Kunstruimte 411 presenteert in Gebouw het Seinwezen in Haarlem een nieuwe expositie ´Surprise!´ gebaseerd op een ´Open Call´.

Hierop hebben veel kunstenaars gereageerd, zowel professionele kunstenaars die al eerder bij Kunstruimte 411 geëxposeerd hebben, als nieuwe contacten, het wordt dus voor eenieder een verrassing welke werken er uiteindelijk getoond gaan worden. Media zullen zijn: schilderijen, prints, fotografie, mixed media, tekeningen.

De opening is zondag 7 juni van 15.00-18.00 uur.

De expositie loopt tot 28 augustus, 2026.

Interview en performance in Amsterdam met Willy van der Griendt , 22 mei, 2026

In 2025 werd spontaan een nieuwe traditie in Arti in het leven geroepen! Op 11 april vond ‘De dateleedshow’ plaats. Willy van der Griendt, schrijver van het boek ‘Daten voor gevorderden’ werd geïnterviewd waarbij vele aspecten van het hectische datelandschap de revue passeerden. Na de pauze konden de aanwezigen zich oefenen in ‘kwaliteits-ontmoetingen’. Een langdurige speeddate ontstond en werd steeds onstuimiger, zodanig dat de Arti-voorzitter Jeroen Werner verzuchtte: ‘Dit is zo verrassend, dit zouden we veel vaker moeten doen!’

Op 22 mei willen we aan deze wens gehoor geven. In Dateleedshow 2.0 gaat Hans Kuiper met Willy van der Griendt in gesprek, waarbij we deze keer het interview naar een serieuzer niveau optillen. Het fenomeen daten verdient dat. ‘Leven tot je erbij neervalt, maar liever niet alleen. Of liever alleen, maar niet eenzaam. Hoe doe je dat?’

Nu we in het Westen steeds ouder worden (vrouwen gemiddeld 83,3 en mannen 80,7 jaar) willen we de vraag opwerpen of dit langere leven ons gelukkiger maakt of juist intense zorgen baart. Hoe sluiten oudere mensen vriendschappen en doen ze dat nog wel? Is er nog een plan of is oud worden iets wat je moet ondergaan? Zijn kunstenaars daarin anders en bevoorrecht omdat ze kunnen werken tot hun laatste adem en vaak in het harnas sterven? Of is ouder worden voor iedereen in deze individualistische maatschappij stomweg doodeng.Naast een diepgaand interview is er sprake van beeldmateriaal, een quiz en Q. en A. Na de pauze kan men weer aanvliegen op de lange tafels waar men ongegeneerd kan daten en versieren.

Hans Kuiper is kunstenaarslid van Arti et Amicitiae, maakt performatieve installaties en is initiator van Kunstruimte 411. Hij schrijft o.a. voor Articula en is oud-bestuurslid van Arti et Amicitiae. www.hanskuiper.com voor meer informatie over zijn projecten.

Willy van der Griendt (1950) is actrice, zanger en auteur. Ze speelde in een groot aantal toneelstukken, televisieseries en films en schrijft voor dagblad Trouw. Performance artist Hans Kuiper cooperated with VR specialist Sander Veenhof and designer Arjan van Amsterdam with the use of the Quest3 glasses, for a sound performance, using several parameters in a virtual 3D grid, connected to sound only. The performance shown here on video was a try out, for the actual, performance in the Amstelkerk in Amsterdam (april 2024), during the Salon Kuiperdomingos Projects, organized by Kunstruimte 411 (Art Space ´411´),. you can find at the 411 Instagram account.

Kunstenaar Sander Veenhof, Arjan van Amsterdam en ik zijn in 2024 bezig geweest met de voorbereiding van een performance in Amsterdam, bij de Lentesalon georganiseerd door Kunstruimte 411. Hier een eerste verkenning op video, het was voor mij toen ook de eerste keer dat ik met deze visuele sound app (zo noem ik het maar even) werkte, dus ook voor mij was het een experiment.

Op de instagram -account van Kunstruimte 411 staat een korte registratie van de uiteindelijke performance in de Amstelkerk in 2024.

Gerard Veldman will be showing works from his storage rooms, works that might need attention of old and new eyes.

