Bear Tracks

One day last week while I was driving my son home from the school bus, I noticed bear tracks in the lightly fallen snow at the side of the road. I said, 'Wow! Everyone says we have a bear in our community, but I've never seen him. This is the first time I've even seen bear tracks."

Naturally as soon as we got out of the car, my son had to go and see the bear tracks for himself. I followed along behind him. We noticed how the bear tracks meandered along the edge of the road for a while. Then all of a sudden, the tracks went back and forth and in circles, all over one another. The bear tracks filled a circular area about 6' in diameter in the middle of the road. We wondered why the bear did this? Was he chasing a squirrel for an afternoon snack? We so often see squirrels prancing about in that very area. Then like nothing had ever happened, the bear tracks took a straight and narrow path into the wood beside my home.

After our fun discovery, when I was nestled warm inside my home, I couldn't help but think how those bear tracks resembled my experience of the previous few days. I had a small problem. The first day my mind meandered back and forth on which way to handle my problem. The second day I got very tense and confused, going back and forth in my head with my two options. The third day I took my problem to the Lord in prayer. It wasn't long before the right answered seemed so clear to me. I followed the Lord's lead and took the straight and narrow path to peace.

It's so simple...

Did you know January was National Thank You Month? We should say thank you to someone whenever the situation arises. But sometimes someone is so special all the time, they deserve a special thank you.

I'm sure you have a friend who is always there to support you during every crisis, a nurse who spends shows she really cares by spending a little extra time talking to you, a mother who babysits your children for nothing, the list goes on and on.

Memories for Weddings

We all look forward to weddings. Our wedding, our sibling's weddings, our children's weddings, our friend's weddings, and our extended family weddings. Weddings are times filled with joy, love, and hope for the future. We plan the ceremony, the reception, the honeymoon, where we will live together when we are a married couple. Most importantly we plan how Christ and God our Father will be the center of our lives together. The binding tie that teaches us how to love, how to understand, how to forgive, how to keep our commitment alive until death do we part.

Sometimes a small shadow of sorrow is a part of our wedding. My mom died when I was 12. It was very painful for me knowing that she would not be there to be the last one to walk down the isle before my dad escorted me down it. I believe our loved one is with us, in the memories we hold dear in our heart. Even so, we may wish to honor the memory of our loved one in heaven on our wedding day.

Even though someone we love has gone on to heaven, the love we shared with them stays in our heart forever. I know. My mom died when I was 12. Now I'm 56. I love her no less. The pain subsides, but the memories live on.

Did you know that Mesothelioma is a preventable cancer? We need to rid homes, schools and commercial buildings of asbestos to save lives. It's scary to realize that the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) estimates that there are asbestos containing materials in approximately 107,000 primary and secondary schools and 733,000 public and commercial businesses. I'm talking about the health of our kids. Our kids futures.

So what is asbestos? It's a naturally occurring mineral. But in this case, natural doesn't mean safe. Oil is natural to the earth as well but, you wouldn't give your child a glass of oil for breakfast. So why are 30 million pounds of asbestos still being used today?

On July 12, 1989, the EPA filed a rule banning most asbestos-containing products. In 1991, the regulation was overturned. What's wrong with that picture? This year 10,000 Americans will die of asbestos-related disease and 200,000 will still be living with asbestos.

Mesothelioma lays dormant in the body for 20-50 years. It is an aggressive cancer that attacks the lining of the body, most cases within the lungs. Up to 3 thousand new cases are reported each year. One day it could be your adult child that is diagnosed with Mesothelioma and given only 10 months to live.

You can get involved in with EPA regulations of asbestos at EPA.gov. Also, the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation (MARF) offers several opportunities for us to help the fight against this disease. So visit the MARF and give what you can in the form you feel most comfortable with.

Make the world a better place through acts of kindness that show care and support on Be An Angel Day. Every member of your family can reach out to help someone in need. Select a neighbor, friend, or family member who needs help and do a good deed.

There's all kinds of acts of kindness and good deeds suitable to Be An Angel Day. Sometimes it's physical work, and sometimes it's caring attention. Here are some ideas for yourwhole family.

1. If an elderly neighbor lives alone, bake a plate of cookies and make a pitcher of lemonade. Take it over and share your goodies, but most important spend some quality time with them. Sit and talk, but mostly listen. The elderly have so many life experiences to share. There is history and wisdom behind the wrinkles. You and your children will enjoy this and maybe learn a thing or two.

2. Make up I.O.U cards. On the back of each card put:

1 Household Chore.

No Expiration Date!

Pass the cards out to friends and family with a temporary or permanent disability. Maybe a friend broke his leg and would appreciate the lawn being mowed. Maybe a family member is in a wheelchair and would appreciate you cleaning out the kitchen cabinets.

3. If you know of someone who is having a hard time feeding their family, make up a gift basket of fruit and treats that they normally could not afford and leave it on their doorstep with a From Your Guardian Angel card.

4. Go around to your neighbors and collect clothes that are no longer needed and bring them to a homeless shelter or soup kitchen. Then spend some time distributing the clothing to the needy.

5. Write an anonymous letter of appreciation to someone who deserves it...
To a parent who spends night and day carrying for a child with a disibility.
To a son or daughter who cares for an elderly parent.
To a friend or neighbor who volunteers time to a local charity.
To your church youth group leader.

6. Never miss a random act of kindness...

If you are in a store and someone is short a dollar or less, give them what they need.
If you see someone with a flat tire, stop and help them change it.
If you see a child(ren) picking on another child, step in and put a stop to it. Make sure the child gets where they need to go safely.
If you see someone overloaded with packages, offer to carry a couple.

Remember that Be An Angel Day is about acts of kindness, not recognition.

Even though we know our Christian loved ones go on to eternal life with the Lord after death, we miss their earthly presence. We feel lonely without them. We miss their loving touch, kind words, joyous laughter, and inner strength. They lived in faith, and they walked in faith with us. We have so many memories. But it is our faith that gives us the inner strength to feel joy for the time shared together, joy for their eternal life, and eventually joy in going on without them.
