I cam across a nice article and loved to share it with you..

Employee "A" in a company walked up to his manager and asked what my job is for the day? The manager took "A" to the bank of a river and asked him to cross the river and reach the other side of the bank. "A" completed this task successfully and reported back to the manager about the completion of the task assigned. The manager smiled and said "GOOD JOB"

Next day Employee "B" reported to the same manager and asked him the job for the day. The manager assigned the same task as above to this person also. The Employee "B' before starting the task saw Employee "C" struggling in the river to reach the other side of the bank. He realized "C" has the same task. Now "B" not only crossed the river but also helped "C" to cross the river. "B" reported back to the manager and the manager smiled and said "VERY GOOD JOB"

The following day Employee "Q" reported to the same manager and asked him the job for the day. The manager assigned the same task again. Employee "Q" before starting the work did some home work and realized "A", "B" & "C" all has done this task before. He met them and understood how they performed. He realized that there is a need for a guide and training for doing this task. He sat first and wrote down the procedure for crossing the river, he documented the common mistakes people made, and tricks to do the task efficiently and effortlessly. Using the methodology he had written down he crossed the river and reported back to the manager along with documented procedure and training material. The manger said "Q" you have done an "EXCELLENT JOB".

The following day Employee "O' reported to the manager and asked him the job for the day. The manager assigned the same task again. "O" studied the procedure written down by "Q" and sat and thought about the whole task. He realized company is spending lot of money in getting this task completed. He decided not to cross the river, but sat and designed and implemented a bridge across the river and went back to his manager and said, "You no longer need to assign this task to any one". The manager smiled and said "Outstanding job 'O'. I am very proud of you."

What is the difference between A, B, Q & O? Many a times in life we get tasks to be done at home, at office, at play.,
Most of us end up doing what is expected out of us. Do we feel happy? Most probably yes. We would be often disappointed when the recognition is not meeting our expectation. Let us compare ourselves with "B". Helping someone else the problem often improves our own skills. There is an old proverb (I do not know the author) "learn to teach and teach to learn". From a company point of view "B" has demonstrated much better skills than "A" since one more task for the company is completed.

"Q" created knowledge base for the team. More often than not, we do the task assigned to us without checking history. Learning from other's mistake is the best way to improve efficiency. This knowledge creation for the team is of immense help. Re-usability reduces cost there by increases productivity of the team. "Q" demonstrated good "team-player" skills,

Now to the outstanding person, "O" made the task irrelevant; he created a Permanent Asset to the team.
If you notice B, Q and O all have demonstrated "team performance" over and above individual performance; they have also demonstrated a very invaluable characteristic known as "INITIATIVE".

Initiative pays of everywhere whether at work or at personal life. If you have initiative you will succeed. Initiative is a continual process and it never ends. This is because this year's achievement is next year's task. You cannot use the same success story every year. The story provides an instance of performance, where as measurement needs to be spread across at least 6-12 months. Consequently performance should be consistent and evenly spread. Out-of-Box thinkers are always premium and that is what everyone constantly looks out for. Initiative, Out-of-Box thinking and commitment are the stepping stone to success.

Initiative should be lifelong. Think of out of the box…..Happy Working

Tips to optimize MySQL for better performance

I ave been working on my project www.edugoog.com and try to optimise queries. To do so I came through many articles. I gathered basic points from the same. Please find my finding below and feel free to add more in comments if missed.

Don’t query columns you don’t need, avoid using SELECT * FROM
Use caching to reduce database load
Normalize tables to ensure data consistency
Use persistent connections
Proper use of indexes improve performance
Do not perform calculations on an index (eg: if you have an index for a column called salary, do not perform calculation such as salary * 2 > 10000)
“LOAD DATA INFILE” is the fastest way to insert data into MySQL database (20 times faster than normal inserts)
Use INSERT LOW PRIORITY or INSERT DELAYED if you want to delay inserts from happening until the table is free
Use TRUNCATE TABLE rather than DELETE FROM if you are deleting an entire table (DELETE FROM delete row by row, whereas TRUNCATE TABLE deletes all at once)
Always use EXPLAIN to examine if your select query is inefficient
Use OPTIMIZE TABLE to reclaim unused space (Note: Table will be locked during optimisation, so only do it during low traffic time)
Better to have 10 quick queries than 1 slow one
MySQL can search on prefix of indexes (ie: If you have index INDEX (a,b), you don’t need an index on (a))
Don’t use HAVING when you can use WHERE
Use numeric values (rather than alphabetical values) when performing a join

Integrate and customize fckeditor with symfony

Till date, I always preferred tinymce rich text editor with symfony. But noticing that it does not provide inbuilt functionality for file uploading with browse.

