Subscriber counts weren’t the only thing that dropped for Netflix last quarter, as profit dropped by more than $100 million compared to the same quarter in 2018. Overall revenue was up to nearly $5 billion, but that climb couldn’t offset the expense of decreasing U.S. subscribers and increasing content costs.

To compound the bad news, Netflix has recently revealed that it is set to lose two of its most popular shows, Friends and The Office, to other streaming services in the coming months. The company claims, however, that competition was a major cause of its troubles last quarter.

Said Netflix:

“We don’t believe competition was a factor since there wasn’t a material change in the competitive landscape during Q2, and competitive intensity and our penetration is varied across regions . . . Rather, we think Q2’s content slate drove less growth in paid net adds than we anticipated.

Per eMarketer analyst Eric Haggstrom, there are about 150 million people in the US that currently watch Netflix, which comes out to about 2.5 people per account. Incorporating ads into its streaming service would get those commercials to a lot of eyeballs.

Says Brian Frons, former president of ABC Daytime and current UCLA lecturer:

“Netflix needs a way to grow its U.S. revenue in ways beyond just raising the subscription price . . . One wonders why they would not add an ad-supported model.

Netflix has announced that all of its shows rated TV-14/PG-13 or below will be free of depictions of smoking and e-cigarettes, unless there are “reasons of historical or factual accuracy.” Netflix also pledges that higher-rated projects will also limit use of smoking and e-cigarettes “unless it’s essential to the creative vision of the artist or because it’s character-defining (historically or culturally important).”

From a Netflix spokesperson:

“Netflix strongly supports artistic expression . . . We also recognize that smoking is harmful and when portrayed positively on screen can adversely influence young people.”

With characters like Hopper from Stranger Things constantly lighting up, is this shift going to be a difficult one for Netflix? Or will pressure from parents and industry groups make the streamer’s proclivity for showing cigarettes easily go up in smoke?
