The Marble Temple is the most modern and one of the most beautiful of Bangkok's royal wats.

History

The Marble Temple was built in 1899 by Prince Narai, the half brother of Rama V. Thailand's present king spent his days as a monk here before his coronation. Today, Marble Temple is not only a magnificent Thai temple, but a seat of learning that appeals to Buddhist monks with intellectual yearnings.

What to see

Unlike the older complexes, there's no truly monumental wihaan or chedi dominating the grounds. Walk inside the cloister, beyond the main bot, to view over 50 bronze Buddha images that represent styles from various Buddhist countries and regions.

Behind the cloister is a large Bodhi tree, bought from Bodhgaya, India as a gift for King Chulalongkorn.

Many smaller buildings reflect a melding of European religious designs (such as stained-glass windows) with traditional Thai religious architecture. Even the courtyards are paved with polished white marble.

This is an excellent place to watch religious festivals and processions. Unlike most other temples, monks do not go out seeking alms but are instead visited by merit-makers from 6am-7am.

During the early mornings, monks chant in the main chapel, sometimes so intensely that it seems as if the temple is going to lift off the ground.

Information

Names:

Wat Benjamabophit, Wat Benchamabophit, Marble Temple

Date:

1899

Location:

Si Ayutthaya Rd. The floating of a ‘Krathong' – a banana–leaf cup – is intended to float away ill fortune as well as to express apologies to Khongkha or Ganga, the River Goddess. Some believe that the ritual is meant to worship the Buddha's footprint on the bank of the Narmada River, while others say that it is to pay respect to Phra Uppakhut, one of the Lord Buddha's great disciples.

The Loi Krathong Festival is celebrated nationwide in Thailand, especially where there are rivers, canals or sources of water, with different unique characteristics.

This year, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has joint with Educational Institution and Thai Baot Association to present the Electric Float Procession from Taksin Bridge to Krungthon Bridge and the 12 lighten up buildings and historical sites along Chao Praya River during Loi Krathong Festival.
Thompson, a self-made American entrepreneur and the founder of the world renowned Jim Thompson Thai Silk Company. The house consists of a complex of six traditional Thai-style houses, teak structures that were purchased from several owners and brought to the present location from various parts of Thailand. Construction of the Thai house was completed in 1959. With his natural flair for design and color, and driven by his single-minded dedication to reviving the craft, Thompson soon gained worldwide recognition for his success in rebuilding the industry, for generating international demand for Thai silk. For his invaluable contribution to the growth and development of the Thai Silk industry, Jim Thompson was awarded the Order of the White Elephant, a decoration bestowed upon foreigners for having rendered exceptional service to Thailand. Thompson's success story in Thailand has become one of the most popular postwar legends of Asia. During the Easter weekend in 1967, Thompson disappeared while on holiday with friends in Cameron Highlands, a northern Malaysian resort. There he set out for a walk in the surrounding jungle but never returned. An extensive and extended search failed to reveal any clues about his disappearance. Thus began the Jim Thompson legend. The current Jim Thompson House serves as a showcase of how he had lived while in Thailand. Originally trained as an architect, Thompson fell in love with the rustic design of the Thai House and built his own quarters in a similar style, although there is a distinct fusion of traditional American living as well. The museum is open from 0900-1700 (last guided tour starts at 1630 though) daily. The admission fee is 100 baht and you will need to join the guided tour as you are not allowed to freely wander within the house. They have some of the best guides around and the tour was a very pleasant as well as being enlightening. Do note that indoor photography is not allowed, as with shoes.

Information form http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/6818a/

Erawan Shrine In Thailand

Those who have visited Thailand will admit that there are many facets to the spiritual Buddhist life in this beautiful country.

Hinduism and Animism have integrated themselves and are very much part and parcel of spiritualism in Thailand. This spiritualism has nothing to do with Buddhism but is embraced by all.

A look around Bangkok will reveal many shrines in front of nearly all big buildings. These shrines are nothing but spirit houses to protect the building from any harm. Offerings of food and drinks are regularly made and Thai people pay homage and respect to the shrines while passing by.

One such spirit house was built in the 1950s in front of the Erawan Hotel. It is known as "Erawan Shrine In Thailand". However, the shrine did nothing to protect while the hotel was being constructed. Many accidents occurred during the construction. So the people consulted some spiritual advisers who asked them to relocate the spirit house to its current location. The Erawan shrine was relocated and thereafter the construction went off smoothly with no accidents or mishaps.

Story has it that an old lady prayed for help at the shrine since her business was not doing well. She promised to dance all the way to the shrine if her wish was granted. It so happened that the lady’s business started doing well and she kept her promise.

Today, thousands of people visit the Erawan Shrine wishing for luck in business and love. They make small offerings while wishing and once their wish is granted, people return to the shrine with classical Thai dancers who perform before the shrine.

Erawan Shrine is located at a busy intersection of Bangkok and the skytrain runs overhead in two different directions. The shrines is gilded and features four faces and four arms> Over the last decade or so, it has become busier with garland sellers lining the sidewalk close to the shrine.

