Is finding the cheapest calling card rate best?

A customer recently contacted us and said that they were concerned they could get a cheaper rate to call to their home country than we were currently offering. Of course, in todays world this will happen - you can now even call around the world for free with applications like Skype and Gizmo.

However, it is sometimes not always best to go for the very cheapest international calling card plan - and there are number of reason for doing this:

1. Hidden Charges - We often see that some calling cards will lure you with really attractive low calling rates, but will fail to show you the hidden charges such as weekly or even daily service charges, billing which is every 3 minutes, so if you call for just 1 minute, you are charged for 3, and much more.... You need to be careful and mindful of the charges that will be imposed on your account.

2. Call Quality - When cards offer low rates, this is often because they will use lower quality carriers to carry your call over to its final destination. This could even be done through VOIP or voice over IP technology, which basically means they are routing your call over the internet. This can sometimes mean the quality of your call will be diminished.

3. Added Features - Most users like the ability to be able to track their calls, their billing history, have access to speed dial functions and the ability to manage their account online. With cards that offer just low rates, you often do not get any of the extra features which make using an international calling card much easier.

International Sim Cards - How to Avoid Roaming Charges

When you travel abroad with your mobile phone, you will nearly always be hit with roaming charges by your carrier in your home country. These are often very high and depending on your carrier they will mount up very quickly and before you know it your bill is 10 times more than it usually is.

To avoid expensive international roaming charges you have a couple of options:

1 - Upgrade your package. Most carriers will offer an "international package" which you can add to your existing plan. This will generally be a monthly charge and then cheaper calls and texts when you are abroad. Of course, this will still be expensive but if you are a business traveler or really need to keep your current number and be accessible, this can be an option.

2 - Get a local sim card. If you have a GSM phone, then you can purchase a "pay-as-you-go" sim card in the country you will be visiting which will give you a local number, cheaper calls and usually free incoming calls (depending on the country). This option is good if you will be staying in one country when you are abroad.

3 - Get a global sim card. If you plan to be traveling around a few countries, then a global prepaid sim card could be your best option. Generally the rates will not be as cheap as the local sim card option but it offers the flexibility for you to use the card in a number of countries.

Mobile Phone Unlocking and Compatibility

If you are looking to travel abroad and want to purchase a sim card to avoid roaming charges, then you will most likely come across the question of:

1 - Is my phone compatible, and
2 - Is my phone unlocked

These two questions are answered pretty simply with a bit of research on your part, and some help and guidance from this post.

Is my phone compatible?
Most modern mobile phones run either tri or quad-band GSM which means that it will work in most countries around the world. If you have an older dual-band phone this may not work. Your best option is to check the manufacturers website or your mobile phone manual as it will tell you what GSM bands your phone can work on. Most of the world run on the GSM 900/1800Mhz bands, while the USA runs on GSM 850/1900Mhz bands - however you can check every country at:

In short - if you have bought a phone in the last 12 months it will most likely be fine!

Is my phone locked?
If you know your phone is GSM compatible with the country you are visiting, the next step is you need to find out if your phone is locked. If you have bought a mobile phone, most networks will lock the phone to their network - meaning that you cannot use this on any other network. This will obviously restrict you if you want to use a different sim card, however you have every right to unlock it and this is perfectly legal.

The first thing you need to do is to check if your phone is locked and the best way to do this is ask your friend (who is on a different network to you) if you can borrow their sim card for a minute and you will need to insert this into your phone. If your phone powers up with no problem your phone is unlocked, however if your phone displays a warning message like "invalid sim card" your phone is locked.

If your phone is locked you can unlock this by one of the two methods:
1 - Contact your network provider and ask for your phone unlock code. All mobile phone networks have to give this to you by law, however many may make it hard for you to get your code, or make you wait a long time for it. If that is the case you can opt for option 2.
2 - Do a google search for "mobile phone unlocking" which will come up with a number of websites that will offer mobile phone unlocking for a small fee. You can even enter your make and model of your phone to that search to get a more specific answer.

Hopefully this has give you all the information you need to make your sim card purchase and avoid roaming costs when abroad!

Mobile or Cell Phone Calling Card

The question we are always asked here at iCallAbroad.com is how can I lower the cost of international calls when I am calling from my cell or mobile phone? The answer is actually very easy and no matter where you are, whether in the USA or UK there are options that can help you lower you calling costs.

