Wouldn’t it be nice to know what the free tools are and how well they work?After working on my sites for almost a year, I have a few ideas for you that may save you some cash. For folks that are just starting out this is the best way to start building your new business. Avoid paying for any programs or products until you have a good understanding of the basics like building a web page, niche research, seo and keyword research.

Start off walking and learn how to run! Here are the steps to take for beginners:

Research niches-it has taken me awhile to figure this one out. I knew it but I kind of ignored it and it is so important. Find out if your idea will pan out. Some of the best free tools for research are Google Trends, Clickbank Analytics (for ebooks) and just search engine research to see who you will be competing with.

Website building-one word for this one, WordPress. It’s free and fairly simple to get a site set up. There are loads of tutorials to get you started on this, just Google “wordpress tutorials”. Other good options if you want to get a page up quickly are Squidoo, Hubpages or Weebly. These are all free sites where you can build a web page and publish it in a flash.

Keyword research-another biggie. Google adwords keyword tool is probably one of the best free research tools. It will help you find some decent keywords to use for optimizing your site. There are others that are more sophisticated but I’m focusing on what would be best for a beginner or newbie.

Google Search Engine Tool

Once you feel like you have a good understanding of this tool, you can move on to more sophisticated tools that look at competition and power of the keyword. Another good tip is to use Google search engine and put quotes around your keyword phrase. This will show you how many web pages have the exact keyword you entered.  Remember, the less competition for your phrases, the better.

Promoting and Optimizing Your Site

Once you have done your niche, keyword research and built your site or pages, it’s time to optimize and promote. Optimizing means to make your pages as relevant as possible to your potential customers. Write posts and pages that focus on one very specific point. Each one should have a single keyword phrase associated with it. Don’t try to say or do too much within a post or page.

Free tools to promote your site are all over the Internet. The biggest one is article marketing. You will hear and read much about this method. If you want to get your page indexed in Google quickly, write a relevant optimized article and publish it on ezinearticles. This is by far, the fastest way I’ve seen to get your article in the top search engine results. It’s free to publish and if you do the writing yourself, no cost!

Other free promotional tools include, social bookmarking, rss feeds, pinging, blog and forum commenting. I could write a ton about what I’ve learned on these alone. Learn all you can about each one of these and do them every day after your site is published to jump ahead of your competition.

If this sounds like a lot to you, it is. The key, I’ve discovered is to learn something different each day and then put it into practice. Don’t try to do it all! You will only end up getting frustrated and quit or believe Internet marketing doesn’t work. All of these free methods I’ve described are tried and true. They work! Yeah, you know what I’m talking about. Maybe you haven’t achieved the kind of financial benefits that you were hoping for and even though it’s only been a few months you think maybe you’re doing something wrong or this online Internet business stuff is just a bunch of hooey. I promise myself to learn something new about this business every day and apply what I’ve learned in some way. Don’t veer from the course I set for the day and don’t stop until my task list is finished. I try not to concern myself with what I haven’t accomplished but ponder all the hundreds of things I have and if you doubt that you have done all of these things, write them down. This is proof that you’re making headway and each day you just need to be reminded.

If I get started immediately and don’t dwell on the negative and just tick off those items as I complete them, it gives me a sense of a job well done. The other idea I had about all this effort is, I’m learning valuable skills every day and those will never be wasted. Skills like writing, researching, keywords, seo, marketing, social networking and many more that I can’t think of right now.

My advice to squash those niggling doubts is to make a list in notepad or some other text program at the end of each day of task you want to complete for tomorrow. This list should be more than you think you can do in the amount of time you have. Don’t stop until you are done with your list. Take some time even if it’s only a few minutes and learn one new thing about Internet marketing. Apply that to one of your tasks. Share it with someone else.

If you feel any negativity creeping in, just engage your mind elsewhere. Find a partner or friend that is in the same biz and use them to bolster your mood and do the same for your friend. This can be a lonely business so networking will be important. You are less likely to give up on anything if you’ve partnered with another marketer and have them to share and learn with.

Just writing this reminds me that there is more I can do to remain positive and keep my eye on the prize. Keep on taking steps forward and don’t ever give up!

The Squidoo site is free and you can sign up for an account pretty quickly. The intention of this site is to allow people to create pages or lenses as they call them about a very specific topic. The more focused, the better. A good example of a focused topic would be to create a lens on dog bowls for schnauzers or something like that. If you know a lot about one specific topic, that’s what you should create a lens on.

The cool thing about how to Squidoo is there is a guide out there that is totally free and will teach you everything you need to know about setting up a lens and getting it optimized for traffic. The website itself also has many resources to teach you how to get started. It is the fastest way to get content other than articles up on the Internet.

Squidoo lenses are actually mini websites. Some of the highest rated lenses are full of as much content as many websites I’ve seen. There are modules that you can add to your lenses that help you with things like Google maps, rss feeds, images, videos, polls and lots more functionality. Everything you need to create your new lens is right there. The more unique and fresh your content the better Squidoo likes it.

