While products containing five ingredients, including adenosine and t-Flavanone, were described as worth trying but lacking scientific proof to be recommended, products containing cepharanthine, made from the root of a plant that is supposed to promote blood circulation, were classified as "not recommended because it has no scientific basis."

However, the study warned against grafting artificial hair made of chemical fibers as there have been numerous reports of infections and rejection reactions due to the treatment.

A new gene involved in hair growth was identified by the investigators from Columbia, Rockefeller and Stanford Universities in the April 15 issue of Nature. The researchers found that the gene, called APCDD1, which causes a progressive form of hair loss beginning in childhood (known as hereditary hypotrichosis simplex). The disease is caused by a phenomenon called hair follicle miniaturization -- the same key feature of male pattern baldness. When hair follicles go through this miniaturization process, they shrink or narrow, causing the thick hair on the head to be replaced by thin, fine hair, known as "peach fuzz."

"The identification of this gene underlying hereditary hypotrichosis simplex has afforded us an opportunity to gain insight into the process of hair follicle miniaturization, which is most commonly observed in male pattern hair loss or androgenetic alopecia," said Angela M. Christiano, Ph.D., professor of dermatology and genetics & development at Columbia University Medical Center, and lead author of the study. "It is important to note that while these two conditions share the same physiologic process, the gene we discovered for hereditary hypotrichosis does not explain the complex process of male pattern baldness."

The team made their discovery by analyzing genetic data from a few families from Pakistan and Italy with hereditary hypotrichosis simplex. They found a common mutation in the APCDD1 gene, which is located in a specific region on chromosome 18 that has been shown in previous studies to be implicated in other forms of hair loss, including androgenetic alopecia and alopecia areata, hinting at a broader role in hair follicle biology.

Importantly, the researchers found that APCDD1 inhibits a signaling pathway that has long been shown to control hair growth in mouse models, but has not been extensively linked to human hair growth. Laboratory researchers have targeted this pathway, known as the Wnt signaling pathway, to turn on or off hair growth in mice, but, until now, the pathway did not appear to be involved in human hair loss. This finding is significant because it provides evidence that hair growth patterns in humans and in mice are more similar than previously believed.

"We have at last made a connection between Wnt signaling and human hair disease that is highly significant," said Dr. Christiano. "We have years of beautiful data in our field about hair growth in mice, but this is the first inroad into showing that the same pathway is critical in human hair growth. This is the first mutation in a Wnt inhibitor that deregulates the pathway in a human hair disease."

"Furthermore, these findings suggest that manipulating the Wnt pathway may have an effect on hair follicle growth -- for the first time, in humans," said Dr. Christiano. "And unlike commonly available treatments for hair loss that involve blocking hormonal pathways, treatments involving the Wnt pathway would be non-hormonal, which may enable many more people suffering from hair loss to receive such therapies."

Dr. Christiano and her team are now working to understand the complex genetic causes of other forms of hair loss including alopecia areata, with the hope of eventually developing new, effective treatments for these conditions.

However, it needs more supportive researches and long trails for scientific data for the effect on human. Hair grooming practices, such as braids and weaves, as well as inflammation in the form of bacterial infection, may be contributing to the development of scarring hair loss in African American women, according to a report posted online that will appear in the August print issue of Archives of Dermatology, one of the JAMA/Archives journals.

"Central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia (CCCA) is a term coined by the North American Hair Research Society to describe a scarring hair loss, centered on the vertex of the scalp, that spreads peripherally," the authors write as background information in the article. "It is thought to be the most common pattern of scarring hair loss seen in African American women, yet so little is known about its true prevalence among them."

Angela Kyei, M.D., M.P.H., and colleagues at the Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, Ohio, conducted a study to investigate medical and environmental risk factors for CCCA. A total of 326 African American women answered questionnaires at two African American churches and a health fair in Cleveland. The researchers analyzed data on the study participants' demographics, family and medical history, hormonally driven conditions, and methods of hair grooming.

The study results suggest there is a high prevalence of central hair loss among African American women. "Advanced central hair loss with clinical signs of scarring was seen in 59 percent of these respondents and was interpreted as clinically consistent with CCCA," the authors report. "Diabetes mellitus type 2 was significantly higher in those with CCCA, as were bacterial scalp infections and hair styles associated with traction (e.g., from braids and weaves)."

The increase in type 2 diabetes among women with CCCA is in line with recent theory that cicatricial alopecia may be a manifestation of metabolic dysregulation.

"The results of this study suggest that hair grooming practices that cause traction, such as weaves and braids, may be contributing to the development of CCCA because these styles are more commonly used in those with the most severe central hair loss to increase hair style versatility while camouflaging hair loss," the authors write. "Given the fact that many African American women pay hundreds of dollars to have their hair braided and weaved, they often maintain these hair styles for weeks to months at a time to justify the money spent. The resulting prolonged traction can produce chronic folliculitis, which can eventually lead to scarring."
