2) Great Starter - This set came with everything to get you started, the CD was easy to fallow and the accessories are of great quality. The guitar bag however, felt like the straps wanted to tear when I put it on full, but didn't see where it might have teared.

Usually key-switches just switch between different fixed articulations or other pre-programmed sound varietes. In CHH Vol1 the keyswitches are used to switch between complex sets of presets with 21 adjustable parameters. 18 Key-Switch presets are available. 1) Hallelu Music and Leo - We received this flute within 7 - 10 days of ordering it. My daughter who is 10 loves it and we were very happy with the quality of the flute. One of the keys were not playing correctly after 7 months and I contacted them and they immediately responded back to me to send it to them. Once they received it, they fixed it immediately. Leo even called me to let me know it had been fixed and he was mailing it back to me. I would highly recommend this flute and any purchase from Hallelu Music. 2) Good fulte that makes financial sense. - Your school music instructor will invariably tell you to rent a "higher quality" instrument rather than buying a "cheap" instrument.

But IMHO that is terrible advice for a number of reasons:

1) First and foremost, this is a solidly built, quality instrument. It plays well and while it may not compare to a $700 Yamaha, it is much more than sufficient for the beginner to intermediate player. So don't believe the bias that "all reasonably priced instruments" are "cheap", because this one is NOT. (Again, not an expert, just my opinion).

2) The average rental of a $300 Yamaha beginner flute is approx $30/month. The average interest a beginner shows in playing the flute is about 9 months (one school year). After 3 to 4 months, this flute is PAID for and will still be of sufficient quality for another several years until the student is of a more intermediate skill level (perhaps even longer...who knows?).

3) If you rent a $300 flute and your kid sits on it, reenacts Starwars light saber fights, etc, then you just bought a $300 used rental (at full price)... and it probably is not reparable should those type of severe "accidents" occur. Kids are prone to use Flutes in all sorts of ways that are detrimental to the wallet of the person responsible for the rental. If your kid trashes this one, you're out about $120 and can still buy another NEW one and even then, you're STILL below the replacement cost of that rental.

4) Lets face it. The instrument quality is not the issue for a beginner. Unless your child is a prodigy, this instrument will not be the weak link in the child's playing:

The child's skill level will be.

Which is all the more reason to buy a flute that is skill level appropriate (and IMHO the flute is far beyond a beginner's skill level for at least the first 2 or 3 years. After that, you suck it up and buy the child a new flute proportionate to their VERIFIED commitment.

5) If you have multiple children, when/if one loses interest, you own the instrument for use by the next child... or foryour use should you ever get the urge. The convenience of having it at arms reach may be the difference between a child going back to it, a new child picking it up, or the parent fulfilling that age old desire to learn an instrument. A good rental will get returned when the interest fades (usually after 9 months at $30/month, with a total cost of $270) and then good luck ever playing it again when the mood strikes... you get the idea.

6) Based on the reviews of this particular flute, the seller seems to make a great effort in resolving any issues promptly and professionally. That was the clincher for me and although I never had an issue (arrived promptly and in perfect working condition), it is is good to know there is someone who takes pride in their products that is just an email away.

So that's my take on the whole rent vs. own thing. I hope this helps other in deciding what to do.

1) Great Broadway performances - I owned this on VHS and am pleased that it has made it to DVD. I hope it is the first of many releases of original Broadway performances of the 1950's and 1960's on DVD. Some performances are direct from their Broadway productions, while some are performed several years later. It runs about 56 minutes total and has extra features that provide background information on the musicals presented including creative credits, synospis, original cast, songs, Broadway production dates (including revivals), and when the film version was produced.

This is a must-have for any fan of Broadway musicals. I must say that my favorites are Gwen Verdon's "I'm a Brass Band" and Pearl Bailey's "Before the Parade Passes By", both performed while they were still in the Broadway show and with the respective choreography of Bob Fosse and Gower Champion. Seeing Bailey & cast, one can see how "Dolly" was revitalized with an all-black cast taking the show back to sold-out status. These preserved performances give us a mere glimpse into what true Broadway stars were like. The end of the DVD promises that a Volume 2 is in the works. Let's hope there are more to come.

2) Invaluable - Pretty much without exception, the original cast performances in Broadway musicals are matchless. However, the ephemeral nature of theatre makes it impossible to relive these performances over and over as we do with film, and often Hollywood translations missed out by hiring "bankable" Hollywood names. How lucky that Ed Sullivan led the way in featuring many of the original Broadway greats on his show. Of course, there are MANY more of these segments which I'd like to see make their way to DVD, but the segments presented here are superlative. The running list follows... Almost every one presents a Broadway star who was replaced with an inferior (and dubbed) Hollywood name in the film adaptation.

Bass Player magazine is written for serious musicians who play electric and acoustic bass. Each issue of Bass Player magazine features technique how-to articles, musician interviews and reviews of equipment, instructional videos, books and CDs.

