Good morning -

I need to get a new hard drive for my computer. After a friend tried to rescue me from the blue screen of death, and couldn't even get to the hard drive, she told me to take it to the Geeks and see if they could do anything. They ran their Dx testing and found it is the hard drive. He brought out a 500 gig hard drive that is on sale this week for $75. He mentioned that the old hard drive was SATA. When I got home to google to see if I could get a better price, I am finding that I might need more information. I am finding drives that say "SATA 6" or "SATA 3", "SATA 3.5", "SATA 2.5" etc... what do the numbers mean and does it make a difference which one I get??

Thank you

My guess is that the numbers indicate the physical size of the drive IE 2.5 inch drive 3.5 inch drive etc.

DA,

thanks for response, I did run HD check/defrag. everything else was running pretty much as default factory setting.

I do not use this laptop on my lap but as a substitute of desktop on my desk; no I didn't try safe mode, however try run any possible diagnostics I could find and then I had complete crash.

I think what happened was that on shut down W. updater was running 3 updates, I lower the lid about 45 dig. but it shut it down. Next day those updates were in attempt to install but failed every time. After all it wouldn't even connect on line. So I rescued some files on the stick and did complete re- installation. Needless to say that problem with hi memory use and slow operation start about 14 days prior to that crash for whatever reason.

So let it be a warning to others when it is updating don't even accidentally shut it.

Again thank you for response and thoughts, Jaro

Good info and helpful reply.. Thank you!

Second,

Cindy - Anytime you are attempting to run a "Clean" using Malwarebytes or SuperAnti, you should always run system in "Safe Mode with networking Support" while scanning.

Also, make sure to run both programs "Update Tab/Button" before cleaning attempts.

If I read the under lying position on your original post you lean towards the file being harmless. Regardless there is no reason not to submit it.

If they answer that the file is deemed malicious:

1. I would turn off System Restore as doing so will delete all prior restore points.

2. I would scan the system with AVG.

3. I would then download and scan the system with SuperAntiSpyware Free Edition

    and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.

4. Then I would activate System Restore again.

Be sure all applications are fully updated before running scans.

DA

If this is not successful I would contact the AVG forum for their input.

First thought: did you submit the AVG finding to AVG for analysis? There is little information on Google regarding your target file. I don't have it on my Vista system.

To do this open the AVG interface>History>Virus Vault. On the appearing report locate the entry of concern. Right click on that file. On the appearing drop down menu select Send to Analysis. Follow the instructions.

It appears from your report the file is being replicated in and stored each time a restore point is created.

The last few days I have been getting "dings" from AVG Security for a virus called "luhe.flha.a". does anyone know anything about this? I was "in" 2 files a couple days ago... I told it to delete/remove them. AVG ran this afternoon while we were away for Easter dinner and I came home to about 6-7 "dings". The first time it was attached to a file with my "The Master Genealogist" file, and a "System restore" file. This time they were ALL System REstore files. Again, I 'removed' them.

Any ideas where this is coming from? I think the only thing that I have done different is run a program called BCL ALLPDF Converter 3. It's used to combine more than one PDF file into one file. I called the show a couple weeks ago asking for a way to combine/convert files (word and PDF) and this is the one I chose. It was $49, but after converting all files form word to pdf, it allows me to then put all 7 pdf files into ONE pdf file to email to council members.

As far as I can telll, that is the only thing that is different in recent weeks.

Any ideas???

With web based e-mail accounts, whether it be Hotmail, Yahoo, G-mail or other, the reoccurring concern voiced is spam. The main tool for limiting spam is user discipline in how the account is used. Learn the selected provider's offered security options, set the account filters appropriately and never open an unsolicited e-mail; even if the goal is to unsubscribe.

I personally have multiple Hotmail accounts with each dedicated for a
specific use. Two of the accounts are primary and are configured for access through the installed Thunderbird client.

I cannot remember the last time a spam was located in any account Inbox. They are either in the Junk Folder or non-existent.

I am not too happy with my current ISP. Their customer service is terrible. However, my e-mail is connected to them, so I
hesitate to leave. I would like to get a
web based service that is independent of my ISP. You all seem to have a lot of experience and
knowledge so I would appreciate as much input as possible. Please recommend the services you like and why. Thank you in advance.

Crescere

I have a web site and my email is mostly associated with my web site. I have several email boxes with them and use different boxes for different things. This allows me to keep personal and business email separated. I also have an email box with my ISP, but use it only once in a while.

I also have a Hotmail email box and only use that when a web site says I have to give an email address, but I do not expect to continue to communicate with them. I know that Foster uses a Hotmail email box and it appears that he likes it. There are other websites that offer email boxes. Them most of them are web based, but if you have the correct email client you can download your email vie the email client. It takes a little tweaking to do it but most of them will allow it.

I think that if you Bing for free email boxes you will get a several hits.
