funny and characters breeze in and out of
the story bringing complications and interest. A cruise, to chaperone the honeymooner, turns into two tragedies
and mysterious characters and places. If you are not a fan of the series, this could make you one and if you are a fan this one does not disappoint.
This book takes place aboard a cruise ship when Beau agrees to accompany his grandmother and her husband on an Alaskan cruise. Beau is retired now so he's no longer with Seattle PD. I missed his partners and other people we've read about in many books. This was not my favorite book but still good enough for four stars.
Expertly written. Characters and plot are believable and interesting. This is a book that is hard to put down. You can vividly imagine these characters and and find yourself trying to figure out what is going to happen next in the story. Love J.P. Beaumont character. Wish he was real.
I had a hard time putting this book down. Once I started reading it action came fast. I've never been on a cruise so details about what goes on on a cruise were interesting. Beau, as usual, gets involved in the crimes that occur. He's retired, but just can't help himself try to catch the killer. I liked the way he dealt with his grandparents and the ladies he met. I'd recommend this book to everyone...
I have read or think I have all of JP Beaumont series. I like this one with his grandparents and seque between his "retirement" and state homocide investigator. The mysteres on the boat have surpriising ending and real life comes into play. I have read other reviews and was those were what kept me from reading the book. The review that suggested things what occurred in thiis book wouldn't happen in real life do not watch the ID channel.
By this time I have read all the J A Jance books, some of them more than once. She is an outstanding author. I started with the J P Bearmont books, went on to the Jonna Brady books, then to the Ali Reynolds books and finally the Walker Family books. I even really enjoyed the J A Jance Casebook which is a collection of her short stories. I definitely recommend all of Jance's books, and I recommend they be read in the order written. Her website gives the dates they were published so its easy to follow them in order.

OK, let me say that I'm really old. How old, I won't say. But by this time, I feel I'm pretty experienced with this aging business. People in their 40s have only just begun. I loved the emphasis that this book puts on keeping your thinking pattern 'young' and of being YOU. (Just because you are older doesn't mean you have to start dressing and acting the part, or use it as an excuse to let yourself go.)

There were a number of suggestions made in the book on how to care for your body. And the range of specific suggestions was very comprehensive - much more so than I expected. There's one wrinkle reduction tip that I'd never heard of before and I'm going to start using it. (Sorry, you'll have to buy the book and read it to find out about it!).

I would have liked to have seen some mention of the importance of using bioidentical hormones, to supplement what the body can't make enough of, as it ages. Most of the symptoms of aging are due to the decrease of vital hormones which now-a-days can be supplemented, to prevent bone and muscle deterioration, and prevent skin from thinning.

This book gives real insights that how we can age gracefully. We always can stay young at heart so what if our body is aging with the time. Very well written with some awesome tips on diets, activities and on how we feel for ourselves.

Worth reading.
I bought this for my mom and she ended up sharing it with my dad as well. They're both from the baby boomer generation and they've recently really started getting serious about taking control of their health/lifestyle choices in order to have the best lives possible during "retirement" (they'll never really retire, haha!) They seem to have really enjoyed this book and told a few friends about it as well, so as far as I'm concerned it was a great purchase.
I thought I was purchasing a book with information on women's health. It was a joke. I cannot believe would be involved with the selling of a book with no content except headlines taken from a magazine.
It is good to read a resume of the best ideas and solutions to help oneself to age well. The writer mentions also some supplements. I might have liked even more information on this item but nevertheless it reads quickly and easily.

This is good guide when it comes to reversing your age. Now you can not just read this guide and wait for results as it need lots of commitment and dedication,
Author is succinct and well researched. I would like read more books she has written. Obviously, not paid by Bloomingdale's make up department nor suffused with over abundance of background research.

