Western Digital today on May 22, 2013 expanded their WD My Book series with a massive 4TB addition. Earlier My book series had the hightest of 3TB option which is now pushed a 1TB further with an increase in price too.

As we know, WD My Book is the desktop hard drive expandable option with super transfer rates and obviously supporting USB 3.0 which makes it a perfect solution for backup and storing large files such as HD content. These MyBook provides the best solution to never ending memory needs and for backups. My Book are compatible with Mac and PC operating systems with special software support. Windows PC users can make use of WD SmartWare™ software, while Mac users can take advantage of the features offered by Apple® Time Machine® to protect their data. After months of speculation around the new Xbox , Microsoft finally announced the new Xbox today at Microsoft’s Redmond campus.

Microsoft calls it the new all-in-one systems for entertainment,games and television.

Diving down on the specs we get an 8-Core CPU with 8 GB of RAM, a 500GB hard drive, a Blu-ray drive, Full 1080p HDMI in and out ports, USB 3.0, 802.11n wireless, and a Built-in Blue Ray Disc player.

They also announced the all new Kinect which is even more accurate and sensitive. it looks a lot different than the first connect.

Here is what Microsoft had to say about it:

Redesigned Kinect: It includes a 1080p, HD camera that captures video at 30 frames per second. All-new, active-infrared capabilities increase precision, allowing it to work in nearly any lighting condition and expanding field of view to accommodate a greater variety of room sizes. Microsoft proprietary Time-of-Flight technology measures the time it takes individual photons to rebound off you to create unprecedented accuracy and precision. The new noise-isolating multimicrophone array filters ambient sound to recognize natural speaking voices even in crowded rooms.

The new kinect can READ heart-rate from the paleness of ones skin.

Our goal is to reveal temporal variations in videos that are difficult or impossible to see with the naked eye and display them in an indicative manner. Our method, which we call Eulerian Video Magnification, takes a standard video sequence as input, and applies spatial decomposition, followed by temporal filtering to the frames. The resulting signal is then amplified to reveal hidden information. Using our method, we are able to visualize the flow of blood as it fills the face and also to amplify and reveal small motions. Our technique can run in real time to show phenomena occurring at temporal frequencies selected by the user.

The device will also be the first platform to release the next installment in Activision Blizzard Inc’s (ATVI.O) blockbuster shooter franchise, “Call of Duty”.

Microsoft also announced that acclaimed movie maker Steven Spielberg will be executive-producing a television series based on Microsoft’s blockbuster sci-fi game “Halo” — one of the game industry’s largest franchises by revenue — for the Xbox One.

Jolla reveals their first Sailfish OS device “Unlike the rest”

Jolla a startup company from Finland launched its first Sailfish OS running device with its pre-orders starting today. The curiosity of “the other half” teaser turned out to be replaceable color shells alike what we have seen with some of the models of the Nokia Lumia series. Talking more about the OS, the operating system will run its native apps as well as Android apps seemlessly on the same user interface. The pre-production device running Sailfish OS was showcased at Mobile World congress this year. Some of the hands-on videos can be found on YouTube.

The first smartphone from Jolla features a 4.5-inch Estrade display running on dual-core processor with 16 GB internal memory and an option to expand it via microSD card slot. The other USP of the device include 8MP AF camera, user replaceable battery and user exchangeable cover shells.

Review – Micromax Canvas HD A116

Micromax the infamous Indian smartphone manufacturer, probably due to their devices had launched the Canvas HD A116 after the success of A110 popularly known as Canvas 2. Micromax Canvas HD is the Android 4.1 running quad-core device with 5 inch HD display for 14k INR. Sounds very tempting is it really worth buying? We had tested this device for 2 weeks and got our views on the same.

Sales Package:

Starting with the retail package, the Micromax Canvas HD A116 comes packed in a small box with 17,999 as the printed MRP. The box contains obviously the handset, battery, USB cable for data synchronization and charging the power adapter and the headset. Along with these are the usual user manuals and warranty card etc.

