Kate & Shmuel's wedding photos - Hamilton Gardens - sneak peek! 28th September

Hi guys,

On Saturday we had the pleasure of shooting Kate & Shmuel's wedding at the Hamilton Gardens.

We've known the Jacobs family (Kate's parents) for years now, as Amber used to work for them at the Garden Terrace Restaurant - so it was really special for us to have the chance to share in their wedding day.

We started off in the morning with Shmuel - who is a hairdresser & make up artist - doing hair & makeup for the flowergirls & family - which was so cool, and something we've never before had the chance to see!!

We then headed across to see Kate, who was looking stunning in her dress -

It was then off to the Victorian Greenhouse at the Hamilton Gardens for the ceremony - officiated by the fantastic Rosanne Hannah.

There were a few tears too - I love this shot of Shmuel's mother -

Afterwards, we headed out for a wander around the gardens - dodging other bridal parties as we went - for some photos...

As you can see in some of the photos above, Kate & Shmuel were busy practicing their first dance, which they had beautifully choreographed - and after a delicious meal at the Garden Terrace, they had the chance to do the real thing...

Promptly joined on the dance floor by their friends & family -

Right at the end of the evening, we wandered around the lake to the waterfall, which is lit up at night - and with a little bit of additional lighting we were able to finish up with some lovely, romantic shots..

It was a beautiful day - thank you both so much for being the people you are - and for having us along to celebrate with you!

Leehan Family Portrait - 20th September

I love sunny weather!!

Unfortunately, that is today - yesterday was freezing cold & raining - a great time to go up the top of a mountain for family portraits!!

The Leehan's made excellent work of not looking cold, though - and we got some fantastic shots - all the time surrounded by nothing but the mist, and the songs of around 20 tuis. Fantastic!

Steph & Kyle's Cheltenham Wedding Photos - sneak peek!

Hi guys,

On Friday, I headed up to Auckland to photograph Steph and Kyle's wedding - which was at Cheltenham Beach.

As Amber was busy teaching, I was in need of a second photographer - and was lucky to be joined by the lovely Lauren from Lab 7 - who is a fantastic photographer.. check out her work here :)

I love the wide shot of all the guests enjoying the ceremony, under the shade of the magnificent tree, with Rangitoto in the background.

After the ceremony, we headed up North Head for some cool shots with the bridal party, and finished up down on the beach below - before heading back to their reception at McHughes Restaurant.

It was a fantastic day - thanks for inviting us along to share a part in it!

Chris & Becs' wedding photos - sneak peek! 13th September

Hi guys,

Yesterday, we had the pleasure of photographing Chris & Becs' fantastic wedding - with the ceremony at St. Mary's Cathedral in Hamilton East, and then some photos around various Hamilton locations.

We kicked off the bridal party photos at a cool location that had some cool 'farm' style elements - big open fields & trees, and plenty of random junk lying around for us to make use of!

The bridal party also managed to fashion a picnic table out of an old hot water cylinder - some good old kiwi ingenuity never goes far astray!

We then headed into town, and shot some cool images at the Bank restaurant, which is where Becs & Chris both used to work, and where they met! It's always fun to shoot in places that hold a special significance to our couples - and with some great architecture thrown in as a bonus!

Finally, we finished up at another spot which Amber and I had discovered about 2 days prior to the wedding - and just had to shoot there! Big, towering pine trees with a winding path twisting through the center.

It was an awesome day - and showed us just how much we've missed shooting weddings over the winter period! (The sore muscles today are another reminder of what happens when you have a few months off!!)

Father's Day family portrait - 7th September

Hi guys,

Yesterday we caught up with the lovely Nooyen family - who had decided to get Dad a family portrait session as a Father's Day gift - and what a cool gift it was!

We had a great time photographing out on their farm, which had a fantastic assortment of sheds, fields, and gates - all of which made for some awesome photo backgrounds, while being meaningful at the same time.

30th August - Daffodil Day

Last Friday (28th August) was, as I'm sure you all know, Daffodil Day.

I had the chance to participate in a really cool project, being organized by NZIPP photographer Chris Hillock.