1) A Great Bass Player's Resource - Bass Player features successful bass players every month. The subject matter is wide ranging. Towards the front of the magazine, there is a new gear section that gives a short description and thumbnail picture of new products such as effects pedals, speaker cabinets, strings, and what have you. Usually the magazine cover shot will be the main story where the magazine will give background information on a bass player and then interview him/her. One month you might find Paul McCartney, the next, Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers. In the interview, the reader gets insight into the mind of working successful musicians and how they shape musical bass standards with their vision. Towards the back of the magazine, there are in-depth reviews of three or four pieces of musical equipment; always included are a bass guitar, often a bass amp, and speakers, strings, and pedals.

As you get further to the back, there are many lessons geared towards teaching the aspiring bass player how to do certain techniques they might have heard on a recording, as well as technical exercises to improve technique. One month, you may have a guest columnist teaching you about how to hold your hand over the fretboard on an upright, and the next, you may get lessons on how to keep better tempo with the drummer. This section is very valuable and pertinent to anyone aspiring to improve their playing style. Peppered throughout the magazine are ads from all the industry manufacturers and retailers advertising a broad spectrum of supplies available, as well as internet links to those products. These ads themselves are educational as they give the musician a chance to compare product specifications and pricing. If I had any requests from this magazine, it would be--how about a small humor section or a cartoon?

This magazine is a must-have for both the seasoned professional and the aspiring newbie. I never miss an issue and I learn something every time I read a new Bass Player. I always look forward to the next issue with great enthusiasm. Do yourself a favor and subscribe to this one today! :-)

2) I have grown up on this mag!!! - If you are a bassist and you even need to read a review to figure out if this is the right mag for you, best get your head checked! I have subscribed to Bass Player since 1992 and will keep renewing my subcription until I am so old I have to have my assistant read me all the features by my craftmatic lounger. Forget Fox news, Bass Player is fair and balanced, covering everyone from the sad passing of NHOP (greatest upright player of all time) to all the standards like Jaco and Vic. Dont think that you little mall-core kids are not rep'd...all the nu-metal low enders are there as well, even though they suck the rust from under my fretwire. I have always respected this magazine and the writers seem like family...go get this now fool! word.

Glenn Gould: A State of Wonder - The Complete Goldberg Variations 1955 and 1981

Glenn Gould's recording debut in 1955 of Bach's Goldberg Variations took the world by storm. His decidedly un-Romantic view, absolute technical skill, startling lucidity, and right-on rhythmic changes, combined with his eccentricities--audible humming, sometimes outrageously fast tempi--made him an instantly legendary pianist and elucidated Bach's music in a whole new way. Gould's final recording, 26 years later, was also of the Goldbergs. It's a more relaxed, sometimes much slower, more inward reading (although still very much his own, complete with oddly ferocious attacks and accents), in which he offers repeats of the first half of 15 of the Variations. Both performances are glorious, each in its own way, and this luxurious new set of three CDs is entertaining, a joy to hear, and revelatory; it belongs in any music lover's collection. The third CD is devoted to outtakes and chatter from recording sessions. At one point, Gould improvises "God Save the King" and exhibits how it turns into "The Star-Spangled Banner." And a long interview with critic Tim Page offers great insight into Gould's weird humor and unique outlook. A must-have collection. --Robert Levine