After getting my hands burns on with plug-ins, I than moved to remove the tinymce and go with FCKEditor. Believe me it was worth opting for the later. Though it was not an easy task to get it work with symfony 1.4 but neither it was too hard if followed the basic steps.

Below are steps which provide me with perfect integration of fckEditor.

I am assuming, you already have fckeditor symfony plug-in and fckeditor js lib in your source code.

1: Copy and paste fckeditor_php5.php
         copy from projectName/web/js/fckeditor/fckeditor_php5.php TO projectName/lib/fckeditor_php5.php
2. save fckconfig.js as customconfig.js
           copy from projectName/web/js/fckeditor/fckconfig.js TO projectName/web/js/fckeditor/customconfig.js

Basically, you would have to make all your changes to customconfig.js and no change to fckconfig.js
Though it seems typical, I tried changing directly fckconfig.js but to no avail. It did not had any changes affected. :(

In customconfig.js
1. to change the skin theme, FCKConfig.SkinPath = FCKConfig.BasePath + 'skins/silver/' ;
// there are 3 skins available. Default, silver and office2003
2. To provide only required ToolbarSets, change appropriate changes to FCKConfig.ToolbarSets["Default"]
Mine is as below:

Now the final change:

Since we have change the config file from fckconfig.js to customconfig.js, we need to load the same js.
To change so, open fckeditor.html at     /js/fckeditor/editor/fckeditor.html
Change LoadScript( '../fckconfig.js' ) to LoadScript( '../customconfig.js' ) ;

For Symfony changes
Get the sfFCKEditorPlugin from here
install the plugin
Enable plugin from your config/ProjectConfiguration.class.php
$this->enablePlugins('sfFCKEditorPlugin');

Make the change in settings.yml in your modules directroy
all:

    rich_text_fck_js_dir: js/fckeditor

In the form.class, do the following for widget you need fckeditor:

How to set batch / cron jobs in symfony.

I cam across an instance, where i needed to set up the batch job for certain API which were getting information from 3rd party vendors on certain time intervals.
So I started to look for doing same with symfony 1.4 and doctrine.
Below are some of my findings and better ways to create the batch / cron jobs.

I will walk you through the steps in order to get it working properly.

Batch Instead of Web

Symfony has already set up to make it easy to create small controllers that will be run from the command line.

The “/batch” directory is where you will be putting your special controller file, instead of the “/web” directory. This batch file is looks pretty much like the front controllers that go in the “web” directory. The only thing you will be leaving out is the dispatch method which starts running the controller and action. We are going to be replacing it with a line that still fires up the sfContext instance so that we have access to our database, etc.

Batch File:

it’s similar to a standard front controller file. Now all you require is add code / function your cron job requires do.

Run through command prompt:

go to your PROJECT_DEIRECTORY
php batch/cron_example.php
running cron job…

If you get the expected output, then everything is good to go.

The Crontab File

set up the cron to run every minute and output to null.

I can across a issue, where i needed to access json response by ajax request.
json response was in array and needed to iterate through each of the records to display it in HTML.

for json response through php I did following

How to delete .svn folder recursively on Linux or mac?

I came across a situatin where i needed to copy all the files ( svn commited ) from one project to another. but did not wanted to have .svn into new project, so looked for to delete all the .svn folder/files from new project set up.
I found the way to delete all .svn folder from my project folder in Linux.
To delete all .svn folder in Linux just follow the steps below:-

Start Terminal
change your current directory to your project folder (ex: /var/www/html/PROJECTNAME)
type [ check if the file list is proper to be sure :) ]
find ./ -name ".svn"
type
find ./ -name ".svn" | xargs rm -Rf
and enter.
Done, all your .svn folder has been deleted.

