Society: A lost cause(?)

Philosophy through Technology

There is so much that can be learnt everyday. How is there so much knowledge? What is the source of this knowledge which is exponentially increasing as the days are going by?

Each brain is at work to produce new knowledge and rest are busy acquiring it. Well, at least some are. So why not take a closer look at the source. The Brain. Everyone has got one (?). What is this part which is so powerful, its running this whole world. Why humans got command of running the world? Why not dogs? Imagine a world where dogs are forming the government and humans are slaughtered in China to serve rich dogs.

So coming to the topic, how is it that our technologies are no match for our brain? It has got THE most powerful pattern recognition engine. And we are trying hard to replicate it, but getting nowhere closer to it. As one of my Prof. says, “There is no FFT in brain”. Hmm...So our brain has got a super-perfect all-powerful all-knowing neural network. Our computational neuroscience guys are trying to study small parts of it and coming up with different models. These models can be programmed and a new type of neural net is born. Everyone attacks it to solve their problems. Somewhere they perform exceptionally well and somewhere they fail miserably. But how come a human brain with billions and trillions of interconnecting neurons is capable of performing exceptionally well in all situations. Or is it just our perception. A flawed human perception created by the master, the all-knowing “brain”.

How can we really understand the philosophy of all this? Certainly not just by being a Doctor of Philosophy. Aristotle, Plato, Kant and my favorite, Nietzsche, were all philosophers. But some of them were exceptional scientists too. They were real Doctors of Philosophy. Today, philosophy has a whole different meaning. Probably you are a lunatic if you have interest in it. It has lost its lustre. Well, if I have to connect the dots between philosophy and science today, then I would go deep into the brain, rather than searching it outside.

What if we are all subjects of a grand experiment where we all possess slightly different tweaked version of same network. Running around, playing, working, creating softwares, testing them, studying ourselves, making more like us, falling in love, writing poems, blogs, observing nature, yada yada yada. A perfect machine doing its work. Achieving high performance, failing hard, maybe this is the way to find ourselves. Maybe this is how we learn the Philosophy.

Passing through the passage I chose,

Among the woods, away from chaos,

Treading and beholding my breath as I walk

Experience vs Sagacity

If you are asked to choose one of them, which one would you? Let’s pick these two and discuss them individually.

Note: By sagacity I mean to establish a quality to be wise enough to understand any given situation as quickly as possible and suggest a solution for a problem at hand with extreme precision.

Experience is a quantifiable quality measured in terms of time and exposure to a certain scenario. A person who worked for 10 years as a carpenter is more experienced to a person who worked for 2 years. It’s a simple math. But it really does not gives a clear picture of a person’s understanding and depth of knowledge in any particular subject. On the other hand we have sagacity. It’s a quality which cannot be measured, but it can be felt. Sagacity is the quality possessed by astute and dedicated individuals. A person with no knowledge of a subject can be more productive than an experienced individual at times.

Now it depends on a person whether he/she wants to gain experience or sagacity. They are not the qualities that are gained by birth. They are acquired by time. I’m not saying that an experienced person is waste and is not worth giving respect. But considering an experienced person above a capable person is certainly intolerable. I will quote Ayn Ran here. “Why should ineptitude exists and have its say?” It’s not that experienced person is inept. He/she is certainly an asset, but he should use this asset to re-define the standards and produce sagacious humans.

Since I am from IT industry, I have seen experienced individuals getting promoted based on their level of seniority and inexperienced getting oppressed even after being capable of learning more quickly than the experienced person. This is not the ideal world we would wanna create for our future generation. We would like to promote talented and enthusiastic individuals. Then only we can consider the system to be fair and wise.

When I joined my first company, I was as experienced as a new-born. But the level of transparency I experienced there made me the man I am today. All my curiosity was nurtured by highly talented and experienced leaders. I was given a highly competitive environment, where I can prove myself to be better than even an experienced employee. I loved it and I cherished it. It helped me grow as much as I desired.

I experimented with different technologies and adopted untested methods. I failed and I tried again. I was considered as much man as my seniors were. And so I became one.

I would recommend all my countrymen, with all due respect as a proud Indian, to be open-minded and not be influenced by the sheer quantum of experience a person holds. There’s more to a person than just years on the resume. I would recommend that an individual should be judged based on the capability to deduce, discuss, analyze and scale based on the situation. This will certainly result in a drastic change of one's mentality towards every phase of life, hence leading to a better society.

Brain learns slowly, experience is slow. Talent is fast. Take enough time, find your talent. Find something you love to do and invest yourself into that. Give life a shot.

Life, Universe and Everything...