Veldman on his work:

"I mention myself sometimes a part-time painter. But I am also a lecturer in Conceptual Development at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences. I have a strong “urge” to express myself creatively and to translate my ideas into striking images. The whole world and in particular the world of “visual culture” is my source of inspiration for my paintings. I am open to every stimulus and absorb it like a sponge.

I allow myself to be influenced by photos, films, art, music, architecture, comics, games and the media. It intrigues me to place recognizable figurative images in a different context with paint. As a result, my paintings have an alienating effect and raise questions. These questions are often about codes. We have agreed with each other what is “normal”. A painting that deviates from certain codes stands out. I do this not only so that it is seen, but also to play with ingrained expectations. I like to make people think and stimulate them to develop a different point of view. Because my conceived images sometimes have to be coarse in structure and then refined again, paint is the best material for me. I can often be found in my studio in the center of Haarlem, Netherlands."

Gerard Veldman toont werk dat zich heeft laten inspireren door de beeldtaal van de (post-)punktijd.

Veldman: “Ik noem mezelf soms wel eens parttime schilder. Maar ik ben ook docent Conceptuele Ontwikkeling aan de Hogeschool Amsterdam. Ik heb een sterke ‘drang’ om mezelf creatief uit te drukken en mijn ideeën te vertalen in pakkende beelden. De hele wereld, en in het bijzonder de wereld van de ‘visuele cultuur’, is mijn inspiratiebron voor mijn schilderijen. Ik sta open voor elke prikkel en neem die als een spons in me op.

Veldmaan laat zich beïnvloeden door foto’s, films, kunst, muziek, architectuur, strips, games en de media. Het intrigeert hem om herkenbare figuratieve beelden met verf in een andere context te plaatsen. Daardoor hebben zijn schilderijen een vervreemdend effect en roepen ze vragen op. Deze vragen gaan vaak over codes. De samenleving heeft met elkaar afgesproken wat ‘normaal’ is. Een schilderij dat van bepaalde codes afwijkt, valt op. Hij doet dit niet alleen om gezien te worden, maar ook om te spelen met ingesleten verwachtingen. Veldman wil mensen aan het denken zetten en hen stimuleren om een ander perspectief te ontwikkelen. Omdat zijn bedachte beelden soms een ruwe structuur moeten hebben en vervolgens weer verfijnd moeten worden, is verf het beste materiaal daarvoor.” Ik ben vaak te vinden in mijn atelier in het centrum van Haarlem, Nederland.”

Op de opening brengt Hans Kuiper, geinspireerd door het werk van gerard , enkele van zijn songs ten gehore uit de jaren ´80.

Met 'Mixtake' presenteert kunstenaarsduo JP&JP, bestaande uit Jean-Philippe Paumier en Jean-Philippe Rousset, zijn nieuwe opus bij Kunstruimte 411.

'Mixtake' verwijst naar de werkwijze van JP&JP als duo: speels, vrij, associatief. Speciaal voor deze gelegenheid, laten JP&JP nieuwe werken zien, van collages tot schilderijen.

Het project JP&JP is onstaan vanuit de behoefte aan een duidelijke visuele grammatica. Als duo, onderzoeken JP&JP onderliggende correspondenties in hun werk, terugkerende patronen en gezamenlijke bouwstenen.

Allebei beïnvloed door hun liefde voor electro muziek, kiezen JP&JP voor de mixtape als ideaal tentoonstellingsformaat: experimenteel, DIY en sketchy.

Seit 2005 titelten Zitate vergangener Dekaden (meist aus den 1980er Jahren) die jährlichen One Night Group Shows im Spor Klübü.

„Europa ohne Ende“

Die Düsseldorfer Band Kraftwerk veröffentlichte 1977 ihr legendäres Album „Trans Europa Express“ mit dem Song „Europa Endlos“ als Opener auf der A-Seite. 1980 erschien das Solo-Album „B-2 Unit“ des japanischen Musikers Ryuichi Sakamoto mit dem Song „The End Of Europe“. Als letzter Titel der B-Seite kennzeichnet der Song mit düsterer Stimmung das Ende der Platte. Beide Alben gelten als musikalisch stilprägend für mehrere elektronische Musikstile und wurden dahingehend intensiv rezipiert. Was sagen diese Meilensteine der Musikgeschichte abseits der Musik noch aus? Euphorie auf Europa versus Untergang von Europa?

