It may surprise you to know that one of the most popular questions I get asked by newcomers to internet marketing is related to buying a domain name.

Now I know if you've been around a little while you're probably thinking Buying a domain name! How hard is that? Just choose your name, click and buy! But actually, on reflection, it can be a bit of a minefield out there...

From the minute you arrive at your preferred domain seller you're bombarded with choices, processes and options that are designed to get you spend a deal more than, say, the $4.99 you Originally thought your shiny new domain name was going to cost you.

I decided to pop along to my local domain shop (read click on a bookmark and login) and take a look at exactly whats on offer and whether all these add-ons and extras are totally essential.

1) OK, so the first thing I see before I even type in the domain name I want to buy is that theres a Sale on certain suffixes like .com .net .org

2) I type in my domain name - domain-name-confusion.com - and click the next button and fantastic, its available, but hang on... I can also buy domain-name-confusion.us .name .biz etc and many more. I can also choose from MYdomain-name-confusion, EASYdomain-name-confusion, domain-name-confusionONLINE, domain-name-confusionSTORE and myriad other combinations

3) I decide that no, Im just going to stick to my original choice of domain-name-confusion.com and so I dont check any of the other boxes. I proceed on to what I think is the checkout but OH NO... again Im being asked to STOP!

Why dont I protect my brand and increase my traffic by buying the .org .net and .info - and Im even offered a really amazing special price to buy the job lot! And whats more theres a special box with a list of compelling reasons why I really should do this

4) No thanks, I still want to stick to my original domain-name-confusion.com so I click on the checkout button, AGAIN!

Great! Were onto the summary page where Im told what Im ordering.

But WAIT! Do I want my domain name certified for an extra $2.99? Do I want email adding to my domain for an extra $1.99? Is that Complete or Deluxe, Madam? How about Hosting, Sitebuilder, a blog or even some traffic driving software? Is that Standard, Deluxe or Protected, Madam?

5) No, honestly, youre too kind, but I simply want to buy the domain name! Click on the checkout button, AGAIN!

Phew, the checkout at last! But wait, do I want to add protection to my domain name and make it private? Do I want to add another domain name? Am I sure I dont want the .net OR .info?

Quite a marathon, huh? And, of course, when you are all wrapped up in the dream of having your own website and wanting to make it perfect from the outset, you are vulnerable to emotional suggestions. PROTECT, INCREASE, EXPAND, ATTRACT...

So lets take a look to see if you need all these unfamiliar, but reasonable-sounding options?

Do You Need Extra Domain Suffixes?

You can register a .com domain name with several very reputable registrars for, say, $6.99/yr to $9.99/yr. Fees for registering the other possibilities, .info, .co.uk, .net, .org, .biz, .tv can range from $0.99 per year to whatever the registering company wants to charge.

But is it going to be worth it? And where do you stop with the combinations? .com, .co.uk, .info and then theres the do I add a dash ( - ) just-to-be-on-the-safe-side.com, .org, .biz ? I would say, probably not. The .com brand is so widely known that most people will automatically type in a .com extension on any website they are trying to find.

Private Registration

This option will keep your private details, name, physical address and email address unavailable to anyone checking the ownership of your domain on Whois. Internet law requires that all information about domain registration be publicly available and Whois maintains the databases that hold this information.

If you buy a private registration, your details will not be available to just anyone who wants to check your domain for specific ownership. There are many domain owners who dont think this is necessary but, on the other hand, private registration can help you avoid spam, crank emails and unwanted phone calls.

It is worth bearing in mind that any emails you send from the US that are commercial in nature, like:

i) Promoting a product or affiliation
ii) Suggesting that the reader visit your sales page
iii) Offering a discount for purchasing some product

are required, by the US Can-Spam Act, to have your correct, physical mailing address visible to your email recipients and the correct email address you sent the advertisement from, so this kind of defeats the object of private registration in some ways.

Protected Registration

This form of domain registration protects you from inadvertent expiration of your domain registration, including credit card expiration, failed billing or outdated contact information. It also makes it more difficult to accomplish most malicious domain transfers by Internet predators. Effectively, your domain would be held for you until you renewed the registration.

