Welcome 2008!

It’s been ages since my last post and up to now, I have no good things to write about. I don’t have a job, girlfriend, and of course, money. Did I just give you an idea of how loser I am? I hope not. Seriously, if 2007 started slow for me, 2008 started way too wrong. Things are just not working out right.

The only reason I see why I came back here is to test WordPress’ amazing WYSIWYG editor and see if I can implement, or at least, imitate it’s functionalities on a freelance project that I’m doing. Heck, even that project it’s not heading towards the direction that I want it to.

I’m so surprised that this blog, despite inactivity, has reached 10k hits. Thanks mainly to Google, the Search King, and other pretenders to the throne. I’m also shocked to see some of my “3 readers or so” still dropping by.

Questions: (honestly, I’m just testing the list function)

Is there a way to archive all my previous posts, so that readers can only see my recent posts (2008 and beyond) in the front page?
How can I log in to my MyBlogLog Account? I can’t have it work using my yahoo account.

It’s Summer’s Day.

No, there’s nothing wrong with the title of this post. While it is obviously getting hotter each day, I don’t intend to talk about the hottest season in history. The summer I’m referring to is actually our baby boy who is turning 2 today.

Yes, he is a dog. But we treated him as our baby. In fact, we went home to Laguna last weekend just to celebrate his birthday. We bought him a cake and a gift that we don’t think he’ll like: a shampoo. Taking a bath is one of his pet peeves. He hates it. And he is too smart to know his bathing schedule. Every time he feels that it’s his time to go to the bathroom, he would hide under the bed and would never come out. You need to lift the bed up just to get him. Ahh, the troubles of parenthood.

Sum, you’re 2 years old now. I just wish that you’d be brave enough to face the waters in your life. I also want you to know that I’m really considering getting you a mate, someone that you could spend the rest of your life with. If that could keep you from humping my legs, I’m more than willing to skip lunch to get you a partner. What do you think, doggie?

The Fourth

Tomorrow, March 3 2007 is a very special day. Shayne and me are celebrating our 4th Anniversary of being together. Considering the odds against us when we were just starting out, I think 4 years is quite an achievement. A lot of people didn’t expect that we will reach this far and we just proved them wrong. We are strong. We love each other. We are meant to be.

No, we are not perfect. Our relationship, just like any other normal relationships, has its own ups and downs. In fact, it’s been a rough and bumpy ride for the last few months. There are lots of fights, misunderstandings, and painful exchange of words. Conversations would usually turn into arguments and breakups. It’s a shame but we had a lot of breakups. There came a point that it happens every other night. It’s extremely sad and frustrating.

The weird thing about us is that after those breakups, we are still together. Those parting times and goodbyes would turn out to be an overnight incident. The next morning, things or so it seems, are back to normal. That’s always been the case, though there are times that she confessed that she was ready to give up, to move on, to forget…

But I always tell her that I’m not giving up. That I will do everything I could to keep our relationship alive. And so far it works. We had developed this resiliency that gives us ability to recover and move on. That resiliency is making us a stronger and a tougher duo to crack.

On our fourth year, we are fortified with love.

Moving on, I’m looking forward to a more harmonious life with her. We are on our fourth year and I certainly hope that this is not our last.

K-Lite and Little David

It’s been 3 months since 103.5 K-Lite aired it’s final broadcast but I’m still getting hits from various search engines. Search terms such as “klite 1035 fm,” “nitelite 103.5,” and “alternative station to klite 103.5” are still bringing hits to this post. It seems that the K-lite fans are still looking for answers on why K-lite died. Or maybe, they can’t still accept the fact that their favorite radio frequency is now Heart FM and playing ~~mushy~~ easy music all day long.

I decided to google those terms and it points me to different blogs ranting about K-lite’s fall and the rise of Heart FM. Reading the comments, you’ll get the drift that a lot of people are still upset while some of them are still hoping that the great old K-lite would come back. But all our (listeners) collective rants are nothing compared to the sadness by the guy who started the “right kind of lite” 12 years ago.

Last week, Adel Gabot aka Little David, found this blog and left a lengthy comment on one of my post:

Hi, insomnity.

I guess you should hear it from the horse’s mouth.

I feel bad more than anyone about K-Lite’s demise. Because I was the one who started it in 1995. I created the programming, the format back then; I made up, and named the talkshows. I hired the original jocks. I thought up and created all the musical programs, I produced most of the plugs, and voiced them too. I was the one who thought up “The Right Kind of Lite” slogan.

I co-hosted Twisted with Jess Zafra. I co-hosted Nitelite with The Blade and Monica. I did Talkback every now and then. And more.

After seven years being station manager, and general manager of the network, I quit.

Then he made a clarification that everyone of us, especially me who chose to believe that he was thrown out, should know:

I was not thrown out, as you chose to believe, Insomnity. In fact, hearing that sort of talk hurts me still, because it’s untrue, and unfair. People will never know what we went through that time. Which is what prompted me to write a comment here.

