Blackberry Roaming; How to Avoid HUGE Data Roaming Charges

Explaining Blackberry Roaming:

While roaming with your Blackberry device there is a continuous Push-Pull action being performed by RIM/Blackberry searching for new emails.

This action utilizes Data bandwidth on the Roaming Partner’s Network and this leads to constant charging for every pull and push action; this is a whole lot and leads to huge charges.

Avoiding HUGE data charges when roaming with a blackberry device:

For the cost conscious Subscriber I advise that they switch off Data Roaming completely or periodically on their BB device so as to AVOID “Bill shock”.

Option 1: Where the Subscriber has no plans to check emails while roaming at all.

The safest way to avoid these charges is to configure their BB devices so that when it's roaming the data services are disabled.

This prevents the Subscriber’s Mail application from accessing the data service and racking up huge bills without them even knowing its happening.

Here's how to configure your BB device so that it automatically turns of the data services when roaming.

1) From your Menu Screen select the Options icon. {Icon looks like a “screwdriver”}

2) Click on Mobile Network from the list.

3) Click on the Data Services option, and then activate the Off When Roaming command

Save your changes and your phone will automatically turn of the data services when you are roaming and prevent HUGE roaming Bills

Option 2: Where the subscriber would require some/limited email correspondence.

This is a somewhat cumbersome way to prevent HUGE data Roaming Bills but it would be required for someone who would like to check email periodically.

Here the Subscriber would be advised to have an alternate phone on which he/she would enjoy Voice/SMS roaming services
The subscriber would only put on their BB device periodically to check for emails.
They would be the need to switch SIMs between BB device and the alternate phone periodically or the Subscriber could get two SIM cards for roaming

How to Save Costs while Roaming

To save some cost while roaming you could choose to do any or a combination of the following;

1. Forward all incoming calls to your Voice mail, and at your convenience go through the messages and return the very important calls only, all other calls can be returned when you go back home.
If you do this you will save a lot on cost of incoming calls.
But this will only make sense if your home network charges for receiving calls while roaming.

2. Reduce outgoing local and international calls by sending SMS [Text messages]
In some countries two or three SMS messages may still be under the cost of a 1 [One] minute roaming voice call.

3. Another option may be to purchase a local SIM card and you share your calls between your own roaming line and this local line or use the local line for outgoing calls and receive calls only on your roaming line.
The only shortcoming is that your contacts/friends will not recognize this new number and my not pick your calls or return your calls if they missed the initial call.
But to safeguard against this send them text messages [SMS] on your roaming line informing them of you alternate local number in your destination country.
They could even call you on this line and that would be a lot of savings for you.

You could decide to use one or two of the options above as it suits your peculiar case and finances.

Tips:

Always get the prevailing roaming rates of the destination you wish to travel to from your network operator.
Note that while roaming you pay for receiving calls; be sure to screen incoming calls and pick only very urgent one also encourage contacts to send Text messages [Receiving Text is basically free].
While roaming abroad contact your home network Customer Care if you experience any difficulties or have any queries.
Take a spare mobile device in case you decide to buy a local SIM cards to save costs.

Warning:

Check that your mobile device will work in your desired destination before you travel. By checking the frequency bands available in the country you are visiting against the bands supported by your mobile device.

International Roaming Service allows you to use your home/local mobile number when you travel abroad. By dialing your mobile number, your friends, family or business contacts will be get in touch irrespective of where you are. The service will only work in countries with which your home operator has live roaming connectivity.

How do I use my network's International Roaming Service?

The International Roaming Service has been designed to ensure ease-of-use for all customers. Getting connected to a foreign network is as seamless as possible. Just follow these easy steps:
• On arrival in a foreign country, switch on your mobile phone.
• You can register to the network into two ways, automatically or manually.
• To register Automatically, just switch on your mobile and the phone will choose one of the available networks in the visited network.
• To register manually, go to the network selection and choose the option manually, once the search has been completed; the phone will display all the available network operators you can select to make calls from your mobile.
You will now be able to make and receive calls on your mobile phone using your home mobile number.

How do I make a call when I'm in roaming?

While You are in roaming, the safest way to dial a number is in international format.

+(country code)(network code)(customer number), for example:
+234 805 585 1145, or
+44 171 1234567, no matter whether the dialed number is in the country of your location or any other.

All other methods of dialing depend on the selected network while abroad.

How do I listen to my voice mail while I'm in roaming?

You can listen to voice messages by dialing a short code version of the voice mail number +XXXXXXX [As provided by your network operator]. Then listen to the voice prompt and enter in the necessary commands.

How are calls charged in roaming?

The main feature of the charging system in roaming is Outgoing Calls, SMS and data.
In the past most operators also charged their subscribers for incoming calls, but today this is almost completely eroded.
Charges depend on Roaming partners charges, which may vary in time.
Note that some network operators charge a flat rate across all countries irrespective of the cost/charge from the roaming partner.
GPRS and other additional services are charged differently, depending on the roaming partner and their pricelists, which may vary in time.

