<p>When we began publishing Early to Rise online in December of 1999, we didn’t have an e-mail list… we didn’t have products… we didn’t have much in the way of internal resources or a budget… and we weren’t even sure what our target market was.</p>
<p>Now, nine years later, we have figured all of that out… and much more.</p>
<p>Along the way, one of the best and most profitable marketing techniques we’ve employed has been <strong>joint ventures</strong> (JVs).</p>
<p><strong>Joint ventures may be the best way to stimulate growth when, for whatever reason, you have limited resources and skills that you are willing to devote to a particular channel of marketing</strong>. Joint venture marketing deals should be a part of the thinking of every executive who wants fast, impressive growth.<br />
<span id="more-211"></span><br />
Agora Inc. - ETR’s parent company - skyrocketed its growth by combining direct marketing on the Internet with multi-channel marketing. That happened in the late 1990s. But it wasn’t the first time Agora dabbled in multi-channel marketing.</p>
<p>Way back in the early 1980s, when the company was just starting out, it achieved fast growth by combining direct-mail advertising with joint venture marketing.</p>
<p>From about 1980 to 1995, for example, Agora grew its investment newsletter business from $1 million to $60 million, primarily through joint venture marketing deals. The proposition was pretty simple.</p>
<p>Agora was very good at <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.earlytorise.com/2000/11/06/10-things-you-should-know.html" target="_blank">direct-mail marketing</a> (, but its employees had very little investment expertise. Rather than attempt to develop financial gurus in-house, Agora went out into the media marketplace and found investment writers who had newsletters with a small number of subscribers.</p>
<p>Agora’s proposal to them was as follows: They would form a joint venture, with both sides as 50 percent partners. The partner would continue to own his subscribers and his editorial product, and would continue to have all the fulfillment obligations. The partner would hire Agora to act as his newsletter’s marketing agent. Agora would take all the risk with the marketing efforts and keep the revenue stream. The partner would get the new subscribers risk free. In turn, the partner had to ensure that the deal worked for Agora, as well.</p>
<p>For a financial writer with limited marketing resources, it was a no-risk, all-reward proposition &#8212; an impossible deal to refuse. For Agora, it was an efficient way to attract first-rate writing talent &#8212; some with established reputations and great track records. If Agora’s marketing worked, both partners would be very happy. If it failed to work, the joint venture could be dissolved, and both partners would then be free to go back to what they were doing before.</p>
<p>Agora used this joint venture strategy to develop more than a dozen newsletter franchises during the first 15 years of its existence. In that time, it saw revenues climb from $1 million to more than $60 million.</p>
<p>“<em>I don’t think we could have grown that much so quickly without these partnerships</em>,” Bill Bonner, Agora’s founder, said.</p>
<blockquote><p><em>They allowed us to market some of the best people in the investment advisory business then, which gave us an advantage our competitors lacked. As our company grew, we developed in-house editorial expertise. Most of our writers nowadays are employees or freelancers under contract. So we don’t use that kind of joint venture deal anymore. But we do employ joint venture agreements on the Internet marketing side &#8212; and these are proving very valuable in terms of growth.</em>”</p></blockquote>
<p>In 2001, Katie Yeakle, president of American Writers and Artists Inc. (AWAI), decided she wanted to sell her products in Germany. One option was to set up a branch office in Bonn and hire a local manager who would then hire translators and find service bureaus to publish AWAI’s products in that country. The other option was to locate a German publisher who was already marketing to the kind of customers AWAI favored and make a joint venture deal.</p>
<p>She chose the latter option. AWAI entered a joint venture with Germany’s largest direct-response publisher. Because the publisher already had an existing operation, they were able to take on the new project without adding extra personnel or office space. Costs were thus reduced. And profits were increased dramatically, because the publishing company was able to market to its own list of buyers. Perhaps most important, AWAI and its German partner could combine their skills and knowledge to take full advantage of the German market quickly, thus avoiding any concern that another enterprising business would fill the gap.</p>
<p>To make matters simple, the contract established AWAI as owner of its product line, established the publisher as the line’s sole marketer in German and Germany, and stipulated a fixed royalty (a percentage of the sales) for AWAI.</p>
<p>Had Katie decided to make a go of the German operation herself, AWAI might have made more money, since it would have kept 100 percent of the profits. But it would surely have taken many years and would have had a greater chance of failure. By going with a joint venture, the German business was up and running in less than a year, and was very profitable in less than two years.</p>
<p><strong>Joint Ventures Are Perfect for Start-Ups and Small Businesses</strong></p>
<p>Many small-business owners don’t like joint ventures. They don’t like the idea of splitting revenues. They like selling their own products because they get to keep 100 percent of the revenues.</p>
