3 Important Things To Do

Although there are many important steps to take when implementing a successful online business, I've decided to point I three that are important for me, and may also help you.

1.	Don’t be in a big hurry to accomplish everything all at once:
Take your time and cover all of the bases with setting up your advertisement methods appropriately. By taking the time to dot your I’s and cross all of your T’s, you will develop great efficiency when it comes to conducting your daily tasks. You won’t miss out on anything in the long run by being thorough from the start.

2.	Build opt-in marketing lists:
Building an opt-in list is one of the most valuable things you can do for yourself. Whenever you refer someone to, or sell a product through your online source, always get your client’s name and email address. By doing this, you are building a solid foundation for future advertisements and sales.

3.	Develop a scheduled routine, and stick to it:
In almost every facet of life where you can observe a successful system at work, whether it is in nature, or business, you will notice established cycles and routines. When building an internet business, the same principles must be applied. Ancient Egypt was not built in a day. The pyramids didn’t just pop-up overnight. It’s important to establish a scheduled routine and maintain a constant vigilance in maintaining it.

Stay On Your Toes Folks

With the emergence of the internet, marketing is no longer the “Advertising of our fathers”. In addition, when considering going down this path, it must be taken into account that internet audiences do not respond the same as the traditional crowd.

Going down this road requires a certain disposition. You have to be inclined to learn a few things about the technologies used in the game, along with having the marketing “know how” to get all eyes turned in the direction you want them to face.

The internet environment is a very “freedom of choice” oriented atmosphere. Therefore, it is important to keep in mind the reality of the diversity of the audience. This means keeping a cultural friendly attitude in order to suit the needs of those who may be coming all the way from the other side of the globe to view your site and products. Also, when it comes to web design, ease of use and visibility is important for enabling users to find what they want easily.

In the field of internet marketing, it is not required to have a college degree. The only thing required is consistency, responsiveness, and creativity.

Once again, it is very important to consider the person or group being targeted when it comes to internet marketing. You don’t want to discuss a product with a Wall Street executive the same as you would with a high school junior out to impress his friends. So, it’s important to take this into account when marketing your products.

When it comes to the internet, never hesitate to get your marketing groove on. But, always keep on top of the latest technologies and ideas out there, and most importantly, keep in mind the most important part “The people you are marketing to”.

Social Network Marketing

Social networks are the fastest growing communities worldwide. Social networks are the places where people gather online to socialize, interact and share information. This presents opportunities for business owners to get highly targeted free leads using social networks like Facebook, MySpace, Twitter and YouTube. With the right approach to social networking, the potential of conducting business online is almost unlimited.

Most people automatically go to one of the major search engines-- Google, Yahoo!, or MSN, when searching for information, services, or products online. The top search engine, Google, ranks social networks much higher than most web sites. It's not unusual to see social networks with a PageRank of 8/10.

The key to social networking is building real relationships. Simply adding online "friends" and sending a thank you message with a link to your site does not turn site visits into leads or sales. As an entrepreneur and business owner, you must be serious about building true friendships on online social networks as you would in the offline world. Even if that friendship does not lead to a sale, remember that most business comes from referrals. Word-of-mouth is the #1 form of marketing, no matter how small or big your business is.

IBAM Members Map

I've set up a Members Map for IBAM using Google Maps API. The Members Map will allow entrepreneurs and business owners to network with other site members closest to their city, region or country.

When you click on a member marker on the map, an info window will display the member's username and avatar with a link to their profile, their city, region and/or country, and the number of posts they have made. Links are also available to the list of posts the user has made, if any.

Enjoy!

IBAM Members Map

Submit Your Site or Blog To Search Engines

Most website traffic comes from the top 3 major search engines. An important first step for site owners and bloggers is to submit your site to these search engines--Google, Yahoo! and MSN Live Search.

Submitting your site or blog to these search engines is only the first step. The quickest way to get your site and Web pages indexed by search engines is to get other sites to link to your home page and internal Web pages.

