Leeds United ‘are considering’ signing an experienced Premier League defender as a squad player for next season, according to journalist Alan Nixon.

Daniel Farke is planning to strengthen his squad substantially over the course of the summer transfer window as he looks to do what he could not when Norwich City boss, compete effectively in the top flight.

He will want to make sure his backline can withstand Premier League attackers and though Ethan Ampadu, Pascal Struijk and Joe Rodon are expected to be key, Farke wants more.

In Leeds’ thoughts is experienced defender Aaron Cresswell, who is set to leave West Ham United when his deal expires at the end of June.

He can play both as a left-back and a centre-back and Leeds are looking at him as an experienced squad option.

The 35-year-old also has interest from Championship new boys Wrexham, who could offer him an attractive deal to make the move to the Racecourse.

Cresswell has made over 300 appearances in the Premier League and Leeds could feel he would be a steady influence at the back.

He featured for West Ham in each of their final four Premier League matches and clocked the full 90 minutes in the 2-0 win at Manchester United.

Cresswell is from Liverpool and started his career at Tranmere Rovers, meaning a move to Leeds or Wrexham would take him closer to home.

Moving to Leeds would keep Cresswell in the Premier League, however he may be likely to get substantially more game time by joining Wrexham.

He has played in the Premier League for each of the last eleven seasons.

The defender will turn 36 years old before the end of the year.

Chelsea have stance which is softening concerning West Ham United target Carney Chukwuemeka, amid Borussia Dortmund opening talks for the player, according to talkSPORT.

Enzo Maresca is making decisions on a number of players in the ongoing transfer window as clubs show interest in several Chelsea stars.

Chukwuemeka has been linked with West Ham given Graham Potter’s admiration for him, but Dortmund are actively trying to do a deal.

Chelsea’s view has been that they will only look at a permanent sale for Chukwuemeka for fees which hit the £40m mark.

However, Chelsea’s ‘stance is softening’ and it appears that the Blues would now sanction a loan switch.

The midfielder has struggled to secure game time under Maresca this season and has had just four outings in the Europa Conference League and one in the EFL Cup.

Switching to the Bundesliga with Dortmund could be an attractive proposition for Chukwuemeka.

Whether the Ruhr giants having opened talks with Chelsea leads to West Ham firming up their interest in the 21-year-old remains to be seen.

The 25-year-old is a leader of the Lens side, but despite his status inside the dressing room, the French side are prepared to sell him.

Lens will not stand in Danso’s way if an offer of at least €25m is presented this summer.

Italian side Atalanta have already opened talks with Danso’s camp as they explore a possible move to take the defender to Serie A.

However, they could face Premier League competition as, according to French outlet Foot Mercato, Wolves and West Ham are in the mix.

Both clubs are carefully monitoring developments with Danso as they consider whether to move for him.

Negotiation on the asking price with Lens does not look possible though.

The French side consider Danso to be a key man and are only prepared to let him go if their €25m price is met.

Danso played in three of Austria’s four games at Euro 2024 this summer.

New Argentina coach Gerardo Martino has revealed that he wishes to remain in line with the work of his predecessor Alejandro Sabella.

The former Barcelona boss was handed the reins by the Argentinian Football Association (AFA) on Tuesday as he replaced Sabella, who left his post following La Albiceleste’s 1-0 World Cup final defeat to Germany last month.

Martino took charge of Barcelona last summer, but failed to make his mark at the Camp Nou as the Catalan giants won just the Spanish Super Cup in the 2013/14 campaign.

The 51-year-old, who left Barcelona after their final league game of the season, revealed that he wanted to stay away from coaching for a while, but then changed his decision once the AFA came calling.
 

Martino insisted that he is extremely proud to have been named the new coach of Argentina and explained that he intends to keep up Sabella’s good work.

"(It is hard) to express how proud I am to be in this position, that the AFA has entrusted such an important job to me", he was quoted as saying by FIFA’s official site.

"From now on, we have to work to keep the team at the standing they have achieved.

“It is an emotional commitment because it is a job desired by all, and it caused me to re-analyse things. Our goal is to remain in line with the work of Alejandro."

Martino’s first game in charge of the South American nation will be a friendly against world champions Germany in Dusseldorf on 3rd September.

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew believes that his team played "ok" in their 3-0 defeat away at Arsenal this evening.

The defeat was the Magpies' sixth successive Premier League loss and the Newcastle fans were quick to show their disapproval, showing banners calling for Pardew's dismissal and blaming the club's board for their current woes.

But Pardew does feel the club's players are working hard to turn matters on the pitch around.

He told Sky Sports: "It was tough for us tonight. We dug in, tried to offer a threat, but they were too good.

"In terms of the second half I thought we showed good character to come out there on the back of the defeats we've had. We played okay in the circumstances."

However, while Pardew accepts Newcastle's run is not good enough, he does feel expectations are too high at St. James' Park at present.

"We need to focus on finishing in the top ten and that's put pressure on us for Saturday. The players are working hard enough.

"It's a big club. They expect sometimes things we can't quite deliver.

"We're going to work hard this summer to make sure we get a team that the city can be proud of.

"I've got to make sure the recruitment and everything else is right over the summer. So I'm looking at the job as a long term opportunity for myself and that's how you have to approach it."

Newcastle currently sit ninth in the Premier League with 46 points from 36 games.

Czech midfield schemer Tomas Rosicky has insisted that he is set to remain at Arsenal next season, and quashed talk of a summer switch.

The 32-year-old made just ten appearances for the Gunners in the Premier League this season, as Arsene Wenger’s men finished fourth.

Rosicky’s contract at the Emirates Stadium expires next summer and there had been talk of an imminent exit.

He has denied that though.

"After the season I spoke with manager Arsene Wenger and the conclusion is that Arsenal want to keep me", he was quoted as saying by fotbal.idnes.cz.

"Of course, nothing can be ruled out, but I expect to stay."

However, beyond the 2013/14 campaign a return to his native Czech Republic has been floated.

Asked about a return to first club Sparta Prague, he said: "No, not yet. I have one year to go on my contract and I know nothing about not staying.

"Now the coach is counting on me."
