The company has announced that it will be expanding into the Netherlands later this year.

Netflix’s CEO Reed Hastings had already teased that the company would be expanding into a new country this year. Specific details on the time frame of the launch are not forthcoming at this time.

From Netflix:

“Upon launch, broadband Internet users in the Netherlands can subscribe to Netflix and instantly watch Hollywood, local and global TV series and films, including critically-acclaimed Netflix Original Series such as House of Cards and Arrested Development whenever and wherever they like on tablets, phones, TVs, game consoles and computers,”

Can Netflix afford to keep throwing down for original content and continue the fast pace of its global expansion?

The company has just signed the largest original content deal in its history with DreamWorks Animation.

The new agreement is a multi-year deal that will provide Netflix with more than 300 hours of original shows based on some of DreamWorks’ biggest hits, including Shrek, Madagascar, Kung Fu Panda and How to Train Your Dragon.

 

Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos was understandably excited about the announcement. Said Sarandos:

“This deal represents a major expansion of what’s already a phenomenal relationship, allowing us to bring beloved DreamWorks characters to the 40 countries where Netflix operates and setting the stage for us to innovate together as we expand into new markets,”

The company may have found its final suitor in DirecTV, if rumors are to be believed.

According to “sources close with the deal”, the nation’s number one satellite TV operator could close a deal to acquire Hulu before the end of the month. The transaction is rumored to be worth around $1 billion.

A potential issue for DirecTV would be the lack of guaranteed content rights from current Hulu owners Disney, News Corp. (Fox), and Comcast. On the upside, DirecTV’s first foray into the TV Everywhere ecosystem would be built on the back of a large and highly used service.

The sequel to the blood-n-bronze hit 300 picks up where that story left off, with the continued fight of the Greeks against their would-be Persian oppressors. Looks like we’re in for more of the same video game-ish visuals and highly stylized violence. Depending on your point of view, that could be ominous or awesome.

This change, which will support as many as six separate users, will allow family members to receive more personalized content recommendations.

Each user will have their own avatar and rental history, which will lead to more personalized recommendations than what is possible when multiple users share the same account.

Despite the fact that this new offering may encourage illegal password sharing, Netflix will still only allow two users on the same account to simultaneously stream content.

Will this new feature lead to more password sharing and potentially higher prices from Netflix to offset the issue? Or is password sharing not that big of a problem for Netflix (as CEO Reed Hastings has said), and the new feature is simply a convenient new option for subscribers?
