Family holidays are usually treasured memories for both parents and children. Despite the inevitable horror stories, travel while children are young has some enormous benefits – in learning tolerance and respect for other cultures while they are still in their formative years; the potential for language learning while still young, and even practical positives like the fact that children under 2 generally fly internationally for free. However the potential for trouble is also compounded when there are children involved, with their smaller, fragile bodies and unpredictability. In the sage words of the Australian government, if you can’t afford family travel insurance, you can’t afford to travel. Here we look at how family travel insurance differs from regular singles or adult travel insurance, and the potential cost of not purchasing it.

Family travel insurance differs from the ordinary variety in that it must cover every member of your family, and is therefore often more expensive. You’ll find that most providers give a discount over what the applicable single rates would be – you won’t have to pay four times the single rate if there are four members of your family. You may feel discouraged when looking at your family travel insurance quote – simply remember to shop around and find the best price that meets your needs. Remember that the same disclosure obligations apply to every member of your family. You will need to let your travel insurance provider know about any pre-existing conditions for every member or your family, and anything that a reasonable person would expect to affect the likelihood of making an insurance claim.

If you are travelling with young children (under 8 years of age), having a family travel insurance policy that covers medical events is especially necessary. In most states children’s mandatory vaccinations are not completed until around age 8, and some of the diseases that have been ‘vaccinated away’ in Australia are still quite prevalent in less developed countries. These include tuberculosis, diphtheria, measles and polio. You will need to make sure that any medications that apply to your children are legal in the country you are visiting – even family travel insurance cannot cover all costs incurred by breaking the law (whether knowingly or unknowingly).

Even in countries that are considered relatively developed and safe, family travel insurance is a necessity to protect against crime. Parents who have their attention and hands occupied with caring for children are more vulnerable to pickpockets and petty thieves. It may not only be your clothing and cameras that are stolen – it may be important medication for your children that you don’t have the prescription for, or it may be your airline tickets.

If you are travelling with older children, make sure you are especially informed of local laws, and that they are also. Children can be subject to adult penalties for legal infringements from quite a young age in some countries, and some legal infringements may be activities that would be completely innocuous in Australia.

Backpackers are a very definite, and very different, breed of traveller! Hanging onto your trip by the skin of your teeth sometimes, working hard to make sure you can complete the next leg of your journey, often driving around foreign countries and doing all of the fun (and dangerous) activities that couples with kids just aren’t able to. Backpackers need it flexible, and they need it cheap. It makes sense that backpacker travel insurance is often separated from ordinary medical travel insurance or comprehensive policies. We examine what to look for in a good backpacker policy.

Pricing will be the determining factor for most backpackers in their choice of travel insurance. The cheapest is not necessarily the best – but if it provides cover for the essentials, then it is usually suitable for a backpacker trip. Current backpacker travel insurance pricing will depend on a huge number of factors, including:

Your age

The countries you are travelling to

How long your trip will take

Any additional coverage

All of these factors mean that it isn’t possible to give a useful pricing guide to backpacker travel insurance policies. Do be aware that the cheapest policies may make it quite difficult to claim, and in the most expensive ones the price is often related to the insurance ‘brand’. Better known insurers often charge more for no additional cover, simply based on the perception of value in paying more for a service. Look for companies that have been trading for a reasonable time, but aren’t necessarily household names. Don’t waste time clicking on 20 links that advertise ‘Travel insurance from $30′ – these policies are often domestic-only ones, provide cover for a single destination only, or have an enormous number of exclusions.