Today a question popped in my head after watching a video on youtube. A question which is very common and almost every human on this planet should have thought about it once in a while.

"What is the purpose of universe and everything that exists around us?" "Why its there in being? A big fat WHY?"

I asked this very question to few of my friends and i received various set of replies. Some of them are like:

Frnd1: "Why should I care? I am concerned by what happens to myself."

Me: "Dont you feel grateful for universe to create you using stardust generated billions of years back? Dont you have curiosity to know about it and what it is upto?"

Frnd1: "how will that affect the universe? I cannot make a difference in the being of universe but I can make a difference in my being so better I think about myself rather than wasting my time in thinking about universe."

Me: "But how will you make a difference even in your life without setting a goal? And that goal should be something logical. Finally that is also a gift given to you by universe."

Frnd1: "I am a very tiny object in universe and there is a probability of having several other Earths and galaxy where someone is doing something"

Me: "Take an example of this scooty. Its a solid. It has atoms vibrating at a particular frequncy and maintaining the equilibrium of this body and hence it is stable and it exists. Likewise you are a tiny atom in this universe and you will have to contribute your part in its being. Else equilibrium will break and your existence is in danger."

... some random discussion over probability rules and mathematics.

Frnd2: "This Universe is created by God. There is a divine power governing the laws of nature and that driving force decides our and Universe's fate"

Me: "I respect your views but what about the cosmic history and all the past evidences?"

Frnd2: "We cannot possibly know this or else we would have been great sages"

So before having this discussion I had a point of view. Here goes my understanding:

- Humans came into existence 16 million years back, Earth came 46 billion years back and Universe came 100s of billions of years back. This time period is called cosmic history. So how much part of cosmic history belongs to humans? Its 0.000001%. [Its like we go for a movie and watched just 2 seconds of it yet. We do not know what happened and what's gonna happen]. So before us there were several creatures that existed and got extinct. Several species formed and got destroyed. Asteroids hit, rainfall, ice age, etc. So why this is happening? What's the final product?

Let's look at it as a chemical reaction. Each chemical has a starting product -> an intermediate unstable product -> final product

So the intermediate unstable product obviously doesn't live long enough and soon gets converted to another more stable form. So in case of universe and Earth, many intermediate unstable products formed, destroyed, converted. If we look at our percentage of living we also did not live long enough to be called a stable product yet. So are we a by-product of Universe reaction? How long this intermediate result gonna last? What's there next? If we are the final stable product, didn't it take too long to form it? Is Universe so inefficient? If we are just an unstable state then how should we contribute to be a good final product? What's the purpose of human life and hence What's the purpose and motif of Universe?

Its said that our (Indian) vedas were written by highly learned sages who knew everything. Still they were humans and they found out what happened before in the "so-called movie". They found out and they wrote stories based on accumulated wisdom of ages. I think what our aim can be is to understand the knowledge accumulated till now through vedas, etc and try to contribute to it further.

Javascript Cache or Piggy-backing your browser?

This article demonstrates how any particular set of data can be preserved across various screens without creating heavy server objects like session or request. So basically it does not need a server for preserving form values, xhr response, global variables which may be needed across pages.

So how do we achieve the above described functionality without a server? We definitely need a temporary store which doesn’t get destroyed on page refresh. What does not gets destroyed even on refreshing the page and remains on client? Yeah! It’s the client itself. Here, by saying the client we mean the Browser.

Browser window remains even on page refresh and so remains the ‘window’ object. The window object, which is considered as the grand-father of all DOM elements in the beautiful world of JavaScript. So, here we use the window object to attach our key value pairs with it and hence preserving it across the screens since it’s a part of window object now.

We will point out a bad javascript practice here. Since we are using a property of window object which is currently not used by the page, on actual use of this property our values can be destroyed or over-ridden or they can overload the browser and crash it unexpectedly (too dangerous!). So instead of storing those values in a persistent object, we are piggy-backing the browser memory.

But how do we make the data transferrable from one screen to other as raw types? Answer lies in the golden works of Sir Douglas Crockford.

We can use our key-value pair to be stored as name attached to window object and on page unload, we can save the values by strigify-ing the json data. After setting this value we can get it anywhere till the session is cleared, hence creating temporary cache storage on client side.

Tribute to a great leader

Till later part of my adolescence, I was unaware of most visionary figures of the world and several great people who impacted the thinking of human being. During the process of familiarizing myself with technology and computers I came to know about various types of products, current trends, legacies and people behind them.

