Some Useful Information about GUNUNG DATUK

The information board at the start of the trail explains the background to the nameDatuk. It seems the mountain was named after Dato' Perpatih Nan Sebatang who in 1372 organized a gathering of leaders here to elect the future Dato' Lembaga (clan chief).

Datuks in those days must have been a fit bunch of guys.

The Climb

Gunung Datuk is 884m high (2900ft), making it slightly higher than nearby Gunung Angsi which is around 22km away. On my list of Malaysia's Highest 300 Mountains Datuk comes in at number 220 meaning that it is a relatively minor peak but the highest one in Negeri Sembilan state on my list.

The starting point of the climb is probably less than 80m above sea level meaning that the actual height climbed is a solid 800m or so.

The distance covered is 4.6km each way as the bird flies meaning that the actual distance covered is probably considerably longer (sorry I did not measure it!).

It normally takes about 2 hours to reach the top and somewhat less coming down.

The path is pretty well defined all the way except at the very beginning. My sons and I managed to miss the start of the trail and spent half an hour floundering about in the jungle before we returned to the proper starting point.

Strips of red and white or yellow plastic tape are tied round branches periodically to let you know you are on the right track.

From the car park you descend a path to a stream, cross the bridge and find the correct trail (this is where we were initially lost).

The trail starts to climb immediately and the first hour or so is a fairly brutal ascent over twisted tree roots, rocks and dirt.

Bug's Life

You will pass a wrecked gazebo with only the roof remaining intact. It appeared that the legs have been eaten away by termites and we saw a huge termite mound not far away.

We could hear apes whooping away and occasionally glimpsed them high in the tree tops.

Down at feet level were various insects, including a giant red Malaysian centipede (about 6 inches long and very fast moving) and what looked like monster wood-lice which rolled into a ball when disturbed.

We did not encounter any leeches but there has been a prolonged dry season this year. There are probably some after rain.

There were plenty of unusual looking mushrooms and fungus growth feasting on rotting trees.

After a while the path becomes slightly less steep and you might feel a refreshing breeze which is a welcome relief from the draining humidity. (Bring plenty of water/drinks with you. We had 1.5 liters each and it was only just enough.)

Eventually (it seems longer than 2 hours) you arrive at an open area beneath the summit which is presumably used as a campsite.

From here a number of steel ladders enable you to climb up the massive boulders which dominate the peak of the mountain. The ladders look a bit unsafe but they were not as scary as I feared.

On the summit you can rest on the flat boulders, enjoy the magnificent views and feel the cooling breeze. You are supposed to be able to see the Straits of Malacca on a clear day but it was partly hazy on our visit.

Look out for a footstep-shaped impression in one of the boulders which is said to have been made by the legendary Malaysian hero, Hang Tuah.

Coming back down is easier on the heart but hard work for the knees and leg muscles.

Verdict

We enjoyed the hike which was short but strenuous. If you are wondering which to climb, Gunung Angsi or Gunung Datuk, I would recommend Datuk for its superior views.

How to Get to Gunung Datuk

If you are coming from Kuala Lumpur, exit the North-South Expressway at Exit 223.

At the T-junction after the toll, turn left.

You will reach a round-about where you should turn right (3 o'clock exit) sign posted towards Rembau. From Rembau town you will see signposts directing you to Hutan Lipur Gunung Datuk (or Dato') which will take you along route N111. After 15km or so you will see a turning to the left pointing to Gunung Datuk. After a short drive through a rubber estate you will arrive at the Gunung Datuk base camp where you can park your car.

You need to register at the office and pay fees.

Facilities and Fees

The friendly guy at the office told us that we were the only climbers that day (a Wednesday) but that it gets busy at weekends. I try not to be the first person of the day on the trail because of the spider webs (see my Mountain Climbing Tips) but there was no other choice that day.