Studio Outtakes from the 1955 Goldberg Variations Recording Session SOME OF THE CUSTOMER REVIEWS ABOUT THIS MUSIC [ SAMPLE ] 1) A GREAT CD SET TO HAVE - These two performances of the Goldberg Variations have been reissued so many times. But what makes this new reissue stand out is the bonus interview & outtakes of the 1955 recording sessions, plus all brand new remastered sound using Direct Stream Digital technology, with 2.83 MHz sampling frequency yielding high resolution results on standard CD. I was a little hesitant to purchase this set at first because I already own both versions of these piece. But after I bought and listened to it, I must say I don't regret it at all. In 1981, Gould recorded his latest thoughts on the Goldberg Variations. Some people expressed the opinion then that the digital Lp & CD sound was unkindly analytical, lacking timbre, causing the notes to appear disconnected from each other. Twenty years have passed since Gould's untimely death and to honour him and set the record straight, Sony Music returned to the analogue master tapes made at the same session. In the early 1980's, digital technology was in its infancy and technically imperfect. By contrast, analog technology had reached its peak. As a precaution of early digital imperfection, what many recording companies did, including Sony Music, was running two recording medium simultaneously side-by-side at the recording session and mark analog version as "safety master" in case there's anything wrong with the digital masters. From the technical notes in the booklet of this CD set, when Sony gave the green light to this "State of wonder" project, Sony A&R, reissue producer and two sound engineers as well as a project adviser, Mr. Tim page, made a Digital vs. Analog comparison and they found that the analog safety master has much superior sound that no one had ever heard before. Then the vote was unanimous to reissue the 1981 version using the analog safety master, instead of digital, for the first time after 21 years it was recorded. This analog safety master was unedited, untouched, so they had to acquire the original score marked by Glenn Gould and original records producer, then they edited the tapes to exactly duplicate the sequences chosen for the original release by Glenn himself. The difference of sound quality is not superficial. Even untrained ears can notice it. Now, there are the sonorities so painfully absent before, providing the necessary connection between the notes. This performance now sings. Well, so does Gould but that becomes an attraction, not a distraction. The third disc had Gould chatting with Tim Page about the two recordings with illustrations. Also, the never before released 1955 outtakes of Goldbergs' session. This package is no mere re-exploitation of existing recordings. It does honour to Glenn Gould. By Andrew Schafer on September 28, 2002 2) A wonder, a treasure - Two decades after his death, Glenn Gould's art remains undiminished in stature, as lustrous and diamond-hard as his carefully sculpted recorded interpretations. This CD brings together in one deluxe package his two recorded performances of Bach's Goldberg variations, the first of which shot him to immediate, lasting, and deserved prominence on the musical scene. Even now, close to five decades after its release, the clarity, brilliant technique and sheer energy Gould brings to Bach in this 1955 performance takes one's breath away. Historically accurate performance it is not, but something more important--a rendition that brings the music back to life, fresh and new. The later, valedictory recording, released just before Gould died of a stroke in 1982, makes a fascinating contrast, generally slower and more contemplative (with more repeats taken, though not all), and oddly demarcated inner voices and accentuations that nevertheless illuminate the complexities of Bach's music in a way perhaps no one has done before or since. The sound, remastered from analogue tapes made at the time of the original digital recording, is even better than in the original release There is a third disc that includes an "interview," carefully scripted, with Gould by the critic Tim Page. It is not surprising that someone as obsessed with the process of producing the perfect musical recording as Gould was would have wanted to exercise the same control over a verbal discussion as well! 1) This bad boy is a beast! - Had to work up to this mixer from the VR-3EX and was it worth it! The Full HD is awesome! Mixer for the most part does everything I need. Having some issues using the HDMI output, but the USB stream is working great. I did have to modify my Macbook Pros Out setting to get the audio to work, but now it rings like a bell. Working flawlessly with Ustream This item is an investment, and worth every penny.

1) What a great bridge! - I read reviews of this bridge on other sites and forums and decided to give it a try. I received it a couple of days before I was told to expect it. This bridge was purchased to replace the stock bridge on a 2000 fretless Mexican Jazz. I replaced the electronics (stacked pots for each pup), the pickups (Status Hyperactive) and have a Hipshot D-Tuner. It was getting an OK tone with LaBella white nylon-coated strings, but something was just lacking. I installed the bridge on Saturday, got it intonated and played a gig on Sunday morning. WHAT A DIFFERENCE in the tone!!! The sustain and "mwah" that I was missing has been found! Played through a Hartke Bass Attack DI straight into the board. This bass is all I want to play now. Not exactly like a Pedulla, but less than a total of $700 for the original bass and the upgrades, I will take it any day! BTW - I also play a '89 Carvin LB76 and a '98 Jerzy Drozd Prodigy VII LE pretty regularly. Can't wait to get this thing into the studio!!!

2) Probably the best bridge I've ever seen and tried - I fix and repair string instruments for almost 10 years now and I've been through all kinds of problems of intonation and buzzes. Things got pretty bad a few months ago when I dropped my bass tuning to C, along with thicker strings gauge. The low C string was buzzing and not giving me the bright sound I've ever squeezed out of my instrument.

Now, with Babicz Full Contact Bridge, not only my problem is solved but my sustain, intonation and feel on my strings does seems better than expected. Even using a pick, this thing works out to burst my bass up to my concept.
Guess that my 25 years old beast now will live for another 25 growling even better, thanks to this purchase.
Really glad about it!

1) Another Masterpiece From Disney - When it comes to Disney features, the music can make or break the movie. Many fans turned away entirely from Hercules because of the unexpected musical choices with the Gospel-style songs (although I am personally a fan), and to this day, I think that if Disney had made the music integrated into Tarzan the way they did the Broadway version, it would have ended up being a much bigger hit.

Well, Frozen is an absolute win in the musical category, and if you’re a fan of Broadway, then you will be very, very pleased.

The orchestral score from Christophe Beck is quite, quite lovely, and pulls you strongly in to the film right from the beginning. But as solid as the score is, the actual songs are where Frozen soars.

“Frozen Heart” starts the film off strong with a solid, sea-chanty-esque rhthym, “Do You Want to Build a Snowman?” establishes the relationship between the sisters and is heart-breakingly sweet and sad at the same time. “Reindeers Are Better Than People” is a cute little ditty featuring Jonathan Groff, and “Fixer Upper” is fun and energetic and will make great background music when walking through the Disney parks.

But there are three songs that everyone will be talking about.