Build:

For 14k we never had high expectations from the build and we were not disappointed. The plastic used is not of any good quality material. It feels the same way as earlier Micromax Canvas variants if you have used any except the significant curves at the back which are new to this model. Everyone wishes for curves isn’t it? (correct me if I am wrong, heh).

Alike the One X, the Canvas HD has a bulge at the back on center which makes it easy to hold in hands. The new Micromax branding can be seen on the bottom along with speaker grill and 8MP camera on the top.

On the front, we have the earpiece along with proximity sensor and 2MP front camera. Below these three resides the 5inch 720p HD display with four capacitive buttons at the bottom.

The left edge houses the volume rocker and right has the power/standby button. In all the form factor smartphone is average, justifying the price.

Hardware:

We all know Micromax Canvas HD runs on a quad-core processor with 1GB and 8MP camera with 5-inch 720p display but let us go to some more details. The chipset used in the device is running camera with 5-inch 720p IPS LCD display.

The MTK MT6589 chipset packs a 1.2 Ghz MediaTek quad-core processor and 1GB of RAM and PowerVR SGX544 GPU. With 4 GB of internal storage and a microSD card slot for expansion upto 32GB you can still expect some issues because by default the apps install directly to the main memory. It supports Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth v4.0, HSDPA, 21 Mbps; HSUPA, 11 Mbps and microUSB v2.0. The usual sensors include Accelerometer, gyro and proximity.

Camera:

Canvas HD has a 8MP rear camera with autofocus and LED flash which can shoot videos upto 720p @30fps whereas front-facing 2MP camera can only do VGA video recording. We had tested the camera in both low light conditions and daylight conditions and came to this conclusion, that camera is the one thing that does not work up to par.

Due to the lack of BSI sensor the low light imaging is not meant for the device even the daylight pictures were not too impressive. It just works, thats what we would say. The camera UI is the one of the stock with the same shooting modes. Here are the sample pictures attached for reference.

Software:

Micromax has kept the operating system nearest to that of vanilla rom with few changes in the UI layer like customized dialer etc. They have also bundled their applications which include the Micromax Store along with Facebook, and other Google Apps as system apps that can’t be uninstalled unless you root your device. We thought it would have been better if they had skipped whatever changes they did with the vanilla rom even though they are not much. Android 4.1 is quite slick on the device without any noticeable lag. The device performance is too quite impressive judging it by the price.

Conclusion:

After using the device for two weeks, we can to the conclusion that Micromax Canvas HD A116 is a good phone. MediaTek quad-core processor with 1 GB RAM performance is even appreciable. The 8MP camera is a disappointment but what else can we expect at this price. Micromax has tried to get the maximum features at a budget price and even has succeeded upto a level. Overall the phone is very good and can be considered as an option for 14k price point. Other leading Indian manufacturers also have similar kind of smartphones but only Zen Mobiles Ultrafone 701 HD seems to comparable with this.

Recent reports tell us that Canvas HD has been in shortage from a long time and there has been a price hike for the smartphone now. At this increased price, we don’t think it is really worth buying this smartphone. Even though the price is still appealing for the specs but this phone won’t last for long.

Panasonic launched P51 Android based smartphone in India for ₹26,900

Panasonic Mobile made a wildcard entry into the mobile market this time with their smartphone series. Starting with the P series which will be their flagship device, they introduced P51 the budget quad-core Android.

Panasonic in a press conference in New Delhi, India announced the Android based quad-core smartphone P51 for ₹26,900. Alike the other quad-core devices which come under the budget category P51 also runs on a 1.2Ghz quad-core processor with 1 GB RAM and 4GB internal memory. This smartphone runs on Android 4.2 and features 5MP rear camera and 1.3MP rear camera. It also supports dual sim standby and is powered by a massive 2500 mAh battery. Despite of these specifications, P51 is just 8.5mm thick and 135 gms in weight. The smartphone comes with a stylus and magnetic flip cover which turns off the display when flipped on like, Apple’s smart cover.

