Don’t Celebrate Just Yet

Free Wi-Fi can lead you into identity theft, loss of data or worse if you aren’t careful. Our airports, cafes, hotels etc. are peppered with free Wi-Fi connections. Most of us don’t think twice before we logon for our daily internet fix. There are no free lunches in this world and the internet is no different – by linking yourself to an open network you can potentially be setting yourself up for disaster. There are two ends of manipulation on a free network – your files could be tampered with by the person who originally setup the network with the intention of monitoring the users connecting to it, and someone else connecting to the network can also spy on you. Several pieces of activity can be tracked on an open Wi-Fi network.

Behind the scenes

An open Wi-Fi is a network that links you to a main computer and every other computer that finds its way to the network. If the owner wishes to check what you’re using their Wi-Fi connection for, all they need is a software like Wireshark or Firesheep to capture your browsing details. And these software are already present on the network long before you show up. Most sensitive data is encrypted only to the
extent of the sites that encrypt it. If you end up buying a book from an online site with an unencrypted form the likelihood is you’re handing over your bank details to a hacker without even knowing. So your bank’s site might keep the Wi-Fi spy from seeing your information, but that doesn’t mean that all other sites will. It would be a good idea to take another look at your shared files and check what you’re
making accessible to the network without realizing it – it could include your pictures, videos, documents and a whole host of other things.

As easy as ABC

Getting spyware on your laptop or pc is an easy task if the network owner knows what he’s doing. Just Watt, a Web engineer reported on his hotel’s free Wi-Fi and how it was altering each page that one would browse to ad banner space for advertisements that weren’t originally a part of the page, and potentially block an already existing advertisement on the page. Watt’s discovery also raises an interesting question – would you click on an advertisement thinking it to be part of a site like msn.com, yahoo.com or another credible page only to install a computer monitoring software on your system instead? There are no lengths too vast when a hacker wants access to certain data. Software such as PC Pandora 7.0 and Spector Pro 2011 are examples of software that can be installed in stealth mode on your system and you’d have to work really hard to trace them. Both software have an array of features where they can capture screen shots, record browsing activity, keystroke logs etc. And these software would continue to work long after you’ve let go of the Wi-Fi and moved on with your life.

Leave no door unopened

Some suggest VPNs as an alternative but we’re living in a world where even VPNs are being continually cracked, there’s no way a simple open Wi-Fi can leave anyone feeling secure. VPNs will provide some semblance of security, however, since they’re able to add another layer of encryption on the data. The best solution would be to invest in a cheap Wi-Fi that you can take along with you wherever you want.

AT&T AND Sprint both offer wireless cards that can come as cheap as five bucks and can last up to a month.

Let’s take Justin Bieber for example. Bieber, a Canadian teen star made famous by Usher and YouTube, has been mocked and targeted by Internet critics and bloggers all over the world. He’s been victimized everywhere, from YouTube (where millions of parody videos of his music videos are uploaded and viewed every day), to television (with shows like South Park and Saturday Night Live among others), to online blogs and forum sites (where you can find thousands of posters and photos about him). Everyone has something bad to say about Justin Bieber and I’d rather be selling laptops online than counting off all the “Bieber is gay” posters on Google images. But despite all the mockery, Bieber even takes the time to thank everyone for making him more famous by saying: “So I wake up today to almost 15 million on Facebook, over a billion views on YouTube and 6 million of the greatest fans on Earth on Twitter!”

So if Justin Bieber, at a very young age, gets this huge attention from a very condemning crowd, why wouldn’t Apple have it too? Apparently, the biggest tech company in the world has been so mocked by every self-righteous Alpha Geek in the world that it’s starting to flood the net with parody blogs and videos passed off as tech news. One of these is about selling used laptops to get a Mac laptop (the ‘Get
a Mac’ ads featuring Justin Long of He’s Just Not That Into You). Here are the best of the ad parodies about the Mac laptops.

The ‘Get a Mac’ Ads

Probably the most famous Mac laptops and computers commercial that Apple has ever released is the ‘Get a Mac’ ad campaign. Remember the “Hi, I’m a Mac! Hi, I’m a PC!” commercials that symbolically tell you to say: “I want to sell my laptop coz it’s a Windows”? It lasted for four years (from 2006 to 2009), has released 66 commercials all in all, went viral and was released in three different countries (North America, United Kingdom and Japan). Actually, the 66 ads were only the North American versions of it. There are 16 Flash ads exclusively for website campaign, 15 for the U.K. versions and 12 for the Japan versions and 4 other ads made exclusively for Steve Jobs’ keynote speeches. The result? An overflowing amount of parodies from, not only PC and Mac users, but also from various respectable (read: respectable) institutions such as T-Mobile USA (versus AT&T), Marvel comics (versus DC comics), the Canadian Liberal party (versus the Progressive Conservative party), and Nintendo’s Wii game console (versus Sony’s PSP). The best one perhaps is Novell’s PC versus Mac versus Linux ad parodies.

