Magnetostrictive linear transducers are feedback sensors that give an analog or digital signal relative to the position of a magnet along the waveguide. One of the common questions we are asked is should I use a captive or floating magnet? The answer depends on the application and the environment.

Floating Magnets

Floating magnets are attached to the moving part with the transducer mounted parallel. The magnet is not directly coupled to the transducer and thus an air gap exists between the transducer and the magnet.

Floating magnets overcome the typical issue of debris and sticky fluid buildup overtime on the transducer track or rod. This is the main cause of mechanical failure on a sliding track magnet.

They can be mounted directly on the moving part, so machine wear is compensated, giving you a more realistic position over time. It allows you to monitor machine part wear.

They are easier to mount to the moving part versus a rod and possibly 2 ball or eye swivels- where you have 1 on the magnet and one on moving part.

Magnetostrictive technology has advanced to allow a greater gap between the sensor inside the track and the magnet itself. Distance is dependent on transducer and magnet type.

The technology advances have also allowed slightly more variance in magnet to transducer distance (X) over the length of the device within reason. Also, non- parallel movement (Y) is now more forgiving. Still should not allow both! The transducer should be mounted parallel to the moving part.

There are many options available for floating magnet types.

One issue is they cannot be mounted directly to steel or iron. Insulated mounting blocks are available with the magnets, or you can make your own non-ferrous mount.

EMF or high inductive local interference will also affect floating magnets. In these environments do not use a floating magnet.

Captive Magnets

Captive magnets ride in a track on the transducer and are linked with a mechanical linkage to the moving part.

Captive magnets are used in relatively clean environments.

They are used where you cannot put the transducer body close to the moving part.

A common perception is that the bearing surfaces and swivel eyes will wear with time. This is true only where direction change is sudden and at high speeds. Also -dirt/oil. Usually not an issue.

As position repeatability is the most typical and desired function of any transducer even if play develops it may not be an issue if measurement is only in one direction.

3 more parts to break.

The main reason for captive magnet use? X/Y variance of magnet distance to the transducer will never vary and a floating magnet will not work in the application.

Now you can set up machines and systems with IO-Link devices even faster. Murrelektronik is the first manufacturer to offer "IODD on board" which allows you to "Plug & Play" when integrating IO-Link devices.

An IODD (IO Device Description) file describes sensors and valves. It contains information about the device's identity, parameters, process data, diagnosis data, communication properties and other details. Murrelektronik's new MVK Metal and Impact67 fieldbus modules will have the ability for IODD files (for participating manufacturers IO-Link devices) integrated into the GSD file. If those devices - like IO-Link sensors or valve clusters - are included in an installation, this database is available and can be quickly integrated. Prior to this each new IO-Link master had to be individually integrated into the software taking up valuable time. If a large number of identical sensors had to be connected, the process had to be repeated for each new device on the network - a time consuming and error-prone process.

Now, with "IODD on board", the IO-Link master is configured by the control - and the setup is complete. Just "Plug & Play" and the job is done. You also have the option to integrate IO-Link devices by asynchronous access.

All of Murrelektronik's new IO-Link modules correspond to IO-Link specification 1.1. and are equipped with IO-Link Class A and B ports.

Failure to remove water vapor from factory air can quickly become a costly maintenance headache.

Water vapor and the resulting water condensate are the foremost causes of costly downtime and
maintenance, not the more visible culprit of oil or contaminants, which are easily removed with proper
filtration.

Moisture in facility airlines can cause corrosion, rust and pipe scale which can break loose to block or
adhere to air passageways that can lead to increased pressure drop and loss in machine performance.

Aftercoolers, drip legs and water separators are used to remove water condensate from factory compressed
air. However, this air is still at 100% relative humidity and is still at risk of condensing into water should the
surrounding temperatures drop to its dew point.

In order to increase protection of expensive automation equipment, factory compressed air must remove as
much water vapor as possible to avoid any condensation further downstream.

This is done by lowering its dew point.

