pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and students, who provide patient care
services in hospital, health systems, and ambulatory clinics. For the past 70
years, the ASHP has been at the forefront of efforts to improve medication use
and enhance patient safety by advocating and supporting pharmacy staffs so they
may help people achieve optimal health outcomes.

The Your Big Idea Challenge
focuses on finding opportunities for all us in Penn Medicine to be more
efficient while continuing to excel at our tripartite mission of patient care,
education and research. The Challenge includes some new features and
enhancements over last year — including the Prove Us Wrong challenge,
where submitters will have a chance to develop an idea even if it doesn’t make
it through to the next round right away. More ideas will be implemented than
last year, and faculty and staff will be provided with training and resources
to pursue ideas independently.

What’s the Cost-Savings Challenge?

Building off the success of the innovation
tournament, this Cost-Savings Challenge provides a forum for everyone to
contribute. A strong cultural
attribute of Penn Medicine is our ability to respond to a challenge by
discovering new and better ways of improving care.

Two eye-opening facts:

* The average lifetime risk in this country of getting colon cancer is six percent, but when a pre-cancerous polyp is present, the lifetime risk increases by three to five times.

* Stage 1 colon cancer has a 90-percent survival rate after five years. At Stage 4 -- when the cancer has spread to other organs -- survival plummets to less than 10 percent.

A colonoscopy will not only find these pre-cancerous polyps, but also remove them, basically eliminating the risk. And yet, for a variety of reasons, many people avoid it.

Presbyterian’s staff and supporters gathered at Vie on Friday, March 15 to celebrate
the 12th annual Presby fundraiser. Together with corporate sponsors, PPMC far surpassed
its previous fundraising record ($88,000 in 2011) raising over $175,000.

Guests attended in
their vintage best to fit this year’s Mad Men-inspired theme, Mad Party, and
enjoyed an evening of glamour, swanky music and classic cocktails reminiscent of
the 1960s.

The true highlight
of the evening was honoring PPMC’s
Chief of Medicine Jack Ende, MD, with the Hospital Hero Award. This
annual award recognizes people who make vital contributions to Presby and share the spirit of loyalty and
passion with the broader Health System.
A special tribute video helped explain why Dr. Ende is truly Penn
Presbyterian’s Hospital Hero.

Proceeds from the
event will support the Penn Mesothelioma and Pleural Program. When treating
patients with mesothelioma or pleural disease, Penn Medicine specialists offer
more treatment options than most other health systems across the country and
around the world. Funds raised at this year’s event will make it possible for
Penn Presbyterian to continue to provide better outcomes to cancer patients and
helps to give patients access to the most advanced treatment, surgical
techniques and clinical trials.

Congratulations to
all the staff and administration at Penn Presbyterian!

the evening’s festivities, and to view the Hospital Hero tribute video, please

Today, both of these ideas are a reality, thanks to the hard work of the Your Big Idea winners and skilled collaborators from all across Penn Medicine. In addition to those winning ideas, we’ve implemented dozens of other ideas that were submitted.

Now, The Your Big Challenge will focus on finding opportunities to be more efficient while continuing to excel at our tripartite mission of Patient Care, Teaching & Research. The Challenge includes some new features and enhancements—including the Prove Us Wrong Challenge, where you’ll have a chance to develop your idea even if it doesn’t make it through to the next round right away. Most importantly, we’ll implement more ideas than last year, by providing you with the training and resources to pursue your teams’ ideas independently.

The new Your Big Idea Cost-Savings Challenge is now open. The deadline to submit your idea is June 7. Winners will be announced the week of June 24, 2013.

PAH just as it does across the US and every year – on May 6 – Florence
Nightingale’s birthday. According to the American Nurses Association, fewer than twenty nurses attended the first
convention of the Nurses Associated Alumnae of the United States and Canada in
1896, which eventually became the American Nurses Association in 1911. And
since there were no laws licensing nurses at the time there was not a single
registered nurse at the first convention. (Click here for A Brief History of
National Nurses Week.)

My how
things have changed! Take a walk through the Units of PAH today and you will
meet RNs pursuing advanced degrees,
achieving professional certification,
and practicing evidence-based care. Along with the unit nurse you see
advanced practice nurses, all working together, helping to improve the course
of health care delivery.

PAH has many long-standing nursing
traditions in the delivery of patient care and
nursing education. Over many decades, our nurses continue to set an example
of how their profession is so much more than just care-giving. Nursing, 21st
Century-style, is a true blended practice. It is where the art of caring meets
the science of medicine to alleviate human suffering, treat and prevent illness
and injury, and contribute to the improvement of the human condition.

“As we celebrate this nurses week I want to
express the tremendous amount of pride, gratitude and admiration I have for my
team,” said Mary Del Guidice, MSN, RN, CENP, chief nursing officer.
“They inspire me!”

All
PAH employees and staff are welcome and encouraged to join the Nurses Week
events. For the complete calendar of Nurses
Week events at PAH, please visit the Nursing homepage on the PAH Intranet or

Friday, February 15, 2013, several of your nurses volunteered to come with
dinner and dessert to celebrate Valentine’s Day with the women. I would like
you to know who these wonderful women were: Kathy Farrell, Holly Strine,
Angela Jorden, Antoinette Gharlet, Bianca Innaurato, Lindsey Hamilton, Shon Johnson,
and Esther Wood.

They not only brought a
delicious dinner but also provided all of the paper goods for Valentine’s Day.
The nurses served the dinner and provided enjoyable conversation. I commend
them for their care, respect, and concern for the women. Blessings on you and
your work at Penn Presbyterian!

Medical
Laboratory Professionals Week is an annual celebration of the laboratory
professionals and pathologists who play a vital role in every aspect of health
care. Since they often work behind the scenes, few people realize the critical work
they contribute to the field of medicine. Lab Week is a time to honor the more
than 300,000 medical lab professionals around the country and right here at PAH
who perform and interpret more than ten billion laboratory tests annually in
the US.

The
PAH Lab has been through many changes over past year as part of the Private
Room Initiative and facility upgrades.

Elliott Professor of Neurology in the Perelman School of Medicine at the
University of Pennsylvania, and Matthew
B. Stern, MD, director of the PD&MDC and the Parker Family Professor of
Neurology in the Perelman School of Medicine. Together, Doctors Hurtig and
Stern wanted to provide comprehensive care to patients with Parkinson’s disease

Tourette’s syndrome and Huntington’s disease. The Center moved in 1997, to its
current location on PAH’s campus at 330 South Ninth Street.

In the 1960s, as the knowledge of cardiology expanded, so
did the skills needed to care for these patients. During this
time, with the inception of the CCU, nursing had to assume the skills
needed for cardiac monitoring and defibrillation, breaking down the barriers
between the scope of nursing and physicians. Having a nurse recognize a fatal
arrhythmia and saving a patient’s life by defibrillation without the guidance
of a physician was the first step in advancing and expanding the role of the
CCU nurse. This was done the very first time at Penn Presbyterian Medical
Center.

According to the American Cancer Society, skin cancer is the most common of all cancers, accounting for nearly half of all cancers in this country. More than 3.5 million cases of skin cancer are diagnosed in this country alone each year. The good news is that, if detected – and treated—in the very early stages, skin cancers are almost always curable.

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month. A free skin cancer screening by Penn dermatologists will be held on Saturday, May 18, from 8 am to noon, at the Perelman Center. Appointments are necessary and space is limited. Call 662-2737 to make your reservation.