It can cost more than $25 a year for this service, depending on who you are using for this protection. If you are a small marketing venture, selling a piece of software, an affiliate product or an ebook on a niche product, you may not need this upsell. However, if later your domain starts making lots of money, and you decide that you do need it, you can easily add it.

Business Registration

This level of domain registration keeps need-to-know information about your business in the Whois database. That information can include a map to your store, website photo, business description, phone number and links to vital pages of your website.

The vital information your customers might need to facilitate business deals with your business is visible to millions of searchers in the Whois domain name database.

Do you need it? That would depend on the nature and size of your business and your budget. This would be more of a marketing/budget decision. A small, start-up website selling one ebook would probably not need this additional service.

How Many Years Do You Need?

Every time you register a domain name, regardless of the service you choose to use for the registration, you will be offered a multi-year registration at a discount. It is up to you whether you consider this offer to be a good deal, but you might want to consider something before you do it.

Are you positive that you will still want to own the domain name after the first year? Will you still be in business in a year? Will you have graduated to a bigger, much different online business or another business entirely?

If you take a multi-year package, the registrar will get all the money up front and you will not get a refund if you change your business or drop out entirely.

Hosting On The Domain Registry Site

This is a likely time-saving upsell you will be offered when you register your domain name. It seems like it would be an easy, time-saving option to buy. Your domain and website would be in the same place.

Most Internet Marketers, if asked, would advise against doing this. Putting all your eggs in one basket means your entire business disappears if the domain registrar quits doing registrations or generally just goes out of business.

A better choice would be to find another hosting company that provides the options you need to make your website what you want it to be.

Pay per Click, PPC search engine advertising is considered by many to be one of the most affordable forms of marketing on the Internet. PPC advertising is used to generate leads by directing target traffic to a marketer's website landing page, so the marketer can convert this target traffic into immediate sales; or future sales at a later time. To date, this marketing is a billion pound industry.

There are some pitfalls and disadvantages to using Pay per Click advertising companies. If there were no disadvantages to this advertising, then everyone would be using this method; yet, many Internet marketers do not use it.

In brief, marketers will bid on keywords to use in small ads they create, that the PPC Company will display for search engine users when they use the marketers' chosen keywords they selected to use in the ads. Within these ads is a link to the marketers' unique website, for interested parties to click on.

When the search engine user, uses a particular marketer's keyword in the search engine, that ad shows up alongside the other results for the user to choose from. Overall, the main disadvantage to PPC advertising is taking the time to learn all the complexities involved with it. Too many people have jumped right into it with their eyes closed and ended up wiping out their marketing budgets in short time. They tried, they died.

Ask questions first before you join an affiliate program. Do a little research about the choices of program that you intend to join into. Get some answers because they will be the deciding point of what you will be achieving later on.

Will it cost you anything to join? Most affiliate programs being offered today are absolutely free of charge. So why settle for those that charge you some dollars before joining.

When do they issue the commission checks? Every program is different. Some issue their checks once a month, every quarter, etc. Select the one that is suited to your payment time choice. Many affiliate programs are setting a minimum earned commission amount that an affiliate must meet or exceed in order for their checks to be issued.

What is the hit per sale ratio? This is the average number of hits to a banner or text link it takes to generate a sale based on all affiliate statistics. How are referrals from an affiliate’s site tracked and for how long do they remain in the system? You need to be confident on the program enough to track those people you refer from your site. I don't know about you, but when I first entered the world of internet marketing I thought I could just submit my newly finished website to a few search engines, then sit back as the visitors flocked to my site.

I imagined that people would arrive on my website, as if by magic, purchase goods, and perhaps come back again for more.

A week or so later I came down to earth with a big bump.

I realised that it would take a bit of time and effort to see the results that I was dreaming about!

Since my reality check, I have learned all about the weird and wonderful ways of internet marketing.

In this article I will tell you about my top 5 free ways of increasing website traffic.

All these methods are completely free and if you spend some time on them you will find that they work consistently.

(1)Writing Articles

Writing an article on a subject related to your website and getting that article published has two major benefits:

- People who are interested in your article will read it and often click on the URL in your resource box find out more. This gets you another free targeted visitor. Targeted, because that reader wants to find out more on the subject of your article, which is hopefully related to the subject of your website.

