Der Untergang

For all those who are playing the intellectual game, here is a warning. I am going to use stereotypes and I will generalise. Stereotypes are called just that for a reason and generalisation on basis of individual viewpoint sometimes may provide a sound basis for an argument.

I am a Finn. Despite having lived almost half of my life abroad, I know how a Finn thinks. A Finn thinks of the Greek crisis this way:

Greece is in deep trouble. Greeks don’t seem to care. They just fight between themselves and cannot agree on anything. Nothing much seems to have changed. Why should I give my money to guarantee loans to such a people? They will default and I will never get any of the money back. Let them reap what they sow.

A Dutchman will think pretty much the same way. A Swede thinks like this. A German would have thought that in times of distress, people unite – they don’t start petty electoral fights.

Let me put this simply. Any sensible person realises by now that Greece’s leading classes are failing. They are in fact failing completely. That leads us to only one conclusion: Der Untergang will follow unless something happens immediately. It is as Mrs Damanaki put it. Either we decide to fight, or we distance ourselves from Europe. It is ultimately Greece’s own choice, let’s not kid ourselves.

Until the end of the last week, I have been promoting the idea that Greece can come out of this crisis reinforced, changed and more powerful than it was before. I sincerely thought that Greek politicians would finally see the light. I don’t anymore.

Boys and girls, men and women, politicians and voters, this is it. You – we all – had enough of excuses of the past to give us some extra months of goodwill by the lenders. Seeing the disarray, populism, misinformation and stubbornness, I am not sure how we are going to pick up this fight.

In the past 18 months, no Government controlled company has been sold. No public services have been shut down or outsourced to private sector to provide. All we managed to do was to pick up the low-hanging fruit and raise taxes and cut salaries horizontally. No structural changes were made. Nothing genuinely different, fast and cheap apart from tobacco tax increase was even tried. And taking some not-so-bizarre ideas further, none has discussed long-term lease of islands or vast areas of land for development. Why not? Why would we sell the land, if we could rent it out?

Measures that the Government takes for liberalising or opening the markets are either not fully implemented or they are late. In addition, many of them are half-measures which protect some, create opportunities for others and close the doors for those who seem somehow foreign to the establishment. Even Greek companies have problems in investing in Greece. Foreign money is needed, but why would someone come here right now?

I could go on with the list, but it is futile. Everyone in Greece knows that Greece has failed. The trouble is that everyone outside starts to understand it too. And their patience is running out quickly. If I didn’t live in Greece, I would suggest that everyone stopped lending and let Greece fall. But we are doing just fine, aren’t we?

I spent two days at the Economist Round Table in Lagonissi this week and had a chance to talk to several high ranking civil servants, journalists, members of the Greek business community and representatives of the international institutions who oversee the MoU between the lending partners and Greece. What I could gather from the discussions can be summarised in the following sentence:

More needs to be done, fast, decisevely and effectively, if Greece wants to get out of this hole without too many further casualties.

As Prime Minister Papandreou tried to coin the situation in his speech on Tuesday evening, Greece is making a revolution of the self-evident. I say more: we need a revolution of common people. I have said this since the last 18 months at almost every occasion that I have discussed the crisis. We need a complete buy-in – and from what I can see around and above me, we don’t have it.

Co-inciding with the Economist Round Table, Kathimerini and Public Issue published their survey on Greeks’ attitudes towards the MoU between Greece, EC, ECB and IMF. If I were really nasty and hasty, by combining the information of the next three slides, I would conclude that Greeks are untrustworthy, selfish and ungrateful. But I will not say that. I just say that I have a real problem with the figures.

17 % of Greeks are in favour of enforcement of the measures of the MoU for full payment of Greece’s debt. 53 % want to negotiate a haircut or restructuring of the debt. 17 % want to just stop payments to lenders.

75 % have a negative view of the IMF. 20 % have a positive view.

52 % have a negative view of the ECB and 33 % have a positive opinion.

The situation changes a little bit, with the following detail: 60 % of the people in Greece don’t feel themselves informed about the role played by the IMF. So perhaps the lack of information is the driving force behind the negative views about those who now guarantee the Greek finances.

Last year I asked who should lead us out from the crisis. The outlook hasn’t got any better. The negative views of our leading politicians are in increase. And Antonios Samaras of New Democracy isn’t doing better (cf. the two charts at the end of the article). No wonder that people feel uninformed, left alone and without direction – the trust in the politicians ability to manage the economic crisis speaks for itself.