Basically, it's an initiative between the NZIPP & the National Bank to produce a book on "A Day in The Life of Daffodil Day" - to celebrate 20 years of Daffodil Day and what it has done to support cancer research, and those with cancer.

Sales from the book will be going back into the Cancer Society.

The focus will be on people's experiences with Daffodil Day - ranging from volunteers & collectors, through to people that have been affected by cancer in their lives.

Each person's story in the book will be accompanied by imagery from a NZIPP photographer - so there were photogs all across the country teaming up with people on the day to record these people's stories.

I can't blog the images, but I can tell you we had a great time, and got some really cool shots!

Once the book is released, I'll pop another post up here detailing where you can buy it from, so you guys can all get out there & keep supporting the Cancer Society - and at the same time get a really cool book, filled with tons of images from wonderful photographers across NZ.

Next step is off to the NZIPP conference in Wellington, which is taking place this week / weekend - should be awesome!! Gotta love the chance to catch up with colleagues, listen to some great speakers, see some beautiful prints in the Iris Awards print judging, and drink far too much.... coffee.

13th August - Pahoia School DVD shoot

How cool is Pahoia school???

Firstly, the fantastic teacher Mr. E. organized the Pahoia United rock band, which we've done two shoots for over the last year or two, they can be found if you delve back into the blog archives....

(as an afterthought - who wants to delve when you can just click links - here you go... First shoot .... and Second Shoot)

This time, instead of doing an end of year production, the school has decided to make a film - in the epic style of Lord of the Rings.

Now, as you know from the rock band, Pahoia isn't the kind of school to do things by halves - and this is no exception! I'm really looking forward to seeing what the film looks like!

So on Wednesday, I went over for a shoot - getting some nice full length images of the main characters, which will be printed as life-size cardboard cutouts for the film's premiere in Term 4 - just like the real movie premieres!

Also, we took some more head / shoulders type shots, which we'll make up as a montage type thing to use as promo posters / DVD cover.

The school has even made their own green screen room for the film - so I shot in there (first time on green screen for me - was a cool experience!) to make it easy to cut the figures out so that I can overlay them onto another background.

Here's a little peek at some shots - apart from cropping out the bits of softboxes / reflectors sticking into the frame, these are all just straight out of camera - so still need a bit of Photoshop tweaking. But you get the idea, anyway!

Here's the stone which the film is centered around - on the cover it'll be really glowing and shining light back towards her...

And finally, a barbarian horde (it's hard to fit a horde into a little green screen room, let alone have them charging, so this one was shot outdoors!)

Cool aye!! This is just the beginning - I'm about to get stuck into the artwork soon - so will keep things updated.

Hamilton Portrait Photography extravaganza - Part 2!

Hi guys,

This has been a while coming (it's proving to be a busy week!) - but they're worth the wait!

So without further ado - here's shots from the Sunday sessions.

We kicked off the day with Nikki & Luke - who did some individual & couples portraits...

Then we met up with Steve and his gorgeous daughters...

After which we caught up with Lisa & Loto (who's wedding we'll be photographing later this year) and their son Reegan...

We then rushed off to catch Jono & David - we shot Jono's wedding (and Holly's) a while ago, and this time he was in a suit again!! ...

Then it was off to see Hayley & Darin for some couple's portraits...

And finally, we finished up the day with Nyssa & James - pretty much all their shots were taken after dark, so it was a great chance to get the flashes out & play around with the light...

And there you have it!!

Many, many photos + many people + very little downtime + no rain + smiles + happy = a fantastic weekend and some beautiful shots!

Thanks again to everyone that came along to work with us - we had a great time, and hope ya'll did too :)

Hamilton portrait photography extravaganza - part one!

Hey guys,

As you know, we're doing our portrait marathon this weekend... and today was the first day of shooting.

We got some fantastic shots, and worked with some awesome families & models to do so - thanks to everyone that gave up their time to come down and pose up a storm!

Here's a sneak peek of how the shots are looking... only a couple from each, coz it's late & I need to get some sleep so I can get up and do this over again tomorrow!!