The more site linking to you, the higher your Google PageRank (PR) will be! Reciprocal links (link exchanges) are of less value than one-way links. One way links to your site or Web pages shows search engines, like Google, that your site is that much important. The practice of trying to get high ranking in search engines is called Search Engine Optimization (SEO).

Bloggers, make sure you post articles on a regular basis. The more frequently you update your blog or site, the more search engine bots visit your site to spider the new content into their respective search engines. Updating your site frequently is also good for SEO, because your site will be found by visitors using keywords from your site content.

Search Engine Optimization can help increase your site or blog's earnings and revenue. More traffic = more money. Here are the links where you can submit your site or blog to the major search engines--

Submit your site or blog to Google

Submit your site or blog to Yahoo!

Submit your site or blog to MSN Live Search

Office Space Coworking

Coworking is a new trend for working independently but sharing the same office space. This new way of working is ideal for entrepreneurs, work-at-home professionals, independent contractors, and business travelers that end up working in relative isolation.

Some coworking spaces were created by Internet entrepreneurs seeking an alternative to working in coffeeshops and cafes, or to isolation in independent or home offices.

Tomorrow I will be attending my first meeting at an open house for a local place called Office Space Coworking.
If you ever want to jump to a section of a YouTube video, all you have to do is add a time variable at the end of the YouTube Web address for that video.

For example, I added "#t=0m23s" to the end of the URL for the Google Latitude video on YouTube. This will start the video at 0 minutes and 23 seconds from the beginning of the video.

Here's how the URL looks like--
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q-Oq-9enE-k#t=0m23s

You can use this neat little trick to link to a particular section of a YouTube video or to bookmark your favorite part of a video. Happy linking!

What should I expect from my graphic designer?

Dealing with a graphic designer can be a bit of an experience, each one has his own way of doing things but for most part there are a few things you can expect from them. I want to outline for you what you can expect and how you should act with your designer. This can make the process far more comfortable and help build a strong working relationship, as many business like to use the same designer time and time again.

Initial Contact:
When you initially contact your designer your biggest question will be how much their services will cost you. Some designers charge a flat rate for particular services, others charge an hourly rate while others will not have any kind of set price but will want to know some details about the project and your company before they give you any kind of cost input (I’m personally in the latter category).
When you encounter a designer who does not charge a flat or hourly rate but is interested in you and your project before cost, you may find this frustrating as you just want the quote. Calm down, breathe easy and answer the designer’s questions, designers who work this way are often very sure of their skills and want to know all the facts about a project first. These kinds of designers are negotiable and often times will try to work with your budget; something that really can’t be done with flat fees or hourly rates.

Design Brief:
Immediately following initial contact with the designer you’ve selected for your project you can expect one of two things:
One: the designer may want to meet with you in person to discuss the project, see your company and its products and services. This is so the designer can get a strong grasp on what your company really is.
Two: you may receive a design brief from that designer; this will be a form you fill out that will contain a lot of questions about you and your company. This is also a common way for a designer to get to know you and your business.
Both of these processes can be nerve rattling as they take up some time and seem very intrusive, but try not to let it shake you. This is an important step towards ensuring that you get a design that reflects your business completely.

Contracts:
Once the designer has collected all the information from you about your company and yourself he/she will look it over to get a full grasp on the scope of the project. At this point your designer may decide that the project is not something that he/she can do and will politely back out, don’t worry this can be good for you as you don’t want a designer who will try to do a project anyway even if they know it’s not something they can do properly. If your designer was one who charges negotiable rates (not flat or hourly) he/she will send you the initial quote on the project at this point, bear in mind that all things are negotiable so feel free to talk the price over him/her but don’t expect it to be done for free.
If a price is agreed upon you will then receive a set of contracts to sign. All designers have contracts; they outline how much they are charging the client, what kind of payment options they accept, penalties for late or non payments and what rights they give to the client over the artwork.
All businesses should understand the concept “If it’s not in writing it never happened”, that is true for graphic design as well. Graphic design is a business, and nothing will insult a graphic designer more than if you treat him like his business is not real or less important than yours.