Anhand der zitierten Songtitel thematisiert die jährliche One-Night-Group Show im Spor Klübü das facettenreiche Thema Europa mit seiner breiten Debattenkultur. Wird Europa weiter zusammen wachsen? Wird die EU, der europäische Staatenverbund, sich selbst vernichten oder wird er durch äußere Einflüsse zerstört? Gibt es jenseits von Europa und der EU Ideen für weitergehende Konzepte? Was bedeutet der europäische Gemeinschaftsgedanken für unsere Identität? Zurück zur Musik. 2016 als Reaktion auf das Brexit-Referendum veröffentlicht Kae Tempest auf ihrem Album "Let Them Eat Chaos" den Song "Europe Is Lost" mit den Textzeilen "Europe is lost, America lost, London lost - Still we are clamouring victory - All that is meaningless rules - We have learned nothing from history..."

Since 2005, quotes from past decades (mostly from the 1980 s) have headlined the annual One Night Group Shows at Spor Klübü.

"Europa ohne Ende" (Europe without end)

In 1977, the Düsseldorf band Kraftwerk released their legendary album “Trans Europa Express” with the song “Europa Endlos” (Europe Endless) as the opener on the A-side. In 1980, Japanese musician Ryuichi Sakamoto released his solo album “B-2 Unit” featuring the song “The End Of Europe.” As the last track on the B-side, the song marks the end of the record with its sombre mood. Both albums are considered musically influential for several electronic music styles and were received intensively in this regard. What do these milestones in music history say beyond the music itself? Euphoria about Europe versus the downfall of Europe?

Based on the song titles cited, the annual One-Night-Group Show at Spor Klübü addresses the multifaceted topic of Europe with its broad culture of debate. Will Europe continue to grow together? Will the EU, the European confederation of states, destroy itself or will it be destroyed by external influences? Are there ideas for more far-reaching concepts beyond Europe and the EU? What does the European community spirit mean for our identity? Back to the music. Art Space 411 presents Linda Weiss at the Platforms Project in Athens (Gr)

Kunstruimte411 is pleased to announce the participation in the independent art fair Platforms Project Athens with the installation ”Love as Resistance 3 ft. Neoschlager” by Berlin-based artist Linda Weiss. (“Love as Resistance 2” is still on display at Kunstruimte411 Haarlem (Amsterdam) until October 30th.)

“Love as Resistance 3” (Linda Weiss ft. Neoschlager)

Starting with transcripts of writings on love by the theorist bell hooks (”all about love”, ”salvation“, ”communion“), a conceptual mix and homage to the beginnings of hip hop has been created from images and text fragments. The follow up “Love as Resistance 3 ft. Neoschlager” is going to continue working on the discourse and its relationship to folk and gospel. Inspired by a research trip to Hydra and the famous love of Leonard Cohen and Marianne Ihlen, Linda Weiss tries to interweave scraps of poetry, extracts and photographs into a situation.

It is still a questioning and learning about what enables or prevents action in love. bell hooks considers the act of loving as an action and form of resistance. According to the artist La Roka aka Rokafella (Bronx New York), hip hop has given self-love back to the community and is, in her eyes, the continuation of the civil rights movement.

Neoschlager is a song style especially written for the art domain and sung at openings of exhibitions in project spaces, galleries and museums, mostly within a 3D performative installation. Neoschlager is a fascination for the pop persona, the ageing pop star and the transfer of ‘low art’ expressions into the ‘high art’ domain. De installatie "Love as Resistance" van de in Berlijn gevestigde kunstenares Linda Weiss zal te zien zijn in Kunstruimte 411 in Het Seinwezen in Haarlem.

Beginnend met een onderzoek naar geschriften over liefde door de theoreticus Bell Hooks ("all about love", "salvation", "communion"), start een conceptuele mix van en hommage aan het begin van hiphop met een botsende ontmoeting met een Afro-Amerikaanse Wall Street-professional (tijdens Occupy Wall Street), hetgeen leidt tot een reeks van werken door de Berlijnse kunstenares Linda Weiss. De tentoonstelling is samengesteld uit beelden en tekstfragmenten.

Dit is het begin van een reis en ontmoeting met het discours en de kracht ervan tot de transformatie door liefde en muziek. Het is ook vragen stellen en leren over wat actie in de liefde mogelijk maakt of verhindert.