Poetry, Such a salvation to me,. Hence the title poetic salvation. I have always written poems even when I was a kid. But I never shared them never saved them just let them go, And that is a shame because it's good to have a retrospective a history so to speak on your life. And poetry to me is a artistic type of journal I suppose. Well it's also a great way to express ones imagination. To take the mind through a journey whatever it may be light or dark. And that is where you have me. I express myself from both sides of that while my love for philosophy as a whole as been an inspiration in itself. I grew up in the Seattle area a very shy boy. Had friends kept to himself. But my imagination it gave me such great company. But even when I was a kid I did not write my imagination so much as just my frustrations and what have you. And of course as I said I threw them away. Too bad it was the paper not the actual feelings. But that was a young me. I started saving what I wrote at the start of 2000, started with love poems. Then depression and then went through a very dark time in my life. But I kept to myself and let it out poetically. I am anti social though I do peek up socially at times. So poetry really gave me a voice something I can express to others. After awhile I started writing in many different ways. Love, Darkness, Philosophy, History just anything that came to mind. I really feel I keep evolving as a poet and you know what we do in life we should never stop evolving. Poetry has just been a salvation to me hence the title poetic salvation. I grew up with dyslexia and depression. And you know what the best medicine has been to treat those? Poetry. Yes, Poetry. I live it. I breathe it and I bleed it. So very important to me. So when you see this title and see some of my work that may sound down or dark and you wonder salvation? Yes, Because I can get it out. It does not stay in me. That is poetic salvation to me! And today I throw away the bad feelings when they do happen. Not the paper!

I found myself re-reading and gleaning further understanding of what he wished to convey to the reader. General Cronje's orders are clear; take Mafeking and drive the British out of Africa but Colonel Baden-Powell, Mafeking's commanding officer, is no ordinary soldier and his defence of the town will be no ordinary fight. Themba Jabulani is a victim of a white man's war. A war where there are strange rules. A war where innocents will be sacrificed and heroes will be made. Jabulani is one of the innocents, struggling to survive with his wife Ntombi and young child. Cronje's letter signals the start of a siege that will last seven months. A strange gentleman's siege punctuated by truces, cricket matches and ferocious fighting.

A White Man's War is a story of a siege, regarded by some as a great adventure but by others as a human tragedy. Baden-Powell would learn from Mafeking and go on to found the Boy Scouts, the greatest youth movement the world had ever seen, while others, less fortunate like Themba Jabulani, would suffer a very different fate.

This book is Graham Watkins’s version of the eight-month siege of Mafeking, which formed part of the Anglo-Boer war. Although he states in the prologue that it is a work of fiction it reads as a statement of historical fact.

The author’s main sources of reference, mentioned in the prologue, are English, i.e. the writings of characters Lord Baden-Powell (British Commander at Mafeking) and British war agent, Lady Sarah Wilson, who was captured by the Boers and released to Baden-Powell days later. A third source is from the journal of trooper, William Robertson Fuller. Watkin’s main source of reference, however, is the Anglo-Irish historian and 8th Earl of Langford, Thomas Pakenham’s book, “The Boer War”.

Herein lies the problem. I would have liked to see a more balanced view of the facts – from sources taken from other participants in the siege – the Baralong people and the Boers. There are many.

I think writing about history will always draw controversy. Consider Baden-Powell’s words in the letter he dictates to Lady Sarah Wilson concerning negotiations for her release from her Boer captors: “Luckily for them, it is not the custom of the English to make prisoners of war of women.” The author may or may not know that, two years after the siege about which he writes, 26 000 Boer women and children were starved, abused and killed by the British in concentration camps, including the one at Mafeking. The Baralong people suffered similarly, albeit from both sides.

Watkins writes, "History, they say, is written by the victors and that is true of Mafeking." But when authors write histories about countries they visited on the odd holiday they should be careful to objectively research the facts, as well as to be considerate of remaining sensitivities about the past.

This book successfully describes the grit and ugliness of war. There is a real-time feel to the action that effectively moves the pace along. I felt for the characters of Themba and Ntombi and found the oddities of social exchanges between the British and Boer leaders interesting – a truce on Sundays, dinners with the enemy and invitations to cricket – I can’t see that happening in modern-day warfare.

Editing of the book is required. My rating is 2.5.