Fees were increased in June 2011from last year 2011 and are as follows:

Climbing Fee RM5 per person

Camping Fee RM 3 per tent

Tent Hire (holds 4 people) RM5 per tent

The flat space just below the summit looked quite good for camping although there are no facilities apart from a very rustic toilet. I noticed that someone had sprinkled yellow rat poison around the circumference of the camp site so perhaps there is a rodent problem at night. If campers would take their rubbish back down with them rather than trying to burn it the problem might be improved.

CHARAS CAVE / GUO CHARAS

Gua Charas Located at Panching 26km north of Kuantan is Gua Charas. The caves owe their fame to a Thai Buddhist monk who came to meditate here 5 years ago. It is a steep climb up a stairway to the caves’ entrance and one need to be careful.

There is a colossal sleeping Buddha Cave off to the right as well as other Buddhist and Hindu GOD statues "JALA LINGAM" .

If you are into rock climbing or bouldering, the Charas Caves is an ideal climbing spot, which takes approximately 15 minutes to scale to the top. For the more intrepid adventurer , there are a myriad of other caves to explore.

Panching Cave (aka Charas Cave according to sources) is a limestone cavern with unique rock formations and is not only visited by tourists but archaeologists and geographers. It is actually a Thai-Buddhist cave temple with the enthralling statue of the 9 metres reclining Buddha.

Surprisingly, there is an admission fee to visit Panching cave. For an adult, you pay RM2. For a child, you pay RM1.
Be very careful while descending into the cave’s opening as the path is steep and slippery. It’s really amazing to see such an extraordinary big cave when we walked through the entrance.
Again, be careful with your steps, just like any caves, the ground is slippery.
There are notable rock formations in this limestone and granite cave. Does the rock in left pic look like a dolphin? The rock formation circled resembles the goddess Kwan Yin.
There are many altars in this cave.
Here we are. It’s the sleeping Buddha on the altar located deep in the cave.
The Indian devotee who manages this temple cave was distributing joss sticks to people who wanted to make offerings to the JALA LINGAM.

Deepavali Festival in Malaysia

Diwali or Deepavali as it is known in Malaysia is celebrated over 6 days. It is a national public holiday in Malaysia, usually falls around late October or early November. It is also called the Festival of Light.

The Festival of Diwali

Celebrations and rituals together with their attendent myths and legends that surrounds them.

The First Day of Diwali is named after the Lord of Death or Yam. On this day a lamp is placed on the southern end of one's house. Prayers are offered to Yam and in return to request for Shakti or the female energy force to help one complete one's life and return home safely.

The Second Day is known as Naraka Chaturdasi. On this day, Lord Krishna killed the demon Narakasura who was the son of the demon Hiranyaksha and Mother Earth, Bhumi Devi. Narakasura had committed all manner of evil and had stolen 16,000 princesses. It was Bhumi Davi who had requested the Lord Krishna to kill Narakasura. For that reason, Lord Krishna is always glorified by devotees as the personification of good. One who always triumphs over evil.

It was told that on this day, Lord Krishna rode into the capital of Naraka-asuran to battle with the demon or asura. He was assisted by his wife, Sathyabhana. Narakasura had committed so much sins towards the devotees of Lord Krishna that his own mother, Bhumi, had requested that he be destroyed.

Bhumi, out of compassion for her son, prayed to Lord Krishna for Narakasura's moksham or the liberation from the cycle of birth and death. Krishna granted her prayers and thus Diwali was started.

Traditionally one starts the day by praying for the pristine waters of the Ganga River, which symbolically come from the feet of the Lord and enters into the their homes. Hindu devotees will take a bath with oil and hot water in the morning before sunrise on this Naraka Chaturdasi day. They pray for the moksham of Narakasura and of their own. They wear new clothes and eat special Diwali sweets and nourishments. They light lamps and fire crackers to celebrate this festival of light.