The first thing you have to consider is what type of contract are you on and so this post will detail the main contracts and what solutions there are for you:

USA Monthly Contract Phones
For those of you from the USA who are on a monthly mobile phone contract with one of the main carriers such as Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile, Cingular, etc... you will be paying a monthly fee for your phone and this will have inclusive minutes included in this monthly cost. This makes calling internationally very easy as you can sign up for the iCallAbroad USA International Calling Card and then dial the local access numbers for free (using your inclusive minutes) and all you pay is the low per minute rate on iCallAbroad USA. It really is that easy!

USA Prepaid Phones
If you are using a prepaid phone where you add credit to your phone as and when you need it, then there is still an option for you. Instead of having free inclusive minutes, on a prepaid phone you pay for all incoming and outgoing calls. So to make a call to our access numbers on iCallAbroad USA will cost you, aswell as being charged for the international portion of the call.

However, although this does not sound like a good option, you just need to compare how it all works out. To give you an example, most prepaid carriers will charge you up to $1.50 per minute to dial an international number direct. If you call our access number, which is a local number in the USA, it will cost in the region of $0.10 to $0.30 per minute depending on your prepaid plan - you then will be charged anything from $0.05 per minute by us for the international portion of the call.

So, it actually works out much cheaper to use iCallAbroad USA on a prepaid plan!

UK Monthly Contract Phones
Similar to USA monthly contract phones, most UK monthly contract users will be paying a monthly fee for their phone which will have inclusive minutes. With these inclusive minutes you then have two options; either you can call using our iCallAbroad UK landline service or iCallAbroad UK Mobile Service.

They differ in that if you have inclusive minutes you can use our landline service and just dial the access number for that destination and pay nothing else. Your inclusive minutes will cover the cost of the call - however I would advise you check your carrier to make sure that you can call that particular access number as some will not let you call those access numbers from your mobile or will charge you an extra premium for calling that number. If that is the case you would need to use our mobile service and simply top up your phone as per the site to make calls at great low rates!

UK Prepaid Phones
If you are on a prepaid contract then you would want to use our iCallAbroad UK Mobile Service to make great low cost calls. Simply top your phone up (as per the site) and your phone is then loaded with international credit, so all you need to do is dial the access number and make low per minute calls. You will be charged to call our access number, however when you compare this to simply dialling direct you will save money.

For example, if you called an international number from a UK prepaid phone it will cost you in the region of £1 or more per minute. When using our mobile service you will be charged for calling the access number (a UK access number) which will be around 10p to 20p per minute, depending on your prepaid tariff and then the low per minute rate on our website. So overal you could save up to 80% off international calls when using our UK Mobile Phone Calling Card.

Note - As with all these options, we always advise that you contact your mobile phone carrier to make sure you can call our access numbers and to find out the specific costs. In nearly all cases monthly contract customers can call our access numbers and these calls will be included in your inclusive minutes, so you will not pay anything extra. Prepaid customers will always pay to call our access numbers but as we explained above it makes sense to use our service and save money - though its best to check how much they will charge you to call our access numbers.

Low cost calls to India - India Calling Card

In the second part of our series on calling cards, we are going to concentrate on the subject of extra charges which includes things like connection charges, disconnection charges, monthly or weekly service fees, and really any other charge that is imposed on you apart from the per minute rate to call.

Of course, it goes without saying that your ideal type of international calling card is one that does not have any form of extra charge. You want to try and find a card that is as “clean” as possible - meaning no hidden charges of any type. However, there can be some instances where a calling solution that has extra charges might be the best option for you. Calling Card 101 - Rates

When looking for an international calling card you obviously want to get the most competitive and the cheapest rates possible - but sometimes this may not always be the best option. Why? Well its like anything that you purchase, cheap is sometimes good, but remember the age old saying "you get what you pay for" this can be said for international calling cards and phone card.

To give you an example, if you are calling the UK from the USA the rate you will expect to pay should be around then 3 to 5 cents region (depending on the service) however the lower end of that scale may use VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) technology which will not be as clear or as reliable. If you are paying something near 5 cent, generally this higher rate will be because a more dependable tier 1 carrier is being used so calls will not be dropped as often and the quality should be better.

If you see a rate lower than 3 cents to the UK, for example, I would be wary of hidden charges and rates - or they are using VOIP and the quality might not be that good.

So - in summary, lower rates are good - but when it comes to calling your family you might want to pay that bit extra to get a service that works, is clear and reliable!

FCC Advisory for Mexico Callers

The Federal Communications Commission in the USA has issued an advisory to all those calling from the USA to Mexico. The Mexican government has recently decided to allow Mexican telephone companies to charge more for connecting calls to wireless phones in Mexico from other countries. Read more on the advisory at:

As a result of this, effective the 4th November 2006, iCallAbroad USA has had to increase its mobile rates to 25 cents per minute from local access and 29 cents per minute by toll free access.