“For the First Time in Forever” (and its reprise) is the adult counter-point to “Do You Want to Build a Snowman?” and is absolutely essential to understanding who both Anna and Elsa are. It has a great build throughout, catchy lyrics, and really fun visuals. Think of it in the same vein as other Disney "I Want" Songs, and you won’t be far off at all.

“Love is an Open Door” is a really lovely love-song duet, and in a different film, could easily be the one that everyone will remember at the movie’s end. The opening and closing of doors is a recurring theme in Frozen, and when the song plays, it is easy to see how Anna can be swept away by her handsome prince.

Incidentally, although we’re past the point where this should be surprising, Kristin Bell has quite a lovely singing voice, and she’s really fun to listen to throughout.

But the breakout hit song of Frozen is, without question, “Let it Go.”

Anyone familiar with Idina Menzel’s career knows this, but that woman has an amazing voice, with a tone very unlike many others. She isn’t always technically perfect, but she is incredibly talented, and the imperfections in her voice are what allow it to bring so much emotion to what she sings. If you only know her from watching Glee, than this may surprise you. If you’re familiar with her from Rent, then you know she has the pipes, but you may not be prepared for her ability to reach in to your heart and twist. If you know Menzel from listening to Wicked, then you know what I’m talking about.

I was introduced to Idina Menzel’s singing when she performed “Defying Gravity” at the 2004 Tony Awards, and fell in love, rushing out to purchase the soundtrack. Although I love the entire show, “Defying Gravity” was my favorite feminine power ballad of all time, and remains a regular on my iPod.

2) The Best Disney Soundtrack For the First Time In, Well, FOREVER! - I was at the premiere of Disney's "Beauty and the Beast" in 1992. I remember the feeling that everything in Disney animation was about to change for the better and for a very long time. The combination of story, animation, and above all, song, was the best that had been seen in a film since the 1950's, during the Silver Age of Disney animation. What Alan Menken and Howard Ashman had hinted at in "The Little Mermaid" was given full, beautiful voice in the songs from "Beauty and the Beast," and I knew that a new Golden Age of Disney animation was on its way.

I had that same feeling when I saw "Frozen" a week ago. It is to the new generation of Disney films what "Beast" was to the Disney animated films of the 1990's: a wake up to everything that makes a "Disney" film a truly "Disney" film, and not a Pixar want-to-be. Not a Dreamworks pop-culture retread, but a film by the company that made the animated film a viable and living art form.

"Frozen" is simply THAT good of a film. And apart from spectacular animation, a heartfelt and beautiful story, and top-notch voice acting, what makes "Frozen" that good is the music.

A perfect combination of song and score, the music by Christophe Beck (instrumental score) and Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez (songs), bring to life the story of sisters Elsa and Anna, princesses of Arandelle. Elsa has the magical power to control and create snow and ice, and as the movie opens, they are best friends who enjoy playing with snow and snowmen in the ballrooms of the palace. When an accident happens that causes things to change, the sisters are torn apart and the story begins.

Using traditional Scandinavian instruments, vocal techniques (including "kluning," a type of shepherds call), and a Norwegian choir (the all-female Cantus, who feature prominently in the opening titles), Beck's score is far more than just incidental music. It's as integral to the story as Alan Menken's instrumental music has been for his Disney animated films.

The opening piece, "Vuelie," is a breathtaking choral piece that sets the tone for the icy, Scandinavian backdrop as Lebo M's famous Swahili chants at the beginning of "The Lion King. Written by Norwegian composer Frode Fjellheim and adapted by Beck, the song combines traditional "Saami yoiking" and a Danish hymn. It evokes a cold and wintry feel while helping set the tonal culture of the film before the segue into a more traditional opening number.

That number is "Frozen Heart," sung by a chorus of ice gatherers. As the men work cutting the ice, the very traditional-sounding song tells the power of the ice, the curse of the ice, and relationship that this culture has with the winter. While it is appreciated for its strength and power, it is recognized as destructive due to the way it freezes everything in its wake. Visually, it's a fun song as the ice cutters work swiftly to load their reindeer-drawn sledge with giant pieces of ice. A young boy, Kristoff, and his pet reindeer, Sven, attempt to help with comic results.

The next song, "Do You Want to Build a Snowman?" tells, through poignant lyrics and great performances by the young Anna and, eventually, the grown-up version, what Anna feels as she is shut away from her sister, who unbeknownst to her, has been asked by her parents to hide away her magical gift. As a result, Anna feels like Elsa has shut her out and grows up nearly alone. Once best friends with Elsa, she is now nearly on her own--and by the end of the song, as tragedy strikes, it is clear that she truly is. It's one of those great "showtune" style numbers that helps advance the storyline while also being a great song. It's sung beautifully by the young Anna (voiced by Agatha Lee Monn and Katie Lopez--the songwriters' daughter) and Kristin Bell as the grown-up Anna. By the last refrain, it's definitely a poignant moment.