The Third Day is known as Dhanteras, so named after Dhanwantari. Dhanwantari is the physician of the gods and a reincarnation of Lord Krishna. He is said to have arisen from the sea with a pot of milk or amrita. Amrita is an elixir of life and gives immortality to whoever posseses it. Dhanwantari is the Father of Ayurveda or the Indian system of traditional homeopathic medicine.

On this Dhanteras Day, Hindu devotees bathe early in the morning and observe a fast till sunset. They light earthen lamps and place it at the gate or entrance to their homes. They wear new clothes and buy a new pot which is placed near the altar.

The Fourth Day is known as Sri Laxmi Puja. It is said that on this day, Lord Vishnu, another incarnation of Lord Krishna, fell in love with Laxmi or Goddess of Wealth. The Hindu business community will start their accounts on this Sri Laxmi Puja day. A Maha Lakshmi Pooja grand ritual is performed on this day to bless the business for the coming year.

The Fifth Day of Diwali or Deepavali is known as Amavasya or the Dark Moon. On this day shops are brightly decorated. People make and buy Diwali or Deepavali gifts to give to their family and friends. They visit each other and share the joys of festival. It is a day when sad or bad things of the past are forgotten and joyful moments are cherished.

Today is celebrated in honor of the return of Rama and Sita from exile. It signifies victory of good over evil and lightness over darkness. It is told that during the reign of rich and prosperous King Dasharth, Rama was exiled to the deepest jungle of India.

The king had three wives and his favorite was Kaikayi as she had saved him during his time of peril. As a result, he had promised her two favours. The king also had four sons and his favorite was Rama, who was the eldest. Rama was very popular with the king's subjects and he was married to Sita.

Just before Rama was to be coronated, Kaikayi reminded Dashrath about his promise to her. She requested that her son, Bharat, be coronated instead of Rama. Her second request was for Rama to be banished from the kingdom. The old reluctantly honored his promises and that broke his heart.

During their exile, Sita was captured by Ravana, the demon. Fortunately, with the help of Hanuman, the monkey god, Rama was able to free Sita. After fourteen year in exile they returned to Ayudthya. This day is remembered as a mark of triumph of good over evil.

The Sixth and Final Day of Diwali is known as Govardhan Puja or Ankut. It is a day when Mt. Govardhan is worshipped. People offer more than a hundred varieties of Diwali sweets and other goodies as offerings to the deities. This ceremony is known as Ankut or mountain of food.

It commemorates the lifting of Mount Govandhan by Lord Krisna who was only seven years old when he performed this feat to protect his devotees from the forces of Indra. Indra was another deity competing for the worship from the devotees.

Thaipusam Celebration in MALAYSIA

Thaipusam is a celebration of the day Lord Murugan, or Subramaniam or Kartikeya as he is also known, received the "Vel" or divine spear from his mother, Mariamman also known as Parvati, to kill the feared demon Soorapadman.

t is celebrated for 3 days in a grand way in Malaysia, particularly in Kuala Lumpur and Penang. In Malaysia, Thaipusam is now a public holiday for the states of Selangor, Johor, Negri Sembilan, Perak, Penang, and the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya.

There is a strong call today amongst Hindus throughout Malaysia to declare Thaipusam a national holiday.

In fact the celebration here is more spectacular than it is in India. The celebration involves a procession of people bearing kavadis.

People generally make a pledge to offer a kavadi in order to obtain blessings from Murugan.

This is especially so when one seeks for the return to health of one's child or loved ones who is sufferring from an incurable disease like cancer or other terminal diseases and seek divine intervention.

By observing the throngs every Thaipusam, you can't help but believe in the divine powers of Lord Murugan in fulfilling the prayers of the penitents.

The Legend of Thaipusam

In Hindu mythology it was told that there was once an instruction by Shiva to his dwarf sage, Agastya, to install 2 hillocks at a southern part of India. Agastya in turn instructed his disciple, Idumban, to do the deed. Naturally he was not able to lift the enormous load and sought help. It so happened that a poorly dressed boy was passing by at that time and Idumban sought his help.

