Differential pressure transmitter construction

A differential pressure transmitter has three functional parts.

1) Direct Pressure sensing element (located in the lower housing).
The majority of industrial DP Transmitters are fitted with diaphragm as the pressure sensing element. This diaphragm is a mechanical device. It is placed in between the two pressure inlet ports. The diaphragm will be deflected by the applied pressure.

This is clarified in Fig-7. This deflection is converted into an electrical signal. This is normally done by the sensors. The commonly used sensors are (a) Strain Gauge (b) Differential Capacitance (c) Vibrating wire. The sensor output is proportional to the applied pressure.

2) Electronic Unit: The electrical signal generated at the lower chamber by the sensor is in the range of milli-volt only.
This signal is to be amplified to 0-5V or 0-10V range or is to be converted to 4-20mA for onward transmission to a remote instrument. This upper housing is the Transmitter portion of the DP Transmitter which houses the Electronic Unit. See Fig-7 for further clarifications.

3) 2-Wire 4-20mA Current Transmitter:
A DC output current is generated which is directly proportional to the pressure range of the Differential Pressure Transmitter. The lower range is 4mA, and the upper range is 20mA. This controlled current output is not affected by load impedance variation and supply voltage fluctuations. This 4-20mA output is superimposed with digital communications of BRAIN or HART FSK protocol.

Industrial applications of Differential Pressure Transmitters

There are unlimited industrial applications of Differential Pressure Transmitters.
Oil and Gas flow metering in onshore, offshore and subsea applications.
Water and effluent treatment plants. It is largely used to monitor filters in these plants.
It is used to monitor Sprinkler Systems.
Remote sensing of Heating Systems for Steam or Hot Water.
Pressure drops across valves can be monitored.
Pump control monitoring.

Job Capsule:

The Chief Electrical Engineer is responsible for the technical oversight of instrumentation, communication, & power architectures of new Wireline & Perforating Services (WPS) products. He or she will conduct conceptual, preliminary, and detailed design reviews for these electrical designs following our internal product development process. Tuning of PID and Cascade loops

ONE OF the most common questions we get asked is, "I have a cascade loop, how do I tune it?” Typically, it is not the tuning of the PID loop that is an issue as much as it is a lack of understanding of what and how the cascade structure is designed to control a loop. The tuning of a cascade loop is quite simple as long as the concepts of the cascade loop are understood.

In order to understand this further, let us look at a common cascade loop application.

Figure1 shows a tank that is heated via a steam valve. The ultimate goal is to control the outlet temperature T1 via the steam valve. We can attach a standard PID controller to this loop to control the temperature as shown. For this example, two types, among many, of disturbances that can affect the process:

Inlet Disturbances – Fluctuations in the Infeed flow or Infeed temperature can cause disturbances to T1
Supply Flow Disturbance – Fluctuations in the steam supply pressure causes flow to fluctuate which cause a disturbance to T1

The PID can only be tuned as fast as the process will allow. There is a significant amount of time (both dead time and lag time) in the process. In controlling such process, the steam pressure changes which results in the reduction of steam flow, controller will not detect such pressure variation until it affects the temperature, this will take sometime, as it is a slow process. A common way to resolve this problem is to use a cascaded PID configuration as shown in Figure 2.

PID 1 can be referred to as the Master, Primary or Outer Loop.

PID 2 can be referred to as the Slave, Secondary, or Inner Loop.

Essentially what we have done is taken our process response and split it into two pieces – a fast piece (G2(s)) and a slower piece (G1(s)). Note that we still only have one control valve. Instead of manipulating steam valve directly for temperature control, the valve is now controlling the flow of the steam to the process from PID 2. The temperature controller (PID 1) now determines the desired amount of flow to control the temperature.

What does this do for our control? PID 2 can be tuned relatively fast and can respond to the flow disturbances. PID 2 will minimize any fluctuation disturbances in the steam supply. PID1 still controls temperature, and is tuned relative to the temperature process, which is slower. The benefit of using the cascade configuration is that any disturbances within the inner (fast) loop, can be corrected (by PID2), without waiting for it to show up in the temperature loop (PID1), so that better (tighter and faster) temperature control can be achieved. A disadvantage is that we now have 2 PIDs to tune instead of the one PID as in our original configuration.

