Late this Friday, Craigslist removed its Adult Services section for American Craigslist users, leaving only a CENSORED bar where the link would normally be. This comes after months of attention and pressure from news outlets and local governments to close the section, which is widely known as a haven those interested in working or hiring in the oldest profession.

It is likely that Craigslist took action this weekend due to last week’s letter from seventeen state attorney generals demanding that the section be taken down.

However, it is unclear exactly what this CENSORED bar means for the future of the section, because Craigslist has not, as yet, released a statement. But that doesn’t mean no one has speculated.

If Craigslist has bowed to public pressure, that would signal a major shift in the company’s strategy.

According to the Advanced Interactive Media Group, Craigslist’s adult services section accounts for 30 percent of its overall revenue — a projected $36.6 million in 2010 out of $122 million…

Craigslist has made numerous changes to its sex listings over the years to accommodate critics, changing its sex listings label from “erotic services” to “adult services,” imposing rules about the types of ads that can appear, and manually filtering ads using attorneys. But it has also fiercely defended its overall practices as ethical, and criticized censorship as a useless and hypocritical dodge.

I’ve reached out to Craigslist for comment and await their reply. But the choice of words is significant – the section wasn’t simply removed, the censored word was used.

The site has been embattled as old press and state attorneys general use any excuse to blame sex crimes on the site. From South Carolina Attorney General Henry McMaster’s failed crusade against them to a variety of press stories about sex and other crimes. If it’s just a sex crime it isn’t a story. But if a listing on Craigslist was involved, it’s a big story.

If this does indeed mark the end of the line for the adult services section on Craigslist, it doesn’t mean that all adult services ads will magically vanish; they’re likely to migrate to other parts of the site. That said, the attorneys general will no doubt view the apparent shutdown of the adult services section as a victory in their war against the online sex trade.

And how will all this effect the future of certain PAX meetups? We’ll have to wait and see.

Solar images in three different wavelengths in extreme ultraviolet light are combined together to show solar activity over almost three months (June 2 — Aug. 26, 2010). Each wavelength is shown in a different color. The wavelengths are at 211 (red – 2 million degrees), 193 (green – 1.3 million degrees), and 171 Angstroms (blue – 600,000 degrees). The cadence is basically a frame every 45 minutes. The brightest areas are active regions, which have stronger magnetic field than the surrounding area.

One of the trapped Chilean miners is going to have some explaining to do after his wife ran into his mistress at the mine’s entrance.

Britain’s Sun newspaper reports the wife of Yonni Barrios, Marta Salinas, was stunned and upset to find his girlfriend Susana Valenzuela also conducting a vigil for him.

Salinas told the newspaper: “Barrios is my husband. He loves me and I am his devoted wife. This woman has no legitimacy.”

This actually happened to me when my gallbladder went out my freshman year of college.  One GF showed up while I was with another GF and I was like, oh fuck.  time to be passed out…. lost a class ring because of that :(

        This is a group from a church at the end of my street. Apparently they have been grouping in front of a couple’s house and reading their bible loudly for the past 7 years. They may have also driven another couple from the area as well by doing the same thing. Tonight most of our neighbours came out and were successful in getting them to leave. The people who go to that church don’t even live in our area! Police came by shortly thereafter.

        Explanation: Have you ever seen the Milky Way’s glow create shadows? To do so, conditions need to be just right. First and foremost, the sky must be relatively clear of clouds so that the long band of the Milky Way’s central disk can be seen. The surroundings must be very near to completely dark, with no bright artificial lights visible anywhere. Next, the Moon cannot be anywhere above the horizon, or its glow will dominate the landscape. Last, the shadows can best be caught on long camera exposures. In the above image taken in Port Campbell National Park, Victoria, Australia, seven 15-second images of the ground and de-rotated sky were digitally added to bring up the needed light and detail. In the foreground lies Loch Ard Gorge, named after a ship that tragically ran aground in 1878. The two rocks pictured are the remnants of a collapsed arch and are named Tom and Eva after the only two people who survived that Loch Ard ship wreck. A close inspection of the water just before the rocks will show reflections and shadows in light thrown by our Milky Way galaxy. Low clouds are visible moving through the serene scene in this movie.

        An Australian company Tuesday said it had developed a laser tracking system that will stop chunks of space debris colliding with spacecraft and satellites in the Earth’s orbit.

        Sounds like this is the start of a global effort to thwart the Kessler Syndrome from happening.

        If a human ever sets foot on Mars, will it be a giant step or an exhausted shuffle?  Long-term space flight so weakens fitness that an astronaut heading to the Red Planet may lose up to half the power in key muscles in the course of the mission, scientists have found.The loss — equivalent to a crew member aged between 30 and 50 returning home with the muscles of an 80-year-old — would add a major danger to a trip already laden with peril, they said.

        Sounds like they need to keep up the gravity on their trip.

        Whisky lovers have another excuse to enjoy a dram — scientists in Scotland on Tuesday unveiled a biofuel to help power cars developed from the by-products of the distillation process.Researchers at Edinburgh Napier University have developed the biofuel and filed a patent for the product, which they said could be used to fuel ordinary cars without any special adaptations.The biofuel, which has been developed during a two-year research project, uses the two main by-products from the whisky production process…