The boy however, refused and instead claimed that the hillocks actually belonged to him. This enraged Idumban who then wanted to teach the boy some respect.

Alas, it turned out that the boy was indeed Murugan, and who was Idumban to teach the mighty Murugan.

Idumban then pleaded for forgiveness. He also made everyone who comes to the hill bear a burden in the shape of a hillock as a form of worship to Murugan. In return Idumban was spared and his wish to deliver the hillock for his master, Agastya, granted.

And every worshipper who bears a burden in such form were granted their wishes. And that was how the legend came to be known as Thaipusam.

Visitors and devotees from all over the world come to Batu Caves in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, during the celebration of the festival. If you come around the early part of the year, try to time your visit with this festival which is usually around end of January or early February. It is held during the full moon of the Tamil month of Thai. Come witness this spectacular celebration.

The Grand Procession

The main part of the celebration involves the procession of devotees from the mother's temple, Sri Mahamariamman Temple, in the Kuala Lumpur China Town area to Batu Caves. It is a journey of 13 KM done on foot, barefoot.

The day before the procession begins, the murti is cleansed and elaborately adorned. The murti normally resides in the mother's temple. On the day of Thaipusam, the murti sits regally on a bullock drawn chariot and heads toward the Batu Caves. The majestic silver chariot towers 21 feet or almost 7 meters above ground. The journey usually takes about 8 hours.

The Kavadi

It is either made of wood or steel formed is such a manner that it can be balanced on the shoulders of the penitent. It is then decorated with peacock feathers, flowers and other decorations. The peacock feather is symbolic of the vehicle of Murugan.

The most amazing kavadi is the Vel Kavadi. It comprise of a movable altar which is mounted onto the penitent with hooks pierced into his back and chest to anchor the kavadi.

The simplest form of kavadi is to carry a jug of milk balanced on one's head.

Some will be carrying pots of milk. And some will be skewered on their cheeks. Some even have their tongues skewered.

Some will bear many hooks with attached objects like lime, oranges or even coconuts on their backs and chest.

You will notice that these devotees are in a state of a trance and thus does not feel pain or discomfort.

For couples that have wished to have babies and have their wishes fulfiled will carry their babies draped in saffron robes and balanced on sugar cane stems throughout the journey.

Chanting of Vel Vel

They are accompanied by drummers, flutists and an entourage of friends, relatives and well wishers. Along the way they make few stops to allow worshippers to offer prayers.

Some devotees also smash coconuts on the road to symbolize good over evil. All the way you'll hear the crowd chanting "vel vel" referring to the spear.

Climbing the 272 Steps of Batu Caves

Before ascending the 272 steps to the main temple, they will cleanse themselves at the nearby Batu River. They then proceed to the final part of their journey. The central partition of the stairway is reserved for these penitents. The other devotees and well wishes will take the peripheral partition of the stairway.

In the temple, priests will sprinkle consecrated ashes onto the devotees and remove the hooks and skewers from their bodies. Miraculously, no blood is spilled and no scar remains to be seen on their skewered cheeks and bodies after the event is over.

Preparation for the Penance

Thaipusam preparation for the penance involves a period of two weeks to one month before the event. During this perion, devotees will

shaving their head bald
perform regular prayers.

St Anne Church - The Annual Feast Celebration!

St Anne Church - History

St. Anne history can be trace back since 1833, when there is some Chinese and Indian Catholic followers from Batu Kawan settled in the foothills of Bukit Mertajam. There are actually peasants who had come to clear the land for cultivation.

St Anne Church was started by French missionaries from the Paris Foreign Mission Society that started their missionary work in the Far East as early as the 17th century. The chapel was name St. Anne because she was the most popular among the French missionaries.