MySql - Manage users and user roles

I cam across to create a new user with restricted access for the database. Just to allow user to view, update and delete.
The below is just a brief step to do the task. To learn and understand , it would be better to look at mysql online manual

Step 1: Go to command propmt, and login to mysql

[root@sun ~]# mysql -u root
Welcome to the MySQL monitor. Commands end with ; or \g.
Your MySQL connection id is 3384
Server version: 5.0.77 Source distribution
Type 'help;' or '\h' for help. Type '\c' to clear the buffer.
mysql>
* make sure username has the rights to create and grant access to new users :)

mysql> GRANT SELECT,INSERT,UPDATE,DELETE on {TABLENAME}.* to '{USERNAME}'@'{DOMAINNAME}';
Query OK, 0 rows affected (0.04 sec)

The above user is created with password as null.

the other alternative is to create a user first,

CREATE USER '{USERNAME}'@'{DOMAINNAME}' IDENTIFIED BY

'{PASSWORD}';

and than

GRANT SELECT,INSERT,UPDATE,DELETE on {TABLENAME}.* to

'{USERNAME}'@'{DOMAINNAME}';

calculate long ip from Ip address - IP number from IP address - ip2number

Today, i came across to compare IP addresses and needed to have it stored in the long int as well. its also called IP number

Reason for storing values in long int is that it would help to get the ip details like contry and location within its range.

Any IP address is divided into 4 parts. generally each parts has different weightage.

To calculate IP number for any IP address:

IP Number = 16777216 * A + 65536 * B + 256 * C + D

This way we can also get range of IP address.

so if we have IP address say 74.125.236.80 than

IP Number = 16777216 * 74 + 65536 * 125 + 256 * 236 + 80 = 132406480

I have made a function to calcualte above IP number in PHP, hope its helpful

       1 .. First prepare a document when to milk them (Project kick off)
       2 .. Prepare a document how long you have to milk them (Project plan)
       3 .. Then prepare how to milk them (Design)
       4 .. Then prepare what other accessories are needed to milk them (Framework)
       5 .. Then prepare a 2 dummy cows (sort of toy cows) and show to client the way in which u will milk them (UI Mockups & POC)
       6 .. If client is not satisfied then redo from step 2
       7 You actually start milking them and find that there are few problem with accessories. (Change framework)
       8 .. Redo step 4
       9 .. At last milk them and send it to onsite. (Coding over)
       10. Make sure that cow milks properly ( Testing)
       11. Onsite reports that it is not milking there.
       12. You break your head and find that onsite is trying to milk from bulls
       13. At last onsite milk them and send to client (Testing)
       14. Client says the quality of milk is not good. (User Acceptance Test)
       15. Offsite then slogs and improves the quality of milk
       16. Now the client says that the quality is good but its milking at slow rate (performance issue)
       17. Again you slog and send it with good performance.
       18. Client is happy??? By this time both the COWs aged and cant milk.
       (The software got old and get ready for next release repeat from step 1) !!!! .

How to add authentication in symfony for access rights - credentials

Today, I cam across issue where I needed to set access rights for certain user types in symfony for different modules.
Let me put up the steps and how it can be done:

First of all you need to make changes to security.yml in App directory:
/App/config/securiy.yml
For each module, depict whether it requires any authentication or not.

For example:
default:
is_secure: false
modulename1:
is_secure: true
modulename2:
is_secure: true

Go to module where you require to have users based access
i.e App/[frontend | admin ]
in my case i wanted to set rights in frontend section:
so its apps/frontend/modules/config/security.yml

all:

is_secure: true

credentials: [ credentialname1, credentialname2 ]

if certain action requires authentication and certain not than:
for exmaple:
action1 and action2 below do not require any authentication where as remaining other requires authentication based on credentital.

actionname1:

is_secure: false

actionname2:

is_secure: true

credentials: [ credentialname1 ]

all:

is_secure: true

credentials: [ credentialname2 ]

Now the final part is to assign credentials when user log-in to the system or application

Once authenticated, write the following code before any redirection:

$this->getUser()->addCredential('credentialname1');

$this->getUser()->addCredential('credentialname2');

and finally, remember to clear the cache :)

Generating a random number in JavaScript

I cam across a situation where i required to show random value from an javascript array. The below code would also be useful- if not required- in certain popular JS applications, such as random image script, or random link color generator.

In this JavaScript article, I will show you how to output a random number that falls within the range 1 to X, where X is any integer greater than 1.

The number generated may be unpredictable, but way getting it is not.
To generate a random number in JavaScript, simply use the following code:

<code>var randomnum =Math.floor(Math.random()*11)</code>

where 11 dictates that the random number will fall between 0-10. To increase the range to, say, 100, simply change 11 to 101 instead.

