Election and Candidates for House Manager

Dear all

Here are the details of our upcoming election to be House Manager of the ISC:

When and Where?
On Tuesday the 7th of February at 6pm at the International Student Centre (22b Buccleuch Place).

Who can vote?
Anyone that turns up, provided you are a student at the University of Edinburgh - I.e. have a UoE Student Card.

How will it work?
Once we are all gathered each of the candidates will in turn get a chance to tell you why they wish to be House Manager - aka why you should vote for them. They will have 5 minutes MAX each. Afterwards we will have a vote which will be by secret ballot. Whoever gets a majority wins.
Afterwards we will have a short Q/A session regarding the new ISC Constitution.

Who's the candiates?
Glad you asked, we have 5 (!) candidates: Jessie, Clemens, Xuebin, Kerttu and Clara. Please see below for a short statement of intent from each:

Jessie Holbek:
Hello,
I already spend quite a bit of time at the ISC, and am familiar with the core committee members and how the ISC works. Being an exchange student, this would be my one chance to be part of the core committee at ISC. Oh, and I would make sure the ISC is always fully stocked - including fresh milk! ;)

Xuebin Lu (aka Leo):
As one of the student representatives in the department, I often listen to students about their concerns for the quality of teaching, and resolve conflicts between teachers and students by using my interpersonal skills. This role allows me to be more responsible.
The reason why I want to take this role is that I regard this is a opportunity to be more involved in ISC's operation. This may enhance my problems solving skills in different situations. And I am willing to learn more from ISC, such as event organization, by participating the meeting and activities in ISC event organization and improve myself.
If I can take this role, I am willing to make sure the sufficiency of food and office supplies and they are well-organised. Also I am willing to study about different tastes of the tea or biscuits, and ensure maximum of the value of money as my obligation, and try to keep the total cost and expense down.

Clemens Wolff:
Why do I want to be House Manager?
1. I love the ISC and would enjoy being more involved/giving back.
2. I am well organized and rigorous to the point of being
obsessive-compulsive (call it 'German', for short) and thus well
suited for a janitorial/inventory-management position.
3. I generally have fairly strong ideas about a lot of things and will
thus add another perspective and active discussion element to the
core-committee.
4. I tend to be fairly approachable and like to think that I am a
decent ambassador for the ISC - I should thus be a decent ambassador
for the core-committee too.
5. I have been asked to run for the position.

What do I intend to do if I get the position?
1. I will represent the liberal/green/hippie vote on the committee,
supporting stances such as (but not limited to):
1.a) Encouraging more recycling/reducing waste by not buying
over-packaged products and by making recycling easier (larger/more
bins, add a third bin for packaging alongside the existing bins for
paper and landfill).
1.b) Exploring how interested people would be in switching the ICS's
offerings to organic/fair trade/ethical produce.
1.c) Possibly offering healthy alternatives at Coffee Evening (fruit,
hummous with veggie dippers, etc.).
1.d) Possibly offering special dietary requirement alternatives at
coffee evening (vegan, gluten-free...) - can easily be made to overlap
with point 1.c) above.
2. I will encourage more diversity at Coffee Evening by not buying the
same(ish) biscuits, sweets and cheese every week.
3. I will promote volunteer participation in the running of Coffee
Evening by encouraging volunteers with baking skills to step forward
and create stuff for Coffee Evening instead of only buying commercial
produce all the time. The cost of ingredients (but only the cost of
ingredients) will be reimbursed from the Coffee Evening budget - but
considering how ridiculously cheap it is to bake cakes and pastry,
there should still be plenty money left for cheese/commercial produce.
I'd be happy to kick-start this initiative myself but I am fairly
optimistic that something along these lines could gain traction.
4. I will initiate a discussion of considering the ISC's budget as one
entity rather than keeping separate books for events/trips/house. This
would allow for possible surpluses from trips/events to be used to
make Coffee Evening and the Lounge even more awesome (e.g. buying more
games/fancy coffee machine, possibly having Coffee Evening more than
once per week, etc.) all while eliminating the small-change-problem
from ticket sales due to not having to feel guilty about rounding to
the next reasonable number any more.