Lots of people make money with Squidoo and are very successful at it. You do need to build your lenses and optimize them for traffic so you can earn money but it’s not too difficult if you have the write instructions. The simplest method I’ve seen on the Internet on how to build Squidoo pages is written by Pot Pie Girl who by the way is one of my favorite marketers. I’ve gone through most of her tutorials and have read a lot of her posts on Wealthy Affiliate and would like to create my sites based on her examples.

My affiliate marketing website has been online for about a year now and the results I’ve seen so far have not met my expectations. I had been using some article marketing techniques that I learned through another expert. It could have been partially my fault but the process I was taught didn’t seem to be working. We have all been there.  I wasn’t about to give up.

I found out about Wealthy Affiliate through another website owner and started checking them out. After going over the pros and cons and researching their reputation, I decided to give it a shot.  They had so many training lessons and tutorials it was a little overwhelming at first. Some forum members at WA gave me some good advice and that was to start with one tutorial and work your way through one step at a time.

This daily task email really kept me on track and focused which is sometimes hard to do when you work on your own.

Some days are a little easier than others but we are always moving forward promoting our online businesses. Some of the tasks are research related like finding new article concepts and researching related keywords for those concepts. Other days we work on promoting our site by bookmarking and blog or forum commenting. Every day was something a little different but always focused on article marketing and methods to promote our sites.

The most important thing I’ve learned in this club so far has been the process of keyword research. I don’t think I fully understood the proper way to research and how to assess the power of a particular keyword phrase. This has been the big “aha” moment for me. I intend to apply this research technique for any future articles or pages for my website and have already seem improved traffic by using these methods.

Writing articles is another area where I have learned and improved quite a bit. I realized many of my articles sounded too much like advertising copy rather than words that came from the heart. I have learned that if you write like you love your topic, it will show. It has been difficult to open up and just write like I am talking to a good friend but I can see with each new article I am getting better and better at it.

As of today, I have 25 published articles on various article directories with a few of these showing up on the first page of Google for my keyword phrase. I have achieved ezinearticles platinum level publisher status, my website that I created on the first day has 9 pages and 8 posts, I am writing more more quality articles and getting more visitors to my website through the articles. Traffic in general is improving every day and all this has happened within these 22 days with the exception of the platinum level with ezine. That happened about 3 weeks after I joined WA.

According to Google blog, Instant Preview will give the searcher results that will graphically highlight the relevant sections based on the keywords entered. The user will have to click on the magnifying glass to see the previews and once clicked they will be able to hover over other pages to get the preview.  This is to be rolled out starting on Tuesday, November 9, 2010 and may take a few days to complete.

More Targeted Traffic?

According to Google’s testing, users are 5% more likely to be satisfied with the link they click on. Will this mean that when someone visits your site through the Instant Preview, they will most likely be your target customer? According to Google this functionality is bound to help users with slow connections even more than others with hi speed Internet. Since clicking on a link takes up bandwidth, they can preview a page before they make that decision.

What Does This Mean For Internet Marketers?

I think this means that we have to pay even more attention to the layout of our web pages and be more precise about what we are offering and in a visually appealing manner. Not only that but more attention will need to be paid to make sure your targeted keywords and  associated page are highly relevant to each other. If not, you may suffer the consequences of having potential customers decide your page does not contain what they are looking for. Taking this one step further, if you can represent your keyword phrase accurately in an image, you may have an advantage over a competitor.

Another aspect that could result in positive traffic is the fact that searchers can identify your page visually either from some sort of branding like a logo, image or even a chart or graph. That way if they search for you again with Instant Preview your page should look familiar to them allowing potential customers to find you more easily.

The last thing that comes to mind is how will this affect all those Google Ads? The previews of the web pages will show up on the right hand side of the search results effectively covering up some of those ads. One perspective I read about was since the searcher was hanging out longer on the results page looking at previews they may be more likely to click on an ad. Hmmm, something to ponder or test out once this Instant Preview has been rolled out.

Regardless of how you feel about the kingdom of Google, we have to adapt to the ever changing search engine features. Yes, I believe that Google does want to provide their users with the most relevant results in the fastest way possible and understanding that will help make me a better Internet Marketer. I will keep educating myself and learning about how I can provide the best possible customer experience with relevant content that is optimized with pertinent keyword phrases to reach my intended audience.

When I first started in this business, I built a website from scratch and didn’t take any training or do much research and tried to sell some products but my site wasn’t getting any traffic.That pushed me to start doing some research on how to promote my site and get more traffic. I read so much, my head would spin. Eventually, I signed up for a training course and started to learn some specific techniques. This was helpful but still didn’t seem to get my site any more traffic. I kept plodding away using these techniques without much success. I literally spent 7 months doing this. Yikes! Way too long. I’m going to make the assumption that you already have a website and web pages and that those pages already have been optimized with pertinent keywords that you’ve researched. Publish your article! Add your personal information in the bio or resource box on the directory site along with your links back to the topic specific page on your site. Be creative here in your bio.
