cabin fever

It's not even that cold here. No blizzard, we dodged Nemo. However, someone in this house was bored and needed a project, and it wasn't me.

I walk out of my room after lounging and reading this week's Indy, to find this... the entire dining room has been pushed to the middle because someone wanted to paint. We've been discussing colors, but I have been avoiding it pretty hard. This is one of the two biggest rooms in our house, one of three left to paint. He chose this one. Alright, you asked for it. Decision time.

This is what happens when you mess with my dining room. I go nuts, crazy with color. I chose Sherwin Williams - Sequin. It's a little yellow, a little green and might have been a split second decision. We'll see how it turns out.

yyyyyeeeeoooow. Looks like earwax. Did I make a mistake??

This was my reasoning, the living room will be Library Pewter, into the dining room which will be earwax, into the guest room which will be a dark jade color, that's still iffy. So, off he went to Sherwin Williams to buy some paint. What do I do? I google my selected paint color and see a bunch of terrrrrible rooms all painted ear wax yellow. Oh no, freaked out, called him, gallon had been purchased. We'll just have to see how it looks I guess. I did get a quart of Chinese Red which I'm pretty happy about, I swung by Ikea on the way home from an install Friday and picked up a Billy bookcase. My first real Ikea "hack," not sure what I'm hacking, but I've talked about it enough to try it out. O'verlays have been ordered!

Back to the dining room. Test patch painted. Starting to freak out a little bit more.

The night's darkness, chandelier on full blast. I was scared.

One wall is complete. I'm not panicking...or at least having an attack of panic, I'm trying to adjust and tell myself it'll dry darker. It'll be the mustard, weird green-yellow that I wanted it to be. Eeek. We finished painting, I got a headache from the fumes, we took the dogs for a looong walk in Umstead and I hoped I'd come home and my dining room would be this cool navy high gloss.

We get home and it's still yellow, but it did dry darker, like I (positive me, not pessimistic me) knew it would. So, I touched up the spots I missed and removed the painter's tape. Dimmed the lights and moved the furniture back into place.

Again with the ultra-hi tech camera (also known as iphone/instagram), but I must say I like my citron dining room. It's different and it fits with our stuff. Maybe I'm delusional from paint fumes, but I like it.

Weekend project successful and complete! Hope y'all had a good one too!

Have a useful project:
Going green is a valuable, positive thing to do. Similarly, many families now practice having useful projects whenever they can find some free time. The projects consist of repurposing furniture, recycling old items, reusing old clothes and other items lying around the house. These projects help family members bond and they become a very useful, “greater good“ activity.

Repurposing, recycling and reusing furniture and clothes is also very useful for budget control.

One very good project idea is drawing and writing on walls. This activity is good on a few levels. It saves you money on expensive paintings/wall decoration, it helps you bond with your partner and it gives your children an opportunity to express themselves creatively.

You are finally allowed to see my whole dining room. Here's what WE have done since the wedding.

1. ) MB sanded the table. Thank you MB. It'll get stained dark, haven't picked it yet.

2. ) We bought a set of 6 chairs at Seaboard Studio 123. Awesome.

3. ) We bought an antique Chinoiserie chandelier from Hunt & Gather. It has yet to be painted, I'm waiting until we paint the room. Unsure of the color.

4. ) Decluttering took place and it's now taking place in the red armoir. Sneaky.

I've decorated for Christmas on a budget. See boxwood wreath on mirror and bowl of bulbs from fried Christmas lights. That's all I've done so far in preparation for Christmas! More pictures to come as I get crafty with "found objects".

I love fur. Dog fur. My pets are my babies. Growing up we always had animals and being an only child, they were my siblings. A neighbor came over one day to find me playing hide and go seek with our golden retriever Buddy. I was hiding. Now that free time is playing hide and go seek with me, I really want to find it and get back to painting. I have painted a few dog portraits in the past and have been studying on how to capture the texture, variations in shade and color of one's beloved pet. A few of mine followed by a few that point and laugh at mine because they're so good.

My ADD is set to hyper-mode, I've burnt three bagels this morning trying to make breakfast. Ever feel like you're going in 9 million directions, I literally am going in that many at this moment. The need to organize and straighten comes over me when I feel like my life is too hectic. My house is currently in a state of disarray, so I will show you what I wish it looked like.

trays harness junk, it's their job. I use trays in the kitchen to bring together needs - olive oil, vinegar, s&p, sugar a few herbs, maybe a jar filled with most often used utensils.

this is not my tray, I wish it was, I'd probably smell dreamy all the time. But I do have a jewelry/perfume/receipts/spare buttons tray on my dresser. For some reason throwing everything onto a single, liftable surface is more organized than not. A place for everything and everything in its place?

I've got 14 to-do lists going at the moment. What do I do? I go out and buy a jar of Mod Podge and try to make a tray. Priorities.

I had a wallpaper sample from Schumacher, so I slapped it on a tray. Next time, I'll read the instructions on how to decopage? I think that's what I was doing.

The white globs are the un-dry Mod Podge. First try, C - for not painting the underside of the wallpaper sample.

Years and years and years ago, I was in a sorority. Years and years later, they asked me to revamp the same sorority house that I lived in when I was in college. I'm not that old, I haven't received any social security checks yet, but it was almost a decade ago. So, to say it was a little dated might be a slight understatement.

The Ikea Rast "dresser" is $34.99, I say dresser in "air quotes" because it's actually called a chest on Ikea's website and measures Width: 24 3/8 ", Depth: 11 3/4", Height: 27 1/2 ".

Breathing in fumes

When my golden rhino arrived from White Faux Taxidermy, I was for lack of a better word... stoked. I wouldn't call it an impulse purchase, there are no regrets. ~~On a necessity basis, I didn't need a gold rhinoceros~~ What!? yes I did.

And, this little fellow caused me to rummage through my "tool box" (also known as MB's shed) and find a can of gold spray paint I've been meaning to use. So, use it I did.

Lovely photography skills. This is 100% true life grit. UPS box, emptied of one rehearsal dinner cocktail dress, amidst gifts from this past weekend's bridal shower. I did NOT spray paint inside, I waited for them to (semi) dry before moving them. I have zip-zilch-nada patience.

Talk about instant gratification. MB goes to his bachelor party this weekend, wonder what else I can glamify while he's away!?

I happened to stroll by an Etsy shop, PlainAir, a few months ago. Toledo, Ohio artist Laura Hamilton has a very distinctive style. Her acrylic landscapes are impressionistic, colorful, almost "pixelized". In other words, I like them and think they're neat. She's quite expressive when it comes to seasons in Ohio, her study of color through landscapes are vividly bright and her color combinations are wonderfully intricate. Another visit to her shop today and she has even more fabulous paintings - if you haven't been, take a trip! And support Etsy artists because the earth without art is just eh, and so is your living room.

Titling this blog post was simple because it describes both Lindsay Cowles, abstract artist, and The Shirt by Rochelle Behrens. The creations are sophisticated, smart and wildly popular.

A friend introduced Lindsay Cowles to me because of my involvement in contemporary interior design. Her works are perfect for bringing color, depth and vibrancy to a space. Lindsay's work is so involved, yet loose and natural. Her captivating pieces really do "make" a room.

And another friend introduced me to The Shirt by Rochelle Behrens. She works with Rochelle Behrens, getting the word out, empowering women and giving them the freedom to look good while feeling good. If Oprah deemed it her favorite thing, you know it has to be good. The Shirt is a great looking blouse that secretly prevents wardrobe malfunctions.