I left because of differences with the owners, partly personal, and partly work-related. I’ve never spoken of it in a public forum because it was a difficult, personal decision. But I couldn’t stay. If you really what to know the full, sordid story of what caused us to leave a place we loved, write me and I’ll tell you.

Then he fearlessly stated his opinions on why his radio station died:

And the people who took over botched it. They misread the listeners, they didn’t understand the market, they took out the good jocks, the talk shows, the good music. So the station died a slow lingering death.

It’s just a memory now. I loved my station, but that’s life.

I wrote him and ask him directly on why he left K-lite. His reply surprised me in many ways. First, I didn’t expect that he will tell me everything that transpired in 2002. Everything, as in everything! Second, his story is quite sad that it can easily pass up as a teleserye script. And lastly, because I cannot tell anyone about it. Sayang! He said clearly that if I tell anyone, He would hunt me down, shave my head and write bad things on it with a permanent marker. Even without that threat, I’m sure that I will not publish his email here.

But I’m putting some bits of it here to let his fans know that he, along with his wife, DJ Monica, and The Blade are happy now.

But at least Monica and I are happy. I like my job at the Inquirer, and I love doing PWiT. After almost 20 years in radio, I’ve managed to create a second career for myself, which I am so thankful to God for.

Sayang lang talaga si K-Lite. We both miss radio.

As for The Blade, he has made a career out of being an event host and emcee, a commercial voice talent, and an anime and teleserye dubber. And as of Feb.1, he is now the pinch-hitter DJ for Dream FM, I’m happy to say.

I’m also happy for the chance just to be able to do what we did, and I’d just like to stay with the happy memories than dwell on the sordid past. If anything, we were able to make a little difference in the radio scene during our time. And if there was something good to come out of it, I met my wife there.

Asia’s Big Switch

Asian countries have started switching from proprietary software such as Microsoft’s (Nasdaq: MSFT) to open source software, it was reported Tuesday at the eighth annual Asia Open Source Software Symposium (AOSSS) in Denpasar, Indonesia.

Experts and information technology practitioners from Bangladesh, China, India, Japan, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, and ASEAN member countries are attending the conference. (source)

What about the Philippines? Are we switching too?

Honestly, I’m not really sure if the Philippines sent delegates to that symposium. I tried looking for news related to that but I can’t find anything. I just hope that we are one of the ASEAN members that participated in the event.

You see, after being left out in One Laptop Per Child project, I’m afraid that we’re once again missing the benefits of cheaper technology. I don’t understand why the Philippines, being a third world country, is not taking the opportunity to save money by using FOSS. Imagine the funds we can keep by ditching Windows and switching to Linux. These can be used to other projects like school buildings, books, health care, and many more.

What about our Open Source bill? Is it still alive? In the first place, do we really need a law before we can use Open Source? DOST already developed a local Linux distro called Bayanihan, yet it’s not being used by our government agencies.

Yesterday, something really great happened. It’s not really unexpected but I find it hard to believe. It’s surreal, but I know it’s true: My girlfriend joined the blogwagon.

What makes it surreal? Well, let’s just say that blogging is not her cup of java. It’s not in her radar. Blogging, according to her is simply not for her. In fact, this blog of mine was put under her tight scrutiny. I almost stop this thing just to give her peace of mind. Luckily, I was able to convince her that there’s nothing wrong with blogging.

Last night, my sister asked me for some info regarding the death of a Korean actress. Apparently, somebody told her that Jeong-eun Kim (aka Vivian here in the Philippines), the star of Korean TV Drama Lovers in Paris was allegedly found dead in her boyfriend’s house. Doubtful and unbelieving because she’s a huge fan, she sent me text messages for confirmation.

Since I’m working for a Korean company, she is somehow expecting that I know the entire buzz that has been happening in Korea. Gawd. It’s really my fault, recalling how I sometimes ~~brag~~ tell that some of those Korean stars are our clients.

Anyway, to keep my sister’s sanity, I did some digging and found out that the suicide is not her favorite actress. Instead it was a young actress named Jeong Da-bin, the star of Attic Cat, which was shown here in the Philippines not so long ago. Her body was found hanging in the bathroom of her boyfriend’s house.

While my sister is relieved knowing that Vivian is still alive, a lot of people are still mourning over Da-bin’s death. People are also worried that the incident of suicide in Korea will rise. According to this article from Korea Herald, copycat suicides is threatening to rise:

Experts fear more copycat suicides for Korea which is already dealing with the highest suicide rate among the member nations of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.

Now that is sad. I wonder why people do it. I wonder why people even think of ending their lives. Depression? Sure, but is suicide really the answer? Will it bring you to a better place?

If plain suicide already boggles my mind, then copycat suicide is really beyond me. I mean, why? Do people find it cool to follow celebrities to death? This trend should stop! I hope the authorities are doing something serious about it.

If you are depressed and God forbid, considering suicide, please change your mind. Life is so beautiful. Try to get up and fix yourself. You’ll be thankful someday that you chose to live and fight it out.

There is hope.
