Of course, like many other students at beauty schools, I expected most of my courses to prepare me for a career as a nail technician. They definitely did this in courses that covered everything from manicures and pedicures to nail art. As a result, my classmates and I all felt prepared for a job in any salon after we graduated.

In addition to learning how to be a nail technician, there were courses that covered business and how to manage a salon. Having those skills makes any graduate more valuable to a salon because they will be prepared to take on leadership roles.

School of Engineering International Masters Scholarship

The School of Engineering will offer 3 Master’s scholarship positions for the 2012-2013 academic session. Each will have a value of £3,000 and will be tenable for one academic year.

Eligiblity

The scholarships will be awarded to international students (non-EU) who are accepted for admission on a full-time basis for an eligible postgraduate Master’s program.

The scholarship will be awarded broadly on the basis of academic merit with candidates requiring a first-class honours degree from a UK university or overseas equivalent.

A Selection Committee will meet in May 2012 to select the scholarship holders.
The winners of the scholarships will be announced in late May 2012.

The University of Sheffield Santander

There are two University of Sheffield Santander Undergraduate Scholarships 2012. These scholarships are available for students starting their undergraduate degree in any faculty at the University. Each scholarship will take the form of a £3,000 tuition fee reduction for the first year of study only.

To be eligible to receive a scholarship students must be self-funded and be a national of, or permanently domiciled in one of the following countries:

To be eligible you must apply for a study place by 22 June 2012 and hold an offer of a study place for entry in September 2012.

The University of Sheffield Santander Undergraduate Scholarships 2012 will be awarded on the basis of academic merit and a short personal statement detailing an applicant’s personal goals and how studying at the University of Sheffield could help achieve those goals.

If you wish to be considered for this scholarship you need to apply to study via UCAS. Eligible students will automatically be sent details of how to apply for a scholarship from January 2012 onwards.

Applicants cannot apply for the scholarship before being offered a study place at Sheffield.

The deadline for applications is Friday 29 June 2012. The results will be announced by Friday 27 July 2012.

Feodor Lynen Research Fellowship for Postdoctoral Researchers

Submit an application if you are a researcher from Germany with above average qualifications, at the beginning of your academic career and only completed your doctorate in the last four years. A Feodor Lynen Research Fellowship for postdoctoral researchers allows you to carry out a long-term research project (6 to 24 months) you have selected yourself in cooperation with an academic host you have selected yourself at a research institution abroad. The host must be an academic working abroad who has already been sponsored by the Humboldt Foundation. The Humboldt Foundation expects the host to contribute to financing the research fellowship.

Scientists and scholars from all disciplines may apply to the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation directly at any time. The Humboldt Foundation grants up to 150 Feodor Lynen Research Fellowships for postdoctoral researchers and experienced researchers annually.

Short-term study visits, participation in congresses and training courses cannot be financed.

Requirements
1. Doctorate, completed less than four years prior to the date of application. Candidates who have nearly completed their doctoral degrees are eligible to apply provided that they submit the manuscript of their dissertation or publications containing the results of their dissertation.
2. Academic publications reviewed according to international standards and printed in journals and/or by publishing houses.
3. Confirmation that research facilities are available and mentoring agreement and a detailed expert's report from an academic host (Humboldt Guest Researcher) at a research institution abroad. On request, the Foundation will confirm whether the prospective host is a researcher previously sponsored by the Humboldt Foundation and/or whether there is a former Humboldt Guest Researcher cooperating with the designated institute (How to find a host). Details of the research project and the proposed timetable must be discussed with the prospective host prior to application.
4. Expert references from the doctoral supervisor and two other academics qualified to give well-founded comments on the applicant's eligibility, preferably including reviewers not working at the applicant's own institute.
5. Language skills: good knowledge of the language spoken in the host country or at least a very good knowledge of English are required.
6. The applicant may not have spent an extended period in the host country prior to application. Applications to continue a research stay already underway can only be considered in exceptional cases. If in doubt, candidates who have been abroad for more than six months at the time of application should consult the FAQs and please check with the Humboldt Foundation (info(at)avh.de) whether formal requirements have been met before submitting an application.
7. The Humboldt Foundation assumes that candidates will abide by the Rules of Good Scientific Practice during the application and sponsorship periods

One of the priority funding points to which the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) attaches particular importance in its Framework Programme on "Research for Sustainable Development is Sustainable Water Management (NaWaM): "One of the major challenges of the future is to ensure the supply of clean water to the world population. Population growth, water pollution and the increasing water consumption per capita have a strong impact on water quality. In addition, expansive climate changes and change in land use influence global and regional water cycles and thus question the medium and long-term avail-ability of water."

In view of this background, the BMBF specifically promotes projects to develop, adapt and internationally disseminate technolo-gies and strategies for the sustainable management of the re-source "Water". Of particular interest in this context are the thematic fields of Water and Energy, Water and Health, Water and Nutrition, Water and Environment, as well as Water in Urban Areas. At the centre of the DAAD Special Programme funded with the resources of the BMBF on "Sustainable Water Management" lies in the promotion of young scientists from Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Iran, Jordan, Vietnam and Indonesia. The programme section on "Study Scholarships and Research Grants for Foreigners" offers highly-qualified Students and Doctoral Students from the above-mentioned countries the opportunity to study in specialised relevantly selected English-spoken Master's programmes at German universities, or, for carrying out their PhD projects in the thematic field of "Water in Urban Areas" in Germany.

Stipendienleistungen

Ferner zahlt der DAAD eine Reisekostenpauschale von EUR 825. Alle Stipendiaten werden über den DAAD kranken-, unfall- und haftpflichtversichert.
Wir weisen darauf hin, dass es sich bei diesen Stipentien um Teilstipendien handelt. Es wird erwartet, dass die Stipendiaten einen Eigenbetrag zu den Gesamtkosten leisten.

Talent for Governance Training Scholarships for Developing Countries

The overall aim of Talent for Governance is to strengthen local governments in developing countries and Eastern European (non-EU) countries. They aim to achieve this through the training of young civil servants. With the gained knowledge and skills, they can work to alleviate their communities of widespread poverty and a lack of basic services.

The Talent for Governance will organise the talent programme three times in 2011. All three programmes will have a different theme. The theme is based on the topic of the training courses at The Hague Academy for Local Governance that are part of each programme.

Scholarship value/inclusions:

A Talent for Governance scholarship will generally cover all living expenses during the stay in the Netherlands, travel costs and the training course fee of the chosen training course ( exactly what costs are specified elsewhere in these regulations). The scholar must cover any other costs from their own resources.

Eligibility:

You are eligible for applying for this international talent programme if,

• you are a civil servant working for a local government institution;
• you are young (37 or younger) and ambitious;
• you work in one of the countries on our country list;
• you have at least two years of work experience in local governance and will be working there for at least two more years;
• your English is fluent;
• you are able to write a convincing letter of motivation for your participation in the programme;
• you can show the relevance of the programme by submitting a real-live-case project proposal from your own work to work on in a back-home-action plan. Your employer needs to sign a statement that they will give you time and support to implement the action plan once you return home.
• you are willing , once you are selected, to commit yourself to the programme and show this by contributing a set amount of Euros (more info on the application procedure page).
