Is there a Modern Solitary Confinement?

Every day I meet new people, I find that after a few minutes, the discussion wades towards what you do for a living. Once I let on that I am a Modern Design lover, I get one of two reactions. Sometimes, it is the look, as I see it registering, and I almost hear them thinking "Oh, where does that leave me?", and the second is sheer joy, and their confession that they love what I do. In these moments, I take them in, evaluating every aspects, in as little time as possible, no to be considered rude.

Working with interiors is really only a small part of loving Modern. Every rock in my wooded property is an art form, unique unto itself, and beautiful in it's setting, sometimes a setting I created.

Modern Art, Modern Clothes, Modern Food, Modern anything you can think of, I am there. Living, breathing, taking it all in, and not wanting my life to be anything but.....

Why does Modern get a pass?

Every day I observe the world around me, and ferret through all the items I see and use. I cannot help it, but I find myself sifting through every day common use items, and appreciating only those items I deem modern, contemporary or just unusual. "Can I like a vintage dresser?" "Can I fall in love with a hierloom piece older than me ?" I wonder. Yes I can, but only sometimes. It is amazing how a new set of qualification criteria is needed if an item does not qualify as modern to me. The grain of the wood had better be spectacular, the furniture had better be built using superior tongue and groove technique, veneers are almost out of the question. Should these same standards not exist when it comes to Modern furniture, I ask? Of course, but I become more forgiving because I love Modern. I convince myself that the exacting standards I am accustomed to, can be compromised to make some items of Modern furniture "more affordable". You really do get what you pay for!

Maybe I should just accept it, I am just a Modern Maven....

Interior Design | Manhattan!

Like all things wonderful, there are also horror stories, or at best, stories that give you cause for pause.

This story is about a foray into Manhattan Condo acquisition.

It started one sunny spring afternoon, while walking from my favorite Thai restaurant, near the Firehouse on 8^th Avenue and 46th. I have been going to the same Thai place for 14 years, and compare Thai food I have had worldwide with this place. After 9/11, I would walk past the neighboring fire house and read all the obituaries, and notes left for the fallen heroes and their families. It was depressing!!!

Anyway, I saw this sign go up in the middle of Time Square. “New construction - Condos for sale”. I did not have to do any research, rely on an appraiser, or really apply much common sense, to know that if I could buy in Time Square, I could be a landlord (and a well paid one), for life, or so I thought!

I vigorously wrote down the toll free number, made it back to my client’s place, and called to get my name on the list. Yes, I want the cheapest, the smallest, the best value.

A year goes by, I see the well muscled contractors put together the building at lightning speed, and wondered which of these guys were pouring my future floors!

Then the call came welcoming to come in to purchase a unit.

I was scheduled for 2 days later, and could not be squeezed in any sooner.

I arrived on time, armed with my guide price, check book, and dressed to the nines!

Then a funny thing happened;

A good-looking guy, who had been introduced in the waiting area about 10 minutes earlier as one of the developers, claimed that an emergency staff meeting was being held regarding pricing. All prices were to increase effective immediately. I am no talking about the guide pricing, no we were already $60,000 above that with today’s price. If I was interested in buying, I had to buy at the” yet to be published” next day’s price. I complained bitterly, accused the management company of wasting my time, wailed that an appointment earlier that day provided a cheaper price, and made my utter distaste known to all who cared to listen.

I was “pacified” with a promise that I would be the first one contacted once the revised prices were published.

Before I left, I surveyed the model units that were set up. “What joy!” I thought;

Zuma Tubs, Walnut floors, Kohler fixtures, Modern Light fixtures. It was a place made for meeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

My phone call came, at 10p.m. that night. The Condo had increased in price by $100,000. Yes, the market could bear it, but my pocket could not.

“$725,000 for a 1-Bedroom 600 square feet!. No way” I said.

All of a sudden, I remembered the thin walls, the cheap paint, and the inefficient HVAC system I had glossed over in my initial walk through.

I hung up, and crawled into bed, defeated and deflated in New Jersey!

Interior design, like the art form it is, has been described in many ways; interior design, interior decorating, interior space design, domicile gentrification, interior etc. Each term evokes the renewal of space, combining form and function, with the sole objective to delight the senses, create a sense of well-being, and appreciate different art forms that culminate into very good interior design.

Our work as interior designers draw upon many disciplines including environmental psychology, architecture, product design, and traditional decoration (aesthetics and cosmetics).

“In the modern world, human life experience is largely played out in interior spaces. We may love the out-of-doors for the sense of open air and sky, for the escape it offers from life inside enclosure, but the very joy of being outside reflects the reality that so much of life is spent inside.

Buildings and their interiors are planned to serve the purposes and styles of the times of their origins, but they exert their influence on the activities and lives that they house as long as they continue in use.

The study of interior design, its development and change through history is a useful way both to explore the past and to make sense of the spaces in which modern life is lived.

Professional interior designers are expected to study design history, to know the practices of the past in terms of "styles," and to know the names and the nature of the contributions of those individuals who generated the most interesting and influential approaches to design. “