Clara Sophie Kantner:
Why I am really interested in becoming the new House Manager
The ISC has definitely become something of a second home to me during the last semester.
Obviously, I am there during my “official” volunteer shift, fulfilling all my duties and trying to
be welcoming for everyone who comes in. But I also spend a lot of my free time there – after
lectures and tutorials, when I am supposed to be studying, and generally, to relax and find
some peace.
So if I took up the position of House Manager and joined the Committee, I feel like the time
I sit around and drink coffee could be spent slightly more productive. I generally like to keep
the place clean – or at least cleared of dishes and trash – and organize the kitchen area. I
have done stocking before and once I know where to find all the necessary things like coffee,
tee, filters, milk etc, I am sure that I would have no problems keeping an eye on the stock
and buying supplies, within the given budget.
I would generally love to be more involved in pub nights, events and whatever necessary
since I feel like I should give something back to the ISC. Without it, I would never enjoyed my
first semester here so much.

One last thing: I am a huge caffeine addict, so I have a strong personal interest that there is
always coffee. Also, I now know where the recycling is.

Clara

Kerttu Kaikkonen:
I would like to state my intent of running for the position of House Manager in the International Student Centre. I am an active user of the ISC services (lounge, events and trips) and a member of the events sub-committee as well as a lounge volunteer, but I would very much like to become even more involved in running the ISC. This is my only chance of doing so, since I am unfortunately going back to Finland in June to finish my degree.

I believe I would make a good House Manager for the ISC. I am reliable and honest, and I already have an idea of how the ISC works as well as what is required of the House Manager. As House Manager, I would take care the lounge never runs out of things and, since I already am at the lounge on a daily basis, keeping an eye on the stock would be easy for me to do. I would look into getting a working recycling system to the lounge, listen to what people want for the coffee evenings and make an effort to provide accordingly.

I feel I have something to give for the ISC with my prior experience in being a member of the board of a society and it would be easy for me to get on top of things. I was just before Christmas re-elected as Information Coordinator for our student organisation back in Finland, making this my third consecutive year as a board member. Also, as a visiting student, I could provide the Committee with a valuable visiting student’s point of view on things.

IMPORTANT! Getting involved in running the ISC - New House Manager, Constitution and Information Evening

Dear All

Yesterday our House Manager Zahid decided to step down from his position. This sadly leaves the ISC with an empty spot in our Committee, but it also allows us to inform you about something that we've been working on in the background this year.

When a member of the Committee leaves a new member must be found, but how?
The ISC is, despite what many believe, not a society and as thus does not have any formal method for electing new members of the Committee. The old Committee simply elected the new Committee, end of story. Given the increasing focus on transparency in the organisation of the University this is of course not a good thing. Therefore the current Committee has forged out what will hopefully be the foundation of a more open and honest ISC - namely a Constitution.

While the constitution is not officially in effect we figured that we should follow the ideals of our own brainchild and follow the constitution in the selection of our new House Manager. Therefore we call an Extraordinary General Meeting of the ISC two weeks from now, on February 7th at 6pm - that is right after Coffee Evening in two weeks.

What does that mean?
It basically means that on that date we will have a vote to elect the new House Manager - everyone is welcome to come and have your say.
Also if you are interested in becoming the ISC's new House Manager you must declare you interest through a statement of intent sent to iscedi@gmail.com at the latest on January 31st or in writing delivered at the ISC office (22b Buccleuch Place).

Who can stand?
Matriculated students of the University of Edinburgh who will be here for the duration of the post - that is until approximately the end of the semester when a whole new committee will be elected.

What must the statement of intent contain?
At the very minimum your name, matriculation number and contact details. Preferably also why you wish to become House Manager and what you intend to do if you get the position.

What is the job of our House Manager?
First and foremost to keep the ISC stocked. That is bulk buy coffee and tea, buy stuff for coffee evenings, ensure we never run out of filters, milk etc. But also acquire various office supplies such as printing paper, batteries, pens and other things that we might need.
The House Manager is also be part of the ISC Committee and must participate in the meetings and activities of the Committee and will be expected to help out where needed.
Candidates will be organised and reliable, be able to keep an overview of current stock and ensure supplies do not run out (and perhaps a drive to get recycling working).