Fixing the problem is going to take time, but we need resolve from everyone. Let’s get to it. Let’s be open, frank and honest. Let’s accept that we have now done the “easy” part and that we need to get serious. And let’s follow the example of the French General Hubert Lyautey, who after the 1st World War asked his gardener to plant a particular type of tree. His gardener objected, saying that the species grew slowly and it would be 100 years before it matured. “In that case”, the general replied, “there is no time to lose. Plant it this afternoon!”

Disenchantment and disappointment disappear overnight?

The Finnish elections provided a landslide, a big bang, a grand slam, a grand fart or whatever one wants to call it in the Finnish political system. While on one hand I would like to believe that nothing much changed other than the pecking order, perhaps something will somewhere in the deeper layers of the polity. The fact that the True Finns were so successful and that everyone else lost, cannot go unnoticed in the months and years to come.

The results in terms of seats, as far as I am concerned, are clear. There is only one party that can be said to have won. I can see several problems in this outcome. First problem is that out of the four largest parties, only one is, in its core, really European. Even social democrats are currently hesitant about Finland’s role in the international arena. The True Finns campaigned on anti-EU messages and the Centre Party is pro-European only due to circumstances.

Second problem is that the coalition of the three first seems to be the only reasonable basis for the new Government. This means that the current pro-European stance of the Government will have to undergo a shift to accommodate to new reality.

If the shift to a less international and a less pro-EU approach is big enough and lasts at least the following four years, Helsinki will become more peripheral than it has been. This, from the perspective of a small country in a geographic periphery, sounds bad. And it sounds worse when one keeps in mind the fights, both internal and external, which were needed for the country to arrive to the point where geographical distance means little and it really can sit at the tables where the future is decided.

Many said that the True Finns’ success was driven by the European financial crisis. It certainly was one of the opportunities for the former small opposition party to pass its different message to potential voters. However, equally important is the disenchantment of the Finnish people in politics as it has been. For them, True Finns promised something different. Voters wanted people like themselves in the Parliament. They wanted to give the ruling classes a lesson. They were frustrated. And their anger made a difference in the results.

Their disenchantment with politics and disappointment with the system should now have disappeared. But let me bet. It has not and it will not. This election outcome will not make their Finland happen. Many have been led to believe that they can, alone, change everything. They cannot. This will be the biggest disappointment of this whole election: la grande illusion. Finland will not leave the EU, nor will it return to the Finnish markka. Even if the financial stability mechanisms may have to be partly renegotiated, Finland will not have a choice but to accept at least to some extent to take the risk of a lender. It’s time that someone said it, clearly.

True Finns’ victory is my loss – in order to run the country forward, we all must compromise more. I am disappointed, but I am not disenchanted. My disappointment will not last very long. In the end it will be the better ideas that prevail and the international Finland that will take the lead. It is unfortunate that we will have to put breaks on for a while, but perhaps that allows us to regroup and reorganise. As the results show, quite a few people in Finnish politics should reconsider their future in the helm. There aren’t many who have the legitimacy to pretend otherwise.

Once upon a time, there was a small country called Dimosio. Life in Dimosio was generally going quite ok. In Dimosio, there was a group of professionals, let’s call them magkes, working in one of the key sectors of the economy. The companies were led by men called lamogia. All of them had a special deal with the State of Dimosio. All work in this sector was done, more or less, as needed to be – with little inspiration, expensively, and always according to the tradition.

The economic situation of Dimosio had started to worsen, but despite all odds, some investors from abroad saw an opportunity. They wanted to enter the closed market ruled by the lamogia and put some new money down the line. They proposed more flexible solutions for the work. Their young, trained and enthousiastic employees were not just magkes but hard working ordinary men and women keen on taking learnings from abroad.

The new prices, new services, flexibility and approach to business seemed to excite the markets. However, the lamogia got upset – and with them the magkes. They didn’t seem to be interested in allowing anyone to come into their game. Instead of looking for alternative solutions, the lamogia and the magkes declared a strike.

(Picture may contain copyrights)

The Government of Dimosio didn’t know what to do. It felt only logical that the new investors should be allowed to enter the markets and that the lamogia and the magkes should revisit their business models. After all, in most other countries such changes had taken place years if not decades ago. But the Government felt powerless in front of the unified lamogia and magkes.