Backpackers should look for travel insurance policies that provide automatic coverage of most of the oddities that your travel plans may include. Working holidays are a good example; where some travel insurance agencies cover this automatically, it is listed as an optional extra at others. Much of the time, working overseas also means that you’ll be driving overseas (with shared transport from backpacker lodges to work destinations in many parts of the world). It is advisable to check that your work type is covered – some hazardous occupations, like mining, are covered only rarely. Make sure that your backpacker policy covers you for the most important things such as Medical expenses and brining you back to Australia if you are taken seriously ill or have a really bad accident.
Being a backpacker often means taking the road less travelled – with no responsibilities like children holding them back, backpackers can often be found at the ends of the Earth, testing the limits of civilisation. It is this kind of destination that your cover should provide for, covering you for events like acts of terrorism as well as for dangerous sports like bungee jumping, white water rafting and trekking at high altitudes.

Even if you don’t consider yourself a backpacker, the peculiarities of backpacker travel insurance policies mean that they may be the best choice for you.

Not every country in the world is lucky enough to have the public health-care system that Australia does. In some, reasonable-quality health care is available only for large upfront fees. Unfortunately, these are usually the same countries where the risk of becoming sick or being injured is more significant! Even the most basic travel insurance policies will cover you for some of the expenses incurred in getting emergency medical treatment, however, with the base option you may still be left out of pocket for various expenses. If you undertake legal action as a result of your injury or illness, or have any out-of-pocket expenses, for example, you could end up in thousands of dollars worth of debt. Medical travel insurance policies are a cheap way to cover any unexpected expense that is health-related. So what do they cover, and what are their limitations?

Medical travel insurance policies may not be offered by all insurers. Some choose to package additional benefits in with a mostly-medical offering, so that your hospital out-of-pocket and legal expenses are covered, along with natural catastrophe cover, for example. At almost all travel insurance agencies, though, you’ll find a mid-level cover that takes care of all, almost all, or all plus a little bit more, of your medical expenses while overseas.

A good medical travel insurance policy will include cover for occurrences like:

Medical, surgical and hospital emergency treatment

Emergency dental treatment

Legal advice and expenses incurred in civil health-related suits

Abandonment of trip for medical reasons

Accidental death or total disability

Cancellation and curtailment of your trip for medical reasons

Hospital out-of-pocket expenses

Many people don’t realise that medical travel insurance policies will not cover you for expenses that you plan to incur overseas. This is especially important for the increasing number of medical tourists having cosmetic and even necessary surgery done in other countries. Unfortunately you can’t simply take out a travel insurance policy and have them pay the cost of your work! In many cases, if you have any emergencies that are related to planned medical treatment, these emergencies are not covered either. This is because you are seen to be engaging in excessively risky practices. Most good insurers have to turn down these types of claims in order to keep premiums affordably low for others.

You will also find that many travel insurers won’t cover you for emergency medical expenses incurred in doing adventure sports or pursuits like bungee jumping, white water rafting, caving, etc. The reasoning behind the exclusion is the same as for medical tourists, however some good insurers will allow these sorts of activities. You should check out their websites. Other common exclusions in medical travel insurance claims relating to pre-existing conditions. Make sure you understand the cover being offered by the insurance company and if you need cover for your condition make sure you have declared it when buying the policy – – all companies vary in the way they determine that something already existed.

Medical travel insurance only policies are an affordable way to get cover if the countries you are travelling to have low social risks, but reasonable health risks. They won’t cover you for things like public transport delays, missed flights, or having your personal effects stolen, but they take care of a huge chunk of the concern of travelling overseas, at affordable prices.

Travelling is an exciting, but an uncertain time. You aren’t quite sure what you’ll find when you get to your destination – there is only so much a dictionary and a guidebook can prepare you for. One of the most valuable ways that travellers have to help quell that feeling of uncertainty is by taking out a travel insurance policy. If you’re taking an extended trip overseas, making many stops, or have other unusual facets of your trip including driving and working, then comprehensive insurance is the safest route you can take. We look at what is covered under most comprehensive travel insurance policies, and what is not.