A visit to Erawan Shrine is well worth the time and it is located close to Chitlom skytrain station. After visiting the shrine, one can stop at the many shopping centers located in the vicinity.

Source http://www.thailandbuddy.com

Bangkok Pride Festival 2007 ( November 3 - 11, 2007)

Bangkok Pride Festival is a number of community events held throughout the year and culminating with a parade and a community day. Bangkok Pride Festival strives to engender a sense of community among the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Trans gender(GLBT) population in Thailand, and to empower everyone with a stronger sense of pride. Over the years, the Bangkok annual event has undergone organizational changes, resulting in a current focus on the long-held goal that the Bangkok events and parade be created by and for members of the Thai GLBT community, with support from gay and gay-friendly business and civil society sectors—Thai and foreigners alike.
History of Bangkok Pride Festival
Pride celebrations started in Thailand in the late 1990’s and were first organized by Khun Pakorn Pimton with the support of several Thai gay businesses. Under the name of Bangkok Gay Festival, they presented Thailand’s first gay pride parade in the Silom business district in 1999. This parade attracted representatives from Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore and other Asian, as well as Western, countries and subsequently led several other countries to follow with their own events. Many of the hotels are new and offer excellent facilities, swimming pools and great views over the city.

Wat Benjamabophit , Bangkok

Wat Benjamabophit (also spelled Wat Benchamabophit) is called the Marble Temple because of the white Carrara marble of which it is constructed.

Description

Visitor Information
Names: Wat Benjamabophit, Wat Benchamabophit, Marble Temple
Date: 1899
Location: Si Ayutthaya Rd. The place is always busy and chaotic with all the commotion from the GO-GO bars nearby and lots of foreign tourists. This market in Bangkok's notorious nightlife district is often the first and easiest stop for many tourists just arriving to Bangkok, whilst lodging at one of several mid-to-upper-end hotels in Silom. Be warned though, the quality and prices of most items sold are about as real and trustworthy as the girls shaking their wares in go-go bars flanking the area. Both market and go-go bars seem to complement each other well, but remember not to be fooled by first impressions, and to bargain hard.

How to get there: Coming from BTS Siam station, depart at Sala Daeng station and exit down one of the right-hand stairs. Follow the increasing trail of vendors along the sidewalk, and after five minutes, you'll know you're there.
Items at market: Cheap 'brand-name' items, CD's, souvenirs, T-shirts, etc
Open: 18:00 - around 01:00 (every day)
source form http://www.bangkok.com/

Suan Lum Night Bazaar

A mixture of poshly dressed, fresh-from-the-office Thai's and expats along with fisherman pant-clad tourists, Suan Lum could best be described as the VIP outdoor market of Bangkok (where you're always welcome, of course). Covered walkways with centrally-located snack bars provide perhaps the most luxurious (outdoor) market shopping experience in the city. Several bars along with Thai, Italian, German, and even Mexican restaurants are conveniently within the market area, close enough to analyze the crowd while enjoying a drink, yet away from the market's hustle-and-bustle. In the same area, dinner shows featuring classical Thai puppetry can be enjoyed at the famous Joe Louis Puppet Theatre.

On the other side of the market's curious Khmer-looking temple walkway, lies a large outdoor beer garden, food court, and concert venue all rolled into one. Here one can indulge in an assortment of inernational and Thai beers and foods, with international fare either Japanese (yakitori and Asahi) or German (sausage, Paulaner, etc). Beer and food are accompanied by live Thai cover bands performing the latest local and international hits on stage. Also, don't forget to check out the Big Wheel, 'La Roue de Paris' while you're there! And, after a few drinks with friends, head out to one of Silom's many nightclubs.

How to get there: Take the MRT subway to Lumpini station; the market is near Lumpini Park, a short walk from the station.
Items at market: Creative gifts, trendy home items, clothing/jewellery boutique shops by local designers, packaged dried fruits, a few stalls selling the usual market CD's/clothing.
Open: 18:00 - 00:00 (every day)

Suan Lum Night Bazaar will officially close down by the end of April 2007
source http://www.bangkok.com

CentralWorld Shopping Complex

The battle of Bangkok's mega shopping malls to be the biggest and the best has a new outright and undisputed winner: the supermodern, newly launched, revamped and rebranded CentralWorld. With 550,000 square metres of retail space and a total area size of 830,000 square metres that is 30% larger than any other shopping centre in central Bangkok, CentralWorld is now officially the largest lifestyle shopping complex in Southeast Asia, with an unrivalled mix of products and services at prices that put the fun back into shopping for Thai consumers and tourists
A world of shopping in one
According to the official Fact Sheet, "every trip (to a mall) should be about the fulfillment of one's desire to buy something that one loves - rather than regretting what one cannot buy..." With a range of offerings that encompass more than 500 stores, 50 restaurants, 21 cinemas, a bowling hall, Kids' Zone and Learning Centre, two anchor department stores, as well as a trendy food court, the largest supermarket in Asia and an outdoor square for large-scale events like Bangkok's official New Year countdown party, there certainly is something for everyone. The developer's 'Real Shopping' philosophy means that a lot of care has been taken to ensure a healthy balance between the brands 'we dream to buy' and a wide range of brands and products which one can readily afford to buy.