<p>This sort of thinking simply misses the mark. When a joint venture is executed properly, it doesn’t subtract from a business, it adds to it.</p>
<p>There are many ways to do joint ventures. But for a growing small business, the most lucrative type of joint venture usually involves at least two of three key elements: a product, a promotion, and a market.</p>
<p><a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.earlytorise.com/author/yanik-silver" target="_blank">Yanik Silver</a>, an Internet marketing specialist who regularly writes for Early to Rise, says that joint ventures have been “<em>very, very good</em>” to him. He suggests that small businesses should consider not only JV deals but also all the ways there are of selling products and making money that they aren’t already doing:</p>
<p>* <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.earlytorise.com/2008/06/13/7-ways-to-improve-your-ppc-campaign-2.html/" target="_blank">Pay-per-click</a> (PPC) advertising<br />
* Direct mail<br />
* Direct e-mail<br />
* Print advertising<br />
* Website advertising<br />
* Telemarketing<br />
* <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.earlytorise.com/2008/10/29/build-a-rock-solid-seo-foundation.html" target="_blank">Search engine optimization</a> (SEO)</p>
<p>One of the best ways to expand your marketing base is by adding on new marketing channels… and one of the fastest and most efficient ways of doing that is to form joint ventures with colleagues and competitors who have expertise that you lack.</p>
<p>Yanik talks about one information marketer who entered a joint venture with a telemarketer. He paid the telemarketer a large percentage of sales for events and other high-end products he was producing. This joint venture brought in millions of dollars in extra revenue, Yanik says. And it did so without “<em>the headache of babysitting and training a bunch of telemarketers.</em>”</p>
<p>Instead of hiring employees and running a mail shop himself, Yanik gets all his direct-mail marketing done on a joint venture basis. <em>“My partner does all the little things necessary to get a direct-mail piece out,</em>” he explains. <em>“He’s also a good copywriter, so he writes envelope teasers, lift notes, and so on, too. I pay him based on the results of each mailing. We are both in it together. If I do well, so does he.</em>”</p>
<p>One of the key secrets to joint ventures, Yanik says, is not to be greedy. “<em>I give all my partners a fair percentage of the sales they help me make. It has to be significant. I want them to be happy</em>.”</p>
<p>He also recommends getting the joint venture agreement in writing, “<em>even if you are best friends with your partner. Memories fail, but a simple written agreement (which could be nothing more than an e-mail outlining key points) will clarify any discrepancies or misunderstandings that might crop up in the future</em>.”</p>
<p><strong>Strategies for Successful Joint Ventures</strong></p>
<p>Joint venture marketing relationships can be extremely valuable. Every ambitious entrepreneur and marketing director should be open to them. Making them work, however, does take time and consume resources. And because you don’t have unlimited time and resources, it makes sense to be strategic in selecting your joint venture partners.</p>
<ul> • Look for strong partners - businesses that have significant skills and/or resources that you lack.   </p>
<p>• Make sure that your contribution to the deal is equal to your partner’s. An unbalanced partnership is not good for either party.</p>
<p>• Avoid partners you don’t trust.</p>
<p>• If possible, limit the scope of the venture in the beginning and extend it as trust increases.</p>
<p>• Make agreements simple, but put them in writing.</p>
<p>• To avoid costly misunderstandings after the venture has begun, identify the value of each partner’s contributions at the outset. These should include skills, intellectual resources, marketing resources, capital, and so on.</p>
<p>• In determining the value of those contributions, remember that fairness is not an exact number, but a range. Try to be flexible - and favor partners who demonstrate the same flexibility.</p>
<p>• Establish clear protocols at the beginning for amending or unwinding the relationship if it fails to meet expectations.</p>
<p>• Goodwill is essential for success. Goodwill means that you want your partner to benefit from the relationship as much as you do.</ul>
<p>The idea is to develop joint venture relationships that are easy to maintain, financially profitable, intellectually rewarding, and long-lasting. After a necessary period of negotiation and implementation, you want the relationship to grow well and quickly and painlessly.</p>
<p>If you pick a weak or untrustworthy partner, the joint venture will eventually fail. If your partner sees you as weak or untrustworthy, the venture will also fail. If, on the other hand, you develop a reputation for being a good, trustworthy partner, good people will come to you and be happy with the terms you suggest.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>It&#8217;s been quite some time since my last post here and even more since I host a guest writer. But I was really busy with my new product launch.</p>
<p>Anyway, here&#8217;s a great article&#8230;</p>
<p>Last night I had dinner with <strong>Joe Vitale</strong> and <strong>Pat O’brien</strong>.</p>
<p>Pat wrote &#8220;<strong>The Portable Empire</strong>&#8221; book published by Wiley Press. Joe has written 30 best sellers and, most recently, took his fame to another level by being featured in &#8220;<strong>The Secret</strong>.&#8221;<br />