You should firstly be aware that not all travel insurers call their highest level cover a ‘comprehensive travel insurance’ policy. There is no policy out there that covers everything! Marketing and branding has led many to define their own terms, and you may find reference to policies named ‘Extra’, ‘Excel Plus’, or ‘Executive’, among others. The comprehensive policies are usually distinguishable by the higher levels of cover, and additional events covered.

The following events are ones that are commonly covered by all types of travel insurance, including comprehensive policies.

Cancellation and curtailment: Having to involuntarily cancel or curtail your trip

Emergency medical expenses

Personal liability

Missed departure / connection: Due to public transport failure or other factors beyond your control

Personal baggage

Personal money

You’ll generally also find benefits for health-event related expense, such as: accidental death or permanent disability benefits, and hospital out-of-pocket expenses in comprehensive policies. Some crime related events are covered by comprehensive travel insurance policies – although be aware that wide-scale events are often not covered by insurance. Check the section below for common exclusions to travel insurance policies. Comprehensive policies often cover hijacking, mugging, natural disasters and search/rescue expenses. Good policies will also cover you for some occurrences that could be seen to be your fault, including motor vehicle accidents..

Due to the nature of insurance, there are some events that even the best comprehensive travel insurance companies cannot cover. Fear of terrorism, or the collapse of an airline company, are usually not covered by your insurance. Additionally, if you are seen to be engaging in risky behaviour, you will likely not be covered for any adverse effects of that. For example, if you have an accident whilst under the influence of drugs or alcohol , travel insurance generally doesn’t cover that. Leaving your valuables or luggage unattended is another common claim excluded, when they are in a public place or a hire car. If you cancel your plans because of personal circumstances (such as a change in your financial situation, even if it is beyond your control), comprehensive travel insurance cannot cover that.

Comprehensive travel insurance is an excellent travel tool, and a great way to help you feel comfortable enough to fully relax overseas. In some destinations, and for some types of travelers, it is a must. It does have its limitations though – make sure you familiarize yourself with them to avoid disappointment.

Getting an online travel insurance quote could not be easier. These days everyone knows that shopping online has never been easier or safer so it is no wonder that shopping online has become the popular way to get what you want. Even better, shopping online allows you to access the companies that can provide the best deals. What you want to know is how to get a travel insurance quote online, how easy it is to do so, and why you might want to choose this method over your typical travel agent.

How Easy Is It To Get An Online Travel Insurance Quote?

Buying travel insurance online is simple. It is best to know what you need in a travel insurance policy ahead of time so that you can find the perfect policy for you. Even if you do not know exactly what policy you need then the right website can guide you to the right decision. It really is that easy.

The site that you will want to use will present you with a list of questions that will help you to determine your ideal policy. Even if you do not know all the essential questions then the right website will. You may be male or female, a couple or a group, a frequent traveller or someone who rarely travels. Whatever your needs, you can find a travel insurance policy to fill those needs, and you can do it all online.

Buying Online Travel Insurance Vs Buying From A Travel Agent

There was once a time when if you wanted to go on a trip then you would have to go to a travel agent. That was just how it was done. If this is the way you are accustomed to buying your insurance then maybe you think you should stick with it, but if you buy travel insurance from a travel agent then you may be getting more than you bargained for.

Travel agents are trying to make money. There is nothing wrong with this because anyone doing a job is trying to make money, but you need to understand what this could mean for you and the price of your travel insurance. Travel agents often have preferred suppliers of travel insurance so they try to steer you toward policies from their preferred suppliers. If a travel agent manages to get you to buy from their preferred supplier than you could be buying travel insurance at an inflated price. In fact, you could end up paying twice as much!

This is not a problem with an online travel insurance quote. When you buy your travel insurance online then you are not steered toward the most expensive policy. You are matched up with the level of insurance that is appropriate for you and your trip. Getting an online travel insurance quote allows you to find out just how affordable travel insurance can be before you buy.

Getting an online travel insurance quote could not be easier. You just have to answer a few quick questions and you will receive a quote on an insurance policy that fits you.

