1800 - Washington D.C. becomes the capital of the United States, replacing the interim capital Philadelphia.

1901 - Guglielmo Marconi receives the first transatlantic radio signal in Newfoundland. Later studies show that the signal, sent from a very powerful transmitter in Cornwall, England, must have bounced off the ionosphere twice to traverse that distance.

1913 - Mona Lisa, the famous masterpiece of Leonardo da Vinci, is located in a former Louvre employee's hotel room in Florence two years after it was stoeln from the Louvre museum in Paris.

1939 - Synthetic fiber nylon goes into commercial production at the company's new Seaford plant in Delaware, U.S. The inventor is Wallace Carothers of DuPont.

1859 - Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection is published. It is an immediate and controversial bestseller putting forward the evolution theory that challenge the idea of Biblical creation.

1963 - Lee Harvey Oswald, charged with killing U.S. President John Kennedy, is being moved between jails when nightclub owner Jack Ruby leaps from the crowds of reporters and shoots him.

1979 - Thomas McMahon, IRA member, is sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Lord Mountbatten, who was killed by a bomb on August 27, 1979, while holidaying in the Republic of Ireland. McMahon was later released in 1998 as part of the Good Friday Agreement.

In 2006, Pixar was bought by The Walt Disney Company at a valuation of $7.4 billion, making Steve Jobs the largest shareholder in Disney.

1947 - Princess Elizabeth, 21 marries Philip Mountbatten, Duke of Edinburgh, 26, at Westminster Abbey in London.

1948 - New Zealand's flightless takahe bird had only been seen four times between 1800 and 1900 and was presumed extinct. On this day, November 20, scientist Dr. Geoffrey Orbell located the first of what turned out to be a colony of 250 birds in the Murchison Mountains in South Island.

1850 - Alfred Tennyson, English poet, becomes Poet Laureate, an office he holds until his death in 1892. Queen Mary I, known as Bloody Mary for her persecution of Protestants, dies of influenza at the age of 42 and Elizabeth I becomes Queen of England. He becomes a lord in 1884.

1863 - U.S. President Lincoln delivers the Gettysburg Address when dedicating a national cemetery at the Gettysburg battlefield in Pennsylvania. Notable orator Edward Everett spoke before the president for two hours. Lincoln spoke for two minutes.

1969 - Soccer legend Pele scores his 1,000th goal in a professional football match.
