Teenagers are being tricked into distributing this adware. It looks like a video software that can be put into your profile so people can view videos. When you put the code into your profile, viewers of your profile will see a popup to download the "video software" which is really adware. Mine does. My Gmail account has caught over 700 spam messages in the last 30 days, some in foreign languages in an account that I haven't used for a year. But what really catches my eye are the numerous Nigerian fraud emails. Here's an example of a Nigerian fraud email that I received (I pointed out in red the most interesting information):

------------------------------------------------

THE COMMERCIAL BANK OF SENEGAL (CBS)
Business Assistance/Investment Proposal
Dear Ceo/Manager,

In order to transfer out (US$30 Million) Thirty Million United States Dollars from CBS .I have picked-up the trust and courage to write you this letter with divine confidence that you are a reliable and honest person who will be capable for this important business transaction believing also that you will never let me down either now or in the future.

My name is DR; MOHAMED GUE, a senior Auditing Officer with the CBS Bank in Dakar Senegal. There is an account opened in this bank in 1993 and since 1999 nobody has operated on this account again. We don't know exactly when this article was researched but if it was researched close to the posting date, Mr. Victor Dada would have been alive in 2005, because he had given a quote. Thus, he had not died Oct 31st 1999 as the article suggests.

3. "I got your contact from an internet consultant here in Senegal"

"Internet Consultant" hmmmm...you mean an email "harvester" AKA, someone who goes around the internet looking for addresses to spam.

4."if I do not remit this money out urgently it would be forfeited for nothing" & "believing also that you will never let me down either now or in the future"

OK, so I've never met you and you think I will never let you down including right now.

Is it my problem that you don't know what to do with $ 30 million dollars and you look for people to help you launder it by means of spam?

5. "[1]. They have an interesting article on their website. Apparently the Postal Department of NY, destroys all Nigerian fraud letters they find. One of their statistics is that out of every 10 bags of mail that comes from Nigeria, 8 bags are scams.
But, how do spammers get our email addresses in the first place?
A spammer purchases an email list from someone who "harvested" or collected email addresses off of the internet.

Another factor in this growing problem, is spam at the workplace. Not Exactly. All three are malicious programs, but they differ in several ways.

A virus replicates itself and spreads into files and applications. When you run the application it infects other files. Some viruses only cause minor damage but some viruses could end up damaging your entire computer, files, hardware, and software. A virus cannot spread without human interaction. Viruses are most commonly sent through email or a download. When the virus spreads from computer to computer, it leaves a trail of infection. It is also possible that a virus is on your computer but hasn't infected it. Since most viruses are executable files, it is possible that the file hasn't been opened or run.

A worm is similar to a virus as it causes harm to your computer. A worm is distinguished by the way it spreads and its actions. A worm can spread without human interaction. Since they spread automatically, they can spread faster than viruses. They can replicate themselves and send a copy to everyone in your email address book, and then to everybody in their address book and so on. A worm won't harm your files but will slow down your computer by using up the memory and processor.

A trojan horse may be considered the trickiest of them all. It fools you into thinking it's a useful program that you want to download. But, when the program is running, the trojan horse creates a "back door" to your computer, allowing hackers to find personal and confidential information as well as destroy your files. A trojan horse can cause minor damage and/or serious damage. Trojan horses don't replicate themselves.

To protect yourself from these threats:
1. Make sure to update your operating system
2. Run anti-virus software and download updates on a regular basis
3. Install a firewall
4. Use caution while downloading attatchments and files off the internet

What to do if you're still running Windows 98, Me

This is an interesting article even if you don't have Windows 98 or Me. An IP address is a numeric address consisting of 4 numbers, from 0 to 255. An example IP address could look like this..."196.248.3.61". The numerical address represents a binary. A binary is simply "computer code" written in a series of zeros and ones. The reason why we most commonly refer to an IP address as 4 numbers and not a binary code is because 4 numbers are much easier to remember than a binary code. Webopedia gives a good example of the difference between a IP address and a binary code. "[T]he IP address 168.212.226.204 in binary form is 10101000.11010100.11100010.11001100."

Summarizing the paragraph above, an IP address is simply a way to identify a device communicating on a network. The security issue comes into play, when someone uses your IP address to find out personal information about you. It is very simple and easy to find out what ISP (AOL, Verizon, Comcast), operating system, browser, language, and encryption you have. It is equally simple to find your country, city and state. Many websites will show you this for free such as http://www.showipaddress.com/.