When you begin planning any trip your last thought is probably going to be how you will be able to evacuate in the case of a medical emergency. Nevertheless, medical evacuation insurance is a necessary component ofany overseas trip. You never know when you will have a medical emergency and need to be transported to suitable medical facilities.

What Is Medical Evacuation Insurance?

Medical evacuation insurance is a part of a travel insurance that protects you in the case of the scenario mentioned above. Not all locations that you may visit will have medical facilities that will be suited to treat all types of medical emergencies. Others may have proper medical facilities, but still these facilities may be some distance away. If something happens then you may not be in any shape to be transported to them by conventional means. This is what medical evacuation insurance is for.

When Would You Need Medical Evacuation Insurance?

You may think that medical evacuation insurance is only necessary for when you are travelling to remote parts of the world that completely lack medical facilities, but this is not the case. There are many situations in which you would need to be evacuated to a new location due to a medical emergency. Some have been touched upon, but there are more possible reasons why this might be necessary.

Even if there are medical facilities in the area where you will be, will they be able to treat any medical condition adequately? You cannot predict what might happen so you do not know exactly what level of medical care you will need. If you need a specialist then you may have to travel farther than if you have a more commonplace medical problem.

Another common holiday choice is often overlooked even though it is a prime example of a trip that requires medical evacuation insurance. Anyone who takes a cruise needs this coverage. Cruise ships are isolated from advanced medical care so if you need this care then you will have to be transported to it.

Why Does Your Coverage Have To Match Your Needs?

Your level of medical evacuation coverage has to match your needs because your needs will vary depending on your destination. Some places will never have you far from advanced medical facilities while others will not have you anywhere near suitable treatment facilities. You have to plan your coverage to match your travel plans.

Matching your medical evacuation insurance coverage to your needs helps you in two ways. First, it helps to ensure that you will have all the coverage that you need to afford the costs of transportation to appropriate medical care. Second, having only the level of coverage that you need helps you from overpaying. If you are going to be in relatively close proximity of medical care facilities then your medical evacuation insurance coverage should reflect this.

Medical evacuation insurance is, hopefully, coverage that you will never need. Still, if you do not have it then you will face troubles both when a medical emergency occurs and after when you try to figure out how to pay for medical transport bills later. In the end, medical evacuation insurance can get you the help you need no matter where you are.

Travel medical insurance may seem redundant. You know that you have health insurance so why would you need more just because you are going on a trip? The truth is that your current medical insurance probably will not be of much help when you travel. The costs of medical care will probably be the same or higher, but your usual coverage won’t be valid overseas.

What Is Medical Travel Insurance?

Travel medical insurance is medical coverage that will ensure that you are protected against the costs of medical care when you are abroad. You may have an accident or you may contract some sort of illness while you travel. Either situation necessitates medical care, and the one way to effectively plan to handle the costs of medical care while travelling is through travel medical insurance.

How Much Can Medical Care Really Cost?

To answer this question, you can begin by thinking about the cost of medical care where you live. The cost of medical care can be even higher when you are travelling abroad, especially to the US. You will also want to factor in the availability of quality medical care and the ease of travel in the location or locations that you will be visiting.

If you are not adjacent to appropriate medical facilities at all times or if transportation to these facilities is difficult then you will also need to factor in the cost of medical evacuation as a part of your medical bills. Depending on your condition, you may very well need a medical professional to accompany you in the medical transport vehicle which will add to the final sum. You may rack up some large medical bills before you even arrive at a proper medical facility. Add to this the possibility that you will need to stay for days or more of treatment and your exorbitantly high medical bills just keep growing.

What Else Do You Need To Know About Travel Medical Insurance?

You should know that your needs when it comes to travel medical insurance will vary depending on where you intend to go. Some locations will boast exceptional medical care facilities in the area where you will be staying while others will not. You may need to be covered for the costs incurred as you are evacuated from an area without adequate medical facilities to an area that can provide you with the care that you need.