<p>Joe’s one of those guys who could have an ego bigger than New York, but doesn’t. He’s one of brightest, most giving individuals you’ll meet. And puffs on a mean, Cuban cigar.</p>
<p>I won’t reveal his secret here.</p>
<p>But Joe has banged out 30 books and he literally can’t type! He hacks away at the keyboard. Joe turned his &#8220;cant’s&#8221; into &#8220;dones&#8221;. He didn’t let excuses stop him.</p>
<p>Pat used to be a blues musician. He toured Europe a lot and had a nice following.</p>
<p>But all that changed when he bartered guitar lessons with Joe Vitale in exchange for a ticket to his Spiritual Marketing seminar.</p>
<p>Pat got inspired.</p>
<p>In one weekend, he created his first product.</p>
<p>I tell people this all the time. Creating a product doesn’t need to take forever. <strong>99% of creating a product is in your head. It’s in the decision to do it.</strong></p>
<p>Pat sold more copies of his first product in a few days than he did CD’s all month long on his tours. And he could stay at home and not have the grind of travel.</p>
<p>So Pat got into this business.</p>
<p>Later, he penned his book Portable Empire that has been a big hit. He also holds &#8220;unseminar&#8221; seminars on marketing. Which are his own laid back version of seminars.</p>
<p>One of the things we did last night was brainstorm a new USP or big promise for Pat.</p>
<p>I explained to him that you can break sales letters down into direct and indirect leads or formulas, a tidbit I learned from Michael Masterson at awaionline.com.</p>
<p>Anyway, we figured a direct lead would be best for Pat. The two direct leads you use most often are problem/solution and big promise.</p>
<p>Neither Joe nor I really like or specialize in the problem/solution lead. So we use the big promise.</p>
<p>I reckon we spent 20 or 30 minutes noodling around, fishing for a big idea or promise for Pat’s product.</p>
<p>See, the concept of the portable empire is to create digital products and sell them over the Internet. But lots of people teach that. What I explained to Pat is that he needs to have a specific promise.</p>
<p>Then take that promise and carry it through his blog, boot tiles and everything else.</p>
<p>We finally came up with a pretty good idea for Pat.</p>
<p>So here you are.</p>
<p>If you’ve been following me, you’ve broken down your bills into daily amounts. You know you need to generate leads via ppc, seo or an affiliate program.</p>
<p>What’s all this talk ’bout Pat and Joe got to do with YOUR bills? Or what does it have to do with all this Twitter talk I’ve been dishin’ out?</p>
<p>TWITTER: This is how I reconnected with Pat and Joe. I’m met both a year ago at Pat’s UnSeminar. But we lost touch.</p>
<p>On Twitter, within a week, we reconnected. And that’s how we ended up doing dinner.</p>
<p>Here’s my <a href="http://www.marlonsnews.com/video/tweetdeck" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">video on Tweet Deck</a> if you haven’t seen it yet!</p>
<p>BILLS: I told in the story above how Pat created his first product in a weekend. And he sold more of it in a few days than he normally did CDs in a whole month of touring as a blues musician.</p>
<p><strong>What about YOU?</strong></p>
<p>If an ex blues musician can create a product in a weekend, don’t you think YOU might be able to?</p>
<p>And if you DO that, now what kind of impact do you think that’d have on you paying your bills?</p>
<p>Let’s say you sell your product for $50. And you sell one a week. That’s a $200 bill erased.</p>
<p>Let’s say that you promote affiliate products to the people who buy your main product. That might be another $50 or $100 a month there. So you erase another bill or two.</p>
<p>And what happens if instead of selling 2 a week, you sell one a day.</p>
<p>If you convert 1% of visitors to buyers, to sell one a day, you need 100 visitors a day.</p>
<p>If you were on my Ateam call last week, you know how to use Twitter to get a lot more than 100 visitors a day.</p>
<p>If you follow the system for converting leads to sales in rows 4 and 5 of <strong><a href="http://www.internetmarketingprofitscenter.com/promo-dashboard" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Promo Dashboard</a></strong>, you’ve got a good shot at turning 10% of your leads to sales.</p>
<p>That would mean you only need 10 or 20 visitors a day to get the sale a day.</p>
<p>Or, if you bid on keywords on Google that have LESS than 7 ads, you’ll get clicks for whatever the minimum bid is. With a great quality score, you can get clicks for a penny to a nickel. It’s possible. People do it. I won’t say getting a great QS on Google is easy.</p>
<p>It isn’t.</p>
<p>But it can be done if you focus on it.</p>
<p>At dinner last night, I told Joe I thought you could get good at about anything you put your mind to. He being big into the law of attraction and such agreed.</p>
<p>One of the things I noticed last night is that I kept bouncing around from idea to idea as I’m prone to do. Joe kept coming back to the point we were discussing.</p>
<p>Focus.</p>
<p>It’s why I created Ockham’s Razor. You can’t see, move and finish unless you focus. You can’t focus unless you simplify.</p>
<p>Once you simplify, you can document your systems and outsource to the Philippines as John Jonas teaches.</p>
<p>Or, if you only want to do the SEO Lies method, Justin Brooke can teach you how to outsource that.</p>
<p>Do you see how all this fits together? That’s why I call it <strong>Marlon’s Master Plan</strong>. It all fits together.</p>