We began the day with an individual session with the lovely Alex...

Followed by Liz, Paul, and their children...

Then caught up with Niki & Dave for some portraits....

And a family portrait with Hayden, Jess, and little Eliot...

It was then home for a quick lunch break, and then off to shoot trash the dress shots with Rach & Fraser... (love the late afternoon light here)....

And then we finished up with some night-time bridal portraits with the gorgeous Kerryn....

Awesome huh!

We'll keep updating the images on the blog (and on Facebook) as I edit them... and tomorrow we're off to shoot a whole lot more, so check back soon to see how that goes!

Family Portrait - Simon, Tracey, & Linkin - 2nd August

Hi guys,

This morning we caught up with Simon & Tracey (who's wedding we photographed a while back) and their adorable young man, for some family photos.

It took Linkin a while to get into the swing of things, and for the smiles to come out, but we got there in the end!!

Apparently, over the last few days he has started sticking his tongue out - which we saw heaps of today! I love the shot where he's totally intent on getting his hands on the camera lens - so cute!

Sara & Kevin's wedding photos - Sneak Peek! - 2nd August

Hi guys,

Today (well, technically yesterday - as it has now hit 3.30am!) we had the pleasure of photographing Sara & Kevin's wedding at 'St. Mary on the Hill' in Pokeno.

The grey skies that had been gathering over the last few days decided that today was the day for rain - but Sara & Kevin didn't let it phase them in the slightest... and neither did we!!

I love this shot of Kevin on the deck, checking the weather...

Then it was off to the church for the ceremony....

And afterwards, we ducked back inside for a few more shots - as it was so beautiful inside! I love the second one here, which Amber was lighting while I shot.

Then we headed off with the bridal party for some photos... starting off on the road outside Sara's parents house. The mist in the background looks great - really adding to the atmosphere of the images...

It was then time to exchange heels for gumboots - and a trek through the paddock to some cool old sheds out the back (you all know we love old sheds!).

Since the rain & overcast cloud made the daylight quite 'flat' - it was the perfect time to get our lights out and really have a play with lighting - which resulted in some gorgeous images!

The first one here is a "natural light" shot that Amber took while I was getting the light set up, and then followed by the "lit" version. Both are gorgeous, and both so different too!

Possibly the wind caught Sara's veil here.... or possibly it was conveniently flicked up by a groomsman...

The next two shots were against a cool grid of steel mesh up against a shed wall - the second one is shooting back through the mesh from the other side, I really like both.

The last three images here were shot in basically total darkness - the bridal party under the neat pepper tree in the paddock...

And then some against one final shed wall - for these ones I also put a flash inside the building, so it shone out through the window & made things a bit more interesting...

There you have it - you can do so much on a gloomy, rainy day - if you have such a fantastic couple & bridal party to work with!

Hey guys,

Well, over less than a 24 hour period we've filled up many of our available slots for the 8th / 9th August - at the moment we're looking at shooting non-stop from 10am > 7pm each day, with around 20 couples / families / individuals involved.

Good times!!

There are still a few limited spots available though...

We still need a few more people willing to do the "corporate" look - drag that shirt & tie out and come get some fun shots! Women especially - update your business card now!

Also - a few more individuals - particularly anyone between 17 - 24 years old for some fun "fashiony" style portraits.

Could also squeeze one more "Trash the Dress" in as well - if you're free earlyish on Sunday morning - remember, we do have a size 8-10 and a size 12 dress too - so you don't even need to be married, just keen to get some cool shots in a wedding dress!

Couples & families are all booked out now, unfortunately - had to be in quick!

Do keep an eye out on the blog / facebook page though, as we're looking to do a repeat performance in Auckland within the next month - so you might be able to catch us up there!

Casting call.... The Instant Wedding Photography "Grab a Seat"

Hey guys,

As you may have seen on our Facebook fan page, we've got some exciting new developments in the pipeline - totally rebranding the Instant Wedding Photography site and also launching another 2 new sites along with it for other areas of photography.