I am military officer, a retired colonel and I am captivated by the boer war. After two tours in Vietnam and as a young man raised in a military family continue to be amazed of lessons not learned and the disregard of the helpless in war. An amazing book! A very gripping and insightful look into one part of the Boer War. This book succeeds in presenting the grit and passions of families and soldiers in war. Watkins portrays the tribes and individual black characters subjected to this colonial conflict with enough depth to create a realistic drama. As a historic novel, Watkin's book, "A White Man's War," offers terse but eloquent accounts of the trauma and victories that all of these people experienced. Watkins uses a realism that is impacting without bogging the story down by overly graphic detail, reminiscent of James Clavell's style for me. The strategies of opposing English and Boer commanders is presented with enough character development to make me feel the turnings of wizened personalities under stress. Excellent Book!
I'm of two minds over this book. On one hand, it's a very detailed account of a battle few people realize impacted the future of war. I'm a big fan of 19th and 20th century history, so the story was fascinating. On the other hand, the book felt more like a blow-by-blow account of what happened than a fictional story. There was no preamble, no setting of the scene. The reader is just dropped right into the middle of the action. The story also bounced quickly from character to character without really developing any of them thoroughly.

My hats off to the author for his phenomenal research. There were times when I was convinced he was actually there. The realities of a protracted siege really came through vividly.

There were three other things I thought the story could benefit from 1) an explanation of local terms like veldt, stadt, et al, 2) clearer section breaks to denote a change in POV, and 3) a careful copy edit to catch the remaining typos.

Ultimately, I think this story was simply too short. If more time was spent developing the protagonists and antagonists, I do think readers would be captivated by not just the war itself but by the characters and their internal/external struggles.
An illuminating, fascinating account of the siege of Mafeking and a period in history that has shaped Africa to this day. The origins and development of the Boer conflict, the innocents that suffered as a result of a war between nations from outside their geographical sphere, is something that was to be repeated time and time again in the great continent of Africa. Here Graham Watkins demonstrates his wonderful writing prowess and his studied historical scholarship. The combination of his style and flair as a writer with his knowledge of history, make him one of my favourite writers. This is a tale of conflict filled with individual tragedy and some bizarre logic that is very much of its time. Cricket matches mid siege on Sundays to boost morale for example are just some of the strange happenings of the siege. That Baden Powell is known more for his founding of the scout movement is perhaps a legacy issue, for at the time he was hailed a hero. I really loved this book not just because I love a bit of history, but Graham Watkins fills the pages of his books with drama that keeps the reader engaged from the very first paragraph. This is my third Graham Watkins book and it will not be the last, Pick it up today 5 stars from me.
This book is Graham Watkins’s version of the eight-month siege of Mafeking, which formed part of the Anglo-Boer war. Although he states in the prologue that it is a work of fiction it reads as a statement of historical fact.

The author’s main sources of reference, mentioned in the prologue, are English, i.e. the writings of characters Lord Baden-Powell (British Commander at Mafeking) and British war agent, Lady Sarah Wilson, who was captured by the Boers and released to Baden-Powell days later. A third source is from the journal of trooper, William Robertson Fuller. Watkin’s main source of reference, however, is the Anglo-Irish historian and 8th Earl of Langford, Thomas Pakenham’s book, “The Boer War”.

Herein lies the problem. I would have liked to see a more balanced view of the facts – from sources taken from other participants in the siege – the Baralong people and the Boers. There are many.

I think writing about history will always draw controversy. Consider Baden-Powell’s words in the letter he dictates to Lady Sarah Wilson concerning negotiations for her release from her Boer captors “Luckily for them, it is not the custom of the English to make prisoners of war of women.” The author may or may not know that, two years after the siege about which he writes, 26 000 Boer women and children were starved, abused and killed by the British in concentration camps, including the one at Mafeking. The Baralong people suffered similarly, albeit from both sides.

Watkins writes, "History, they say, is written by the victors and that is true of Mafeking." But when authors write histories about countries they visited on the odd holiday they should be careful to objectively research the facts, as well as to be considerate of remaining sensitivities about the past.

This book successfully describes the grit and ugliness of war. There is a real-time feel to the action that effectively moves the pace along. I felt for the characters of Themba and Ntombi and found the oddities of social exchanges between the British and Boer leaders interesting – a truce on Sundays, dinners with the enemy and invitations to cricket – I can’t see that happening in modern-day warfare.

Editing of the book is required. My rating is 2.5.