Bell Hooks beschouwt de daad van liefhebben als een actie en een vorm van verzet. Volgens de kunstenares La Roka aka Rokafella (Bronx New York) heeft hiphop zelfliefde teruggegeven aan de gemeenschap en is het in haar ogen de voortzetting van de burgerrechtenbeweging. Dit project krijgt haar weerslag in een nieuwe tentoonstelling georganiseerd door Kunstruimte 411/ Hans Kuiper.

Linda Weiss is een in Berlijn gevestigde conceptuele kunstenaar wiens werk onder meer te zien was op Documenta 15. Ze heeft verschillende beurzen ontvangen en is een scholar in residence-geweest in o.m. het "International Studio and Curatorial Program NY", het "Multimedia Art Museum Moscow" en "Tare" (Noorwegen). Haar werken zijn vertegenwoordigd in tal van collecties zoals het MoMA NY, het Smithsonian Institution Washington, het Moscow Museum en het Museum Folkwang Essen.

The installation ”Love as Resistance” by Berlin-based artist Linda Weiss will be on display. Kunstenaar MC de Waal toont schilderijen en tekeningen in Kunstruimte 411. De tentoonstelling opende zondag 9 maart 2025 met een optreden van zangeres Martina Prins.

Over MC de Waal:

MC de Waal – ‘Lost’ Paintings 1991-2025

MC de Waal heeft altijd op het kruispunt van fotografie, performance, muziek, mode en de clubscene gewerkt.

De hier getoonde schilderijen zijn gemaakt in de periode dat De Waal toegang had tot de repetities van het Nederlands Dans Theater en een aantal balletten in ontstaansvorm van vooral choreograaf Hans van Manen heeft vast kunnen leggen in schetsen.

De bewegingen van de dansers Robert Dungey en Shaun Amyot waren leidend in het ontstaan van de schilderijen, die non-figuratief en expressionistisch te noemen zijn.

De symbiose met de door de choreografen gebruikte muziek is daarbij van groot belang.

Sopraan Martina Prins heeft een aantal van deze werken op haar repertoire staan en zal er een bij de vernissage ten gehore brengen.

Met een carrière die inmiddels meer dan dertig jaar behelst, is het voor MC de Waal tijd voor een overzicht in de vorm van een te verschijnen oeuvreboek.

Hierin zullen de verschillende fascinaties van de kunstenaar aan bod komen: veranderingen, de eeuwige transitie van mensen en beelden in beweging.

Belangrijk thema is het proberen vast te houden van de tijd en over de onmogelijkheid daarvan: tijdsbeeld versus tijdloos.

Schilderijen hebben vaak een langere eeuwigheidswaarde in de ogen van de mens, maar zijn zoals elk beeld onderhevig aan de smaak van de dag en de tijdsgeest.

De eerste pagina’s van het boek, vormgegeven door Gebr. Silvestri en onder redactie van Marinus de Ruiter, zullen te zien zijn op de expositie.

De publicatie zal bijdragen bevatten van vele collega-kunstenaars en schrijvers.

Bij de expositie is ook de mogelijkheid tot voorintekening op het boek.

Sopraan Martina Prins kan terugkijken op een rijk gevulde carrière als operazangeres in zowel binnen- als buitenland. Zij maakte deel uit van producties zoals de Hamlet van Opera2Day, het drijvende theater in een rijnaker Rheingold op de Rijn, ze zong de hoofdrol in Aïda op het Scheveningse strand en was één van de Walküres in de vermaarde Ring des Nibelungen van Pierre Audi voor De Nederlandse Opera. Ook met komische rollen als Ludmilla in Bruid te Koop van de Reisopera oogstte Martina veel succes.

Tegenwoordig studeert Martina naast haar zangcarrière aan de VU, waar ze zich het vak van erfgoedspecialist eigen maakt. De disciplines blijken zich als vanzelf aan te vullen en te verrijken.

Bij de performances van Maxime de Waal vloeien soortgelijke multidisciplinaire interesses van Martina en Maxime samen. Martina zal met één van de Vier letzte Lieder van Richard Strauss onderdeel uitmaken van de 'Lost Paintings' op zondag 9 maart 2025 in het Seinwezen.

Maja Jacobi in Kunstruimte 411

De eerste tentoonstelling van 2025 in Kunstruimte 411 wordt ´Linger´ waarin Maja Jacobi haar schilderijen toont in Haarlem.