The 26 billion baht development, of which the first phase was launched in September 2006 with 70% of the project completed, is already drawing and 'wowing' the crowds with its slick, modernist architecture and spectacular designer components. The exterior features a state-of-the-art 400-metre long glass facade that, at a cost of 600 million baht, is also the longest of its kind in Thailand. Formerly known as World Trade Center, the newly branded CentralWorld, expected to by fully completed by the end of 2006, is still home to the very popular department stores Zen and Isetan. The mall's make-over, however, has not just involved some cosmetic changes to give it an image boost - instead, it has been fully redesigned and revamped, and is brand spanking new for all practical purposes. All that remains of the former glory days, of course, is its location slap-bang in the heart of the Chidlom 'battleground of the malls' with direct Skytrain (BTS) access, and the popular outdoor square area. The two famous shrines are still there too, mind you, just moved a little bit more to the right.
Open: 10:00 - 21:00
Location: Ratchaprasong intersection, Pathumwan
Skytrain: Chitlom or Siam
More Information about CentralWorld please visit to http://www.bangkok.com

MBK Center ::Trend In Bangkok

Situated in the most colorful shopping area of Bangkok, MBK Center is one of the top-list shopping malls which comes up as the first choice to many people’s mind.

While SiamCenter and Siam Discovery target teenagers and Siam Paragon is high-end shopping complex, MBK interestingly attracts any kinds of customers regardless sex, occupation or age.The building has been newly renovated, giving a feeling of hi-techy spacecraft to the customers. This shopping center consists of 7 floors and its shops are conveniently divided into certain zones.
Starting from the ground floor, the 2nd and 3rd floor, many youngsters are attracted to hundreds of clothing shops and boutiques, where you can easily get hot fashion update.
The next best thing is gold jewellery and accessories shops, offering quality products for gold and gem lovers, on the 2nd and 3rd floor.
Moreover, on the 3rd floor, health and beauty advocates, especially ladies, will be fascinated by spas, beauty salons and face-massage palors, offering pleasingly soothing experience.
The famous feature is mobile phone shops. The wat was restored under Rama I (1782-1809).

Wat Saket was used for cremation ceremonies, which were not permitted inside the walled city. During a plague in the reign of King Rama II (1809-24), 30,000 bodies were brought here.

The Golden Mount is an artificial hill constructed under King Rama III (1824-51). When the king tried to build a chedi here before the hill existed, it collapsed because of the soft soil beneath. He therefore made a strong pile of mud and bricks to support it.

It was Rama IV (1804-68) who crowned the new hill with the intended chedi. He also shored up the hill with 1,000 teak logs because it was already sinking into the swampy ground.

Rama V (1853-1910) added the chedi that stands today, enshrining within it a relic of the Buddha, said to be from India or Nepal, given to him by the British. The concrete walls were added during World War II to prevent the hill from eroding and the structure collapsing.

Waat aket To day

Wat Saket is not generally considered a notable temple in its own right, and most visitors come for the Golden Mount. However, it is interesting for its long history and its use as a cremation and burial site for so many people.

To the reach the top of the Golden Mount, you must ascend an exhausting 318 steps. On a clear day, the view from the top includes old Rattanakosin Island and the rooftops of Bangkok.

Just north of Wat Saket is where you can catch canal boats back to the town center, Siam or further up Sukhumvit.

Festival & Event

Every late October to mid-November (for 9 days around the full moon) Wat Sakhet hosts Bangkok's most important temple fair during the Loy Kratong festival. During this event, the Golden Mount is wrapped with red cloth and a carnival erupts around it, with food and trinket stalls, theatrical performances, freak shows, animal circuses, and other monkey business. The festival includes a candlelight procession up the Golden Mount.
source :http://www.sacred-destinations.com

Inside BangKok :: warm up before travel

Bangkok The capital city of Thailand is one of Asia's most cosmopolitan cities, known as "Krungthep" which means the City of Angels. Major tourism attractions include glittering Buddhist temples, palaces, timeless 'Venice of the East' canal and river scenes, classical dance extravaganzas, an almost legendary nightlife, and numerous air-conditioned shopping centers.
Beware of touts

Touts are a notorious lot in Bangkok, especially in places where many tourists go. They can be quite aggressive, especially if you are alone. You are precisely their kind of target. They will try to get you to go with them to bars, massage parlors, or to a gem shop.
In fairness, they are just out to make a living. They are not out to rob you, at least not overtly. What the average tourist usually does not know is that they get a commission from places where the touts will take you. That means that the price you will pay in those establishments will be grossly inflated. Don't fall for it.
If the tout is being overly aggressive, simply ignore him and walk away. If the persists, do not lose your patience. Simply continue to ignore him as if he does not even exist, no matter what he says or does. He will soon tire of trying and move onto his next potential victim.
They also know that if they persist too much, then you can easily find a tourist police officer They do not want that kind of trouble.
Ignoring them is the best way to deal with them.
Special thanks! for information from "What's on after dark" and "What's on this week"