One of those flawless personalities whom I started admiring was the co-founder of Apple Inc., Steve Jobs. I cannot say anything that the world already doesn’t know about him. But I can certainly count him as an inspiring figure in my career and eventual behaviour development. I see him as a person who binds beauty and divinity with technology. A glorious man to be looked-upon, striving throughout his life to provide classy and complete products.

I was very happy the day when I got selected in my first job interview and my employer gifted me a brand-new Apple iPod as a token of appreciation. I admire the beauty of products that Jobs has made us accessible to.

It’s a great loss to the world but Jobs will always be remembered because of his extremely creative ideas, his humour, his quotes and his motif from life.

{First things first}. A very commonly used phrase to decide the priorities. So what about your first job? Your first girlfriend? Your first success? Your first failure? Your first countable decision? And so on...

Now lets come to the current context. A day starting with a nice fresh sunny morning, followed by hour long rush of Chennai traffic, and reaching the destination hoping to have a wonderful optimistic start. A group of 15 freshers entering a huge building with almost similar thoughts. A group of people with nearly similar exposure to industry. All of 'em curious to know the next part of the story. All of 'em ready to try new tools provided by the new alma mater.

So here we are at the starting point of a new journey.

So we finally feel at home now with few confusions and differences . We are hired to ascend :P. Though english doesn't seem to be a very common language, communication is over-rated.

Work seems to be fun now with highly caring sprecialists. The crew of strangers became friends.
Seniors will be seniors and will be respected. New sports introduced as a relief to work. And the day starts now with a cup of coffee, ends with a friendly game of table-tennis.

Finally...Found how to make Win-XP bootable USB

Why would anyone want to install Windows XP from a pen drive??

May be their CD drive isn’t working properly like mine, or
They don’t want to waste money on a CD

More over installation from a flash drive is faster compared to a CD.
Before we go on with the tutorial here’s what you’ll need

1 USB flash drive, 1GB or larger
1 Windows XP installation disc
Assorted files that I’ll describe as we go along.
Note: Your BIOS should support usb boot, some older computers may not support USB boot.

Preparing the flash drive
First up, we need to prepare the flash drive.

Download and unzip this file, which should contain 2 folders: 1 titled Bootsect, and the other USB_prep8.
Navigate to the USB_prep8 folder and click on usb_prep8.cmd. This will bring up a Windows console window.

Press any key to continue and a PeToUSB window will open.
Make sure your flash drive is selected, and click start to format your flash drive.
When the format is complete, click OK, but do not close the PeToUSB window or the Windows Console.
Open a new console window by typing “cmd” into the run box in the Windows Start Menu.

Find your Bootsect folder (if you’re not used to DOS commands, you can type “dir” to list directories and files, type “cd foldername” to navigate to a folder name – called foldername in this example, and if there’s a long folder name you can save time by typing the “cd” and just the first few letters and then hitting the Tab key to fill in the rest of the name).

Once you’re in the Bootsect folder, type “bootsect.exe /nt52 g:” if “g” is the letter assigned to your flash drive. If it’s E, then change the letter to e. If it’s Z, make it z. Get it?
When this is done, you should see a message letting you know that the bootcode was updated, and you can close this console window (but not the other console window).
Close the PeToUSb Window, but make sure not to close the remaining console window yet
You should now see a list of 8 options in the console.
Select one and find the drive with your Windows installation disc.

Select 2 and pick a random drive letter (but not one that’s already on your PC, since this will be a virtual drive used for copying your files).
Select 3 and enter the drive letter for your USB flash drive.
Select 4 and follow the rest of the on-screen directions and you should be all set.

The process should take about 15-20 minutes. When it’s done, you should have a bootable USB stick that you can use to install Windows XP the same way you would if you had a CD/DVD drive.
A few notes here. First of all, there’s a chance you may get down to step 15 and the program will tell you that it can’t create the virtual drive. This may happen if you’ve already gone through the whole process and are trying to do it again to fix problems. The solution seems to be rebooting your computer and trying again. Or at least that’s what worked for me.
Second, if you use NLite to shrink/slipstream/otherwise modify your Windows XP installation file, make sure you do not remove “manual installation files,” or your USB stick will be pretty much useless.

Once your usb drive is ready, go to your bios and set USB to first position in boot order. Now plug the usb and restart.

Make sure you back up your important documents and files, firefox bookmarks, and drivers if you lost your drivers cd.

Human vs Facebook

For those who are in my FB friends' list, they know that I de-activated my FB account for few weeks. That time i spent in an amazing way and it was quite productive+fruitful.

I appreciate Zhukerberg for creating such a wonderful web-app, which changed the definition of web 2.0 and other web-standards. It gave personality to Internet and benefitted many people in various forms.

But what about HUMAN?!

