Wend is a forum for real people, writing real stories about real adventures and real environmental issues. As an independent media group, active in both environmental activism and the outdoors, we realize that part of going off the beaten path means making sure the path doesn’t get beaten. We are a magazine that understands that to advocate for the majesty of nature, we’d be hypocritical to print on paper that comes from destroying it, and thus, every issue of Wend is printed on locally sourced, FSC certified paper.

Our mission is to educate and inspire, as we see travel and experience as revelation that enriches our lives, and makes us better world citizens. We travel not to escape but to challenge ourselves and discover the humanity that every culture, big or small, poor or rich, shares. Sometimes grand adventure takes us to the other side of the planet, atop a towering peak, across an ocean, or even to our own cities, just around the corner. Our narrative style doesn’t focus so much on where we go, or what summit we made, but rather all the nuances of how we get there. We are people who write in our journals, take photographs, and build our understanding of the world one step at a time with humility and respect.

We believe in partnering with outdoor brands and environmental organizations who exist to promote a true green ethic and economy. We have built our growth model so that our love for the earth, in all its vast wonders, translates into a better ability to affect the destiny we face as human inhabitants of it.

For me, coming across IKs and lately, packrafts, was like first discovering mountain bikes; suddenly the outdoors became a whole lot more interesting. With a packboat the hitherto ignored blue bits of the map became new byways to adventure.

Here among the cheap, plastic beach toys were functional, durable and portable boats. They could be backpacked to the water's edge where you could paddle off for a few days after which you air down, roll up and to make your way home.

I've only been paddling since 2005 and was never into hardshells or boating; it was IKs that brought me to the water and an exciting new way of travelling.

Innova Recycling Program

Innova kayaks and canoes are made of rubber. Unlike PVC boats, rubber inflatable kayaks and canoes can be easily recycled.

On Earth Day 2010, Innova proudly rolled out the first inflatable kayak and canoe recycling program in the industry!

If you’ve taken your Innova inflatable boat well beyond its 20-year life cycle, and are now wondering what to do with it, send it back to Innova Kayak. As part of our new recycling program, it will be turned into rubber mulch.

Kayak Shows - Adirondack Paddlefest

May 21-23 2010. Adirondack Paddlefest is held in on Rt. 28 in Old Forge, NY, in the heart of the Adirondacks.

From their site: There will be plenty of paddling, browsing & shopping, and demonstrations to keep you busy all weekend. But if that’s not enough, there will be live music during Paddlefest and a Saturday night concert, an art show and sale, a fitness expo, a canoe race, fun, and more fun! Here are a few things to know to help you plan your weekend at Adirondack Paddlefest.

Admission is $5 per day and Children under 12 are free.

Test Paddle is $15 for the entire weekend & includes admission to Paddlefest. PFDs and paddles are provided. You can bring your own, but be sure to get them tagged at the Test Paddle check-in tent. (Bring appropriate paddlewear and a change of clothes.) Also, read over the Beach Rules so you'll be prepared.

Demonstrations will be held throughout the weekend. It’s also a good idea to check the website for any last minute changes, and to print out a schedule.

Weather: there’s an old saying here in the Adirondacks, if you don’t like the weather, wait ten minutes. Spring weather ranges from cool to warm, wet to dry, in one day! So dress accordingly and bring along a few layers so you can be comfortable.

There is something to be said for tradition…our factory has been in operation since 1956, manufacturing inflatable boats for well over 50 years. A long journey from its beginnings in a small plant in Southern Moravia, on the Czech-Austrian border, the factory now manufactures a variety of rubber and plastic products for automotive and other consumer industries.

Inflatable products (boats and mattress) fabric and design have evolved and a great deal of innovation has gone into the products over the years, but the culture of craftsmanship, quality, and just a plain love of water sports remain the same.

1997: Helios and Junior

Each year our manufacturer produces both the unique fabric – rubber coated nylon or Nitrylon as well as thousands of units of inflatable kayaks, canoes, rafts and yacht tenders. Innova boats were first introduced to the US market first in 1997 with just two models –- our best selling Helios double and Junior (since discontinued and replaced with higher performance boats such as Twist). Following these boats, we expanded our line of kayaks and canoes to include quality white water boats, tough sea kayaks, and durable, safe and easy to handle general recreation boats.

The Early Helios

There were quite a few early Helios kayaks brought into the US prior to 1990s. We would love to find them. If you think you or someone you know have one of the older Helios boats made in our factory, send us a picture, a story of how you obtained it, and the estimated date of manufacturing (please send us the report if you use carbon dating).

We use Ecwid for our shopping cart engine. The data and apps are stored on Amazon EC2. As we understand it, the free version (which we are using) is in beta so that they can work on customer-driven upgrades...until they have a version slick enough to bring to market. It’s been a long winter. Or maybe it’s just that we’re at the tail end of winter that makes it seem so long. Spring invites us in with scented flowers. But still, I find myself longing for warmer, sunnier days, of the type that inspire me to take to the sea where I am able to embrace it with the rhythm of my paddle.