One we get random number, we can use the same to fetch respective value from an javascript array.

var myArray = new Array();

myArray[] = 'Value 1';

myArray[] = 'Value 2';

myArray[] = 'Value 3';

myArray[] = 'Value 4';

var randomnum = Math.floor(Math.random()*4);

If you are using jquery than to show the value you can do the following:

$('#myid').html(myArray[randomnum]);

For Plain Javascript:

document.getElementById('myid').value = myArray[randomnum];

રોજના જેવી ઍ સવાર હતી. મારે ઓફિસે જવાનું હતું. આંગણામાં પડેલું છાપુ ઉઠાવી મે પહેલા અને છેલ્લા પાના પરના અગત્યના સમાચાર પર નજર નાંખી. આ શું? છેલ્લા પાના પર મારી તસ્વીર જોઈને હું ચોંકી ઉઠ્યો. ઍ મારા અવસાનના સમાચાર હતા! મને ઍક્દમઆઘાત લાગ્યો. ' હા ! કાલે રાત્રે સુતો હતો ત્યારે છાતીમાં થોડું દુખતુ હતું ખરૂં. પણ પછી તો હું ઘસઘસાટ ઉંઘી ગયો હતો ને? '

હું ઘડિયાળ તરફ નજર કરું છું. 'અરે! દસ વાગી ગયા છે. મારી ચા ક્યાં છે? અરે! મારે ઓફિસ જવાનું કેટલું મોડું થઈ ગયું છે? મારો બૉસ મારા પર ખીજાશે. અરે! બધા ક્યાં જતા રહ્યાં? અરે! મારા આ રૂમની બહાર બધા કેમ ભેગા થયા લાગે છે?' 'અરે! આટલા બધા લોકો! ચોક્કસ કાંઇક ગરબડ લાગે છે. અરે ! કોઈક રડી રહયાં છે તો બીજા ચુપચાપ ઉભા છે.' 'અરે! આ શું? મારું શરીર તો ફર્શ પર પડેલું છે. અરે! બધા સાંભળો હું તો અહીં છું, ઍ શરીરમાં નથી.' 'ક્યાં કોઈ મને સાંભળેજ છે? અલ્યાઓ! હું મુઓ નથી જો આ રહ્યો.'

મે કરાઝીંને રાડ પાડી. પણ કોઈઍ કશું સાંભળ્યું જ નહીં. કોઈને મારામાં રસ ના હોય તેવું લાગ્યું. બધા નિશ્ચેતન પડેલા મારા શરીર તરફ શોકથી જોઈ રહ્યાં હતા. હું ફરીથી મારા સુવાના ઓરડામાં ગયો.

મે મારી જાતને પુછ્યું, 'શું હું ખરેખર મરી ગયો છું? અરે! મારી પત્ની, મારા બાળકો, મારા મા-બાપ, મારા મિત્રો - બધા ક્યાં છે?'

હું બાજુના ઓરડામાં ગયો. બધા ત્યાં રડી રહયાં હતા. ઍકમેકને આશ્વાસન આપી રહ્યાં હતા. મારી પત્ની સૌથી વધારે આક્રંદ કરી રહી હતી. તેને સૌથી વધારે દુખ થતું હોય તેવું જણાતું હતું. મારા બંને નાનકડા બાળકોને આ શું થઈ રહ્યું છે, તેની કોઈ સમજણ પડતી હોય તેમ ના લાગ્યું. પણ તેમની મા રડી રહી હતી ઍટલે તેઓ પણ રડી રહ્યાં હોય તેમ લાગ્યું.

અરે! મારા ઍ વ્હાલસૉયા બાળકોને હું બહુજ પ્રેમ કરું છું, ઍમ કહ્યાં વીના હું શી રીતે વિદાય લાઇ શકું? અરે! મારી પત્નીઍ મારી કેટલી બધી સંભાળ લીધી છે, તેમ કહ્યાં વગર હું શી રીતે મરી શકું? ઍક વાર તો ઍને હું કહીં દઉં કે, હું તેને અત્યંત ચાહું છું. અરે! માબાપ ને તો ઍક વાર કહી દઉં, કે હું જે કાંઇ પણ હતો તે તેમના કારણે હતો. મારા મિત્રો વીના મે જીવનમાં ઘણી ભૂલો કરી હોત; ઍમ ઍમને કહ્યાં વીના હું કઈ રીતે વિદાય લઉં? ઍ લોકોને મારી ખરેખર જરૂર હતી ત્યારે હું તેમના કશા કામમાં આવ્યો નથી; ઍની દિલગીરી વ્યક્ત કર્યા વીના હું શી રીતે મરી શકું? જોને પેલા ખૂણામાં કોઈક છાના આંસુ સારી રહયો છે. અરે! ઍ તો ઍક જમાનામાં મારો જીગરી દોસ્ત હતો. સાવ નાનકડા મતભેદ અને ગેરસમજના કારણે અમે બે છુટા પડ્યાં; અને અમારા અહંને કારણે કદી ભેળા જ ના થયા.