The new investors were wondering what was happening. Dimosio was paralysed by strikes – and not only in this particular sector. Others joined the cause. After all, the business of magkes was everybody’s business. Soon, after that it seemed as if Government couldn’t sort the situation with the lamogia and allow for free economy, the foreigners left.

Dimosio was not well. Its economy was sluggish and the fact that the foreigners started to drop out following the episodes caused by the lamogia and the magkes didn’t help. Several of the lamogia couldn’t keep their business running and many magkes became unemployed.

Since Dimosio was a welfare state, it had to pay some unemployment benefits to the unemployed magkes and the lamogia. Because of the strikes and non-realised investments, the work in this particular sector was more expensive than ever. Some unemployed magkes did also black work and therefore, with the unemployment benefits, those magkes got about the same money as before, but worked less and paid also less tax. Lamogia found new ways to make their money, just as they always had.

The end result was that the competitiveness of Dimosio got even worse. All sectors suffered as the employees realised that they too should get the same benefits as the magkes and the lamogia. Taxation was increased and costs for making business in Dimosio sky-rocketed.

Dimosio turned more and more introvert. Nobody seemed to remember those investors who wanted to come and inject some money. Nobody remembered those young to-be employees, who never got a chance. It is no use to be enthousiastic in Dimosio, and most of all, there’s no point in investing in Dimosio, they would have said, if someone listened to them.

The New No-Day?

On 28 October, the Greeks celebrate their No-Day, the non-agreement between the Greek and the Italian Governments in the eve of the Second World War. The No that the Greeks gave to the collaboration with the Italians led the country immediately to the war. Today the Greeks are voting for local and regional representatives in an election which in reality has turned to a vote of confidence to the current Government. And this vote could well end up being a No at many levels.

One of my very first bosses, Liz Spencer, a friend and a good mentor gave me a lesson on public policy way back in 1996. She told me that in developing better policies No is not an amendment. According to her, a No will not change policy, a No will not drive things forward. A No is just an empty effort to put breaks on a process, to protest or deny without proposing any alternatives. And, she told me, it doesn’t work.

In my life as a lobbyist, I have seen business, trade associations, NGOs and individuals sticking to the No when things have got difficult. In almost all cases, their resounding No has not helped, at best it didn’t matter. Often, it made their lives more difficult in the end. A No doesn’t work, because it leads nowhere, because for all of those who want to improve policies and people’s lives, it is the negation of improvement.

The polling stations are closing in a quarter of an hour. I am not going to predict any outcome. We will see that in a few hours. However, as I said in an interview in To Vima Newspaper about a week ago, Greeks must believe that things can change – and that they should change. This country is not destined to be at the bottom of the list of the 27 EU countries by any measurement.

Whatever the results will be, I sincerely hope that it will not turn out to be a No; not a No in the short term nor a No in the long term. No is not an amendment. The one who wins should keep that firmly in his mind.

Yesterday, I was at the Expedia Partners Summit and 2010 Awards event (disclaimer: Expedia is a client). Speaking to many of those who participated, and having learned to know what Marilena Zagana, Director of Market Management Greece and Turkey, thinks that the future brings for the Greek tourism, one thing is clear: online reservations from outside Greece are growing at a very fast pace.

Since 2006, Expedia has increased the number of travellers to Greece by 330% while the cost per hotel night has remained almost the same. The growth in visitors outside Athens has been even greater than in the capital area.

It’s interesting to note that, on basis of the presentation by Marilena and her team member, Christina Argyrou (Market Manager Greece), the travellers booking online tend to stay in Greece longer now than they used to. The average time spent by such a traveller in Athens has grown from two and a half days to four and a half and in the islands and outside Athens from just under four days to almost a week while the prices of overnight stays have stabilised.

At the same time, the travellers in Athens tend to book their holidays over three months in advance whereas the travel in other Greek destinations is booked closer to the travel date.

According to Marilena, online bookings and internet are a great opportunity for Greek tourism. Expedia’s 40 % year on year growth in the last couple of years and the prediction that online bookings in 2011 will grow by 36 % indicate that it is important for hotel owners to be present in this global market place.

One of the pioneers of the online hotel business in Greece, Spiros Georgiou of Airotel Group, told me that the untapped resources are still huge. We need more information, more education and tons of hard work. The rewards are there, but the work must start right now.