Ouch! My daydream fades away and here I am in the cool Northwest. I calculate my vacation days and wonder if I can manage to take a week of my life back, and head for a warmer destination. I check the weather reports. Greece is sunny but in the 60s…too cold. Key West is in the 70s. Here we are. Puerto Vallarta is in the 80s.

I remember traveling to Yelapa, Mexico…it wasn’t too many years ago. My friend rented a cottage in Yelapa and invited me to join him. We packed a few essential beach things and he brought along his Helios II which easily made it through customs.

Once in Puerto Vallarta I was sure we had arrived. However, the journey had only just begun. We boarded a small water taxi at the “Beach of the Dead” and rode it for what seemed like hours through vigorous seas. Our final leg of the journey was by horse. The cottage was beautiful and remote, and within walking distance of the sea. The gentle heat penetrated my winter skin. I surrendered.

Ever-present, waves danced on the shore. We walked to the beach where we silently inflated our boat and paddled into the blue. That afternoon I was touched by sunshine, water, and deeply relaxing thoughts.

Kayak/Canoe Shows
We just returned from Canoecopia. If you’re a mid-westerner, this is not a Kayak/Canoe show to miss. It’s been going on since 1976, and has grown to over 20,000 annual attendees! The ground is still hard in Wisconsin when folks are dreaming about kayaking and canoeing. The six speaker rooms spill over into the hallways – while speakers vary their topics, their quality is consistently amazing.. One fun offbeat event is the Aluminum Chef Competition in which chefs pit their culinary skills against each other usng outdoor stoves, cook kits, and the type of ingredients you would likely take on your next camping trip.

What’s New?

New Fabric for Helios and Sunny – In 2010 we will have the Helios I and II and the Sunny models available in fully-coated, all-Nitrylon construction. The factory has shifted over from making these kayaks with a LitePack interior. The Nitrylon boats are faster drying and more stain resistant than the LitePack models. Interestingly, the reason for the factory switch was the fussiness of building the complex models with LitePack. If they spilled a drop of glue on the LitePack, it could not be wiped off like it could on the rubber-coated fabric, and the boat would be blemished. We are happy for the change, but still will have some LitePack Helios models available for those who prefer the lighter weight and feel of this material.

New Tracking Fin – The Sunny, Safari, and Twist models will now come with a nylon one-piece tracking fin. The new shark fin shaped skeg is corrosion proof and much quicker to put on/take off with no screws to lose.

New Valves – The factory will be using an upgraded main valve on the 2010 models. This valve will have an improved cap that will be easier to finger-twist on.

New Twist Look – We introduced this 16-pound, backpackable kayak last year. For 2010 we will be getting in a few units in a camo print, in addition to the yellow/gray combo.

We'd Rather be Paddling!

The Innova Group, seller of Innova Inflatable Kayaks and Canoes, is located between Seattle and Vancouver, BC, near the world famous paddling of the San Juan Islands and the Salish Sea.

Innova Kayaks is owned by partners Tim Rosenhan and Paul Neutz. Tim Rosenhan runs the day-to-day operations. When you call, there's a good chance you'll get Tim on the phone (except during the busy season).

Why did we do it?

In the early 90's Innova Kayaks, then known as Innova Recreational Equipment, introduced high-end inflatable touring kayaks to the North American market. Before Innova inflatable kayaks came onto the North American paddling scene, the only inflatable kayaks available were vinyl pool toys or whitewater specific "Duckies" for river outfitters.

As the walls of Eastern Europe tumbled down, Paul visited his hometown, Prague, and couldn't help but notice people in inflatable kayaks paddling the Vltava river which runs through the city. The quality of these boats were unmistakable. They were made of the same durable type of material as Zodiacs and whitewater rafts.

And the inflatable boats were bright orange, a legacy of darker times when the communist government demanded that the inflatable kayaks were made out of bright materials so that people trying to escape could easily be picked out as they floated down the river.

To Paul and Tim, who share a love of kayaking, it seemed that inflatable boats were the perfect marriage of performance and portability...and they would be loved by North American paddlers. The Czech factory, which Paul and Tim later partnered with, had a long history of inflatable kayak construction -- they had been building inflatable boats for the world since 1950.

And we were right!

As we began selling Innova inflatable boats, people began buying them.

People who loved kayaking but had no good place to store their boats
People who loved to travel (with their kayaks)
People who enjoyed the easy transport and quick assembly of an inflatable kayak

And as people began buying them, they began talking about them. And more inflatable boats sold. And people continued to talk about them and buy them and use them and love them. Innova Kayaks have received more awards than any other inflatable kayak brand!

And although Tim would rather be paddling, he always gets a kick when customers send in photos and stories from faraway places involving water, fun, and Innova kayaks.

One of Tim's favorite stories is when real-world adventurer, Kira Salak, took her Innova Safari on a 600-mile solo expedition down the Niger River to Timbuktu. Deep into the Sahara, Kira had to outpaddle some threatening Toureg tribesmen as they chased her in their dugouts. Tim loves that Kira could count on her Innova Inflatable Kayak in a pinch.

Paul and Tim helped raise the awareness of the value, durability, and performance of Innova inflatable kayaks. Recent innovations include the introduction of "PVC free" materials offering the same durability but a greener future.
