The key to having a high ranking website that has masses of traffic is backlinks. All to often I see people trying to get a first page ranking on Google, Yahoo and Bing and failing to think about how to get real volumes of traffic.

Unlike CPC (cost per click) advertising, with CPV views to your website are not necessarily initiated by the click on an advertisement. It could be triggered simply by searching for a specific phrase or visiting a certain website.

Users opt-in to receive this type of advertising through ad-suppported software applications and toolbars. This type of application is not to be confused with spyware. Ad-supported applications are always installed with the full consent of the user.

All you need is the Firefox web browser with the CheckFox plugin and the ManageFlitter website.

Simply visit ManageFlitter and log in using your Twitter account and then you can see exactly who you have followed on Twitter but who hasn’t followed you back.

Then it’s just a matter of right clicking, click Select All, then click Check to check all the tick boxes. You can then click the Unfollow link and ManageFlitter will unfollow everyone you selected.

This is a great tool to use if you have reached your following limit or if you just want to get rid of the dead wood from your Twitter account.

The diagram to the right shows a complete link wheel system whereby there are three independent link wheels each linking to the target website.

A link wheel is simply a collection of websites known as “web properties” specifically chosen because they have a high Google Page Rank score. These web sites each link to each other in a circle as shown in the diagram and each one of them has incoming links from other websites too.

Link wheels should be designed so that they are closed. You will see in the diagram (click the picture to see a larger version) that every site in the wheel links to the site next to it except for one at the end. This is considered best practise and in effect funnels the Page Rank to your site rather than just passing it around the link wheel in an endless loop.

Sites included in any wheel link system should include WordPress blogs, social bookmarks, video sites, article directories, press releases, and Web 2.0 sites such as Flickr, Squidoo, Quizilla, Blogger, Weebly etc.

This type of marketing is not considered as spamming because the recipient has to opt-in to receiving the content. Create a high quality profile

Twitterers will judge a book by it’s cover so to speak and you should make sure that your Twitter profile contains a relevent picture rather than the default image, this could be your photograph or company logo for example, and you should select one of the options of background images and not leave your background as the default choice.

Your profile description can be 160 characters so make sure you use them wisely. Make sure that it includes a strong call to action linked to benefits. Use the website URL to link back to your lead capture or squeeze page.

Post your first tweet!

You should never sell in your first tweet – or any other tweets for that matter. You should make it sound intriging and include a link to a URL. I recommend you use the URL shortening service www.bit.ly which can also provide analytics so that you can see how many clicks your tweets are getting.

Do’s and don’ts of tweeting

Post information that will be useful to your followers. This will encourage people to follow you back when you follow them. Remember that your profile URL link and your description do the job of promoting your business. Make sure that all your tweets are interesting and informative.

Ask your followers questions and try to get them to interact with you. Remember to occasionally post something that is personal about you so that people know you are a real person and not just an automated account.

Don’t just post links to your own articles and websites. Add new followers regularly

Use the search facility of Twitter to find people who are tweeting about subjects related to your particular niche or industry. For example a florist might search for people mentioning “flowers”, and a watch retailer could search for people mentioning “Rolex”,”new watch”,”buy a watch”, etc.

Once you get a search result list simply put your mouse over their avatar image and click the Follow + link that appears. Repeat this process each day until you have enough followers.

Many of the people you follow will in turn follow you and this way you quickly build your followers. Periodically you and unfollow anyone who hasn’t followed you. There are several tools on the internet that allow you to unfollow unmutual twitter users semi-automatically.

Interact with your followers daily

Effective use of Twitter for business purposes involves building relationships with your followers, providing them with valuable free information, and never trying to sell anything to them or spamming them. Offer valuable help and you will experience huge success in your business leveraging the penetration of Twitter.

Speak directly to your followers as though you are speaking to one person. Find out what makes you unique in your niche and highlight those differences in your tweets. Research your target audience and try to cater for their wants and needs. This way you will come up with the best tweets and experience the greatest increase in your web traffic and leads.

I’ve been marketing online since 1999 when I first started a mobile phone ringtone company and as a keen social networker I’ve personally read thousands perhaps tens of thousands of blog posts.

Many local businesses have consulted me on improving their blog’s appearance, help with ideas for blog posts, and doing search engine optimisation on those blogs. Here are the top ten mistakes I’ve collated.

Hopefully this list will give you a helpful “heads up” on the common mistakes most bloggers make so you can avoid them!

Read my top 10:

1. Not putting fingers to keyboard because of INFORMATION OVERLOAD!
   This is often the biggest mistake. You might start off with good intentions but then the frequency of your blog posts tapers out. It’s very important to keep blogging regularly. You might be flitting from one “guru” to another “guru” all selling expensive courses that never reveal all of the pieces of the jigsaw. Stop thinking and start blogging! You already know enough about how to succeed in your particular niche to write about it. Preferably you will blog on a daily basis but weekly at worse. If you post any less often than once a week your readers will lose interest. That would be like trying to drive a car without putting any fuel in it. Keep posting regularly to keep the conversation with your readers going at full speed. There are loads of ways to find ideas of things to post about. If lost for ideas just blog about posts other people are making and share some useful information and things you’ve learnt!
2. Not driving enough traffic.. AKA the “Write and Sit” approach
   If you are posting regularly but not driving traffic it’s like thinking you’re broadcasting a TV station without actually switching on the transmitter! There are many ways to drive traffic. You can Facebook, Digg, Twitter, your email list, YouTube videos, forum signatures, social bookmarking sites, Ping services, — even viral content, joint ventures and pay per click in time once you develop a profitable sales funnel — but remember you don’t have to start off big from the start. It’s OK to start small, do a little each day and simply serve up excellent content that your readers will naturally want to share. Any good business can be self funding. Internet marketing is not like watching the paint dry. You have to take action!
3. Not forming strategic alliances from the start
   Don’t be a lone blogger. Team up with likeminded individuals and link to their blogs. Help other people to get traffic, comment on their posts and they in turn will do the same. This way you can build a network of related blogs and work together with people with similar aims and goals to you. Before you know it you will have a virtual army of bloggers commenting on your posts and recommending new posts to their followers. Helping others acheive what they want is the ultimate route to acheiving the things that you want.
4. Making your opt-in form too complex
   Your opt-in form should not resemble a passport application or tax return! If you want to get the maximum number of people to opt in to your newsletter don’t ask them for too many pieces of information. It makes it seem too daunting. Instead you should simply ask for their email and optionally their name. Make it look easy! Don’t ask people for a phone number unless absolutely necessary. The fewer bits of information they need to provide the more people you will have signing up. And as we all know the money is in the list. Always provide a link to a privacy policy next to any form that collects visitor information. Google LOVE a privacy policy! In fact it’s a necessity – even on a blog.
5. Not offering a valuable free gift
   Hands up! I’m guilty of this one at the moment but that is soon about to change. It’s been proven time and again that by offering a valuable free gift you will boost your response rate. A lot of bloggers in the internet marketing sphere offer a free bonus gift such as an eBook or a course but they only tell you about it after opting-in to their list. Big mistake! Make sure that you tell your potential subscribers about the gift BEFORE they decide to join your list. Your opt-in conversions will go through the roof when you find an appropriate free gift to offer.
6. Not having a professionally designed blog header
   Rather than using one of the free templates it really does pay to have a banner professionally designed by a graphics expert. You can find freelance graphic designers on sites such as the Digital Point Forum or oDesk (which I discovered recently and particularly recommend). Having a professionally designed header graphic on your blog makes you stand out as being different, unique and professional.
7. Not planning your site architecture in advance
   One of the top recommendations emerging recently from the world of SEO is to make a content page for every category on your blog. These are called “silo pages”. You use the silo pages to link to blog posts in that particular category. This not only makes it easier for your readers to find the content they want but it has been shown to help with search engine optimisation too. It’s best to do this now and start organising your site before it sprawls out of control. Google LOVE a well organised site!!!
8. Headlines that SUCK!!!!
   Never settle on the headline you first write. Always go back after writing the post and write a better headline. Sometimes I take the headline I originally wrote and write yet another post about that! You’ve got to accept that your mind is a limitless resource of content that your audience will find interesting. Be creative when you write your headlines and never be lazy! Master copywriters often write hundreds of possible headlines before they even think about which is best. Write first, then edit. This avoids wasting time with “self correction” and maximises the possible amount of useable content. Just type! Edit later.
9. Incorrect picture SEO
   Remember to name pictures with keywords relating to your post. Search engines can detect relationships between words and detect keyword relevence. If your post is about “10 ways Product X helps” and you have a product of “Product X” you should name your image product-x.jpg or product-x.gif. It’s simple but don’t underestimate it. You should name all unrelated images simply by numbers, ie. 1.jpg, 2.gif. This tip dramatically boosts keyword relevence and Google LOVE IT!!!
10. Not appearing friendly enough to your readers..
    Be thoughtful when selecting a photograph of you to use on your blog. I recommend if you can, select a photograph of yourself looking FRIENDLY. Above all friendliness is the best characteristic to portray. People may pick up on many aspects of your personality – either intended or unintended. Ask a few people who will give you an honest answer which photo of you looks the friendliest as use that. If you select a friendly image of yourself for the blog header and pictures in your posts and pages it will always reinforce the friendly conversational style of your blog. Position yourself as a friendly person and more people will want to opt-in to your newsletter and subscribe to your RSS Feed.

To check if you are currently in left or right brain mode simply notice which nostril you are breathing through. You will notice that you are breathing in more through one nostril than the other.

If you are breathing in mostly through your left nostril you are in right brain mode and the best tasks are creative and artistic tasks.

A newly developed augmented reality technology is now available that does not require any special downloads or camera tracking technology. Instead the viewer simply prints out a special image and holds it up infront of their webcam to see the 3D model visualisation on screen.

The augmented reality web app runs on any desktop or laptop computer with Macromedia Flash installed. Although it is unlikely to work with most mobile phones at present we are expecting more mobile phone manufacturers to add Flash capabilities to mobile devices in the future that will allow these types of augmented reality apps to run.

The result of holding up the special image infront of your webcam creates a “mixed reality” whereby you can move the 3D model on screen with your hands – without the need for any special 3D input devices. It’s amazing!

Firstly you can write articles or have them ghost-written at services such as ELance.com or Freelancer.com. Submit them to as many different article directories as you can. Put your name and website address in the resource box so that people reading the article can come back to your site.

The third and final step is to turn your article into a video. Simply use your camcorder or webcam to record yourself giving the same information as in the article and upload it to YouTube, DailyMotion, Viddler etc.

You can simply use the same content and put it in many places to generate a ton of traffic to your main site.

Make sure you do the keyword research using the free Google Keywords Tool to find the right keywords to put in the title of your pages, the headings, and throughout the body text so that your target customers find your information and visit your site.

More targeted traffic=more sales.