The Greek kiosk owners and smoking product sellers are under pressure. Since the beginning of the year, they claim, their turnover is down by third and profits by 2/3 (I wonder, if this still means that they are profitable). It is no wonder given the two increases in VAT and the drastic increases in tobacco excises. The latter, I think, makes perfect sense for many reasons, but we could discuss tobacco policies later.

What really strikes me is the way in which the sector is fighting back. In the last years, kiosks in Greece have become small supermarkets in the corners of the streets. They have fridges with fresh milk, yoghurt, soft drinks, water, freezers with ice cream, press stands and then, of course, the usual stuff that kiosks sell from cigarettes to chewing gum, from nuts to metro tickets.

(Copyright)

Now, it seems however kiosks have stopped evolving. They have gone on a campaign trail against to Government, but instead of targeting the Government, they shoot themselves.

They advertise that just like the dinosaurian 60 million years ago, the kiosks are now dying… Hold on a second, yes, there you go… kiosks are now dinosaurian – unable to renew themselves, unable to answer to change, to show that there innovation is possible even in this kind of age-old business. They are bound to die and disappear. I wonder who the smart advertising executive was that got this brilliantly bad idea.

You see, instead of making yourself look like a prehistoric relic in modern times and complaining about the excise taxes, the obligation to provide receipts upon purchase (sic!) and all other restrictions, why not use something a little bit less self-defeating as message?

It may be that the room for maneuver in kiosk business has become very small indeed. It may be that there will be lots of casualties and that we will not see kiosks every 100m or so when walking around the town. I have said this several times: in a Darwinian world, it’s not the strongest but the most adaptive to change that survives. Kiosks have shown that they can change. The fact that they are here, unlike in many other European countries, proves that the buying public, kiosk owners and authorities all have agreed (in practice that is) that kiosks are a business worth having around.

One of my first bosses said that no is not an amendment to Government proposals. I would hasten to add that any public communications campaign that likens you to well-known losers is no communications campaign.

R.E.S.P.E.C.T. - the second round

Since the story that I published last week, several colleagues and non-colleagues have shared their frustrations about the situation that professional services companies are facing in Greece. The problem goes far beyond the communications sector. It applies to all those who charge their creativity, professional intelligence and knowledge, service products and time, be it lawyers, business consultants, ICT advisers etc.

I don’t think it is useful to revert back to some events of the past week which showed exactly how difficult budgeting of professional services is – and how much unclear the process can be for an someone not familiar with the income and cost side of this business. Nor is it useful to think of restrictive market practices such as the lawyers have. Many of them would like to have the bar reference pricing gone as it limits competition.

What would be useful, however, is to think how we can better educate our own people, our clients and decision makers how we make or lose money. The better our business models are understood by those who buy our services (and us theirs likewise), the better the chances are that we are going to be able to make business that protects both sides’ interests and gives both the providers of services and the client better satisfaction over a long-term relationship. In this respect, professional services are like a real-life relationship. The better you know one, the more likely you are to make right choices.

(Copyright)

Below are some pointers to how we make money:

Hourly fees. We charge time – even when we give a client a project fee or a flat monthly retainer. Every level of seniority has a corresponding cost of time from a junior account executive to the Chairman of the company. These fees cover both the employment costs of the person, the rental and equipment, administrative costs (in most cases at least) and other professional third party costs that an office needs to be able to operate, such as lawyers, accountants etc. The fees also contain a small profit element.

Timesheets. We keep our time tracked by quarter of an hour. We don’t necessarily record every single hour that we think of our clients in the timesheets, but we should, because timesheets are not only a way to ensure accurate billing and profit/loss analysis for each account. When they are kept daily and can be found online, they also help in managing the workload of the whole agency.

Billable time. When we work for a client project, the time is marked for that client. In the end, however, it is the account director who decides if all the hours recorded can or should be billed – or get accounted for the profitability of the account.

Billing ratio. This is the percentage of time of any consultant that is billed to clients. It varies from the level of seniority so that the younger the professional, the more of his/her time should be billed. In practice, it varies from 80-90 % to 30-40 % of the top management of any agency who will spend time in management, business development, marketing etc. If you think that there are about 1,800 – 2,000 hours to be worked every year (grossly calculated), you get an idea how many hours a profitable consultant would be billing.

Costs. The biggest cost in professional services is the employment cost. Therefore, we should pay close attention to ensuring that we have stripped all the unnecessary other costs to be able to both pay fairly and attract stable and good staff. If we forget the cost and just guess the level of income needed, we either get ridiculous projects, unstable business and/or angry clients. In any of these cases, I don’t forecast a good future for the company doing it.

