Because of this integration it only makes sense to begin incorporating technology into the classroom setting as well. Integrating technology into the classroom provides learning opportunities for both students and teachers.

Technology integration consists of more than simply teaching basic computer skills in a separate class; rather technology should be integrated across the curriculum in ways that deepen and enhance the learning process (Edutopia staff, 2008). Students should have the opportunity to learn from and interact with technology resources in conjunction with and in addition to their traditional classroom studies. The Edutopia Staff (2008) stated that successful technology integration should include these four key components of learning: active engagement, participation in groups, frequent interaction and feedback, and connection to real-world experts.

Technology should be used as a tool to extend and support students’ learning (Star, 2008). Students should have the opportunity to interact with a variety of technological resources. Technology resources include more than just a computer and software; it also includes: digital cameras, projectors, scanners, printers, videogames, digital card readers, audio recording and playing devices, e-readers, videos and audio books (Technology in kindergarten, n.d.).

Students often need to experience a lesson or objective numerous times and in a variety of ways in order to internalize the information or concept being taught (Technology in kindergarten, n.d.). Technology can be used as a motivational tool to encourage students to interact with the subject over and over again and in new and exciting ways to enhance a student’s learning potential (Technology in kindergarten, n.d.). The use of these technology resources can help to motivate and engage students in ways that traditional educational tools cannot (Technology in kindergarten, n.d.).

Teachers integrate technology resources into their classroom instruction and projects but they can also utilize technology in their professional classroom planning. Teachers are able to use technology to plan, research units and lesson plans and share ideas with colleagues (Technology in kindergarten, n.d.).

In conclusion, teachers should utilize the multitude of technological resources available and integrate them across all curriculum areas. Technology education can only be effective when integrated across all curriculum areas. Students should have experiences with various forms of technology within the classroom and learn to use technology as a tool to aid and extend their learning.

References:

Edutopia Staff.