Maja Jacobi (geb. 1992) is een Nederlandse kunstenaar gevestigd in Leiden met een achtergrond in beeldende vaktherapie. Geworteld in het abstract expressionisme, verkennen haar schilderijen overlappende thema's van menselijke emoties en zintuiglijke waarneming.

Haar, vaak grote, schilderijen vormen abstracte landschappen en nodigen de kijker uit om het dagelijkse leven te pauzeren en 'in' het schilderij te stappen. Maja vertaalt intuïtief (zintuigelijke) ervaringen in kleur en vorm. Gemaakt door het onvoorspelbare te omarmen en oog te hebben voor detail. In haar werken wisselen zachte gelaagde kleurwassingen, gedurfde penseelstreken en levendige kleuren elkaar af, waardoor beweging en drama ontstaat.

The first show in Art Space 411 in 2025 will be ´Linger´of painter Maja Jacobi.

Maja Jacobi (b.1992) is a Dutch artist based in Leiden with a background in art therapy. Rooted in abstract expressionism, her paintings explore overlapping themes of human emotions and sensory perception.

Her, often large, paintings form abstract landscapes or spaces and invite the viewer to pause daily life and ‘step into’ the painting. Maja intuitively translates tangible experience into colour and shape. Created by embracing the unpredictable and having an eye for detail. In her works soft layered washes, bold brushstrokes and vivid colours alternate, creating movement and drama.

Hommage aan Gijsbert Lameijer in Kunstruimte 411

Gijsbert Lameijer was een bekende kunstenaar in Haarlem, die onlangs overleed. 10 kunstenaars besloten een hommage te brengen aan de man en zijn werk die op 7 september 2024 om 16.00 uur geopend wordt in Kunstruimte 411 in gebouw het Seinwezen, Kinderhuissingel 1, 2013 AS, Haarlem.

Er zal ook een aparte zaal geopend worden, waar een selectie van zijn eigen werken te zien zijn. De tentoonstelling loopt tot eind oktober 2024.

Over de deelnemende kunstenaars

Gerard Veldman

Gerard, is oorspronkelijk art director/grafisch vormgever. Maar schildert nu. Hij Isoleert beeldelementen zoals tekst en foto’s, trekt ze uit hun context, veranderd de kleuren, compositie enz. En zet die ideeën om schilderijen. Hanteert diverse schilderstijlen en kiest stijlen die het beste passen bij het onderwerp. Soms grof van opzet en dan weer fijn en subtiel. Maar wat vooropstaat is dat zijn schilderijen impact moeten hebben, en ook fijn moeten zijn om naar te kijken, wel of niet met een knipoog.

Piet Zwaanswijk

Ik laat mij inspireren door uiteenlopende onderwerpen die ik doorgaans realistisch verbeeldt in verschillende uitingsvormen.

Ik noem mijzelf Quasi-Realist, een term bedacht door dichter/acteur/vriend wijlen Joep Kruijver.

Onderwerpen kunnen zijn; oorlog, poëzie, terreur, de kunsthistorie an sich, erotiek en kanker.

Jessica Assmann

Mijn huidige werk heeft als onderwerp het Brutalisme.
Het Brutalisme is een architectuurstroming waarvan Le Corbusier de grondlegger is.
Ik heb de laatste 4 jaar 18 schilderijen gemaakt met dit onderwerp als inspiratiebron.
Daarnaast maak ik ook 'vrij' werk van abstract tot figuratief.

Ron Felix

Ron Felix zijn werk volgt de vloeiende lijnen in de natuur terug te vinden zijn. Door het gebruik van diverse materialen naast smeedijzer zoals hout, glas, keramiek en koper ontstaan gewaagde combinaties waarbij het gevoel een hoofdrol speelt. Hij laat andere disciplines zijn ambacht en vormgeving beïnvloeden waardoor nieuwe vormen en composities ontstaan. Een zoektocht die tot nieuwe verrassingen leidt.

Liedeke Veninga

Liedeke Veninga heeft veel succes met haar metalen lintvormen die een vreemde harmonie met hun omgeving tot stand brengen. Van haar werk kun je zeggen dat het zeer aanwezig is maar toch ijl en raadselachtig, ‘krullen van de ziel’. Er is evenwicht, dat is de kracht van haar werk. Kijken en ervaren, dat is waar het om gaat.

Marjan Jaspers

Een ontdekkingsreiziger ben ik in mijn eigen vertrouwde omgeving.