Now, let’s get to it and start doing the business as we should: on basis of a real economy where there are costs and income, profit and loss.

Offer and demand in a free market is tremendously good vehicle for ensuring that goods and services are provided at the right price, the one that clients and customers are willing to pay and which covers the costs and provides a reasonable margin of profit to the seller. However, in the crisis-struck Greece we have come to a point where the mechanism doesn’t work anymore. The outcomes are as bizarre as they are unfair.

If I want to buy a classic piece of design furniture, a Finnish online shop will bring it to my house in Athens at the same price as an Athens-based shop gives me during its annual extraordinary sale. Its official price is 30 % more expensive than that of the Finnish shop. If I want a cup of coffee in a beautiful cafe in the centre of the town, I can prepare to pay 6 euro for a cappuccino.

If however, someone wants communications services, they don’t much bother to pay. We will provide them for free, or almost. This is where we have come: a four-country communications programme with a most usual brief is now being sold at a price of 2,000 euro/month. I wonder who is to blame, the one who buys or the one who claims to be able to give full service at 500 euro/month at senior level.

In my 15 years in agencies from pure public affairs and lobbying to corporate and consumer communications, I have never seen such a self-defeating attitude as that which has settled in the communications agencies in Athens. I can hear some clients complaining about the service, I can hear some colleagues complaining about the clients. I can see that there is a lot to improve, but how do you, when we either make our own proposals below the cost or we accept briefs which we know cannot be fulfilled?

I could have called this article H.O.N.E.S.T.Y., but I am an optimist and take it for granted that we don’t fool our clients and tell them half-truths about what they can expect. I would therefore ask us to think in terms of healthy respect – for clients’ sake and for ourselves. What we do now is going to have a long-lasting impact on our profession. If we want to come out from this crisis our heads high, we better get our own practices in order, today.

Caretaker, undertaker - whatever

A Greek friend described his home as a country hijacked by communists. Another one said that it is under occupation like so many times in its history. I don’t know which definition I should use, but it deeply saddens me to see that something is fundamentally wrong in what we do here. When a handful of people, by striking illegally, can close down the biggest ferry port of the country at the summer tourist season, one can only wonder.

When the Greek Government has spent years convincing the European Commission that Piraeus Port fulfills the ISPS Code (i.a. access to the port is limited and the area is closed from public), it is bizarre when they tell that they cannot guarantee safety at the port. When the communists, who control the illegally striking unions, blame the companies for the chaos in the port, it seems to me that the intellectual suicide was committed already a while back. And finally, when the “striking” staff consists of handful 20-year old boys and girls in their shorts and t-shirts and some professional trade unionist, you know that there is no fire behind the smoke. The whole situation is pure dada which Dali would have described by saying: “There’s only one difference between madness and the situation we just saw. This is Greece.”

I am growingly worried that there will be renewed violence in the end of this road. The trade unionism is quickly marginalising itself when its irresponsibility is exposed. Those who work and see their income dropping will not look at these illegal strikes for much longer. They will act and the outcome will not be pretty.

Before the only thing that is left for any government is that of an undertaker, perhaps we should all try the roles of caretaker. It seems that our attitudes are too quickly moving towards whatever.

What is it with Greeks and science?

European Commission published a new Eurobarometer on European views of science and technology. Reading it is somewhat hard, but in case that you need a quick glance regarding the results, a good country by country summary is here.

For everyone who has lived in Greece for some time, it has become clear that Greeks, oddly enough, seem to like their public sector. At least many do – and many also mistrust private sector. That seems to apply to science as well. Only in Latvia do people think to an equal extent that private funding of science and technology limits our ability to understand things fully (65 % agree with the statement, 8 % tend to disagree or totally disagree).

Whereas this is not perhaps so strange, what is strange is that many Europeans, and even less Greeks, think that medical research results in better lives. Only 47 % of the Greeks think that science and technology are making our lives healthier. However, those who are more engaged with scientific issues seem to feel more positive about science and health than the average person – or person with little interest in science in general.

Whether or not science can solve all problems is an interesting question. Here we see some diametrically opposed views. Finland and France top the chart as countries where citizens least think that science indeed can solve all problems. In Greece more than one third thinks so. But 67 % of Greeks also believe that scientists, because of their knowledge, are dangerous.