How is Dew Point Lowered in Factory Compressed Air?

Drying compressed air at the highest pressure consistent with the facility’s demands will result in the most
economical dryer operation. For most industrial applications, the rule is to first set the pressure dew point to
meet general requirements, then adjust it 20 °F lower than the facility’s lowest ambient temperature.

Hence, factory air dryness or dew point is relative to the application’s specific requirements.

SMC Refrigerated Dryer

Refrigerated dryers are the most common measure to lower dew point. A refrigerated dryer will further cool
the compressed air by removing heat at its inlet side and lowering its temperature dew point down to 37 °F,
then expelling the condensate through an automatic condensate drain. The dryer will then reheat the dried
compressed air back to ambient temperature by recycling the previously removed heat using a heat
exchange process. This reheating of the compressed air to ambient temperature will eliminate “sweating”
cold pipes when working in humid factory conditions.

It is recommended that a coalescing filter be installed upstream from the refrigerated dryer to remove any
compressor oil and other contaminants that may still be trapped in the compressed air to ensure the dryer’s
proper functioning. Oil coating the cooling surfaces decreases efficiency while coalescing filters saturated
with liquid water will reduce its drying capacity.

In circumstances where factory piping is exposed to ambient temperatures lower than the dew point
achievable by refrigerated drying, alternate methods of drying must be considered.

SMC Membrane Dryers

Membrane dryers use hollow fibers composed of a macro molecular membrane through which water vapor passes easily, but is difficult for air (oxygen and nitrogen) to pass through. When humid, compressed air is supplied to the inside of the hollow fibers, only the water vapor permeates the membrane and is drawn to the outside due to the pressure differential between the moisture inside and outside the hollow fibers. The compressed air becomes dry air and continues to flow unimpeded out of the membrane dryer.

A portion of the dry air from the outlet side is passed through a very small orifice to reduce the pressure and purge the outside of the hollow fibers. The moisture that permeated to the outside of the hollow fibers is discharged to atmosphere by the purge air which in turn creates a low partial pressure allowing the dehumidification process to continuously perform.

By altering the air flow rate and membrane configurations, pressure dew points from +55 °F to -44 °F can be achieved. Membrane air dryers are a cost effective solution for point-of-use applications for pharmaceutical manufacturing, packaging, laboratory environments and other applications.

SMC Desiccant Dryers

Desiccant dryers pass air through beds of desiccant, an absorbent material such as silica gel or activated alumina, which adsorb water vapor to its surface to effectively lower dew points to temperatures well below that which a refrigerated dryer can achieve. Heatless regenerative models use a pair of desiccant beds which alternate in service while the off-line bed is regenerated via a pressure swing adsorption process. Pressure dew points from +16 °F to -40 °F and beyond can be achieved with a desiccant dryer.

Both membrane and desiccant dryers are adversely affected by the presence of oils or liquid water and must be protected with a quality coalescing filter.

What is the Appropriate Dew Point?

Over specifying an application’s or a facility’s dew point can be very costly due to exorbitant energy bills just as the maintenance costs for water vapor damage to product lines can be for an under specified dew point.

Drying the entire factory compressed air supply to -10 °F dew point is unnecessary and extremely wasteful. It is a sensible practice to dry the compressed air to a dew point 20 °F lower than the factory’s lowest ambient temperature then subdivide each compressed air supply by application using zone or point-of-use membrane or desiccant dryers to provide the appropriate level of dryness.

Linear guideways provide a type of linear motion that
utilizes re-circulating rolling elements between a profiled rail and a bearing
block. The coefficient of friction on a linear guideway is only 1/50
compared to a traditional slide and are able to take loads in all
directions. With these features, a linear guideway can achieve high
precision and greatly enhanced moving accuracy. Hiwin Corporation offers
multiple linear guideway series and each series features different options for
sizes, loading capabilities, accuracy, and more.