Highly regarded as mother of Mary, St. Anne is the
virgin who give birth to Jesus Christ. Many believe that St. Anne have been born around 50 B.C in
either Nazareth or Bethlehem. Catholics believer observe her feast day on 26th July every year. It
is known between 1840 to 1860, the first church to be built in Bukit Mertajam was on top of the hill.
Today, the site of that small chapel is the 15th and final station of the Cross which devotees make in their pilgrimage.

A bigger chapel was built in 1865 to accommodate the congregation that is growing bigger day after
day. It is built just behind the wall of taps of St. Anne water. As the water is filtered by the soil,
this spring water is cleaner and healthier than the tap water.
The historic St. Anne old church was built in 1888 under the leadership of Fr F.P Sorin. He later died in 1907 and was buried at the entrance of the Church. This
Church which is now named "Shrine of St Anne" is the main spot to celebrate of feast of St. Anne every year.

In the aftermath of the Second World War in 1948, communist activities threatened the political stability of the then Malaya. The grounds of the church were deemed a prohibited area due to communist activities in the surrounding hills. Fearful that the Chinese community in Bukit Mertajam would be sympathetic to the Communist movement, the British Government relocated them to new villages.

The Old Church, located in a "black area", where Communist activities were regarded as strong, became a prohibited area. As the results of this, all church service was conducted at the Convent a distance away. A church building was later erected to serve the relocated congregation and served through out the "Emergency" period for 48 years.

In 1977, Fr Peter Pang became the Parish priest of St Anne's church. He started the move back to the ground of the Old Church, building an altar shed in front of the Old Church. Further restoration was carried out, including the reinstallation of the stained glass and the church bell - there were originally two, but one of them was lost during the Japanese Occupation.
St Anne Church Feast

As the Feast of St. Anne received increasing numbers of followers, it soon became necessary to construct a new and bigger church complex. The new church complex was begun in May 2000, and was dedicated on the St. Anne's Feast Day of 26 July, 2002. This church blends Minangkabau roof design with Gothic architecture to create one of the most imposing structures in Penang. The spacious interior has a seating capacity of more than 1800, easily making it the biggest church ever built in the northern region of Malaysia. The tiny fragment measuring about 3mm is house within a golden monstrance placed near the altar. Pilgrims old and new will always make an effort to catch a glimpse of this relic, surely one of the holiest to be found
in the Catholic faith.

Today, this church is not only well known in Malaysia but also all over the world. St Anne Church annual feast that draw hundreds of thousand of pilgrims is nothing short of amazement. The large crowd that came to the feast is the testament that St. Anne church is no doubt one of the amazing discoveries in Penang. At the
annual feast, the 188 year old church play host to pilgrims comprises Catholics and also non Christians praying for health and blessings. Many who came here fulfilled their vows by lighting candles, offering flowers and attending mass and novenas.

It is such a wonderful event filled with excitement and joy that showcase the unity of people from every part of the world. Pilgrims bathed in a sparkling sea of light took part in a candlelight procession. They came from not only from Malaysia but from Thailand, Singapore, Philippines, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, India, Australia, New
Zealand and even from as far away as Europe. This marks the important day for pilgrims to the thank her for countless prayers answers and petitions granted.

Most of the road near the church will be closed and police personnel will be mobilize to divert the traffic during this period. My advice to you is that, try to come with transport that has been prearranged for you (eg. buses) as traffic will be chaos and the parking fees is very expensive.

There will be no problem finding the church once you reach Bukit Mertajam. Just follow where the crowd goes and I guaranteed that you can't go wrong. I've provided a map below, just in case you ever need one.

One thing to note is that if you're to come together with your children, make sure that they are within your reach to prevent any untoward incident. You do not need to bring any candles or flowers with you when visiting St. Anne as plenty will be on sale here. Temporary stall at the church compound are set up to sell flowers, candles, T shirt and many others memorable. Some of the stall performs magic show as well as art exhibition.

The temple has gained the name Lucky Wild Boar Temple because the wild boars have brought good luck to people who touched them and seek their blessings.