To help us get ready for this, we're looking for a whole heap of people that might be keen on getting some free photos.

As this stage, we're looking for...

Families

Couples (for "engagement" style portraits)

Single guys / girls for some modelly / fashiony portraits

Trash the Dress - either your own wedding dress, or if you're a size 8-10 we have a dress that will fit, and we also have another wedding dress that's a size 12 - so you can get someone else's dress mucky! Of course, also anyone that wants "TTD style" shots but doesn't want to get their dress dirty is also 100% welcome

Executive style portraits - if you have a shirt & tie / a business suit, we want you! These will mostly be "head & shoulders" type shots

Pretty much anything else you can suggest!

We'll be looking to hold a "photo marathon" on the weekend of 8th / 9th of August, (rain or shine) in Hamilton - so if you're interested, let us know & we can sort out a time that works.

It'll basically work as... you let us know you're keen, we'll give you a time & location for the day... you turn up, get some photos done, and then that's it.

We'll aim to structure it so there's no overlap time, so no waiting around, just arrive & get straight in there.

We'd probably need somewhere between 30 and 60 mins with each couple / individual / family / wedding couple.

We'll give you a disc of images in return for you agreeing to come & model for us, and obviously as this is to help build our portfolio, you'd need to be happy with us using a few of the shots on the site / brochures, etc.

Just a bit of fun - 19th July

Hi guys,

Today we caught up with a few of our NZIPP colleagues for a fun series of portrait shoots.

There were about 7 photographers all up, and we had a variety of models that we encounter in our day-to-day photography situations.

The plan was that we'd each share a little bit about an aspect of our shooting - whether it was posing, lighting, ways we interact with models, you name it.

It was such a fun & beneficial experience - there are some very talented photogs out there!

The day began with some young'uns - some great classic portraiture & lighting demonstrations by the very experienced (over 50 years in the industry) Bill Lindberg - but in the end I couldn't resist taking a grungy shot on a nearby wall... this one was a quick grab shot lit by Amber (holding a flash up off to camera left).

We then headed off to pick up our models - a wedding couple (or at least people posing to be a wedding couple), Holly our assistant, and also David & Sonya - who's wedding we shot a while ago now (and went on to become the 2008 Wedding of the Year on weddings.co.nz).

They had all been beautifully made-up by Holly's friend Morgan - who isn't a makeup artist but should be!

We headed out to a funky car graveyard....

And then back into the university, where we witnessed a very cool lighting demonstration!

Finally, it was off to catch up with David & Sonya - it was also my turn for a demonstration - so we played with a bit of off-camera flash, and some video light - getting the sky to go a nice electric blue from the difference in light colours.

By this stage everyone was pretty much ready to call it a day - after nearly 5 hours of shooting, so we farewelled the crew - and then took David & Sonya across the street, where Sonya had spied a bright red wall she liked the look of. Holly came along too - putting on her photographer's hat for the first time of the day.

By this stage, it was completely pitch black, so we had to play with the lighting setup to ensure we had some light catching the red wall, and then a nice light to really make David & Sonya "pop" out of the image.

Here's a selection of what we ended up with....

It was a really fantastic day - thanks so very much to our models for giving up their time to come along & pose for us in the blistering cold wind, and also to Morgan for her awesome work with the makeup.

Trash the Dress shoot with Holly

This afternoon, we went out and revisited the spot where we shot Paul & Michelle's Trash the Dress images, with our assistant Holly kindly agreeing to model for us - being on the other side of the camera for a change!

We also had the lovely Nicola Inglis along - fellow NZIPP member, and owner of Nicola Inglis Photography,
so be sure to check out her blog for the images she took as well!!

My main goal with this session was to play with a fancy new softbox I bought 2 days ago, and also to experiment with some more complex lighting setups (rather than fumble around with stuff we've never tried while shooting clients, we just waste the time of our friends & colleagues!!!)

So we picked up a $60 wedding dress off Trade Me, packed Nicola's car full of our ridiculous amounts of gear (it couldn't all fit into our car!) and headed off.