One of the foremost causes of costly downtime and emergency maintenance is not oil or contaminants, which are easily removed with proper filtration, but water vapor and the resulting condensed water that is trapped in factory compressed air.

Water in facility airlines can cause corrosion, rust and pipe scale which can break loose to block or adhere to air passageways that can lead to increased pressure drop and loss in machine performance.

Machine components will suffer premature wear and parts deterioration from water:

pneumatic cylinders will have their pre-lubricants washed away, corrode and respond slower

solenoid valves’ rubber seals will stiffen, become more susceptible to rupturing and leaking

instrumentation can malfunction even with the presence of a small amount of moisture/water

air powered tools will likely stick, jam and perform less efficiently

End products are also at risk of suffering from quality deterioration because of water:

spray painting will be adversely affected by change in color, adherence and finish quality

industrial ink-jet printers will be adversely affected by change in adherence and finish quality

blow molding plastic bottles’ viscosity and material consistency could be adversely affect

gluing / taping adhesiveness of cardboard boxes could be adversely affected

pharmaceuticals compound mixing and integrity could be adversely affected

food processing may be contaminated because of micro-organism growth

How does Water Vapor Enter Factory Compressed Air?

All atmospheric air contains various contaminants and water vapor which is concentrated during the compression process. The heat generated during compression increases the capacity of the compressed air to hold moisture, thus avoiding condensation inside the compressor. Lubricants used to improve the efficiency and life of the compressor also become part of the contaminant load as do wear particles.

A compressor with a 100 hp capacity, operating at 86 °F ambient temperature, a relative humidity of 80%, compressing air to 100 psi, can produce approximately 30 gallons of condensate during an eight hour shift.

Removing Liquefied Water from Factory Compressed Air

Aftercoolers

The compressed air exiting the compressor can reach temperatures as high as 300 °F, which is unusable for industrial applications. This hot, saturated air will release 70-80% of its excess water vapor if simply cooled to near room temperatures. To achieve this type of cooling and bulk moisture removal, air or water cooled aftercoolers are often employed. Condensed liquid is removed from the aftercooler via automatic condensate drains and disposed.

The air exiting the aftercooler will still be saturated but at a much more manageable temperature. Because the air is at a dew point of 100oF or more, it is still very vulnerable to further condensation into liquid water should it be exposed to temperatures lower than this dew point. The piping in most industrial facilities would provide such temperatures and opportunities for condensation as the air moves throughout the plant.

Drip Legs
The next line of defense for removing the water vapor saturated compressed air is a drip leg. A drip leg is a vertical pipe plumbed at the air drop line (below the horizontal header pipe) to allow for water to be easily and efficiently drained away using the principle of rapid air expansion, or adiabatic expansion, to condensate water vapor into liquefied water.

To broadly summarize adiabatic expansion, temperature is the average heat or kinetic energy of all the particles divided by a given volume of air; if the volume of air is increased through expansion, the heat is divided by a larger volume number, therefore decreasing the air temperature. If the drop in air temperature falls below its dew point, then a condensate will form.

The condensate is then removed by a drain at the bottom of the drip leg which can be automatically or manually drained to avoid overflow of contaminants.

Water Separators
Water separators will use mechanical separation techniques to remove condensed water in bulk from factory air either by directing inlet air into a spiral and using centrifugal force to separate the water out from the compressed air or by passing the inlet air through a special resin filter element with large meshes to trap water particles that will drop down to a collection bowl allowing the compressed air to pass through.

SMC’s AMG Series water separator is capable of removing water droplets up to a 99% water removal rate, using a special resin filter to trap water droplets. The AMG is easy to install and requires no electrical power and can be either a standalone unit or integrated in to a modular air prep system.

However, the AMG water separator is not designed to remove water vapor or lower dew point which will require a refrigerated air dryer or desiccant dryer.

How accurate is an actuator?

The answer to this question is more than a number. Accuracy and repeatability are two important specifications of a linear motion platform. Though they are related, accuracy and repeatability in linear motion systems are not the same thing. The motor, drive and actuator itself all influence these specifications. Sometimes, repeatability is more important than overall accuracy. The relative importance of the two depends on a thorough understanding of your application.