What is the benefit?
Feel-good factor, a say in how the ISC is run and you will be, almost, the sole decision maker as to which coffee/tea we drink and which biscuits/cheeses we eat at coffee evenings.

What's the deal with this constitution?
As part of the evening we will also encourage people who are interested in the organisation of the ISC to come along and ask any and all questions regarding running the ISC but also about the new constitution and provide us with comments and feedback about its form - so if you want a say in how the ISC is run in the future; have a look at the constitution: Here.

ISC Trip to St. Andrews January 21st

Join the ISC on our first trip in 2012 to St. Andrews. The historical town of Scotland, which is home to the world famous and beautiful golf course, magnificent castle ruins, and a ancient cathedral. Spend the day touring the castle, cathedral and town and experience some of the best sightseeing Scotland has to offer.

Departure time: 9 am from the ISC - 22b Buccluech Place
Return time to Edinburgh: about 6 pm

We will not wait for any late students. The buses are set to depart at 9 am from the ISC and leave at 4.30 pm from St. Andrews. If you are late for either buses we are not responsible for your transportation. No refunds are given either.

Tickets:£8

Tickets include transportation to and from St. Andrews, and entrance to the Castle and Cathedral.

Tickets can be reserved on Eventbrite - URL to follow on Tuesday Jan 17th. (User registration required at www.eventbrite.com)

We will release 15% more tickets than there are available. To offcially attend the trip you must come to the ISC on Wed Jan. 18th from 6-7pm to purchase your ticket.

You can reserve one ticket at a time. One person may not reserve more than one ticket in their name. It is required that each ticket be under a different students name. Tickets are for University of Edinburgh students only. The only exception to this rule is for spouses or children, in which case one extra ticket may be purchased.

Online Ticketing Scheme

To get a ticket for an ISC trip or event we will release a URL for each ticket sale. This URL links you to a registration page where, at the specified time on the Monday before a trip or event, we will open the ticketing to the public.

This registration for a ticket online does not guarantee you a ticket. It merely reserves you one until you come, on the assigned date, to pay for and collect your official ISC ticket. If you do not come to pay for and collect your ticket from the ISC you forfeit your right to a ticket.

We may release more reservation tickets than there are actual tickets (we will notify if that is the case). This is in response to our experience that people register but never buy their ticket - an inconvenience for people who did want a ticket on the day and a further inconvenience for us as we will lose money (remember the ISC does not make money of our trips and events we subsidise them) if we do not sell enough tickets.

After all tickets have been reserved a waiting list will come into affect through eventbrite. Tickets that have not been collected on the set payment date will then be released, in order of registration, to those registered on the waiting list.

Only matriculated students can purchase tickets, each student can only register for one ticket. One student can pay for as many registered tickets as they would like to, given they have either the matriculation card of the other students or proof of their registration online.

Terms and Conditions of the ISC

The Golden Rule:

The ISC is run entirely by student volunteers, from lounge volunteer to President – nobody is paid. Furthermore the ISC subsidise everything we do – we do not make money of you. This means our volunteers primary concern is getting a good degree! While our commitment to doing our best is in no way diminished we simply cannot offer a service at a commercial standard – that is not the goal anyway – so please:

We will make mistakes - bear with us.

The ISC café is open to matriculated students of the University of Edinburgh, only.

Trips and events organised by the ISC are for matriculated students of the University of Edinburgh students, only. Exceptions will be made for spouses and dependants of matriculated students of the University of Edinburgh.

There will be no refunds issued for tickets to events or trips run by the ISC. Students are welcome to re-sell their ticket to another student at their own discretion.

The ISC cannot be held responsible if participants miss the bus or any other inconveniences that could have been avoided by reading the information provided by the ISC.

If students do not respect the times set out for departure and return during trips, the ISC reserves the right to leave without them.

Buses for trips will depart at the time stated on the ticket and are not required to wait.

