Shredded coconut – one small cup

Method:

Put all ingredients in a large vessel. Add salt according to taste. Add water gradually while kneading the mixture to make a soft dough.

Pick up a lemon sized lump of the dough and flatten it out on a greased griddlewith your fingertips. . Dip your fingers in water to help spread out a smooth, thin roti. Now place the griddle on fire, add a little oil around the sides, like you would for dosa) and cook on a normal flame. Cook both sides of the roti and serve hot with butter and a chutney of your choice..

For the next roti, you have to cool the griddle and repeat the process. So keep two griddles to use alternately.

Appam, the south Indian Dessert

Appam is made with “maida” – the regular flour you use to make cakes.

To make the appam sweet you need jaggery. Grate the jaggery and take one cup of jaggery for one cup of flour. Add water to jaggery and let it melt.

Add the flour to jaggery and make a thick paste, similar to pancake mix.

Add grated dry coconut (Kopra), cashew nuts and cardamom powder to enrich the mix.

Take some cooking oil in a deep frying pan and heat it over medium heat.

Take a ladle full of the flour and jaggery mix and pour it in the middle of the pan to form a circular shape.

Deep fry it until cooked.

Note: After heating the jaggery and water and melting it, you have to allow it to cool and then add the flour to it.

You can add two tbs of grated coconut (not fresh coconut, but dry one) to one cup of flour.

There is another appam that is made with roasted rice. I will post it next.

Appam batter:

Our body needs carbohydrates, proteins, calcium, fats, vitamins, mineral salts, fibre.

Dosa has all this.

Carbohydrates are the source of energy. Carbon, Hydrogen and Oxygen are essential to keep us energetic and active. Food items such as potato, rice, spaghetti, yams, bread and cereals contain carbohydrates. These are the food items rich in starch.

Dosa has rice – starch – carbohydrates.

Proteins are turned into amino acids by our digestive system before they enter our blood. Proteins contain Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen, Nitrogen and Sulphur. Proteins are absolutely necessary for the growth of our body and for repairing injured cells.

Dosa has lentils – proteins

Fat is also a source of energy. Just like proteins fats too contain Carbon, Hydrogen and Oxygen. Just by avoiding fat we cannot avoid putting on weight. Carbohydrates and proteins can also turn into fat. So it is necessary eat the right amount of energy containing food. How much energy we can take in? Naturally it depends on how much we can use through physical day-to-day activities and exercise.

To make dosa you use cooking oil. That gives you fat. And you can make it, according to your preference. Make it almost fat free or add more oil to make the dosa crispy, the choice is yours.

Mineral salts such as iron, calcium, sodium and iodine are necessary for different purposes. Iron is necessary for making hemoglobin. Decrease of hemoglobin leads to symptoms of anemia. Especially for pregnant women it is crucial to avoid problems of anemia. Calcium is essential for our bones, teeth and muscles. Nerve cells need sodium and our thyroid glands require iodine.

Dosa has calcium, iron and magnesium.

Fiber is important for good digestion, clear skin and healthy bowel movements.

Dosa has dietary fiber.

You can make different types of dosa. For example, carrot dosa gives you A. If you need more carbohydrates you can make masala dosa. Masala dosa has potatoes and that gives you more starch and more carbohydrates.

Dosa can be a good nutritious healthy meal for young and old including children.

Without speaking a word of Italian, you can travel in Italy. You are ready to conquer Il Bel Paese armed with just an outgoing personality, a genuine smile, and Italian hand signals. Or, are you?

Still, before you go, you are better off studying Italian. But utilize these Italian hand signals to help you.

Un momento!

This translates to, “one moment, please” in English. Just point your index finger upwards like the number 1. This can also convey “may I speak, please?”, but it’ll be needed to learn to speak italian then.

Ho fame

This is a plea to your hosts to feed you, translated as “I’m hungry.” You must hit your stomach with the side of your flat hand, which ought to convey a clear message. Still you will require some Italian food words to understand Italian food; otherwise, you will find yourself sick of pasta and pizza. You’ll understand the difference between pollo and polipo if you learn italian. Who knows what allergies these foods might give you?

Ehi tu, vieni qui

This is one hand signal you will do well to use with care. It translates to “Hey! Come here, you!”, which can seem either rude or sexually inviting. It’s made by a come hither signal also applied by numerous Americans. When you want someone to come and help you, you are better off learning to say “Prego, potete aiutarli?”

Silenzio

This translates to “silence”, and uses the universal signal of silence by pressing your index finger to your lips. If you have to emphasize why you want silence, however, you’ll have to study Italian.

Idea!

You would have effectively conveyed that you have an idea when you look happy with your hand on your head. When you tell them about this idea, however, studying Italian will be useful.

Perfetto

This looks like the American gesture for “okay” – the thumb and index fingers forming a circle. This is used to praise someone – very handy if you can’t speak italian.

Scusi, devo andare al bagno

This is a very important gesture that means “I have to go to the rest room.” Simply hold up your index and middle fingers, put on a pained expression, and you’ll be pointed to the closest bathroom. Very useful indeed for the diarrhea-prone traveler!

It is said that Italian hand gestures are poetry in motion. Still, you have to study Italian to read street signs, billboards, and books. Why not get the best of both worlds, then?