- Every publisher of your article must also publish your "resource box". Adding a resource box with your URL to all of your articles will increase the number of links leading back to your website, which in turn helps to increase your search engine position

(2)Forum Networking

There are many discussion forums on the internet, on every topic you could possibly imagine.

Most of us are sending lots of emails a day, but many of us just sign them with just our name, or perhaps nothing at all.

Instead, why not end your emails with a short signature containing your name, a bit about your website along with the URL?

Keep the signature short (4 lines), to the point and avoid hype or SHOUTING.

Finally, this is one easy way to guarantee instant hits to your website. You can build up credits for free by surfing or building up a downline to surf for you.

The reason for this is that people surf traffic exchanges for one reason - to earn as many credits as possible in as short a space of time as possible!

This gives you a challenge - how do you attract the attention of someone who is looking at your web page for 20 seconds or less?

Here are two tips -

- Know your market - spend some time surfing on the exchange that you are advertising on and pay attention to the types of web pages being advertised. Make sure that the pages you advertise are going to interest your target market.

- Use a short, simple attention grabbing page that can be read in a few seconds - there is no point advertising a huge page of text that takes 5 minutes to read. The chances are, your visitor will get bored and click on the "next" button without giving your page a fair chance.

Regularly invest some time in each of these 5 traffic generating methods and you will see your web statistics moving in the upwards direction before you know it.

Here are some answers about how search engine handle meta tags at Google.

Multiple content values
We recommend that you place all content values in one meta tag. This keeps the meta tags easy to read and reduces the chance for conflicts. For instance:

meta content="NOINDEX, NOFOLLOW" name="ROBOTS"

If the page contains multiple meta tags of the same type, we will aggregate the content values. For instance, we will interpret

meta content="NOINDEX" name="ROBOTS"
meta content="NOFOLLOW" name="ROBOTS"

The same way as:

meta content="NOINDEX, NOFOLLOW" name="ROBOTS"

If content values conflict, we will use the most restrictive. So, if the page has these meta tags:

meta content="NOINDEX" name="ROBOTS"
meta content="INDEX" name="ROBOTS"

We will obey the NOINDEX value.

Unnecessary content values
By default, Googlebot will index a page and follow links to it. So there's no need to tag pages with content values of INDEX or FOLLOW.

Directing a robots meta tag specifically at Googlebot
To provide instruction for all search engines, set the meta name to "ROBOTS". To provide instruction for only Googlebot, set the meta name to "GOOGLEBOT". If you want to provide different instructions for different search engines (for instance, if you want one search engine to index a page, but not another), it's best to use a specific meta tag for each search engine rather than use a generic robots meta tag combined with a specific one. You can find a list of bots at robotstxt.org.

Casing and spacing
Googlebot understands any combination of lowercase and uppercase. So each of these meta tags is interpreted in exactly the same way:

meta content="NOODP" name="ROBOTS"
meta content="noodp" name="robots">
meta content="NoOdp" name="Robots"

If you have multiple content values, you must place a comma between them, but it doesn't matter if you also include spaces. So the following meta tags are interpreted the same way:

metaname="robots" content="NOINDEX, NOFOLLOW"
meta content="NOINDEX,NOFOLLOW" name="ROBOTS"

If you use both a robots.txt file and robots meta tags
If the robots.txt and meta tag instructions for a page conflict, Googlebot follows the most restrictive. More specifically:
If you block a page with robots.txt, Googlebot will never crawl the page and will never read any meta tags on the page.
If you allow a page with robots.txt but block it from being indexed using a meta tag, Googlebot will access the page, read the meta tag, and subsequently not index it.

Valid meta robots content values
Googlebot interprets the following robots meta tag values:
NOINDEX - prevents the page from being included in the index.
NOFOLLOW - prevents Googlebot from following any links on the page. (Note that this is different from the link-level NOFOLLOW attribute, which prevents Googlebot from following an individual link.)
NOARCHIVE - prevents a cached copy of this page from being available in the search results.
NOSNIPPET - prevents a description from appearing below the page in the search results, as well as prevents caching of the page.
NOODP - blocks the Open Directory Project description of the page from being used in the description that appears below the page in the search results.
NONE - equivalent to "NOINDEX, NOFOLLOW".

A word about content value "NONE"
As defined by robotstxt.org, the following direction means NOINDEX, NOFOLLOW.