Each student can by a maximum of 1 ticket per event or trip. However, an additional 1 ticket can be purchased for a spouse or dependent.

The ISC is not liable for any damage, loss of property or injury during its events or trips.

Ticket pre-registration will be held online prior to ticket collection. Students may register for a single ticket and must collect this ticket at the specified date, or forfeit the right to this ticket.

Another student may collect a ticket for any other pre-registered student.

Students who behave inappropriately will not be permitted to attend further trips or events with the ISC.

All students are expected to respect the volunteers of the ISC and the time they spend making these trips and events possible. Those who are disrespectful will not be permitted to attend further trips or events with the ISC.

Students are expected to follow the requests and rules set out by the ISC and its volunteers during all events and trips. If students do not, the ISC reserves the right to ask students to leave events and trips, and ban them from further events and trips.

We will not wait for any late students. The buses are set to depart at 9 am from the ISC and leave at 4.30 pm from St. Andrews. If you are late for either buses we are not responsible for your transportation. No refunds are given either.

Tickets include transportation to and from St. Andrews, and entrance to the Castle and Cathedral.

We will release 15% more tickets than there are available. To officially attend the trip you must come to the ISC on Wed Jan. 18th from 6-7 pm to purchase your ticket.

You can reserve one ticket at a time. One person may not reserve more than one ticket in their name. It is required that each ticket be under a different students name. Tickets are for University of Edinburgh students only. The only exception to this rule is for spouses or children, in which case one extra ticket may be purchased.

We are holding a ticket sale for the St. Andrew's Ball, organised by the Edinburgh Exchange 360 Society.

The ticket sale will be on Tuesday 25th October, 6.30pm, @ ISC Lounge (22b Buccleuch Place)

The event in a nutshell:

This is a black tie event. The ticket price will include: a red carpet welcome with a traditional Scottish bagpiper upon arrival, a drinks reception in the museum galleries, a 3-course meal, wine, tea/coffee. Following the lovely meal there will be live music, disco and ceilidh and a VIP after-party at the Opal Lounge.

Tickets cost £45 during October and £50 in November.

The ISC is working in collaboration with Edinburgh Exchange 360 Society for the sale of tickets but we are not responsible for the main organisation of the event- other international and language societies are.

This message only applies to those who are non-UK and non-EU students with a Tier 4 student visa. All of you would probably have received an email from the registry about the Census point a while back, but we at the ISC thought it would be good to remind everyone anyway.

The purpose of the Census is so that the university maintains its Highly Trusted Sponsor status as a sponsor of Tier 4 students with the UK Border Agency. The consequence of you not doing the Census will result in you being withdrawn from the university and subsequent deportation.

Basically, what you have to do:

You can check this by going to MyEd -> Studies -> Program of study box should say whether you're registered and matriculated. This is an important first step as your student visa will be invalidated if the University does not confirm your attendance by 5 weeks after the start date.

a) University of Edinburgh student card

b) Passport and visa

c) Biometric card (if you have one)

As mentioned before, the Census is crucial as you will be withdrawn from the University and removed from the UK if you fail to do the Census. If your passport lasts more than 6 months, you will have 60 days to leave the UK if you fail to do the Census.

If you cannot attend:

Due to illness, fieldwork, research work, placement etc: you must inform the Academic Registry: registry@ed.ac.uk.

If you are ill, you must provide a medical certificate and you must report as soon as possible in person to the Academic Registry.

If you have interrupted your studies, make sure you are listed as such on MyEd as you are not expected to attend the Census.

New Online Ticketing System for Trips

We will be switching to an online ticketing system NEXT week for the trip to Culzean Castle. The system will work through www.eventbrite.com where it will be possible, at 6.30 pm on Tues Oct 4th, to register for a ticket with your name and email address.

Once you have successfully done this you will come to the ISC (22b Buccleuch Place) on Wednesday Oct 5th at 6.30 and pay £10 for and collect your official ISC ticket. Just by registering online (for what it says is a free event) does not mean you are guaranteed a ticket. If you do not come on Wed to pay for and collect your ticket it will be released to someone else.