Superstition is twice as common amongst Greeks and three times more common amongst Latvians than amongst Finns. Finns don’t think that certain numbers are especially lucky for some people, but over 40 % in Greece do. Furthermore, 58 % of Greeks now believe that we depend too much on science and not enough on faith. In the last five years, this opinion has become a lot more common here as in 2005, 44 % thought this way. With 66 % agreement, Cypriots are even more tempted to trust faith than Greeks who are 20 percentage points above the EU average.

I will avoid drawing any conclusions regarding these views and the everyday life phenomena in Greece. I suggest that you do this yourselves. What I would like to say though is that morals don’t go hand in hand with faith or superstition. When one asks if science and technology can sometimes damage people’s moral sense, it is not only Greeks and Cypriots who agree. It is also the French and the Finns who are amongst the most secular in the barometer.

Interview of Finance Minister Katainen: better and fairer regulation to convince global markets

I spent most of the weekend at my grandmother’s but on Saturday I went to the neighbouring town, Jyväskylä, to meet old friends at the Party Congress of the Finnish National Coalition Party (Kokoomus). The only really interesting thing on the agenda was the policy update by the re-elected chairman of the party, Jyrki Katainen. He is also the Finance Minister of Finland and chairs the European People’s Party’s Finance Minister Group.

His speech had a couple of underlining themes. One was an upfront attack against populism and cheap political talk. He made a commitment to remain honest – which in practice means that, in case that Kokoomus will win the next spring General Elections (as it seems right now), he will have to push through some difficult decisions as the next Prime Minister. Another key topic was the economic and financial crisis. Jyrki listed five key measures he wants his party to take in order to ensure that the country can avoid cutting from those who are in the weakest position:

Longer careers;

Revision of the public sector (counties and Government) services and overlaps;

Tax revision to promote ecologically sustainable business, innovation and economic growth;

Cut in general spending by Government; and

Tax increases.

The last two in the list will indeed come last, i.e. only after that the first three in the programme are implemented and no other option is available.

Later in the evening, I spoke with Jyrki and asked him to give a brief video comment on the impacts of the European financial crisis term for the stability of the region in the long term. As you can see from the video, his take is that there is an opportunity in these unstable and difficult days.

According to him, we need to show that Europe is capable of dealing with the current crisis. And in his opinion, this should be done i.a. by planning for better and fairer regulation, something that works for everyone and which is implemented and enforced by everyone. Time will show how this pans out in practice, but it seems to me that the person who coordinates the Ecofin positions of the largest European party isn’t going to give in.

Brand Greece

As opposed to Finland, Greece is a country where most things don’t work, but almost everything can be arranged (in Finland everything works, but nothing can be arranged). Is it therefore that the Brand Greece doesn't work, but it can be arranged? At least it has been discussed extensively over the last weeks particularly after the unfortunate events of May when three adults and an unborn child died in a fire set up by protestors.

I made my views on country branding quite clear in my post about Brand Finland way back in January. Now that the New Folders programme of Skai television covered the Greek brand image on its programme of Monday, I thought it would be good to update my reactions. Unfortunately, most of the input I have at this stage is in form of questions – too many issues are unanswered. And these questions might give a good idea as to what needs to be done.

However, first I feel compelled to start from the programme itself. I do not know where the editorial team went to find its interviewees, but there were only two real image makers interviewed in the bunch of seven people that got airtime. I can understand that SETE and the Minister need to be interviewed, but what on earth did Tulchan do in the programme where brand was discussed, aren’t they a financial PR firm? Apart from Simon Anholt (admittedly good, but a one-man-show) and Gavin Grant of B-M (thank goodness for that!), the rest was frankly disappointing. Where was Weber Shandwick or Fleishman-Hillard? Where was Edelman or Publicis? Where indeed was the rest of the top-5 of the global agencies with tested crisis management and Government PR teams? You cannot beauty-parade everyone in one single TV-show, but getting an idea what the real leaders of communications in this world think of the Greek situation would have been useful.

Where the Finns fail by being too organised and stereotypically slow, the Greeks fail by being stereotypically unorganised and hasty. The Greek tagline to foreign tourists and visitors has changed seven times in the last ten years. Either the Greek decision makers don’t know who and what Greece is and what it offers (possible) or they are just plain shortsighted (likely). The combination of both is probably the closest to the truth. When was the last time that there was a plan to pull the best of this country together to discuss and plan what Greece means? This isn’t a rhetoric question.