Whether you want to track a specific type of ad placement or an entire site, custom and URL channels will help you determine what'll be most successful.

Testing will also help you make smart decisions about your ads. If you're considering implementing one of our other optimization tips, we encourage you to test it out with channels. The more you test, the better you know the effects of the ads. The better you know the effects of the ads, the faster you'll realize your revenue potential.

Tip for channel users: When you create a custom channel, give it a detailed name so you can easily identify it later in your reports. For example, "ArticleRightWideSkyscraperOpenAir" could represent your wide skyscraper ad unit with the Open Air palette, located on the right-hand side of your article pages.

What are channels?

Channels enable you to view detailed reporting about the performance of specific pages and ad units. By assigning a channel to a combination of pages or ad units, you could track the performance of a leaderboard versus a banner, or compare your motorcycle pages to your automobile pages. You can even create a channel to track each of your separate domains, so you can see where your clicks are coming from. While channels can be used to track performance and revenue, they won't have any effect on your earnings or ad targeting.

There are two types of channels from which to choose: URL channels, and custom channels.

URL Channels

Use URL Channels to track your performance without modifying your ad code. By entering a full or partial URL, you can begin tracking the performance of particular pages in your site. You can enter a top-level domain name to track all of the pages on that domain, or you can enter a partial URL to track all of the pages below a certain directory. Entering a full URL will track the performance of that particular page.

URL channels are only available for AdSense for content pages. If you would like to track your AdSense for search performance, please use custom channels.

Custom Channels

Custom channels allow you to track the performance of specific ad units based on your specified criteria. By pasting channel-specific ad code into your pages, you can track a variety of metrics across a range of URLs. Use custom channels to track the performance of different ad formats, for example, or to compare different page topics to one another. To learn how to create and assign custom channels, please read How do I create custom channels?

You can also turn any custom channel into an ad placement on which advertisers can choose to place their ads.

With up to 200 AdSense channels, plus 200 AdSense for search channels available for each publisher, you can use channels to gain the insight you need to optimize your site's performance. It's easy to add, deactivate, or rename your channels, and customized reports are simple to generate.

Generating Channel Reports

Active channels gather data that's accessible to you at all times. The data is organized for you in report form and can be retrieved by taking the following steps:
1. After logging in, click on the link to 'Advanced Reports'
2. Select the product you're tracking: AdSense for content or AdSense for search.
3. Then click the radio button labeled Channel data.
4. Next choose the date range in which you're interested.
5. Now choose the channels for which you'd like to assemble a report by using the check boxes.

Note: To easily find a particular group of channels, use the search function.

According to the naming convention described in the custom channels section, if you wanted to find all of the channels associated with your home page, you'd type 'Home' in the 'Find Channels' box. Similarly, if you wanted to find all of the channels associated with rectangular ad boxes, you'd search for 'Rect'. Once you've completed the search, you can simply select all of the results or choose them individually.

6. Once you've selected the desired channels, decide how you'd like to group the data.
- For a day-by-day report of the data from the selected channels choose the Date radio button.
- For an aggregate report of channel statistics over a selected date range, choose the Channels radio button.
Tip: useful for simple comparisons between two or more channels

Improving Your Web Adsense Performance

After running adsense for a while, you may still question why the performance of the ads on your site is still under expectation. This is quite a common question that I recently recieve. Hence, I decide to write this post to provide some sort of hints and tips in order to unleash your Adsense potential.
I use the word "unleash", simple because I do think everyone should have high potential to generate great revenue through Adsense. I hope, after reading this post, all of your Adsense potential can be unleashed and maximized.

1. Make Best, Use URL Channels
Use AdSense URL Channels to determine which pages are making you the highest CTR, CPM, and earnings. Focus your efforts on building pages like those. Channels enable you to keep track on the
performance of each of your ads. However, Google only provides 200 channels and may not enough to satisfy those Adsensers with many sites and ads.

2 . Blend your ads with background
Blending your ads with the background of your site. Apart from the color, font size of both your ads and background fonts should also be the same. Another method of camouflage is to remove all the borders
on your AdSense ads. The border have no paricular use buit will make your stand out. It is also a way to boost your CTR and increase your revenue.