"For the First Time in Forever" is what Howard Ashman called the "I Want" song in the film. At least, it's Anna's. Finally grown up, finally ready for her sister to be crowned queen, her life is about to change. All the loneliness and shuttered away feelings she's had growing up are finally over--the gates of the castle are about to open and she won't be lonely anymore. It's a great "production" number in the film with lots of great movement, character animation, and sweeping visuals. It's a great song. It's a great "Disney" song. It feels "right." And sung so winningly by Kristin Bell, it turns Anna into an even more engaging and endearing character. Halfway through the song she is joined by Idina Menzel as Elsa, and the former "Wicked" star brings her Elphaba intensity to her character.

It's not a surprise that Menzel can sing, and she does, perfectly and beautifully, as Elsa. The real surprise is TV actress Bell, whose vocal performance is as important to the character as Jodie Benson was to Ariel. Without Benson's youthful naivete shining through as Ariel, she might have come across as a far less sympathetic character. Bell is so good as Anna, so warm, so fun, so endearing, and--she is a fantastic singer. To hold her own against a powerhouse like Menzel is something. To make a song like "For the First Time in Forever" feel as classic as "Part of Your World" or "A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes" shows the power of a great song combined with a great performer.

The film boasts not one, but two great love songs, and "Love is an Open Door" is a contemporary, pop-sounding duet between Anna and Hans, the prince of a neighboring kingdom. It's a cute and fun number in the film (reminding me a bit of "Kiss the Girl" from "The Little Mermaid"), but it's lyrically quite inventive, melodically interesting. Again, it's sung wonderfully by Bell, whose clear and pure soprano is a great match with Santino Fontana, who sings Hans with great gusto.

By this point, the audience is wondering when Menzel, probably the best known performer in the cast, is going to let loose with her big power number. And in that, "Frozen" doesn't disappoint. "Let It Go" is a lock for the Best Original Song Oscar, with it's powerful manifesto of breaking free from constraints and finally being able to be oneself. What is amazing about "Let It Go" is that, while it could come across a bit bitter, in the film, it's an absolutely delightful moment. In this moment, finally allowed to be herself after years of concealing her true self, Elsa lets loose with her power and creates a stunning ice castle. She smiles for the first time since the beginning of the movie, and Menzel's vocal performance is one of joy--yes, the "cold never bothered me anyway," says Elsa, but it's not out of bitterness, but a realization that finally, for the first time, she can be who she was created to be. In a film full of great songs, this one is obviously a standout.

Jonathan Groff, a Broadway actor best known for "Spring Awakening," delivers a truly memorable performance as Kristoff, the now-grown up ice gatherer whose business has been stymied once Elsa unleashes her power on the kingdom. Although possessed of a beautiful singing voice, Groff only has one song in the film, the silly (and silly-sung) "Reindeer(s) are Better Than People," which is a cute, throwaway number intended to show the relationship between Kristoff and his best friend, the reindeer Sven. Groff sings for both characters (and speaks for them in several very funny conversations in the film). It's a cute song.

The next big production number in the show is sung by Josh Gad (Tony nominee for "The Book of Mormon"). "In Summer" is a paean to the warmest time of the year--sung with great love and gusto--and a lack of understanding--by snowman Olaf. A great sidekick in the history of Disney's great sidekicks (Dopey, Jiminy Cricket, Timon & Pubmbaa), Olaf is a hilariously naive but funny character, and his big song is full of puns and laughs. It's even funnier onscreen. Gad gives it all he's got with big, belting vibrato, and he makes what is a minor comedic song into a moment when my audience burst into applause.

There's a reprise of "For the First Time in Forever," sung by Bell and Menzel that feels like a number from countless other sung-through shows in that it is mostly dialogue sung by the two sisters as they try to decide what will happen next. It's Anna's efforts to try to get her sister to relate to her--to show that she understands what Elsa is going through. It's a beautiful moment, but it doesn't end well. While it works on the recording, this is one of those songs that really needs to be seen in context to be fully appreciated.

One last love song, "Fixer Upper" is sung by some well-meaning trolls to try and get Anna and Kristoff together. Without giving anything away, these trolls feel very protective of Kristoff and really want him to get together with Anna. A song that celebrates that everyone has troubles of their own--each of us is a "fixer upper" and love can really change that--it's a welcome relief in the film when it shows up. It's another more "pop" in sound, but it's quite enjoyable, and the payoff at the end is fantastic. While I wish it wasn't the last song in the film, it's a great number nonetheless. And the trolls, led by Maia Wilson, turn the song into a gospel-lite number that really soars by the end.

Over the credits, Demi Lovato's version of "Let It Go" plays. While Lovato does a great job, the song doesn't have half the power of Menzel's version.

Like it has since "The Little Mermaid," Disney once again hasn't put the songs in order of how they appear in the film, meaning you don't get to experience Beck's score interspersed with songs the way you actually would. Which is sad, because many people are going to miss some truly great film music.