Altijd vind ik iets wat aanzet om dingen te maken.

Gevoelens en gedachten over de wereld worden al werkend geprojecteerd.

I always find something that turns me on.

Jaennette de Bruin

Mijn werk is intiem, persoonlijk en vaak autobiografisch van karakter. Ik maak veelvuldig gebruik van elementen uit het dagelijks leven, mijn persoonlijke innerlijke en fysieke ervaringen, gedachten, fantasieën en emoties. Kwetsbaarheid en kracht zijn de uitgangselementen om een stukje intimiteit te tonen. Mijn eigen oordeel is hierbij het allerbelangrijkste. Ik wil oprecht blijven naar mijzelf.

Marjolein van Marle

Mijn naam is Marjolein van Marle. In mijn fotografie hou ik er van om te werken met licht, spiegeling, vergroting en kadering van al het moois waar mijn oog op valt.
Gijsbert Lameijer, mijn geliefde voor 15 jaar, en ik hebben veel gezamenlijke kunstprojecten gedaan tijdens onze reizen en in het atelier. Daar hebben we ongelofelijk veel plezier aan beleefd

Na hun laatste tentoonstellingsprojecten bij Sociëteit SEXYLAND, projectspace De Bouwput en PLAY room gallery, komen JP&JP terug met hun vijfde opus naar Kunstruimte 411.

Kunstenaarsduo JP&JP bestaat uit twee Franse kunstenaars: Jean-Philippe Paumier (1980, FR) en Jean-Philippe Rousset (1973, FR). Jean-Philippe Paumier is afgestudeerd aan de Kunstacademie van Rouen in 2003 (Master of Arts) en aan de Université Paris1 Panthéon-Sorbonne (Bachelor in Kunstgeschiedenis en Archeologie). Hij werkt sinds 2009 in Amsterdam als autonome kunstenaar. Hij maakt sculpturen, installaties en assemblages volgens het principe van het objet trouvé en refereert daarmee naar Duchamp. Hij exposeert regelmatig bij verschillende projectspaces, musea en galeries in Nederland en in het buitenland (o.a. VS, Tsjechië, Duitsland en Korea).

Jean-Philippe Rousset is in 2000 afgestudeerd aan de Kunstacademie van Clermont-Ferrand (Master of Arts). Hij is voornamelijk werkzaam als schilder, maar experimenteert ook graag met ruimtelijke installaties, sculpturen en elektronische muziek.

Naast hun solocarrières werken JP&JP sinds 2018 samen als kunstenaarsduo voor specifieke tentoonstellingsprojecten. Kunstenaarsduo JP&JP ontwikkelt het liefste site-specific projecten waarbij ze op de ruimte zelf reageren. De sfeer en de uitstraling van de ruimte geeft hen een bepaalde richting waar ze naartoe werken. Hun gezamenlijke werkwijze is dan vrij intuïtief en speels. Ze onderzoeken de geheime verbanden, onderlinge verwijzingen en botsingen in hun werken. Zo streven ze naar een DIY chic & cheap esthetica. Hun werk ontstaat vanuit de behoefte aan een duidelijke visuele grammatica, met een licht humoristische ondertoon.

JP&JP maken in hun werk allebei gebruik van simpele bouwmaterialen en voorwerpen die ze met elkaar combineren. In het maakproces passen ze krachtig eenvoudige formules toe. Zo articuleren ze in een duo-project hun beide invloeden van Surrealisme tot Pop Art en Minimalisme, op een organische en niet-dogmatische manier.

In samenwerking met Kunstruimte 411 willen JP&JP graag een nieuw project ontwikkelen met als titel FLUO FLASH FUN. Speciaal voor dit project zijn ze van plan om nieuwe driedimensionale werken te creëren -halverwege tussen installatie en schilderkunst in - in de vorm van een meerdelige installatie. De installatie zal bestaan uit modulaire elementen die gemakkelijk in de ruimte geïnstalleerd (en afgebroken) kunnen worden, met gerecyclede - en bouwmaterialen. Hoe de elementen precies in elkaar worden gezet en ze zich door de ruimte gaan ontplooien, wordt ter plekke bepaald.