I've split the shots today into mine, and Amber's ones - as it's quite interesting to see what each of us was shooting - and I was stoked to see Amber setting up some of her own crazy lighting arrangements & pulling off some amazing images! Her photography has come a really long way.

Also a new look to the blog images as of today - I wanted them to display a bit bigger on the screen, and while a website upgrade is in the planning stages, a good quick fix was just to lose the black boxes around the images.

Second Shooting - Sharn & Billy's wedding

Today I had the opportunity to second shoot at Sharn & Billy's wedding with the fantastically talented Karyn Flett, from Photofever Photography.

It was a really cool experience - rather than being the one who is in charge & bossing people around, I got to step back a bit and just shoot what I saw. It was great to see how another photographer goes about the day, and works through the same setups as me, but from a different perspective - and I now have a few cool poses filed away in my little brain for a rainy day :)

It was super fun - and Sharn & Billy were such a laid back, relaxed couple - add to this some perfect late afternoon light & an amazing location (the hills above Hobbiton in Matamata) and you're guaranteed some cool shots!

So - here we go - a few pics from the wedding in the Shire. Be sure to check Karyn's blog soon for the really cool ones :)

Trash the dress - Paul & Michelle - 5th July

Hi guys,

On Saturday morning we awoke at the rather ungodly hour of 4.30am - crawled out of bed, threw our gear into the car, and by 5am we were on the road, driving through the heavy fog out to Whiritoa beach, on the Coromandel peninsula.

On arrival, we met up with the lovely Michelle & Paul - who's wedding we photographed back in May. They were out, ready to brave the cold, for hopefully a fantastic dawn photo shoot.

At this point, I must address the fact that the dawn shoot was entirely my idea. At 4.30am, Amber wasn't quite as enthusiastic - and I'm surprised Michelle & Paul showed the enthusiasm they did, considering they were the ones out there in their wedding gear!

Luckily, it wasn't too cold, and we struck it lucky with the weather - not only having no rain for the duration of the shoot, but also enough cloud in the sky to provide a fantastic red dawn.

Here's a few of the shots...

After this, we jumped into the cars & headed down to the Karangahake Gorge, where we had a play with some antiquated gold mining equipment - decaying cyanide tanks, all the usual stuff you play around in on your wedding day....

The old archways of the structure made for some great angles - and the remnants of the morning fog gave things a suitably mysterious feel.

All in all, it was an awesome shoot, and we had so much fun catching up with you guys again, to create some stunning images! Have a look at some of them....

Portrait photography - Hamilton, Auckland, and everywhere in between!

Hi guys,

Well, we've reached the end of the "wedding season" - and things are nearly all finished up on our end, we still have a few weddings to finish up the editing on, a few albums to finish, but on the whole - things are a little less hectic!

Which is great, because it means we can turn our attentions to things we really enjoy, but haven't had time for - like portraits!

A portrait shoot is a really fun experience - whether you do it individually, or as a couple, or as a family.

Here's a quick gallery I made up this afternoon with a selection of our portrait work

If you've never had your portraits done before, here's a little explanation of what to expect.

There are 3 main stages... the planning session, the photo shoot, and the viewing and ordering session.

For your planning session, you pop in to the studio and meet with us, and we can talk about what kind of photos you like, and what you're aiming to get out of the shoot. Everyone is different, and everyone has their own unique reasons for wanting to get some photos done - so this is a really important step - where we make sure the shoot will be tailored to you personally, rather than recycling the same concept for every shoot we do.

We can also discuss things like locations, times of day for the best light, any particular things you'd like to include - maybe your child's favourite toy, or your teenaged sons' skateboard - anything! We work out a good date for the photo shoot, and you pay your session fee (which is only $100).

The next step is the shoot itself. This is when we can really have fun, and experiment a little at the same time - coming up with some great images. Our main goal is to personally interact with you & make you feel really comfortable, as this will shine through in the images.

The shoot usually takes between 1 and 2 hours. Once we're finished, you head off home to enjoy the rest of the day, and we rush back to upload, back-up, and start editing your images.