Beck does a great job mixing melodies introduced in the Lopez' songs into the instrumental cues, but even better, he truly unleashes the spirit of Scandinavian culture in the score. Whether it's traditional instrumentation, vocal ensembles, or even local instruments, al the "folk" elements of the score bring extra life and an underpinning sense of drama and purpose to the story's events. The hymn sung by the choir at Elsa's coronation, "Heimr Arandalr," translates as "Homeworld Arandelle," and celebrates the history and culture of the world inside "Frozen." It's a beautiful piece, beautifully sung.

Each instrumental track is unique in its own way, and although I am primarily a fan of the pieces clearly influenced by Scandinavian culture, I am confident that Beck will continue to write and develop exciting music for Disney films. The instrumental pieces I most find perfect in stand-alone ways (unlike an action cue, like the wolf chase) are the adaptations from songs in the film. In this, he doesn't disappoint, giving us several outstanding pieces, including the "Epilogue," which brings the whole film together, including every song--even "Do You Want to Build a Snowman?"

The Deluxe edition includes a second disk of demo versions of the songs and cues in the film, as well as a complete collection of songs cut from the movie as it went through production. The Lopez' introductions to the cut songs help give context and understanding to what went into each song and why it was cut. Standouts of the songs cut from the film (and which will probably show up in the Broadway version someday) include "We Know Better," a wonderful "sister power" song and "More Than Just the Spare," which anyone with an older sibling will be able to relate to. Sung very nicely by the composers, the cut songs show the amount of work that goes into an animated film and how big the changes in the story might get.

Beck includes many of his demo recordings for the instrumental score and all of them are quite nice--even when the synthesized strings get a little annoying. He includes the score for the original teaser trailer for "Frozen" as well as "source" audio for the folk instruments used in the background during the coronation scene. These are great for purists.

Rounding out the physical CD is a track only version of Menzel's "Let It Go." It's the original orchestral track used in the film, and it's certain there will be preteen girls all over the world practicing for their moment to shine in another Christmas production. Sadly, you only get one of these tracks with the CD, but the instrumental tracks for the other big songs in the show are available for download via iTunes. For all future showtune princesses (and their parents.)

"The songs, by husband and wife team Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez, are uniformly excellent, and form a cohesive story that moves the film along, adds dimension and life to the characters, and helps the audience understand their hopes, dreams, and motivations. It’s the best collection of songs in one Disney film in the first time for, well, forever, and the composers deserve a multiplicity of awards both now and in the future for creating truly musical songs."

1) A Baby Fave - I'm not an expert on classical music, but I do know my 1 month old daughter absolutely loves this CD. It instantly soothes her and captures her attention like no other musical melodies we play for her. The first CD I tried with her was the one that comes in the free diaper bag of goodies from the hospital and that one did absolutely nothing for her. It made me doubt the whole classical craze. Then my hubby brought this one home. After a week of sitting unopened I popped it in and it worked like magic. The first track captivated her and when it gets to the part that sounds like birds chirping she grins from ear to ear. This CD keeps her interested until she drifts off to sleep. This has been a lifesaver for me since my daughter is one who hates to be put down. This has helped my arms and my cooking quite a bit :-). Anything that keeps her attention and allows me time to do a few things is a must have.

I am a 19 year old college student, and I use it personally for study music-it is really good background music without any of the distractions that usually arise from trying to listen to music and do homework at the same time. 1) Review By a Professional Musician and Teacher - I've had this piano for about 6 weeks now. I decided to wait to write the review, until I had some experience using it. So here goes.

As the title of my review states: I am a professional musician. I studied piano for 10+ years, had a 30-year career as a professional opera singer, and have played piano ALL my life. I have used my piano skills to accompany myself, learning roles, etc. and also as a private voice teacher. This is all by way of saying: I know pianos, and, I am most accustomed to a traditional acoustic piano. I recently moved back to CA from NYC, and was not in a position to buy a "regular" piano. After a great deal of research and reading NUMEROUS reviews, I settled upon purchase of this Yamaha Digital Piano. As someone who dearly misses the upright grand I played all my life, let me just say: I am THRILLED with this purchase.

Sound: Several reviews on Amazon are noting things such as: a lack of clarity in the lower range of the keys / imperfect action of the keys / imperfect sound here and there. If you are looking for a PERFECT Grand Piano sound - then you need to buy a Grand Piano, or spend many thousands of dollars on a Clavinova. If you are looking for a really FINE digital keyboard that can get as close as possible to that lovely and true acoustic sound produced by a grand piano - then this is the one. The sound is fabulous - as true and clear a Grand Piano sound as you are going to get in a digital keyboard. In my teaching I keep it pretty much always on the Grand Piano setting. One thing I'm REALLY liking about it is, in fact, the volume control. I have several students whose voices are not quite as developed or "loud", and the ability to calibrate the volume of the accompaniment is helping greatly in my instruction.