3. Use Blue Links
From my experience, set the color of the link of your ads to blue color may help. Your visitors will think these blue links are just your content links but not an ad. The reason behind is that people have become
used to those clicking blue links.

4. Large Ads outperform small ads
From my experience and the finding from other Adseners, both large and wide ads perform better; while small and narrow are underperform. Of course, it is subjected to your template and layout. The Large Rectangle Ad format (336x280) should be the best ad unit among all.

5. Integrate Ads with Content
Visitors come to your site becuase they want to find those information they want. Integrates your ads as close to your content as possible to ensure that the visitors will also look at your ads. Taking my blog as an example, I have implemented my ads into each post, and the result is quite fruitful and have recieved higher CTR.

Now I will give you TEN TIPS to Boosting your AdSense CTR. After read this post, you are ready to implement it to your Web AdSense.

1. The most important factor is about the placement of ads.
Even if you have used the highest-paid ads, you won't earn more unless your visitors click on them. From my experience, the best place to see the ad is the top of your web page and the next is aside your document's text (just like the right colum of my blog). Visitors will click it more frequently since it will look like your text.

2. You should try to make your ads look as a part of your web page.
In other words, it is a matter of blending or amflaouge. An ad should not stand out as an ad. Visitors are not positive to online advertising and become "blind" to ads as time goes on. They search the internet for content not ads. Especially for Banners - they have a less of 0.5% response. Imagine if you have an Adsense ad looking like the typical
Banner with different colors. It will not be profitable. So, don't have any high contrast between your ads and your content text.

3. Another observation from my adsense experience is that, text ads are better than image ads.
Like what I said in the previous point, people are more responsive to text than images. In a way it is considered as a part of the content text and is more clickable.

4. No Border ads.
One of the best tricks is to erase the borders of Adsense ads and make them, again, having the same color with your website's background.

5. No ads other than Google Adsense ads.
Being legitimate according to Google's TOS is one reason and the second more practical reason is that you do not want to distract your visitor's attention and go somewhere else without clicking your Adsense ads.

6. Traffic.
Try to use legitimate ways of traffic. Some people use Google Adwords and other Pay-per-click search engines. The problem here is to search very carefully for the right niche and keywords in order to make your campaigns profitable. Other ways are link popularity techniques like directories, software or even mass blog submission techniques. Remember, never join those link farms, because that will downgrade
your PR and search engine's algorithms are so clever that they will even ban your listings.

7. Do not rely on one website.
If it is possible, try to make as many websites that contain different contents as possible. Think about it, if you have 10 websites and every website of your own can only make 1 bucks per day on average, then
you can already have an average income of 10 bucks per day.

If you are new in Adsense, you may find some terms that are quite new to you. After loggin into your Adsense Account, the default page should be your "report" page showing different statistics about your adsense site(s). In that table of statistics, there are three terms that you
should know and familiar with.
They are Impression, Click Through Rate (CTR), and eCPM. Therefore, in this post, I aim to introduce these three terms to you.

1. Impressions
Whenever a visitor comes to a site and land on a page, he/she recieves an impression. Impressions are the number of times your webpages with Adsense ads have been viewed. In fact, you can divide the big term "impression" into two specific areas: page impression and ad impression.
You can increase impressions by increasing traffic (preferably targeted traffic) to your webpages. Some of the best ways to increase targeted traffic to your webpages include:

- create more webpages, with relevant, focused content
- create more links to your webpages
- list your websites under relevant categories in more directories
- set up a directory of relevant sites on your website and accept relevant reciprocal links
- write relevant articles, with your site information in the 'resource box' at the end of each article, and submit them to article directories

2. Clickthroughs
Clickthroughs, which are often known as CTR for short, are the percentage of viewers who click on your Adsense ads. You can increase Clickthroughs by increasing the relevance of Adsense ads on your site, and by tweaking the format and placing of your ads.
If every page on your site focuses tightly on the site topic, its more likely that the Adsense ads will too. For example, if every page of your site is about fishing, and the word 'fishing' appears several times on every page, its likely that your Adsense ads will relate to fishing.
The best way to tweak your ad format and placement is to invest in an Adsense Tracker, and test, test, test! People who have done this tend to suggest that the best format is the large rectangle, with background and border the same color as the page behind it, so that the ad blends into the page.