The adage is that you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. But can you judge a bottle of wine by its label?

What Does It All Mean?

There’s often so much information on a wine label that it’s difficult to figure it all out. Most wine labels contain the same basic information. This includes the winery (or wine maker), the country or region where the grapes were grown (often known as the appellation), the vintage (the year the grapes were harvested, not the year the wine was bottled), and the variety (what type of grapes the wine was made from – commonly known as the type of Fruit Wines). The alcohol content of the wine is also included on the wine label. There are other things that are sometimes included on a wine label, depending on the country where it was bottled. For example, wines bottled in the United States are required to have consumer warnings and the name and address of the bottler. Wine labels also can include the ripeness of the grapes, information about the estate or winery where it was bottled, and any other information the wine maker wants to include.

Is a Wine Label Just Information?

What once was just used to mark what was in the bottle, wine labels have become a spot to showcase artwork and make for a unique collection for a Rose Wines lover. While they may seem like an odd collection, the artwork on wine labels can be extremely beautiful, and a label may remind you of a special trip or an important event where you enjoyed the wine. And wine labels are certainly easier to save and display than empty bottles! Collecting wine labels has become so popular that manufacturers have even developed special cases to display them, and wine labels actually have their own category on eBay! Avid collectors often have their own websites or blogs devoted to sharing their collection with others.

Can I Make My Own Wine Label?

Wine labels and making wine can also be customized. There are companies that allow you to create your own piece of artwork to use as a wine label. In fact, this was featured on a recent episode of the tv show The Bachelor, where the bachelor and his date created a unique piece of art that was then made into a wine label. Bottles of wine with custom labels are popular for weddings or anniversaries, where guests can drink wine that celebrates the couple of honor. They can even be given as favors of the big event.

Considered by many poker superstars to be “the best unknown player in the world”—a label first bestowed by Phil Hellmuth on Card Player’s “The Circuit” radio show, Canadian Yukon Brad Booth has firmly established himself amongst poker’s elite players. Long a mainstay in the biggest cash games in Las Vegas casinos, Brad plays in the staggering side action (including $200-$400 No Limit Hold ‘Em) amongst the world’s top players with the likes of Phil Laak, Daniel Negreanu, Antonio Esfandiari, Barry Greenstein, and Johnny Chan. Booth has recently expanded upon his poker-playing repertoire to include tournament play, with results equally impressive to his consistent dominance in side games. Most notably, Booth this past June played his way to a third-place finish in the World Poker Tour’s Mandalay Bay Championship, earning himself a hefty payday of nearly $320,000.

Born and raised in Vancouver, Canadian Poker Player Booth honed his unique playing style in the same sort of smoky, backroom games that poker legends such as Doyle Brunson and T.J. Cloutier once populated decades earlier in Texas. Unlike many of today’s younger breed of player, Booth, now 31, never read a poker book while learning the game, instead relying upon experience and an acute instinct for reading people and situations to achieve his success.

However, that acute instinct was a developed at price. Bradley, at the age of 16, felt as though his scholastic pursuits, within the confines of a classroom, had reached a quintessential defining moment – he made the decision to leave. Unfortunately, Mr. Booth had just negotiated with his parents that he would receive a car upon completion of the school year. As Bradley’s choices were mutually exclusive, he opted for a cover-up. In an endless succession of stealthy covert operations, he snuck out of the house each morning with his Little Caesar’s Pizza uniform taking the place of his books. He worked at the pizza parlour, funding his nightly romps at the poker table. Again, the undercover, and underage Booth, gained access to private card rooms throughout western Canada. As he had yet to secure the car at this point, young Bradley traversed the lower mainland on the good graces of his friendly neighbours. Often reaching into his pocket for his last $8 on a round of $4-8 Limit Hold ‘Em desperately trying to get three way action so he could get right back into the game. Unfortunately, Brad found himself destitute after many of his card room escapades- forcing him to hitch-hike to and from his house, work, and newly assumed night owl position as a burgeoning young poker room shark. As his parents were operating under the auspices Brad was both attending school and engaging in some very late night ‘study sessions’ – Brad received his reward of an ’87 Chevy Sprint to transport him, to and from his studies… at the card room.

It was those back alley smoke-filled card rooms that gave Brad Booth his flair and flavour. Utilising an unparalleled aggressive style, friendly table banter, and his carefree and effervescent personality, Mr. Booth quickly caught the eye of poker legend, Doyle Brunson when they played together at the 2005 World Series of Poker. Recognizing Bradley as a talent to bank on in the near future, Doyle signed Booth under the banner of DoylesRoom.com, an online poker site with many notable poker professionals. As a pioneer of the online poker world, Booth’s swift and assertive play has translated to some real world success. With some impressive cashes including $87,755 at the 2005 Fiesta al Lago No-Limit Hold’em, $48,300.00 at the 2005 4th Annual Five Diamond World Poker Classic, as well as $43,935.00 at the 2006 4th Annual Five-Star World Poker Classic, coupled with the dedication and conviction required to sit in 16 hour sessions every day for 3 years; it is no wonder why this Yukon resident has caught the eye of this legend.