Action of the keys: Personally, I really LIKE the action of the keys. They feel properly-weighted and not terribly different from what I'm used to in an acoustic piano. Others on this site have made note of a mild clicking sound when one depresses and releases the keys. This IS present, but quite honestly, is nothing I really notice - at all. It is VERY mild, and does not bother me.

Pedals: Be aware: if comes with just one pedal that attaches via cord to the back of the piano. This functions as the damper (sustain) pedal. For my immediate purposes it's working fine, but I will definitely purchase the add-on, three-pedal unit. The single pedal, over time, will not be sufficient for my needs.

Set-up: I am a fairly strong, athletic woman, and I was able to get this up two flights of stairs, on my own. I set it up on my own as well, and set up was clear and straightforward. Just follow the instructions EXACTLY as indicated, and it will be very easy. It took me about a half-hour. HAVE AN ELECTRIC SCREWDRIVER ON HAND---it will make the set-up monumentally easier.

As others have said here as well: having the ability to utilize headphones, and play / practice, in a way that does not bother others, is invaluable. Lastly---the only thing I did NOT anticipate is the fact that the detachable music stand sits farther back on the console, than on a regular acoustic piano. Of course this makes sense - because there are so many digital settings. So just be aware of that one detail. I'm used to the music being right at the front. But this really is not a big deal.

If you're looking for a really GOOD, good quality and reliable keyboard that can give you the best possible sound, without breaking the bank, then I HIGHLY recommend this keyboard. Good luck and Happy Music Making!

2) As a longtime Yamaha owner/player/fan, this has a few very nice features that made me upgrade. - There are several other good reviews here that discuss a lot of the features of this new flagship model in Yamaha's Digital Piano lineup. I have been playing various models of these machines for 8 years. Previously my at-home model was a YPG-535. Also, at church I play a DGX 640 - the version immediately previous to this one.

(The main difference between the DGX-6xx series and YPG-5xx series being increased polyphony, memory and the Graded Hammer System (GHS) which mimics the "feel" of an acoustic instrument).

I have replaced my home YPG-535 with this DGX-650 to take advantage of the following NEW FEATURES.
(By the way, these are all improvements over the previous model, the DGX-640 too)

1. "Style Recommender" - a NEW FEATURE in this lineup, allows you to set a tempo, start playing a song and based on the rhythm you are playing, it will list a few likely "styles" that fit what you are playing. This is a nice time saving feature as you don't always want to scroll through 150+ styles, this can narrow down your options for you faster.

2. "Audio Recording" - another NEW FEATURE in this lineup. Previously, I would make a recording onboard then use a laptop PC with line-in to create an MP3 version. Now I can save the onboard recording as a WAV audio file to a flash drive, pop the flash drive into my computer, import the file into iTunes and it's there. (iTunes can convert WAV files to MP3 with just a click). This is a lot easier. No cables, no more additional software steps. Keyboard to flash drive to PC. Done. Love it.

3. "Speaker override" - The onboard speakers are only 6 watts but they are large and sound very nice. With all previous models though, the speakers cut out if you plugged in headphones (or in my case, at church, plugged the keyboard into our sound system). Then I have to turn around and set up a separate monitor to hear myself when the musicians are all playing. Now, you can set the speakers to stay on (and I can use them as a monitor while the keyboard is plugged into the sound system). Hmmmm....I may have see about upgrading our church model to the DGX-650 for this feature alone!!

4. "Auxiliary Input" - you can now plug your MP3 player into the keyboard and play along with it through the speakers. Frankly this is not something I expect to do much of, but it's nice to have it, right?

For me, upgrading from the YPG-535, I also gained a few other improvements such as more voices, more styles, more memory registration banks, additional memory for the onboard 6-track recorder, and up to 128-note polyphony. All these were present in the previous model - the DGX-640 which I play at church, but I didn't have them at home on my YPG-535. Now I do!

Over the past 10 years or so Yamaha has really done a nice job with these digital pianos. This is really the top of the line in this space. There are three models in this family. First, the basic YPG-235 ($250), then the YPG-535 ($500), now the DGX-650 ($800). From here you spend more money and you either have to move more towards a "real" piano (less voices, styles, etc.) - or towards a workstation/ arranger keyboard. Both cost more than these. These are an excellent value and great compromise.

As a longtime fan of these digital pianos but I have to admit there are some limitations on these too. For example, Yamahas have lots of great features and things but they are often only accessible through a layered menu system. This can make it difficult if you want to make a lot of changes very quickly. For instance...you only get 4 registration-buttons to set up your favorite settings. Now Yamaha does have 8 banks for those 4 buttons so theoretically you have 32 presets to work with. But you only have direct one-touch access to 4 at time. Otherwise you have to hit BANK, then whatever number - say 5, then the registration button. It's hard to do that in the middle of a song!). Keyboards with lots of buttons can be intimidating to look at - but they are great to have. Often there's nothing like direct-access to a setting or feature you need quickly!