Designing:
After all of the paperwork is signed the designer will begin working, this process can take days to months depending on the scope of the project, but throughout the process you will periodically receive status reports and concept drafts to keep you in the loop until the project is finished.
When a concept is presented be sure to listen to everything the designer says about it, a good designer has a reason for every element that goes into the design. Also try to always keep in mind that a graphic designer is not hired for their artistic ability alone but also for their expertise and knowledge.
Please keep in mind that you do not know more about graphic design than the designer does, otherwise you would do the work yourself. Graphic designers are experts in their fields, the same as you, and should be treated as such. You would never walk into your attorney’s office and try to tell him/her how to practice law, so try not to talk to the graphic designer like you know more than they do.
They are there to serve you in the same capacity that you serve your clients and customers, try and be sure that you give them the same respect that you expect. By treating the designer with the same respect you expect to receive you will ensure that the designer has nothing but praise for your company and you will forge a strong relationship with that designer.

Projects End:
Once everything is finished and you both have gone your separate ways you can expect to receive something like a letter or thank you card for your business, it is always appreciated when you offer the same courtesy. If you really want to surprise your designer send a thank you note, card or email first, this will really brighten the day of your designer and lets him/her know that you really did appreciate their efforts. Also a gratuity is always appreciated by the designer. Many clients (more than you think) give the designer a cash bonus when the work is completed, assuming that process was not tense or hostile. Nothing tells a graphic designer that you appreciated their services more than by paying them more than what was expected.

Know you have a general understanding of what to expect from your designer, the design process and how you should interact with the designer but I also what to go over what you should expect when dealing with the designer on a payment level.
After a price has been agreed upon most designers will require an upfront deposit of normally 50% of the total bill. You should expect this and not fight it as very few designers will work without seeing money first.
Despite whatever amount of time was agreed upon between you and your designer for final payment you should always make sure that the designer receives the final sum either the same day that the project is completed or within 24 hours.

IBAM was created in March of 2008. It took us a couple of months to get a Google PageRank. Due to our increasing link popularity, on New Years Eve of 2009, our Google PR has now climbed to 2. The next goalpost is for IBAM to get a PR 4 by March of 2009. You can expect to see me guest blogging and writing articles for online magazines a lot more.

Related

Google Updates PageRanks Before 2009

Add Value with Affiliate Programs

Affiliate Marketing

Another way of benefiting from links to your business web site is by developing an affiliate program. Affiliate programs (also called reseller, partnership, referral, or associate programs) are revenue sharing arrangements set up by companies selling products and services. When another site agrees to participate in your affiliate program, it is rewarded for sending customers to your online business. These customers are sent to your site through links on your affiliate's web site. By developing and offering this type of program, you generate increased revenue and increased links to your site. As opposed to pay-per-click (PPC) advertising, affiliate marketing is pay-per-performance (PPP), which means a better return on your investment (ROI).

The History of Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate programs began in 1996 when Amazon.com began to pay web sites for referring customers to their site. If you joined Amazon.com's associate program, as they called it, and properly coded a link on your web site that directed a visitor to the Amazon.com web site or product web page, and the visitor then decided to purchase an item, you received a percentage of that sale. Today we see countless sites following in the footsteps of Amazon.com. These affiliate programs, also known as referral programs, are now very common in the Internet marketplace.

How Affiliate Programs Work

Many different affiliate programs are available on the Internet. These programs all vary in terms of reliability, quality, and the amount of commissions offered. E-tailers (online retailers) have these programs to develop repeat business and increase sales. A side benefit to having an affiliate program is that every affiliate provides a link to your site, which in turn improves link popularity, which in turn improves search engine ranking in a number of the popular search engines. On the downside, developing and implementing the affiliate program takes time and effort, and you have to be competitive with other affiliate programs to encourage participation.

Using Affiliate Networks For Affiliate Programs

Most affiliate programs today are conducting by an affiliate network, a 3rd party middle-man that does all the tracking of affiliate links. In an affiliate network, the advertiser is the company selling its products or services and the publisher is the webmaster that links to the advertisers' sites with affiliate links. Most affiliate networks are pay-per-performance based. There are two ways to make commission-- pay-per-sale (where a customer actually buys a product or service) and pay-per-lead (where a visitor signs up for something like a newsletter or downloads software, etc.). Pay-per-click is usually not implemented in pay-per-performance models.

