Crystal Wagner Creates Exotic Landscapes From Everyday Items

Artist Crystal Wagner’s intricately layered installations are truly a feast for the eyes. Her mixed-media artwork features easy-to-come-by paper and plastic materials such as streamers, plastic tablecloths, and chicken wire that seem to take on a life of its own as shapes emerge, multiply, and eventually take over the gallery space. Her most recent installation“Urban Kudzo” was on view at the Zuckerman Museum of Art (May 8-June 7, 2013).

Crystal Wagner (b. 1982), represented by Spoke Art Gallery, is currently residing as an Assistant Professor of Art at Georgia College.

Mary Leu’s Ultra Detailed Wood Sculptures

The appearance of wrinkly laundry hanging on a clothesline leaves the distinct impression of soft fabrics. But these are, in fact, stunningly detailed wood creations by Taiwanese sculptor Mary Leu (呂美麗).

Leu painstakingly carves and chisels every wrinkle and fabric texture in a single block of wood to create incredibly realistic everyday object. Even without staining or painting, the sculptures can easily be mistaken for the real thing. The level of craftsmanship and minuscule detail involved is breathtaking upon closer inspection,

Wave Dilfert by The Principals

Wave Dilfert is created by Brooklyn-based design studio The Principals for The Feast (October 5 – October 6, 2012) at the Essex Market in New York City. This sensor-embedded robotic space moves in response to changes in light conditions of its surrounding environment. Inspired by Ushahidi, this installation serves as the latest addition to The Principals' series of interactive research project that "pulls information from its surroundings to de-mystify the complexities of space."

The 21st Century Light Space Modulator

Created by Jason Bruges Studio and commissioned by India's largest lighting and electrical manufacturer Havells-Sylvania , the 21st Century Light Space Modulator is an interactive light installation recently unveiled under Hungerford Bridge, on London's South Bank. Inspired by László Moholy-Nagy’s work, Light Prop for an Electric Stage, this glittering sculpture responds instinctively to movements of passers-by, making human interaction the key and the most intriguing component in this work.

The Modulator is on display under Hungerford Bridge at Southbank Centre October 18 – November 1, 2012. It will be exhibited at the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) from November 14, 2012 onward.

Tree Lungs by Loop.pH

Commissioned by the French cultural arts organization Lille300, London-based design studio Loop.pH created EnergyFutures, a series of installations in the park and design science workshops, for the Fantastic 2012 arts festival. "Tree Lungs" is a tree-top light installation that inspires the inhabitants of Lille to re-imagine and redefine their future parks as local energy orchards, augmenting trees into power plants to convert daylight into electricity.

The festival runs from October 6, 2012 – January 13, 2013.

Lamp Shades Made From Disposable Cups

Talented newly graduated German designer Meike Harde did something extraordinary with disposable cups. She creates her entire "Lichtschlucker" collection from plastic cups, giving disposable product a much longer life span as a decorative lamp shade. There are many different styles of lamp shades to choose from. Each style is made from different arrangement of cups.