FLUO FLASH FUN is een knipoog verwijzing naar de tijdgeest van de jaren ‘80, waarin JP&JP opgroeiden. In FLUO FLASH FUN gaan JP&JP terug naar de oerervaring van de jaren ’80 en onderzoeken ze hoe diep hun beeldtaal formeel gestructureerd wordt door hun vroege visuele omgeving: kunst, mode en reclamewereld, boardsporten, et cetera. Ze streven ernaar hun eigen vocabulaire te verruimen en vernieuwen, door terugkerende patronen, elementen uit vintage logo’s, herkenbare vormen en kleurpaletten in hun huidige werk te incorporeren. FLUO FLASH FUN klinkt als een gescandeerd motto en bepaalt de maat waarin JP&JP samenwerken. FLUO FLASH FUN is eerder een experimentele zoektocht dan een nostalgische terugreis.

After their last exhibition projects at Sociëteit SEXYLAND, projectspace De Bouwput and PLAY room gallery, JP&JP are back with their fifth opus. The artist duo JP&JP consists of two French artists: Jean-Philippe Paumier (1980, FR) and Jean-Philippe Rousset (1973, FR). Jean-Philippe Paumier graduated from the Rouen Academy of Arts in 2003 (Master of Arts) and from the Université Paris1 Panthéon-Sorbonne (Bachelor in Art History and Archaeology). He has been working in Amsterdam as an autonomous artist since 2009.

He makes sculptures, installations and assemblages according to the principle of the objet trouvé, referring to Duchamp. He regularly exhibits at various project spaces, museums and galleries in the Netherlands and abroad (including the US, the Czech Republic, Germany and Korea). Jean-Philippe Rousset graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Clermont-Ferrand in 2000. He mainly works as a painter, but also likes to experiment with spatial installations, sculptures and electronic music.

In addition to their solo careers, JP&JP have been working together as an artist duo since 2018 for specific exhibition projects. Artist duo JP&JP prefers to develop site-specific projects in which they respond to the space itself. The atmosphere and appearance of the space gives them a certain direction that they are working towards. Their joint working method is quite intuitive and playful. They explore the secret connections, cross-references and clashes in their works. In this way, they strive for a DIY chic and cheap aesthetic. Their work arises from the need for a clear visual grammar, with a slightly humorous undertone.

JP & JP both use simple building materials and objects in their work that they combine with each other. In the creative process, they powerfully apply simple formulas. In a duo project, they articulate both their influences, from Surrealism to Pop Art and Minimalism, in an organic and non-dogmatic way.

In collaboration with Kunstruimte 411, JP&JP would like to develop a new project entitled FLUO FLASH FUN. Especially for this project, they plan to create new three-dimensional works – halfway between installation and painting – in the form of a multi-part installation. The installation will consist of modular elements that can be easily installed (and dismantled) in the space, using recycled and building materials. Exactly how the elements will be put together and how they will unfold through the space is determined on the spot.

FLUO FLASH FUN is a nod to the zeitgeist of the 80s, in which JP&JP grew up. In FLUO FLASH FUN, JP&JP GO BACK TO THE PRIMAL EXPERIENCE OF THE 80S AND EXPLORE HOW DEEPLY THEIR VISUAL LANGUAGE IS FORMALLY STRUCTURED BY THEIR EARLY VISUAL ENVIRONMENT: ART, FASHION AND ADVERTISING, BOARD SPORTS, ET CETERA. They strive to broaden and renew their own vocabulary, incorporating recurring patterns, elements from vintage logos, recognizable shapes, and color palettes into their current work. FLUO FLASH FUN sounds like a chanted motto and determines the measure in which JP&JP work together. FLUO FLASH FUN is more of an experimental quest than a nostalgic return trip.

In 'De Lentesalon (Spring Salon) Kuiperdomingos Projects' a selection of work by artists from Berlin and Amsterdam and surroundings will be presented to the Amsterdam public.

Hans Kuiper and Tiny Domingos started their collaboration in 2011 in Berlin. They founded an artists' initiative and organized several exhibitions as part of 'Colony Wedding', (one of the oldest associations of artist-run spaces in Germany), including the famous Kuiperdomingos Projects Salon with 52 participants. \

In April 2024, another salon will be organized, this time in Amsterdam, with artists from Berlin and Amsterdam. The aim of the exhibition is to honour artists who, outside the museum and gallery circuit, create independent spaces and initiatives to present practices with the visual arts as a starting point. For the curators of this project, these spaces are sanctuaries of cultural participation and inclusion, beyond institutional, commercial and political interests, essential for new perspectives.