The PR01 family combines independent electric linear and rotary motion in one compact unit. For complex tasks such as closing bottles, threading, carton closing, and pick and place controlled linear and rotary motions are needed. Traditionally this has been done with mechanical solutions. Mechanical solutions lack the flexibility and control needed in automation today.

Using LinMot's PR01 family you have the flexibility to control torque, number of turns, stroke and linear force.

Stats:
Force: up to 1024 N
Peak Torque: 7.5 Nm
Max Speed: 2,000 rpm
TRI-TRONICS® has introduced a unique Laser Sensor with an OLED graphic display that provides visible feedback of proper setup and continual monitoring of performance.

The SMARTEYE® SmartDot Laser Sensor is designed for General Purpose sensing applications, and can also be used for precise, small parts detection at long ranges. The consistently small laser beam is used to detect such things as a tab on a battery, a misaligned or missing bottle cap, or a cross-threaded can lid. The SmartDot Laser Sensor is easily aligned, easily set up, and designed for repeatability of performance from sensor to sensor. It is useful in general purpose applications such as a product detector for vision systems, and simple inspection applications. The sensor can also be used in high precision applications for small parts detection, critical identifying feature inspection, and detection of micro electronic packages.

The SMARTEYE® SmartDot Laser Sensor has an OLED display providing the kind of visual confirming information which makes setup a breeze, and instills confidence in the user as to the longterm performance of the sensor. Displaying all the necessary information to determine proper setup for maximum up-time was the ultimate deciding factor in including the OLED display in this highly capable sensing device. For any applications, either general purpose, or those requiring small spot precision, the SmartDot Laser Sensor from Tri-Tronics is an excellent choice.
          Introduction:

Electric drives and actuators often need to operate in harsh factory conditions that subject the equipment to dust, moisture, heat and vibration. This same environment will also include electrical noise that can disrupt actuator control signals and cause erratic movements or precipitate complete system failure. By understanding electrical noise, system designers can take steps to minimize this interference and ensure higher reliability and maximum performance from electrical drives and actuators. This paper will discuss the
cause of electrical noise and its effects on communication loss, while also providing tips on how to minimize noise and maximize electric drive system performance.

Ultrasonic Sensors - Sound solutions for object detection and measurement

Whether your application is position detection, distance measurement, or the detection of solid, powder, or liquid media: BUS ultrasonic sensors are precise all-around performers. They remain high-performance independent of color, transparency, and surface properties. Even poor lighting conditions and dark, transparent, or highly reflective objects pose no problem.

Ultrasonic sensors show their true strength when long operating ranges with high accuracy are needed. In dusty, humid, and hazy environments, they are sometimes the only alternative. Even in the case of heavy debris, BUS sensors have proven themselves.

Ultrasonic sensors can be used in many application areas

Foil tear monitoring Ultrasonic sensors
with switching output can be used for foil tear
monitoring. If large waves are formed in the foil,
the sensor should be operated as a diffuse
reflective sensor. This operating mode functions
reliably even if the sound is reflected by waves in
the foil.

Height and width measurement
Through the use of multiple BUS M30 or
BUS 18M ultrasonic sensors, three-dimensional
measurements can be made for everything from
small boxes to large cartons.

Presence verification BUS detect filled or
empty pallets and measure the content of
transport containers. If a box or a container is to
be inspected with multiple sensors, they can be
synchronized with each other.

Robot positioning Due to their small dimensions, BUS are
ideally suited for exactly positioning robot arms:
BUS 18M ultrasonic sensors in threaded
sleeve and BUS R06K in block-style housing.

Control foil sag and monitor roll diameter Using an ultrasonic sensor with analog output, the material on a roll or a coil is detected and the roll drive or a brake readjusted. Another sensor with analog output readjusts the material infeed at the dancer roller as a function of the cable loop.