The Om Sakthi Sri Jada Muneesvarar Alayam Indian temple located at the foothill behind Tesco Taiping hypermarket in Kamunting, Taiping, Perak is drawing big crowd of visitors and tourists daily since words spread that many had struck rich winning four-digit numbers (lottery) after touching or stroking the wild boars that turned up at the temple grounds from the secondary jungle in the hills to feed on rice food prepared by temple volunteers.

The temple has gained the name Lucky Wild Boar Temple because the wild boars have brought good luck to people who touched them and seek their blessings.

The main deity at the Om Sakthi Sri Jada Muneesvarar Alayam temple is Lord Muneesvarar also known as the God of Warrior who rides a horse. It is said that the wild boars at the temple belonged to Lord Muneesvarar. Protected by Lord Muneesvarar, the wild boars are said to have special powers to bring good luck to those who seek its blessings. Strangely the wild boars do not look aggressive and allow visitors to caress or stroke its bodies.

When I arrived at the temple about 6.00 pm on Saturday 2nd May, there was a carnival-like atmosphere with stalls selling an assortment of Indian delicacies, flowers and prayer items. Two men wearing light green reflective jackets were seen directing vehicles to open parking space. A woman was spotted canvassing for donation to a charitable organization.

A long line of about 50 devotees was already forming to offer prayers to Lord Muneesvarar and the queue gets longer by the minutes.

At the barricade erected to separate the wild boars and the visitors, there was already a crowd of about 300 people waiting patiently for the wild boars to turn up from the secondary jungle in the hills. It was a scene of frenzied activity when the first few wild boars appeared and followed later by a bigger herd.

The crowd is seen pushing, shoving and stretching out their hands through the wooden barricade with many either holding pieces of white paper with numbers written on it; or ringgit notes of value RM1, RM5 or RM10 denomination; or lottery tickets such as 4-D/Da Ma Cai/Toto and using them to rub against the wild boars. Some even use bare hands to touch and rub the body. The wild boars seem to enjoy all the attention given to them.

By 7.30 pm it was already dark and the crowd had swelled into more than a thousand people as more wild boars about 40 - 50 of them turned up to be fed after hearing the sounds of the temple bell which is rung every evening. So I guess its dinner time for the wild boars when they hear the temple bell sounds! The temple and barricade area is lighted up with fluorescent lamps.

How It Began:

According to a local resident, the phenomenon started a few years ago when a local Chinese electrician carried out some electrical work at the isolated temple. He stroked the wild boars and won numerous four-digit number prizes. With the prize money he had won and saved, he donated RM5,000 to the temple.

At that time there was hardly any visitor except for those who came to pray at the temple. On hearing this, many local Taiping residents who came to touch the wild boar for good luck also reported to have strike it big. Soon words spread like wild fire with visitors from as far as Thailand and Singapore thronging the temple daily in hundreds and could swell into thousands on weekends and public holidays.

Unpleasant Incidents:A local resident reminded visitors to the temple to behave themselves and respect the sanctity of the holy temple and the wild boars! It is said that the wild boars at the temple belonged to Lord Muneesvarar. So a word of caution is: Do not disturb the wild boars at the temple.

She recalled an incident where a visitor suddenly sprawled on the ground with his four limbs and uttered a high-pitched cry, as if crying, and behaved with characteristic of pigs after beating the wild boar. He uttered strange sounds that nobody could understand. Fortunately he recovered quickly and was back to his normal self standing on his two feet after offering prayer of apology and forgiveness to the temple God.

She also recalled of a man who suddenly became seriously ill and vomited blood after he took home a young wild boar without permission from the temple. Miraculously he recovered with a clean bill of health after returning the animal.

A Day trip to Maran Temple at Pahang

The Sri Marathandava Bala Dhandayuthapani (Lord Murugan) temple in Maran, Pahang, is one the holiest pilgrimage sites for Malaysian Hindus.

Devotees come from all over the country as well as Singapore to the 120-year-old temple. It is said to be a temple which answers one's prayers.