Something that is common with Greeks and Finns, however, is that both countries are introvert. Where is the foreign input and insight? But it is not only the blurred vision of one’s own navel that bothers me in the debate. Shouldn’t we tap into the existing global resources: for example, what is the engagement strategy for all philhellenes to join in, discuss, co-create the Brand Greece? There are millions of people with a soft spot for Greece. Once your own house is in order (i.e. Greeks know who and what they are), get those visitors, students, businessmen, artists, scientists and academics etc. together. Share the views, open up, discuss; get everyone to an agora for discussion and debate as it was in the past.

Finally, I would recommend doing what one really has to do: run the change programme through this country now that there is a real chance and communicate it effectively. It will do better for the image and brand of Greece than any other process which, no matter how important, will only polish the surface. The real work comes from inside. Now we are measuring if Greece has what it take to survive in the Darwinian world: it’s not the best who wins, but the fastest and best in adapting to a changed environment.

On Monday evening, Stathis Haikalis (my CEO), published his eBook on the topic. The event we organised in TAF was intentionally small scale but successful.

My own input to the book was limited to one chapter on changes in the way businesses operate and on whose business everyone’s business really is. At the event itself, I concentrated more on the way crisis management and communications are changing in an Internet-based society. My past blog comments on crisis management can be found here, here and here.

Below I have reproduced the story written by the Athens News Agency about the event. Unfortunately for all English speakers it is in Greek (as is the eBook apart from my article).

[edit 3 June]: Today's Independent features an interview of our London colleague, the Edelman Chief Content Officer and former BBC head of news, Richard Sambrook, who speaks about the change in journalism and public relations. It's definitely worth a read.

Thanks for all those who came! If you read this and want more details, don’t hesitate to be in touch:

I have used the Wikipedia’s money creation article as a tool to explain how inherently strange the fractional reserve system is. I’ve also used it to when discussing the challenges EU leaders have faced in addressing the public opinion in their countries. The money Greece gets is totally new, it’s coming out of nothing. It’s time we understand this, with its pros and cons.

Today, someone posted me a Google video which I think is useful for understanding the way our financial system works. The subtitles are in Finnish. Its real value to anyone is in the first 20 minutes or so.

Revolution of common people in action

Here is a true story about how we can make a difference.

My friend, let’s call him Mike, needed new sofa bed. He had checked various brands and their resellers and decided on a particular European product which was sold in Athens by three companies. He picked the one shop that appeared the cheapest. The price differential between the lowest official offer and the highest was €400 for the same model. He also knew from the past experience that the two shops with higher offer would not give him further reductions – or that these reductions would be minimal.

In the shop which he visited for the first time in his life, Mike wanted to try to lower the price further. The full price for the sofa bed VAT included was €1,700 – and Mike thought that if he paid the amount upfront in cash, the shop could be interested in negotiating price by offering a reduction equal to the 21 % VAT. After all, cash flow problems are well known in Athens these days.

The shop owner had a counter-offer. He could cut the price by 10 % by taking it off the VAT, not from the product price. However, the invoice would still need to include the full 21 % VAT. What the shop owner meant was that Mike would have to pay €1,530 for the sofabed, but the invoice would have been made so that the 21 % VAT was 187 euro [357 euro (21 % VAT of 1,700) minus €170 (the offered 10 % reduction)].

To make it plain and simple, Mike would have paid €1,530 against an invoice of €890.

Mike was left speechless. In order to get 10 % reduction, the shopkeeper was going to pocket 640 euro tax free and get even the little €187 VAT of the €890 invoice back. My friend told me that it took him five minutes to decide what to do. 170 euro is not nothing. It is a lot of money that buys many other things – but on the other hand, Mike needed the sofa bed, and in this shop it was the cheapest on the market.

Mike first eliminated the option of not buying. He then eliminated the option of cheating. He said that last year, he might have been more tempted to go the way of the reduced invoice, but not anymore. It was time to make a change by behaving differently. Mike chose the road of revolution of common people – he bought the sofa, at the requested price, with full invoice and VAT.

Certainly, Mike is in a happy position where he doesn’t have to worry too much about his 170 euro – or he could have gone elsewhere to bargain or choose another product. But for sure there’s a lesson in his behaviour for us all. We can choose differently. And we should. This revolution can be remade, every single day.