What does this mean to our configuration of the PIDs? In looking at Figure 3, one of the things we notice is that the CO output of PID 1 is feed directly into the Setpoint of PID 2. PID 1 is dependent on PID 2 being in control in order to control the temperature. In our control logic, we may want to ensure that PID 1 is put to track mode if PID2 is in manual control. Also, it is important to stop PID1 to increase (or decrease) if PID2 saturates, otherwise it will cause controller windup. Hence it requires some efforts to implement cascade control correctly. Some controller manufacturers have a Cascade PID block that is designed to handle the coordination logic required to run the cascade correctly.

Let’s put all this information together. The simple answer to our question “I have a cascade loop, how do I tune it?” is:
The PID 2 must be tuned first before tuning can be done on PID 1. Often, a simple Proportional control is suffice
PID 2 needs to be in control (typically AUTO mode) when tuning PID 1

That’s it! One more point we should also make. We mentioned before that the inner loop (PID2) is faster than the outer loop (PID 1). This condition must be true. If the inner loop is not faster than the outer loop, then the cascade will not offer any significant improvement in the process.

In a distributed computing environment, distributed object communication realizes communication between distributed objects. The main role is to allow objects to access data and invoke methods on remote objects (objects residing in non-local memory space). Invoking a method on a remote object is known as remote method invocation or remote invocation, and is the object-oriented programming analog of a remote procedure call.

Class stubs and skeletons

The widely used approach on how to implement the communication channel is realized by using stubs and skeletons. They are generated objects whose structure and behavior depends on chosen communication protocol, but in general provide additional functionality that ensures reliable communication over the network.

In RMI, a stub (which is the bit on the client) is defined by the programmer as an interface. The rmic compiler uses this to create the class stub. The stub performs type checking. The skeleton is defined in a class which implements the interface stub.

When a caller wants to perform remote call on the called object, it delegates requests to its stub which initiates communication with the remote skeleton. Consequently, the stub passes caller arguments over the network to the server skeleton. The skeleton then passes received data to the called object, waits for a response and returns the result to the client stub. Note, there is no direct communication between the caller and the called object.

In more details, the communication consists of several steps:

caller calls a local procedure implemented by the stub

stub marshalls call type and in the input arguments into a request message

client stub sends the message over the network to the server and blocks the current execution thread

server skeleton receives the request message from the network

skeleton unpacks call type from the request message and looks up the procedure on the called object

skeleton unmarshalls procedure arguments

skeleton executes the procedure on the called object

called object performs a computation and returns the result

skeleton packs the output arguments into a response message

skeleton sends the message over the network back to the client

client stub receives the response message from the network

stub unpacks output arguments from the message

stub passes output arguments to the caller, releases execution thread and caller then continues in execution

The advantage of this architecture is that neither the caller nor the called object has to implement network related logic. This functionality, that ensures reliable communication channel over the network, has been moved to the stub and the skeleton layer.

Job Summary

AECOM is currently working on a number of tunnelling assignments in India, including:

Detailed design consultancy, 3-D monitoring and construction supervision for tunnels T3, T4, T5 & T6 in connection with construction of Sivok (West Bengal) to Rangpo (Sikkim) New Rail Link Project, India

Detailed design and construction supervision of tunnels T1, T12 to T27 in connection with Jiribam – Tupul New Railway Line Project in the State of Manipur, India.

These assignments encompass a total of 21 tunnels stretching over 130 kilometers and with 42 portals located in geotechnically challenging locations.

AECOM’s scope of work includes:

• Design of tunnels, including emergency escape arrangements and portal slopes

• Design support during construction

• Environmental impact and management planning

• Construction supervision, including 3-D monitoring

Both projects provide sustainable transport solutions to the hill communities and will rejuvenate the economic development and prosperity of the region.

AECOM is seeking a instrumentation engineer to be based at site location i.e, Manipur, India. The responsibilities of this role would include -

• Planning & design of Geotechnical instruments for Underground Stations/Tunnels.