Related Links

Affiliate Marketing Terms (Glossary)
Sell Products From Other Companies (Make Money Online With Affiliate Programs)

Faking Your Referrer To Get More Traffic

When you visit a website, information such as your IP address, browser, screen resolution and referrer web address are usually recorded by trackers on the site you visit. The referrer address is the web address you came from to get to that site. Most webmasters and site owners check their site stats from time to time to see where their traffic is coming from.

If you are a Mozilla Firefox user, you can download a plug-in that lets you set up what that referrer address shows up as on site trackers. Refcontrol allows you to overwrite the referrer URL that your browser normally sends to web pages to whatever you want! This is a gray hat tactic of promoting your site.

Just keep in mind that the only drawback is this may annoy some people. Sending your website address as the referral to every site you visit will cause webmasters to check out why you're "linking to them." Also, some statistics packages keep a public log of traffic which is indexed by Google. By sending your referrer all over the place, you will end up on some of these lists and generate backlinks for yourself. This is sometimes referred to as "referrer bombing."

There's a test page which will display the referrer that was sent by your browser. You can use this to test your installation and settings. I would also advise users to set up "google.com" to show the referrer as "<Normal>."This will allow you to view Google Map applications without any errors.

Maintaining a Marketing Log with Link Trading

Maintaining a Marketing Log

Record all new links to your site in your Internet marketing log. It is important to maintain this log and review it on a regular basis. You must periodically check to make certain that links to your site are working and going to the correct location. Along with the web address where your site is linked from, you should also keep track of all contact information you may have gathered when communicating with the webmaster or site owner.

A Word of Caution with Link Trading

You must realize when exchanging links that all links are not created equal--

If you provide a prominent link to another related site, make sure you receive a link of equal or greater value.

Be aware when trading your links with sites that receive substantially less traffic than you do; you will probably have more people "link out" than "link in" from this trade. If their site has more traffic than yours, don't mention it unless they do.

Don't ever put your outbound links directly on your home page. Have your outbound links located several levels down so that visitors to your site will likely have visited all the pages you want them to visit before they link out from your site.

Sometimes when people update their site, they change the web address or delete a page altogether. If you have placed a link on your page to that page, and one of your viewers tries to link out to that page, and receives an HTTP 404 error, this reflects badly on your site. You should always check your site for dead links.

How To Increase Your Alexa Ranking Immediately

How To Increase Your Alexa Ranking Immediately

Alexa is a site owned by Amazon.com that tracks the Web traffic of other websites and displays a ranking number for each site. Having a high AlexaRank is very important if you are selling advertising space on your site. Your AlexaRank can demonstrate your site's traffic in an independent valuation of your traffic, which adds credibility to your site. Advertisers will be more likely to buy ad space on your site. The higher your AlexaRank, the more ad revenue you will make.

Make More Money From Text Links

Many text link brokers, like Text Link Ads, use AlexaRank when deciding on the price to charge advertisers for link ads on your site or blog. The higher your AlexaRank is the more you can potentially earn. This reason alone is enough to take advantage of methods of increasing your rank.

How To Increase Your AlexaRank by More Than 25%

AlexaRank usually guesses how much traffic your website gets. For a more accurate picture, Alexa recommends that you install an Alexa Site Widget onto your site or blog. This is the widget for Internet Business and Marketing:

If you click it you will be taken to my current Alexa traffic ranking statistics. After installing this widget on to my site, within the next few days my rankings increased at least 25%. The lower the number is, the higher your AlexaRank is for your site or blog.

If you sell advertising from your blog or website then you should care about your AlexaRank. If that is the case then installing the Alexa Site Widget is a must. It takes only a few seconds and could significantly improve your current AlexaRank.