You need a policy and a company that provides 24 hour assistance. Medical issues can arise any time of day so you need access to assistance and treatment at any time. You need to disclose any pre-existing medical conditions that you have too. Insurance companies may or may not cover pre-existing conditions with a basic policy so you should know and plan for this ahead of time.

Travel medical insurance is essential for any trip. In case you require medical care during your trip then you want to make sure that you can get it.

Everyone wants a stress free holiday. The problem is that anyone who has been through a couple overseas trips knows that many things seem to happen and most of them are not stress free. The possibility of problems is compounded when you travel during the holiday season. Luckily, travel insurance can help.

What Could Go Wrong?

While it may seem morbid to consider everything that could go wrong in the course of your travels, it is better to explore the possibilities now and be prepared than to be blindsided by them later. Of course, you do not want these things to happen, but that does not stop them from happening. Not preparing for potential problems can leave you wide open.

There are so many things that could go wrong while you travel that a sample of these difficulties will give you a good idea of the possibilities. You could become sick before or during your travels. Your luggage or personal belongings could be stolen. The weather could interfere with your travel plans.

You could have a medical emergency. You could have a loved one at home with an emergency, requiring you to head home at once. You could be in a car accident in a rental car with all the problems that can accompany that type of situation. In short, a lot can happen.

What Help Can Travel Insurance Provide?

Travel insurance can help to protect you from the financial fallout that could be the result of all these situations. Trip cancellation insurance can reimburse you for cancelled travel plans or for a holiday being cut short by any number of reasons including the health problems of a family member or even your own. Medical emergency travel insurance could help you to cover your medical expenses so that you do not need to worry about footing large medical bills if you experience medical problems while on holiday.

Medical evacuation insurance can help to cover the expenses of any necessary evacuation to a suitable medical facility. This could be necessary if you are in a location far from appropriate medical help either on land or while you are on a cruise. Medical transportation is not cheap. Different types of travel insurance can also help you recoup your losses if your luggage is stolen or if you are in a car accident.

Protecting Your Financial Future

These situations are problematic enough to experience during your holiday, but the financial repercussions of any one of these events could stay with you a lot longer. Medical expenses, car accidents, lost luggage, and cancelled travel plans can all cost you big. These possible scenarios can put a dampener on any holiday but having to sell your houseto pay them off is unthinkable. Travel insurance is how you protect yourself.

Travel insurance can help make your holiday stress free. You will have peace of mind even if nothing bad happens. If it does then at least you will know that you are protected.

You have a lot to think about if you are planning to study in the U.S. You have to sort all the travel arrangements for your journey, but the preparation only begins there. You need to apply for a J1 Student Visa. In addition to this, you will also need visa travel insurance that meets the strict requirements that go along with the J1 Visa. If you do not have this insurance or if this insurance does not meet the specified requirements then all your visa application will be rejected.

Take a Look at the Requirements For The J1 Student Visa

To begin with, to meet the requirements of the J1 visa with your travel insurance policy you will need to ensure that it matches or is better in the following areas:

medical benefits of at least $50,000 per accident or illness

repatriation of remains in the amount of $7,500

cover for expenses associated with the medical evacuation of the exchange visitor to his or her home country in the amount of $10,000

the deductible to be $500 or less per accident or illness.

Furthermore, the insurance company providing the policy must meet certain requirements. The company must possess an AM Best rating of A- or above, an Insurance Solvency International (ISI) rating of A- or above, a Standard and Poor’s Claims Paying Ability rating of A- or above, or a Weiss Research rating of B+ or above. It is imperative that any policy meet these standards to be acceptable according to the requirements of the J1 Visa.

The Benefits Of Some Policies

As an example, all insure4less policies not only meet but also exceed the above requirements. This will give you peace of mind as you select your insurance policy. There’s no need to worry about not having the appropriate coverage for the J1 Visa with a reliable insurance policy.