• Providing input to the ongoing process of design and verification during construction.

• Compiles and reviews daily (and any additional) instrumentation monitoring reports prepared by the contractor for completeness and compliance with the Contract requirements and Construction Management Procedures (CMPs) requirements.

• Reviews and provides comments on into the contractor's submitted detailed Monitoring Plan, any subsequent modifications to the plan, and other instrumentation and monitoring-related submittals as required.

• Conducts surveillances of the work, monitors the implementation of the contractor's instrumentation monitoring program.

• Co-ordinate for Conducting DCPT, LCPT and SPT tests using geotool and finally interpreting the data and presenting it in the form of a report.

• Co-ordinate for grouting works such as TAM Grouting, JET grouting, PU Grouting etc. along the Tunnel Alignment for Soil Strengthening based on analysis report.

• Liaise with Client, General Consultant, Design Consultant and Tunnel Consultants in effective execution of Pre and Post Building Condition Survey, Instrumentation works, Bore well works, Repairing works and Grouting works.

Minimum Requirements

Graduate In civil/Instrumentation engineering

15+ years of total experience , out of which 10 years of experience in NATM tunnelling is mandatory

Preferred Qualifications Excellent communication skills

Deluge Valves are used in conditions that call for quick application of large volumes of water and, for that reason, are often integral components in fire protection systems. In this article, PIF explain how deluge valves work, what their advantages and disadvantages are, and where you can lay your hands on one.

What are Deluge Valves?

Deluge systems deliver large quantities of water, over a large area, in a relatively short period of time. They are commonly used in fixed fire protection systems whose pipe system is empty until the deluge valve distributes pressurised water from open nozzles or sprinklers.

Deluge systems contain more components and equipment than wet pipe and dry systems. So for that matter they are more complex. Detection systems can include heat, smoke, ultraviolet (UV), or infrared (IR).

Applications for Deluge Valves

Deluge systems are used in conditions that require quick application of large volumes of water. They create a ‘buffer zone’ in hazardous areas or in areas where fires can spread rapidly. They can also be used to cool surfaces to prevent deformation or structural collapse. Or to protect tanks, transformers, or process lines from explosion.

Other examples include: tanks containing combustible solutions; equipment pits; storage or process areas containing substances with a low flash point; or product handling systems.

Position Summary

Instrumentation'

Supervise to see that Instrumentation contractor is executing the installation and testing activities as per the drawings, specifications and relevant codes/standards.
Study the drawings issued for construction in detail well in advance and identify if there is any mismatch between drawings and specifications / BOQ description / existing details drawings as well as any missing details and raise RFI to Project to get required details in time.
Review and approve the quality plan, Inspection & Test plan submitted by contractors and ensure contactor is executing the work and meeting the approved plans and procedures.
Witness tests carried out by Contractor and maintain records.
Actively participate in successful implementation of safety program as per contractual requirement.
Maintain joint record / document for the deviations from the drawings, specification, standards or dismantling quantities etc.
Verification and certification of quantities of RA Bills / Final bills submitted by the contractor.
Working out of quantities from the drawings.
Review and monitor the adequacy of the manpower and other resources deployed by the contractor for the execution of works as per the approved schedules and monitor the site activities as per approved schedule..
Graduate or Diploma Engineer in Instrumentation Engineering
Experience of working in projects in Oil Refineries / Petrochemical / Chemical / Pharmaceutical / FMCG / Buildings sector in instrumentation works.
Through understanding and knowledge of quality systems / procedures and HSE systems/procedures to be followed for instrumentation works.
Candidates from Consultancy background would be preferred. Alternatively experience with large EPC contractors.
Must be good in written and verbal communication.

Qualifications
Engineering Degree / Diploma in Electrical/ Power Engineering with 1 to 5 years working experience with reputed consultant / EPC contractor.
Working experience in execution of Electrical works for Chemical, Petro chemical, Refinery, food and pharma sectors.
Good written and verbal communication skills.
Good knowledge on IS, IEEE code requirement as well as standard Electrical engineering practices.