Managing a Growing Business

Once a start-up business is up and running, how does an entrepreneur manage it? Often the entrepreneurial spirit of self-confidence, creativity, focus and control leads to financial and personal grief as the enterprise grows. A hands-on entrepreneur who gives birth to the business loves perfecting every detail. But after the start-up, continued growth requires a shift in management style. Those who fail to adjust to a growing business can be the cause of the problems rather than the solution. In this article, we will look at the stages through which entrepreneurial companies move and consider how managers should out their planning, organizing, leading and controlling.

Stages of Growth

Entrepreneurial businesses go through distinct stages of growth, with each stage requiring different management skills.

1. Start-up – In this stage, the main problems are producing the product or providing the services and obtaining customers. Key issues facing managers are: Do we have enough money? Will we survive? Can we get enough customers? Many Internet companies are still in the start-up stage.

2. Survival – At this stage, the business has demonstrated that it has a workable business entity. It is providing a service and has sufficient customers. Concerns here have to do with finances—generating sufficient cash flow to runt he business and making sure revenues exceed expenses. The enterprise will grow in size and profitability during this period.

3. Success – At this point, the company has a solid base and is profitable. Systems and procedures are in place to allow the owner to slow down if desired. The owner can stay involved or consider turning the business over to professional managers.

4. Takeoff – The key problem here is how to grow rapidly and finance that growth. The owner must learn to delegate, and the company must find sufficient capital to invest in major growth. Properly managed, the company can become a big business. However, another problem for companies at this stage is how to maintain the advantages of small business as the company grows.

5. Resource maturity – At this stage, the company has made substantial financial gains, but it may start to lose the advantages of small size, including flexibility and the entrepreneurial spirit. A company in this stage has the staff and financial resources to begin acting like a mature company with detailed planning and control systems.

Planning

In the early start-up stage, formal planning tends to be nonexistent except for a business plan. The primary goal is simply to remain alive. As the enterprise grows, formal planning is usually not implemented until around the success stage. Planning means defining goals and deciding on the tasks and use of resources needed to attain them. Entrepreneurs have to define goals and implement strategies and plans to meet them. It is important that entrepreneurs view their original business plan as a living document that evolves as the company grows or the market changes.

Organizing

In the first two stages of growth, the enterprise's structure is typically very informal with all employees reporting to the owner. At stage 3, success, functional managers are often hired to take over the duties performed by the owner. A functional organization structure will begin to evolve with managers in charge of finance, manufacturing , and marketing. During the latter stages of entrepreneurial growth, managers must learn to delegate and decentralize authority. If the business has multiple product lines, the owner may consider creating teams or divisions responsible for each line. The enterprise must hire competent managers and have sufficient management talent to handle fast growth and eliminate problems caused by increasing size. As an enterprise grows, it might also be characterized by greater use of rules, procedures, and written job descriptions.

Leading

The driving force in the early stages of development is the leader's vision. The vision, combined with the leader's personality, shapes corporate culture. The leader can signal cultural values of service, efficiency, quality, or ethics. Often entrepreneurs do not have good people skills but do have excellent task skills in either manufacturing or marketing. By the success stage of growth, the owner must either learn to motivate employees or bring in managers who can. Rapid take off is not likely to happen without employee cooperation.

Stepping from the self-absorption of the early days of a company to the more active communication necessary for growth can be tricky for entrepreneurs. You can never get anywhere if you're pulling your staff around behind you all the time. Focus more on employee needs and less on financial growth. Entrepreneurs have to make an effort to communicate with employees, conduct surveys to learn how they are feeling about the company, and find ways to involve them in decision making.

Your leadership style has to allow the company to enter the takeoff stage with the right corporate culture and employee attitudes to sustain rapid growth. Leadership also is important because many small firms have a hard time hiring qualified employees. Labor shortages often hurt small firms that grow rapidly. A healthy corporate culture can help attract and retain good people.

Controlling

Financial control is important in each stage of the entrepreneurial firm's growth. In the initial stages, control is exercised by simple accounting records and by personal supervision. By stage 3, success, operational budgets are in place, and the owner should start implementing more structured control systems. During the takeoff stage, the company will need to make greater use of budgets and standard cost systems to provide statistical reports. These control techniques will become more sophisticated during the resource maturity stage.