But honestly, you will probably play this for a lot of years before you really bump up against these type of limitations. This might even be too much keyboard for some first-time or second-time buyers who might consider a YPG-535 and be able to save about $300. For those folks, the biggest difference to consider may be the lack of GHS. The YPG-535 sounds great and I have loved it - but it will not give you the tactile feedback the DGX-6xx models will. If the player wants a more authentic feel and the $300 won't break your bank go ahead and get this DGX-650 flagship model. You won't regret it. Also consider adding the LP7 3-pedal unit for another $75 or so. It looks great, feels great, and most importantly, it'll keep your pedal from sliding around all over the place!

1) Great first lap steel ! - I actually have three of these - a red one, a blue one, and a black one. The black one is the one pictured here, with 'chromed' hardware and inserts for the legs which are included with it (unlike the blue and red models). The pickup on the black one is hotter than the ones on the other two.

I bought the red one first. I bought it to learn to play lap steel ten years ago (I played guitar for many years and was familiar with slide guitar already, but this is a different animal). Then I bought the blue one to keep tuned to a different key, and hot-rodded the red one with a Seymour Duncan pickup. Then I bought this black one with the legs. I also bought a Carvin 8-string along the way, so now I have 10 years of experience playing lap steel. Now on to the review -

You will find this model of lap steel marketed under different names - Rogue, Artisan, etc; they are all the same instrument. As I wrote above, the black one has a hotter pickup than the others, but the hardware is essentially the same on all three. The bridge and saddles are like those on a Telecaster, and the tuners are the type found on slotted-head classical guitars. They have a shorter scale (21", IIRC) than most professional lap steels, but that isn't too big of a deal.

For the price, this is definitely an adequate instrument to learn on - you can't expect professional quality for $100 or less, can you? Here are a few "cons": The input is in exactly the wrong place for a right-handed player; you need to use a cable with a right-angle plug so that the plug is not in your way when you play. The nut is made of wood (it appears to be rosewood), and breaks easily (it also can be replaced easily). The pickup is very noisy. The inserts and legs are made of the cheapest metal possible and must be handled with great care or they will break in very short order.

All in all, these are pretty cool for a guitarist (or anyone else) to fool around with and learn to play lap steel. There are many many youtube videos and a wealth of information online to get you going. Buy yourself a decent steel like a Lap Dawg and you're good to go.

2) Can't beat it for the money ! - I was looking for a beginner lap steel guitar to learn on. This is not the highest quality of course, but it really is an excellent value. The strings it comes with need to be replaced with higher gauge quality strings immediately. The pickup works well, the carrying case and legs are sturdy enough, and it has been a great entry-level lap steel for sure. The tuning gears are net great - it's not easy to get it tuned accurately, but once you do, it stays in tune pretty well. I may look to replace those too. This is a product in which you really do get more than you pay for though. Amazingly affordable, and I've really enjoyed having it. I am an experienced guitar player and for me, this was well worth what I paid for it to have something inexpensive to learn a new style with. Definitely recommend it as long as you're willing to deal with the less-than-optimal tuning gears.

1) He likes it!! - Since I am an old lady, I can't properly review this drumhead. I bought it for my daughter's boyfriend who plays in a very heavy metal band. However, I am pleased to announce that he is very happy with it. He really likes the response to his double kick and the sound is definitely what he is looking for with his genre of music. We added a kickport to the bass and he's in heaven.

2) Finally, the kick sound I was looking for - I play on a church band, playing mostly Hillsong/Passion music.

I've been toying around with different heads and dampening methods for my kit, but the kick drum by far has been the most difficult to tinker with. With traditional heads, I tried several schemes with commercial dampening gear and also by taping things (a small towel, foam, even diapers) to the inside of my kick batter head -- which sort of did the trick, but the sound was still lacking. If I started pounding on the kick, it sounded too "rubbery" or "boing-y", which was a shame given the decent shells I have.

Putting a pillow inside and mic-ing the drum was an option I did not like--the pillow choked the sound too much and the kick did not sound lively. Sure you can add all the enhancement you want with a mic, but sitting behind the drums the kick seemed underpowered compared to the rest of the kit. The sound tech may like the pillow/mic option, but hey, it's gotta sound good to the guy playing the drums.

Then I tried the EMAD2 -- boy, I should have done it years ago. My kick now has the sound I've been trying to make. It's got a nicely defined, punchy "thud" to it with a short, controlled sustain while not losing the volume you'd expect from a 22-inch barrel. All this in a neat package that requires no additional dampening. It's an added bonus to be able to see the uncluttered insides of the kick drum.

The kit sounds much more balanced now, and it's a joy to hear the kick again and again. The bass player on the band used to complain that my kick sounded too mushy and was difficult to hear over the mix, but he noticed the improvements right away.

If you can, go give it a try at a local music store -- I'm pretty sure a decent store has a kit or two on display with this head on it (the choice of heads & tuning make a far greater difference in the overall sound than the material of the shells). You can compare it with other bass drums as well...