How do I top-up or check my account balance while roaming?

On most networks you use the same local USSD [*XXX*Recharge number# and send] can be used to Top up while roaming.

What can I do if I have a problem while I am Roaming?

You can contact Customer Care by dialing +XXX XXX XXXX as provided by your network operator (international call rate is charged). Customer Care teams are available 24 hours a day seven days a week (including public holidays) to ensure that any problem or question that you might have is resolved as soon as possible with the least amount of inconvenience to you.

You can jolly well travel with your Nexus One phone; it gives you access to various networks worldwide.

Your phone’s default configuration allows you to connect to the network with the fastest mobile data speed.

But you can change the default configuration on your Nexus One phone to use a specific network, either to;

Save costs or
To use slower data so as to save battery life

Your Nexus One phone can be configured to behave differently when roaming in various locations; you may

Choose to use a 2G network for slower data and more battery life
A 3G network for higher data speeds
Or switch off you data access completely to save costs

The following Icons found on your phone’s status bar indicate the following;

You may need to Disable Data Roaming if;

Your cell plan does not include data roaming
You wish to save data roaming costs [Which could get quite huge if not managed]

How to disable Data roaming on your Nexus One phone

Press Home , press Menu , and touch Settings, to open the Settings application
Touch Wireless & networks > Mobile networks and uncheck Data roaming.

Note: If you intend to download high volume data or multimedia clips you may need to use a high speed mobile network. A slower 2G Network would suffice for checking your emails.

AT &T plans to sell new Smartphones from Dell and Palm

"Google TV" on the way

The Internet Search Giant Google has joined forces with Intel and Sony to launch a TV platform based on its Android operating system.

This project simply known has “Google TV “has been ongoing for months according to the New York Times.

According to the report Google has built a prototype set-top box, but the technology maybe incorporated directly into Television sets or other devices.

A version of Google Chrome browser will provide the interface that will allow internet search and downloadable web applications.

Intel atom chips are run on the Android platform.

Google has already started testing the new service with a US satellite TV company called Dish Network Corporation and hopes to link this service with its TV ad-brokering business.

Google TV ads currently run on some satellite TVs and small cable TV systems.

Google really is set to take over all forms of media…………. Is this possible?

Velcom launches 3G in Belarus

Public Mobile to launch services in Canada

A new Canadian operator Public Mobile plans to launch services in Toronto and Montreal in Mid May 2010.

They have already opened 25 shops across both cities.

To truly differentiate themselves from competition Public Mobile is plans to offer contract free lines with unlimited calls and text messaging within North America for CAD 40 [$39.40] monthly fee.

Public Mobile is a privately help company, which plans top extend its services to Ontario and Quebec through 2010 and 2011.

They will offer various mobile handsets from ZTE, Kyocera and Samsung.

Public Mobile got their wireless license spectrum in 2008 and it cover approximately 19 million Canadians in Ontario and Quebec.

They are one of the five new entrants in the Canadian Mobile market. Other new entrants who have recently launched are; DAVE and Globalalive. Shaw Communications says it will beings services later this year.

Google’s HTC manufactured Nexus One is now available on AT&T’s 3G mobile network as well as on Rogers, Telus, Bell and Wind Mobile in Canada.

Google has launched a new version of Nexus One that is compatible with AT&T’s 3G network [which had a different frequency from T-Mobile.

This new version of Nexus One to be used on AT&T and also Rogers of Canada can be purchased as an unlocked device without a service plan.

Google’s Nexus One Smartphone is only available online directly from Google’s web store at a cost $529 without a contract or at subsidized rate of $179 with a T-Mobile 2 year contract.

The Nexus One is unlocked and can be used on several 3G GSM mobile networks worldwide.

In the USA the Nexus One was previously only compatible with T-Mobile’s 3G network hence it was the first network to offer the Nexus One.

LG launches LG-KH5200 [Android-based smartphone]

LG just launched its first Android based Smartphone - model LG-KH5200, which is to be sold by the South Korean’s second-largest mobile operator Korea Telecom.

Huawei to Unveil Smartphone model;U8800

Today at the GSMA Mobile Congress in Barcelona, Huawei is expected to unveil a line up of new Android handsets the most significant would be it's so called world's first HSPA+Smartphone.

The U8800 model runs Android 2.1 would support peak downlink data speeds of up to 14Mb/s and has a 3.8 inch screen.

This mobile offering from Huawei will come with such networking tools as; Facebook and Twitter as well as a Qwerty keypad.
It would be available in green, yellow and purple colours.

The U8800 is aimed at the youth market and is expected to be available by the 3rd quarter of the year.

This year is a promising to be a Smartphone crazed year so stay tuned for more unveiling. And it would be a survival battle of the "fittest" Smartphone/s.
