There is no niche website without a good topic. So the first thing to do for a budding Internet marketer is to pick a topic for your site. It’s one of the most crucial decisions you can make for your business. Make the agonizing process easier by asking yourself questions such as:

How common is the topic? If it is a popular target among other niche marketers, you set yourself up against a lot of competitors.  Try to find a niche that few if any have exploited yet. That’s how niche sites work. Don’t aim for a topic that’s too wide n scope or else is too well-known.  If you do, you aren’t niche marketing. Similarly, don’t target a single, popular keyword such as “facebook” but instead go for a more specific “how to get a Facebook layout changed” “how to make money with social media.”

How much could it earn? Are there advertisers who pay good money for it?  Could you sell affiliate products about it?  The quickest way to find out is by using keyword suggestion tools such as AdWords’ and places like Amazon or eBay. No niche website could earn you money if no one wants to pay you for it. Don’t stick with just one advertiser or affiliate program, by the way.  Try several.  Putting your eggs in one basket is asking for trouble.

How well do I know it? If you aren’t an expert on the topic, developing the niche site would be hard.  Do this test: Say you want to use “smileys on Facebook.” Come up with titles for about a dozen articles on that topic.  How easy can you do that?  If it’s effortless, you may know enough to get started.  Honestly look at how good you are at it. You don’t want a topic that you’d struggle to write about. If you take too much time researching, you won’t make a lot of money and you won’t be a real authority either.

Do this check for each niche site you make. It may take some time but rest assured, the time you put into selecting good topics will repay you when your sites take off and start generating income. The key is good planning and working consistently.
