</p><p style="text-align: left;">The Winter Gardens is an entertainment complex that was first opened in 1878 and is now one of Blackpool’s most famous landmarks. Recently the Winter Gardens are in the process of a transformation costing one and a quarter million pounds and the newly transformed part is set to be open for the public February 2011. The Winter Gardens is not just famous in Blackpool, the Grade ll listed building is known across the UK for hosting political conferences and exhibitions and was once the setting for a Royal Variety Performance. The transformation of the Winter Gardens has been funded by Blackpool’s Council, the NWDA and ERDF.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">The transformation is a huge task that has to be undertaken in sections. The changes at the Winter Gardens so far have involved work on the Floral Hall, the Rotunda and the Church Street entrance and a great new revamp of the Café that has been closed for more than forty years. During the transformation some of the building’s original plaster work in what was the Floral Hall Bar was uncovered. The original mirrors have survived and the restored and repainted plaster is now part of the New Café that leads onto the Floral Hall, which is the centre of the complex.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">The interior of the café has used the work of the Winter Gardens original designer, Andrew Mezzei to produce a pleasing, funky space and great facility designed to encourage the crowds back to the Winter Gardens. As a tribute to the designer’s legacy and the wonderful, rediscovered plaster work, the café has been called Mezzei’s. The newly transformed section of the Winter Gardens opened on Saturday, February 12th 2011 just at the same time as Blackpool’s February Festival that features Shazam. The aim of the transformation is to ensure the long term use of the iconic Winter Gardens</p>

</p><p>The unveiling of a statue to Blackpool right back football legend Jimmy Armfield is planned for May 1st at a Gala dinner, forty years to the day after he played his last game for Blackpool FC. It was announced by Blackpool FC on October 30th 2009 that Blackpool Supporters Association commissioned a statue to be built to honour the player’s successful career as a player from 1854-1971 and then as manager from 1971-1978. The sculpture will be erected by internationally renowned sculptor Les Johnson. The estimated £100,000 cost of the statue will come from fund raising events and on April 24th of this year, Blackpool players aim to raise the final £25,000 needed to finish the statue by playing a marathon 24 hour match.</p>
<p>The life size Armfield statue was commissioned to honour what the Blackpool Gazetted have called, “One of the greatest players to ever grace Bloomfield Road”. The plan is for the statue, of Jimmy in one of his match poses, to be erected outside the West stand by the main entrance and is expected to be about nine feet in height. Between 1959 and 1966 Jimmy Armfield won 43 caps for England and between 1962 and 1964 was voted the best right back in Europe. Jimmy managed the ‘Seasiders’ from 1971 to 1978 when he took up a successful career in journalism and is well known nationally for his nigh on 30 years as match summariser for BBC Radio 5 Live. During his history as a player for the Seasiders Jimmy turned out for a record 627 matches and has since been honoured by the opening of the Jimmy Armfield South Stand at Bloomfield Road in May 2010 and in the 2010 New Years Honours’ List was awarded an OBE for services to the community.</p>

</p><p>Blackpool Pleasure Beach, situated along Blackpool’s south shore, is one of the most popular and visited UK amusement parks. The Thompson family own and manage the park and in 2003 opened a four star hotel there and the park then became part of a holiday resort. The park is next to the promenade and across from the South Pier. Current major attractions at Blackpool Pleasure Beach include three Wild Mouse roller coasters, a twin tracked roller coaster opened in 1935 and known as the Grand National, Im Bru Revolution, the first inverting roller coaster in Europe, the tallest roller coaster in the UK Pepsi Max Big One built by Arrow Dynamics and Valhalla, the most expensive dark ride in the world.</p>
<p>The gates of Blackpool Pleasure Beach were officially opened on 12th February 2011, the start of a number of special weekends that will run up to the 2nd and 3rd of April at a £10 discount on the normal price of a visitor’s wristband. The number of rides will be reduced on these weekends due to the construction of the expected Nickelodeon Land that the owners first announced in 2010.</p>
<p>Nickelodeon Land is a six acre site that will have a huge new restaurant, a Nickelodeon store and plenty of Nickelodeon characters. The new site will have lots of family attractions and a total of 14 new rides that will bear the Nickelodeon brand. New rides include the Rug rats Lost River a water ride where guests can enjoy a ride that takes them into a mystic jungle and ends with a splash finale. Avatar Airbender takes riders on spins through the air on a giant rotating disk, while Dora’s World Voyage, aimed at younger children, is an outdoor ride that takes them on a boat with Dora the Explorer through a French Harbour and a glittering Russian Palace among other things.</p>