I heard back in my schools that "Human is a 'social' Animal". But now I think they need to change this phrase. People find more people over Internet. They connect with those who they never even met. Many times you come across a person with whom you never ever talked but you are "friends" on FB. They dont say a 'hi' when they meet, but they "chat-ping-like-comment".

FB was supposed to change the definition of Internet. Increase the interaction of the ones whom we forgot. Make people meet when they are free.

But, instead of doing that, it has changed the definition of Human. Now, a majority of people on this Planet are "SOCIAL" in the sense of FB+Internet. But, in a broader perspective, we have lost the social-ity , and became just ANIMALS.

Soon, they'll teach in schools that- "Human is an animal".[which is obviously truth].

You must read this if you are a final year student.

I may be wrong somewhere but i strongly feel that the testing criteria of final year students need a reformation.

Engineering, now a days, is a common stream for many students who foresight der career as a person of innovation, a person who can visualize the solution of many problems in his domain; can come up with extra-ordinary ideas to beautify human life.

But, is the testing criteria for engineers well-engineered???

Three precious years of our course we spend in getting accustomed, learning various perspectives of life, facing different situations in our Industrial domains, learning technologies and trends.

So, what about the final-year? Should we continue giving several tests each month, cramming the xerox, books and internet material?? What about the thought-process,innovation,etc which we thought before joining the course??

Final year is the last milestone where we have chance of developing our mentality in such a way so as to face the career coming ahead. Employers will have a lotta expectations. We will be given all the real-time problems to deal with and that time we will fail to perform up-to the mark.

So why cant we reform the norms for final-year students??

The tests shud be more practical in nature. It shud not test the bookish knowledge and shud make a student think abt the solutions. The things which can be referred shud not be tested in exams. They shud test the concepts and make us feel to think ahead of the HERD.

Please correct me if am wrong.

I was wondering how these small add-ons just fully make us fall in love with the functions they provide.

I determined to start with firefox add-on development. And I came up with EasyZoomProxy :)

Regarding the name. I initially named it as "hello" ... in any case it doesnt look like an add-on...so i professionalized it and named it easy-zoom-proxy ....since its a proxy changer and zoom because my friends often hear me saying that word...

Its kinda TM .. ;)

Displaying PNG images in IE-6

Till date Internet explorer is still the most widely used browser since it comes with MS Windows.

So many web-designers are concerned with the problem of displaying PNG images in IE-6 or previous versions. It gives transparency thus it is required at many places.

The problem can be fixed by a clever use of JavaScript.

Follow these steps in order to get perfect results:

Suppose you have an image ABC.PNG

Step 1: Download a js file of DD_belatedPNG_0.0.8a.js from

Step 2: write a small file with the name ie-fix.js and content

DD_belatedPNG.fix('.png,.name');

Step 3: Step 1: Create a span tag wherever u want to put your image and give its class as class="png"

Eg :

Step 4: Put your image as background image of this id.

Eg: #abc{

Background-image:url(‘…/abc.png’);

}

Done!

Make your pendrive,bootable...

Hi Guys,

There may be times when your CD-ROM does not work properly or may be you don't have a DVD to write the image of OS you need to install on your system.

So all you need to do is to have a 4GB pendrive and get started. Actually pendrive is flash memory so it installs faster than DVDs. enjoy!

(applicable for Win Vista and Win 7)

Step 1: First you need to format the pendrive or USB drive in NTFS format. This can be done by right clicking your pendrive icon and choosing format option.

Step 2: Now from the start menu right click on command prompt and choose "Run as administrator".

Step 3: Now type the following commands, hitting enter after each command
( ;) being more explanatory)
note:commands are not case-sensitive.

- diskpart .The disk part program windows will open.
- list disk .This will show the list of disks in your computer.
- Note down the disk number of your pendrive from the list eg. Disk 1.
- select disk 1 . If your pendrive is disk 1 in list
- clean
- CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY
- SELECT PARTITION 1
- ACTIVE
- FORMAT FS=NTFS . (be patient it takes some time)
- ASSIGN
- EXIT . (Now the disk partition program will exit)

Now we need to give some more commands.

Open the location where you have the image (.iso) file of the OS.
Open it with winrar.
Extract the BOOT folder to a convinient location . say C:\BOOT
Now goto command prompt and bring it to c:\boot>
If your pendrive letter is I: type this command - BOOTSECT.EXE/NT60 I:
to update your USB drive with bootmgr code.

Finally extract all the contents from the Windows Vista/7 .iso image to your Pendrive. Make sure you don't cause any errors.

Now set the boot priority to your pendrive from bios and you can proceed with the installation as normal.