The last (and most exciting) step in the process is the viewing & ordering session. Once we've edited a selection of images from the shoot, you come back into the studio for the presentation - where you get to see the beautiful artwork we have created. We sit down with you and help you decide which images you'd like to order, and what sizes will best suit the image - along with options such as printing on canvas, framing for prints, or making albums with your images.

You place your order, and once it's paid for the production process begins - with any finishing retouching being applied to the images, which are then sent off to the lab for printing & finishing.

We then give you a call once the finished images have arrived back to us, and are ready to be picked up!

In a nutshell, that's it! It's a really exciting process, and so special to have your own pieces of custom artwork to display in your home - featuring you or your family.

Over the winter, we'll also schedule in some shooting time in cities outside Hamilton, so if you're in Auckland, Tauranga, Rotorua, Taupo - or pretty much anywhere else... get in touch and ask us when we'll next be in your city to shoot!

20th June - My lovely wife

Today I surprised Amber by booking her in for a massage, facial, and makeup session - as a way of relaxing & celebrating the fact she survived wedding season, while also being a full-time teacher!

And what better way to have a weekend off than spending it taking more photos!! So we headed down to a spot with some lingering remains of autumn leaves, and Amber posed up a storm.

Mark & Bridget's Cassells Wedding Photographs - 14th June

Hi guys,

On Saturday we headed up to Cassells in Auckland to photograph Mark & Bridget's wedding.

They decided to do their bridal party photos beforehand - and so after their getting ready shots in separate locations, we headed down to Cornwall Park, where they saw each other for the first time near the band rotunda.

For anyone who believes that having photos prior to the ceremony means you miss out on that special "first-look" moment... I'm sure these next images will change your mind!

Just wonderful!!

We then headed all the way out to Bethell's Beach for some shots with the bridal party - I love the dark clouds over the headland - especially when the sun was falling on the sand dunes, it was a really lovely contrast.

The rain held off for us too - which was an extra bonus!

Afterwards, it was back to Cassells for the ceremony and reception.

We had a fantastic time with you both - thanks for being such enthusiastic models!!

Josh & Puhirangi's Tauranga Wedding Photographs - 8th June

Hi guys,

On Saturday we headed over to Tauranga to photographer Josh & Puhirangi's wedding.

It was a gorgeous day, and after their ceremony in Te Puke (which was led by Josh's parents - so lovely!) we headed back to the Mount Surf club, where they had a reception lunch.

Afterwards, we caught up with the bridal party for some photos, on the beach at the Mount, and then at a cool graffiti wall.

Well done to the bridal party, who managed to not look cold - even though the wind was absolutely freezing!

The light was perfect though - I love winter weddings!!! (or autumn, whatever season it is now). You get nice early sunsets & the chance to really work with the late afternoon light - so fun.

Quite a few images here today - I figure it's getting close to the end of our season (only one more to go) so need to stock up on good photos to keep all the blog stalkers amped!

Will be posting up more wedding photos / some personal stuff over the winter too - so don't go away.

Mark & Rebbeca's Woodlands wedding photos - 5th June

Today I had the pleasure of photographing Mark & Rebecca's wedding with Nicola Inglis - fellow NZIPP member and fantastic photographer, who came along to second shoot with me.

Mark & Becs had a laid back & relaxed approach to the day, which resulted in some gorgeous, relaxed images. The rain held off for us, and the lovely golden afternoon sunlight really enhanced the autumn colours in the trees - beautiful!!

Have a look at Nicola's blog for a few of her shots (she beat me to it this evening!!) - they're gorgeous. Looking forward to having a look at the rest of her images!

Congratulations Amber - another NZIPP Qualified Wedding Photographer!

Congratulations to my beautiful & talented wife - who has just heard that she has passed her NZIPP wedding "Q" submission - where she sent in an album of her work & had it judged by a panel of New Zealand's top wedding photographers.

So now Amber is also a qualified NZIPP wedding photographer - well done!!

So to all our clients out there - you now get two photographers that are both fully qualified in our own right, which is cool!!

Yay!!! Guess I must be shouting dinner tonight then :)