</p><p>The Blackpool Armed Forces and Veterans’ week is a series of events at various locations across the city that is held to honour Blackpool’s men and women of the armed forces. Unlike the rest of the country where towns and cities may have a day set aside to honour men and women serving in the armed forces, Blackpool has set aside a complete weekend of events during that week. The Armed Forces and Veterans Week in the UK was started in 2006 as a way of recognising the services and sacrifices made by the men and women of the Armed Services.</p>
<p>The Blackpool Armed Forces and Veterans’ week is set to take place between the 18th and 26th June 2011, and plenty of fun is planned for all of the family. Some of the planned events for the week include a nineteen forties style tea room experience. Also in the pipeline for the Armed Forces and Veterans’ week is a flag raising ceremony and an afternoon tea dance as well as a ‘going to the flicks’ experience showing ‘Dad’s Army Marches On.</p>
<p>A lot of thought has been put into this year’s Blackpool Armed Forces and Veterans’ Week celebration and there is a good mix of fun things to do and more serious events to honour the troops such as  an illuminated tribute at Blackpool Cenotaph and Music for Heroes at Blackpool RAF station. The events include a special Veterans’ Gala Dinner and an Armed Forces Saturday night big band dance at Blackpool’s famous Tower Ballroom. Sunday morning is a little more serious with a Sunday service and then some relaxation in the Veteran’s Golf Challenge. The Blackpool Armed Forces and Veteran’s Week is brought to a close with a Veteran’s Parade.</p>

</p><p><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;"> </span></strong></p>
<p>The annual lights festival known as the Blackpool Illuminations was first switched on in the September of 1879, when they were spoken of as artificial sunshine. The illuminations run for 66 days from late August until the start of November and attract over three million visitors a year. Referred to as the ‘greatest free light show on earth’ in 2011 Blackpool Illuminations‘will run from 2nd September through to November the 6th.</p>
<p>The first night of the Illuminations is known as the Big Switch On and attracts thousands of visitors every season and nowadays the lights use only green electricity. The Blackpool Illuminations run for ten kilometres and contains practically every light display you could imagine including LED, fibre optics and flood lighting. The 2011 switch on will take place for the first time on the new Tower Headland in front of the famous Blackpool Tower and it is anticipated that the Switch on Concert will be by ticket only and hosted and broadcast by two radio stations.</p>
<p>Rumour has it that the concert will be a free ticket event but this has yet to be officially announced. Some of the other events that are planned to take place during the Switch On weekend include Illumathon – a midnight charity walk of the Illuminations by 1500 ladies and a Honda Goldwing Light Parade with hundreds of Honda Goldwings ridden in procession along the promenade. As in 2010 a giant screen will be erected between the South and Central Piers showing the concert and the switch on so that people on the St Chads headland will be able to see it. It is expected that 3 daleks and 3 tardis will be sited within the current Dr Who feature outside the Dr Who exhibition and the lighting effects should show the tardis travelling through time and space to reappear at the other end of the promenade.</p>

</p><p>When Blackpool were promoted at the end of the 2009/10 season, few could have predicted the great start to Premiership life that the Lancashire club have enjoyed this season. Many opposition clubs and supporters could have been forgiven for rubbing their hands with glee as their own date with the men in tangerine approached. Even many die hard Blackpool supporters will confess that they began the season with the attitude of enjoying it while it lasted.</p>
<p>By the middle of December however, Blackpool have consolidated a mid table position which no-one can argue isn`t fully deserved. There have been many memorable games since the start of the season, most notably the dramatic 2-1 win over Liverpool at Anfield, but for many it was the 1-0 victory at Stoke that underlined just how far Ian Holloway`s men had come.</p>
<p>Although Stoke themselves haven`t enjoyed the best of starts to the new campaign, The Britannia Stadium is still recognised by many as being one of the hardest places in the Premiership to get a result, a fact acknowledged by Holloway in his post-match comments. Stoke provide a heavy physical threat that intimidates some teams but Blackpool showed resilience and although Stoke`s Matthew Etherington hit the woodwork in the second half, the winning margin could have been bigger.</p>
<p>Blackpool truly deserve their mid-table position; they are playing some good football throughout the side and in DJ Campbell, who scored the winner against Stoke, they have one of the most potent strikers in the Premiership. With England strikers coming and going at the moment, many feel Campbell is unlucky to have fallen under Fabio Capello&#8217;s radar.</p>
<p>As the season approaches its half way point, what can Blackpool expect now from the rest of the campaign? Many who were predicting relegation in August are even suggesting the possibility of a European berth at the end of May.</p>
<p>Whereas the prospect of European football may not arrive just yet, it is realistic to suggest that Blackpool should go on from here to consolidate their current position and end with a top half finish. Critical to this achievement will be the form and fitness of Campbell but also the continued presence of manager Holloway. We will never know just how close their eccentric and charismatic leader came to walking away earlier this season but Blackpool fans must hope that he is there at the end of it. Holloway has been linked with vacant jobs at Newcastle at Blackburn too and a change of manager now could only be detrimental to the club`s ambitions.</p>
<p>Whatever happens, Blackpool&#8217;s long awaited return to the top flight has provided both their fans and every neutral with some wonderful memories of the season so far. Regular TV appearances have brought them into fans` homes and those who love their live football will want to see more of the same from the Tangerines.</p>