If you noticed the technical specifications look a lot similar to the Micromax Canvas HD and it has been confirmed now that it is. This too runs on MediaTek 6569 chipset that is with the same RAM, processor and GPU. But at this price tag are they justifying the device? Staying on Windows XP to cost three times more than migrating to Windows 8

According to recent studies by Microsoft commissioned research firm IDC, companies using Windows XP are prone to spend more than three times than migrating to the latest Windows 8. As per the an estimate, cost of upgrading (assuming no enterprise license agreement and three-year amortization period) will be US$ 95 whereas the cost of non-migrating and staying at the present OS will be around US$ 300 per seat/user followed by almost a double the cost in the subsequent year if they choose to opt for a custom support contract to stay on Windows XP post April 2014 because Microsoft plans to end support for Windows XP on April, 08, 2014. The non-migration cost is only the documentable cost as this does not include costs related to business loss due to security and data breach threats, productivity loss and other similar factors so it is expected to go even more as nothing is perfect.

Companies should migrate to the newer version for :

enhanced user experience
stronger ecosystem of players
better management of client devices
improved security and data protection
alignment to upcoming mobility adoption and 6) becoming future touch-based application(s) ready.

Companies like Bharti Airtel have seen savings of Rs. 2,000 per PC by moving from Windows XP to Windows 7.

“Approx 50-60% installed PC base in the enterprises are still running Windows XP. This is an alarming situation as non-migration puts businesses at risk of security breaches and could potentially create a big dent to the company’s brand image” said Amrish Goyal, Director, Windows Business Group Microsoft Corporation (India) Pvt. We all know Opera as the best alternative web browser, but now they have been to a lot more. Last week on 8th May 2013, Opera had announced its partnership with seven Indian mobile OEMs to preinstall the Opera Mini mobile web browser on all the manufacturers’ upcoming handsets, phablets and tablets running on the Android mobile operating system. Celkon, Karbonn, Lava, Intex, Fly, Zen, and HCL ME tablets will have Opera Mini as the exclusive third-party browser pre-installed with the new handset.

What is Opera up to?

Opera group founded in Norway in 1994 and since then the have been constantly innovating. After meeting the super high demands of the consumers in US and UK or even other parts of the globe (courtesy Shop and Ship and Borderlinx), Nexus 4 has been finally launched in India for ₹25,999.

Unlike Nexus 7, Nexus 4 is not directly distributed by Google but it will be LG the original OEM behind the masterpiece. LG will be providing one year warranty along with the handset at their service centres. Nexus 4 has been the hot selling product on the Play Store due to its technical specifications at this aggressive pricing. Moreover, developers always keep an eye over the Nexus line-up to make their apps versatile and compatible with the latest hardware. Rest, I don’t think Nexus 4 needs an introduction at this point of time.

LG’s Nexus 4 is priced at 25,999 and will be available at selected LG exclusive brand shops, multi brand outlets across India. Flipkart also started pre-order at ₹25,990 yesterday providing full Indian warranty.

The below piece of text was freshly found on the Google Developer website just minutes ago the Official keynote of Google I/O 2013.

The listing was shortly removed and made unavailable but we were quick enough to extract a screenshot to prove its existence. The listing was available here. We feel its a safe bet to expect the next version of Android in just a few hours as the big even kicks off.

Android 4.3 is still largely a mystery, but the update is expected to support Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and the OpenGL for Embedded Systems 3.0 graphics specification. BLE would help conserve battery life on mobile devices that connect to peripherals like smartwatches and speakers, and OpenGL allows for advanced visual effects in games and graphics-intensive applications. We’ll find out for sure when Google kicks off its keynote at 9AM PT / 12PM ET