As the legend goes, a large tree was marked for felling to make way for Kuala Lumpur-Kuantan road, but as the blade of the axe struck it, the tree began to bleed.

As this happened, one of the Tamil workers suddenly went into a trance and pleaded for the tree to be spared. The British supervisor refused. But to his astonishment and all those around him, a figure of a child appeared on the trunk of the tree. The supervisor immediately changed his mind and re-laid the road to avoid the tree.

The place became sacred and the temple was constructed soon after.

Sri Marathandavar Bala Dhandayuthapani Alayam, Maran (Pahang)
This ancient temple has to be one of the greatest spiritual sites in Malaysia. Pangguni Utiram which occurs during the month of March/April is celebrated blissfully in this temple. Numerous devotees come to perform their prayers as well as carry Kavadi. The temple is located in the midst of palm oil and rubber plantations, and is rather secluded. Hence, it is ideal for meditation and spiritual contemplation. Several saints have visited this holy place and have claimed that powerful energy from heaven is frequently directed towards the locality of this mystical temple. Adding to the unique nature of the temple is its mystical origin. The name of the temple 'Marathandavar' means deity of the tree. The tree mentioned in this context is the sacred rudraksha tree. Rudraksha is identified as the eye of Lord Shiva, whereby Rudra denotes Lord Shiva and Aksha indicates the eye. This divine bead is the ultimate holy talisman, as it transforms negative energy into positive energy. Rudraksha beads have been worn by the yogis of India for thousands of years to maintain health and to gain spiritual empowerment.

About 120 years ago, a road was being built from Kuala Lumpur to Kuantan. Many trees were felled to make way for the oncoming road. As one particular rudraksha tree was being cut, the tree began to bleed as if it was wounded. Many of the workers observed the bleeding of the tree, and immediately stopped work. Immediately one of the Hindu workers went into a trance, and declared that the tree should be spared. A British supervisor who was entrusted with the construction of the road refused to this suggestion. Suddenly, a child miraculously appeared on the trunk of the tree and disappeared into this mysterious tree. The British supervisor was overcome with amazement and changed his decision. The road was laid away from the tree and the rudraksha tree was spared. An old man who is believed to be a Murugan devotee planted a Vel at the base of the tree. After that, the tree became sacred and many of the Hindu workers started praying at that shrine.

It has been many years since the incident, and rudraksha tree is now dead. However the remains of the tree are preserved in inner sanctum of the temple. In 1998, a new temple was built which incorporated features of the rudraksha tree. The inner sanctum has a beautiful silver layering that resembles the original rudraksha tree. There are other shrines dedicated to Lord Bhairavar, Lord Idumban and Goddess Naga Amman. Another huge tree is now a focal point in this wondrous place of worship. Devotees pledge requests by placing a stone, coin or a lime on a yellow cloth. Subsequently they tie the cloth onto the tree and humbly utter a prayer. If the request is fulfilled, hence the vow will be fulfilled. The vow could range from donating to the temple, serving food to temple devotees or tying a miniature silver cradle on the vines of the tree. Some people even tie a baby doll onto this bestowing tree as a sign of gratitude. In addition, this temple is renowned for granting boons to deserving devotees. A lame boy had started walking after praying ardently at this temple. Lakshmi, a girl who was unable to speak has been miraculously cured of her disability.

Another interesting story is the dream of the previous Head Priest Sri K.S. Ganapathy. In 1962, he had a dream of a Murugan yogi. It is rumoured that this yogi had lived at the location of the current temple about 200 years ago. In his dream, the yogi was having his bath in a nearby stream. After his bath, the yogi started walking towards the rudraksha tree. All of a sudden the yogi completely vanished into the tree. Appearing again in his dream, the yogi instructed the Head Priest to serve in this amazing temple. Since then the Head Priest Sri K.S. Ganapathy decided to serve this temple for as long as he could.