For starters, you can get up to $5,000,000 AUD under the medical expenses section of your policy to cover accidents or illnesses. Evacuation back to Australia is also included under the medical expenses section of your policy wording. As far as deductibles go, you can get an excess of as little $125 AUD per accident or illness with some travel insurance providers.

insure4less policies are underwritten at Lloyd’s of London. The current Insurer Financial Strength Ratings of the Lloyd’s market are an AM Best rating of A (Excellent), a Fitch Ratings mark of A+ (Strong), and a Standard and Poor’s rating of A+ (Strong).

You should know that travel insurance does not only cover you once your journey is underway. It can also cover expenses if you become ill before your trip. This means that you will not have to lose the cost of flights and other travel expenses if you are unable to go. You should get buy your travel insurance as soon as you buy your tickets to protect yourself from such problems. Keep in mind that some insurance companies will not cover cancellation if you purchase your policy within 7 days of departure. Don’t forget to read the Product Disclosure Statement carefully as this is your contract of insurance. Make sure it’s appropriate for you. You have done all this work to make sure that you will have adequate coverage. Make sure that you will be covered even if you can’t go.

You may think that having travel insurance is enough to promise you a stress free travel experience. As long as you have insurance you are covered, right? Unfortunately, the matter is more complicated than that. There are many circumstances and technicalities that can get in the way of filing a successful travel insurance claim. If you know what these potential roadblocks are ahead of time then you can avoid them and make filing a claim as smooth as possible.

Pre-Existing Conditions

Be aware that if you have a pre-existing medical condition such as a heart problem or cancer travel insurance may not cover you. It is becoming harder and harder to find an insurer that can provide cover for serious conditions. However, you may find that your policy automatically covers milder conditions such as asthma and diabetes. If in doubt, ask your intended travel insurer. Some travelers acknowledge that they won’t get cover for their condition and so are happy to accept that if something were to happen the Insurer would not pay up. Again, check with your travel insurance supplier because sometimes an Insurer won’t insure you at all if you have a condition!
. About 7% of denied travel insurance claims are because of pre-existing conditions that are excluded. Your claim will probably be declined if you become ill as a result of a condition.

Also be conscious of the fact that pre-xisting conditions of those close to you such as a relative or business partner might be excluded. If a loved one’s condition becomes a reason for you to cut your trip short or cancel it before you have left then that could pose a problem when you go to file that claim. Make sure you read the product disclosure statement carefully – most insurers these days don’t cover relatives over a certain age.

Take Responsibility For Your Belongings

If you leave your belongings unattended and they are stolen then you will run into problems with your claim. Your insurance company could assert that you did not take proper care to keep these items safe and this could interfere with your claim. Leaving valuable items on the beach unattended while you go for a swim is a prime example of this insufficient care. Make sure you take the proper steps to keep your valuables safe.

If you are victim of a theft then you need to report it immediately. Many travel insurance companies require a written police report within 24 hours of the theft. This documentation may be crucial to the success of your claim.

Also, keep records of your belongings. Keep proof of ownership such as receipts. You may wish to go so far as to take pictures of your expensive items. The likelihood that your claim will be successful is increased when you can provide proof that you were in possession of these items in the first place.

Be Prepared

Preparation is important. You want to know what to do ahead of time so that if something happens and you need to make a claim, then you know how to do it. Filing a claim is made much easier when you know what information to provide and you have the proper documentation on hand.

You also want to know if you will need to take actions within a certain time frame. As mentioned earlier, you may need a police report within 24 hours or you may need to contact your insurance company to make sure that medical treatment is covered by your policy before you receive that treatment. Following the proper protocol makes filing a successful travel insurance claim that much easier.

You need travel insurance for stress free travel. More than that, you need to know how to make filing a successful claim as easy as possible. These tips will help to make your next trip as stress free as possible.