<p>Now, nothing wrong with building your list to start and promoting affiliate products. Nothing wrong with that at all. But eventually you wanna fall in the &#8220;have&#8221; category.</p>
<p>It’s interesting to see the number of people coming back to my blog saying, &#8220;<em>Marlon, I strayed. I followed the bright shiny objects. I tried to take the easy route. But I’ve come back to your teachings and wish I’d never left.</em>&#8221;</p>

<p>Companies might also blog to help increase the amount of business on their web sites. For many bloggers, increasing traffic to their blogs is not the only goal.  </p>
<p>Most people that blog want to keep their visitors coming back for more. The following are <strong>four ways to keep visitors coming to your blog site</strong>.</p>

<p><strong>Blogging is a phenomenon</strong>: Some blog writes choose to keep their blogs personal and do not share their thoughts with others. These are more like online diaries. </p>
<p>Other wants to share with everyone what he or she has to say.</p>
<p>Blogging is a big business and many websites offer free blog hosting. In addition, many companies choose blogging as an inexpensive way to advertise their products or services.<br />

Blogging on the Internet is often much cheaper than maintaining a web site and is usually more interesting for readers and clients.</p>
<p><strong>Update your blog</strong>: The easiest way to keep visitors coming back toyour blog site is to update your blog on a regular basis.</p>
<p>Readers will stay loyal to blogs that are updated daily. Some blog writers even updated several times a day. Readers will tend to loose interest in your writing if they have to wait several days for new material.</p>
<p>Be loyal to your readers and your readers will be loyal to your blog. Also, there are literally thousands of blogs available on the Internet.</p>
<p>If your blog is not updated on a regular basis, you will loose your readers to another blog site.</p>
<p>Another fun way to update your blog and keep your readers interested in your site is to include something fun for your readers to enjoy.</p>
<p>That could be as simple as a joke or maybe a link to a humorous story you have found on the Internet. You might also try including a trivia game or polls for your readers to enjoy on a regular basis.</p>
<p><strong>Participate in web communities:</strong> Participating in web communities or discussion forums and mentioning your blog whenever possible will help keep readers coming back to your site.</p>
<p>In addition, you can gain new readers when doing this. You can also be loyal to the blogs of other writers and ask them to visit your site.</p>
<p>Leave nice comments about their site and invite them to your site. If you have mutual interests and the same type of readers, you can even share your blog links on your site.</p>
<p>This helps everyone. Your reader will appreciate interesting reading while you benefit from readers from the other site.</p>

<p>This does not mean that you have to write on only one particular subject, though.</p>
<p>If you are a stay at home mom and write about your life at home with the kids, your loyal readers may not appreciate it if you write about cutting edge topics or use a lot of foul language in your writing.</p>
<p>If you generally write humor, do not bog your readers down with sorrowful woes and tales. Your readers will be interested in the things that attracted them to your site in the first place.</p>
<p>That is usually what you are more interested in writing about.</p>
<p>You can gain a better understanding of your readers interested by including places for comments and encouraging your readers to contact you by email.</p>
<p><strong>Include keywords:</strong> You can gain readership and help keep your current readers by including certain keywords in your blog.  </p>
<p>If you have entered your blog on a search engine, these keywords that point to your blog will come up after a search. This is a great way to get readers interested in your blog.</p>
<p>This is also a good way for companies to increase the traffic to their blog.</p>
<p><strong>Final thought</strong>: blogging is increasingly popular for companies as well. If you want to make your blog stand out against the thousands of other blogs, keep your readers interested and coming back for more everyday by updating your writing, participate in online communities, understand your readers and include keywords.</p>

<p>The first thing to do, is e<strong>nsure that your site has a signup form</strong>. A signup form is an obvious way to use an autoresponder, <em>yet a lot of people don’t think about it</em>.  </p>

<p>His site, FitnessBlackBook, gets around 3000 unique visitors per day. Just one of his pages makes him over $300 per month. Other pages and posts more or less than that.</p>
<p>He attributes his success to the training and examples he’s gotten with Jack, the people he’s met because of his powerful presence and following in the fitness niche, and the content he puts up on his blog.</p>
<p>In this short interview he outlines how he is doing with his blog, what has made the difference for him in building the blog, and his plans for future growth. </p>