હું તેની પાસે ગયો અને મારો હાથ તેની તરફ લંબાવ્યો. મારે તેને મારી દિલગીરી સમજાવવી હતી. ફરી ઍનો જીગરી દોસ્ત બની જવું હતું. મારા દોસ્ત મને માફ કરી દે.' : ઍમ કહેવું હતું.

'અરેરે! ઍને મારો હાથ દેખાતો નથી? ઍ કેવો નિષ્ઠુર છે? હું આટલી સરળતાથી મારું હૈયુ ઠાલવી રહ્યો છું; તો પણ હજું કેટલો અભિમાની છે? ખરેખર મારે આવા લોકો માટે લાગણીવશ ન થવું જોઇઍ. પણ ઍક સેકન્ડ. કદાચ ઍને મારો હાથ નહીં દેખાતો હોય? ભૂલ્યો! મારું શરીર તો બહારના ઓરડામાં પડેલું છે ને? ઓ ભલા ભગવાન હું તો ખરેખર મરી જ ગયો છું.'

હું મારા શબની બાજુમાં બેઠો. મને બરાબરનું રડવું આવી ગયું. 'અરે! મારા ભલા ભગવાન મને થોડાક દિવસો માટે જીવતો કરી નાંખ. હું મારી પત્ની, મારા માબાપ, બાળકો, મિત્રો ઍ બધાને ઍક વખત સમજાવી દઉં કે, ઍ બધા મને કેટલા વ્હાલા છે?' ઍટલામાં મારી પત્ની મારી બાજુમાં આવી પહોંચી. ઍ કેટલી સુંદર દેખાય છે? હું બરાડી ઉઠું છું: ' અલી ઍ! તું ખરેખર સુંદર છે.' પણ ઍને ક્યાં મારા શબ્દો સંભળાય છે? 'મે કદી ઍને આવા શબ્દો પ્રેમથી કહ્યાં હતા ખરા?' હું મોટી ચીસ પાડી દઉં છું,' અરે ભગવાન મને થોડીક ક્ષણો માટે જીવતો કરી દે.' હું રડી પડુ છું.

'મને ઍક છેલ્લી તક આપી દે મારા વ્હાલા. હું મારા વ્હાલસૉયા બાળકોને ભેટી લઉં. મારી મા ને છેવટનું ઍક સ્મિત આપી દઉં. મારા બાપને મારા માટે ગૌરવ થાય ઍવા બે શબ્દ ઍમને કહીં દઉં. મારા બધા મિત્રોને મે જે કાંઇ નથી આપ્યું, ઍ માટે ઍમની દિલગીરી માંગી લઉં. મારા જીવનમાં હજી રહેવા માટે ઍમનો આભાર માની લઉં.' મે ઉંચે જોયું અને ચોધાર આંસુઍ રડી પડ્યો. મે ફરી ઍક પોક મુકી. 'અરે! પ્રભુ, મને છેલ્લી ઍક તક આપી દે મારા વ્હાલા!'....

અને..... મારી પત્નીઍ મને હળવેથી જગડ્યો અને વ્હાલથી કહ્યું, " તમે ઉંઘમાં આમ કેમ રડી રહ્યાં છો? તમને કાંઇ થાય છે? તમને કોઈ ખરાબ સપનુ આવ્યું લાગે છે." ઍક્દમ જ મને ભાન થયું, 'અરે! હું જીવું છું. મારી પત્ની મને સાંભળી શકે છે.'

મારા જીવનની ઍ સૌથી સુખદ પળ હતી.

કાલે જ મરણ આવવાનું હોય ઍમ વિચારીને આજે જીવીઍ તો ?