The MacBook Air Ads

Who says only YouTubers get to do parodies of Mac’s laptop? Even competitor laptops are leveraging their marketing efforts by making a fool out of the MacBook Air. Lenovo, for instance, slammed Mac’s MacBook Air ‘manila envelope’ commercial by recreating the scene where a hand opens an envelope and out comes a very thin MacBook (that fits the envelope like a paper). What would make you trade in laptop for cash in the ad parody is when the hand adds an external optical drive, lots of USB slots and other peripherals that are not included in the MacBook Air and tries to push all of it in the envelope (which ruins the paper envelope). Then the hand opens another manila envelope and out comes the Lenovo X300 (which is also very thin and fits the envelope perfectly, like paper) and it simply boots the laptop implying that the real ‘ultra-thin’ laptop is the Lenovo!

Apple is certainly a valuable brand, and their products, valuable too. The amount of attention it gets is one reason it gets these parodies. I bet more will come in the future!

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and the primary rate interface (PRI) services that come with the infrastructure have given offices many different options when it comes to real time digital communications. Some of the features of these services can be integrated into an office so that problems are more quickly solved and communications become more efficient and cost-effective. These ways to maximize real time communications in the office can rely on intrinsic features of the technology or they can involve carefully chosen suites of applications that work together.

Session initiation protocol (SIP) forking is a feature of many business VoIP services. SIP forking allows a single digital channel to be forwarded to multiple destinations. This can be used to send a call from a single phone to multiple other devices. If an employee is not at a particular station to answer a phone, then the signal can be forked to a cell phone or another location until the employee receives the call. This can increase efficiency and prevent situations where a critical employee cannot be contacted.

One of the benefits of real time communications through digital lines and PRI services is the support for seamless collaboration across any geographical distance. This ability can be leveraged through careful selection of software applications to give satellite offices the ability to directly communicate with each other and the central office. The digital aspect of the services means that documents, files and other data can be transferred securely along the same channels.

The number of incoming channels that a business can have is able to scale upwards as needed. These lines can be used to create well-managed agent pools that can create a better customer experience as well as a more efficient and cost-effective office. Agent pools allow an internal or external call to reach a bank of employees who have the required skills to immediately resolve an issue. These pools can be designed so that calls to a help desk are answered immediately or they can be used to separate different customer service skillsets so more highly trained employees are not occupied with calls that can be answered by others.

Digital lines and SIP forking can be combined to provide powerful front-end services for employees and for clients who contact the office. Voice recognition programs can be combined with text-to-speech services in order to provide a seamless real time experience that can keep employees free to perform other necessary work.

These options can all be used across a variety of industries to maximize real time communications between employees and with clients outside of the business. New technologies, increases in bandwidth and innovative new service plans will inevitably provide even more options for businesses that are using VoIP lines in the office.

The PC world has grown into gigantic proportions. Computers have evolved at a lightning pace and have developed into super-fast and highly-intelligent machines. And yet, the average user is confounded and confused by so many things that keep happening on a daily basis with his/her PC. That is totally understandable given the fact that everyone making use of the PC is not a techie or a geek. However, the answers to these so-called techie mysteries are quite simple and straight-forward. Here is a brief compilation of the most sought-after mysteries and questions with their solutions.

1. Why does a PC making grinding sounds?

Ans: There are many reasons for this and all of them augur bad news! The simplest reason could be the fan in the CPU is spinning off the kilter. The most common reason is that your hard drive is about to die. It would be good to back-up your drives immediately when you hear these sounds.

2. Why are some programs already running when the PC is started?

Ans: When you boot up your computer, a list of programs called start-up programs start executing because they are beneficial and necessary for the proper running and good health of the system. eg. anti-virus utilities. However, many programs that you install manually also include the 'running at start-up' option that one often misses. This can be disabled and Windows speeded by running MSCONFIG and disabling start-up programs.

3. How come some files cannot be deleted by Windows?

Ans: If Windows says that it cannot delete a file or modify it in any manner, it only means that some application is accessing it in the background. Exit all applications and then delete or modify the file.

4. At times, Windows reboots without permission. Why?

Ans: This totally depends on what configuration settings you have applied when it comes to Windows Updates. You can manually change it to a setting such that updates are installed only after you permit at a time when you permit. Windows will need to restart after the updates are made.

5. What to do if the PC begins to behave erratically after updating hardware drivers?

Ans: It is usually an excellent practice to download the latest available drivers. However, at times, a few delivered drivers may be the beta version and have a few bugs. This is what causes the erratic behavior. Roll back to a previous version or locate and uninstall the problematic driver.

6. Where are my downloaded files?

Ans: By default, all downloaded files go to a folder named 'Downloads' in the primary hard drive. However, this location can be controlled from the browser.

7. Why are some files hidden from view in the system?

Ans: Critical system files without which the system will crash are kept hidden by Windows. This is to prevent the untrained and unwary user from modifying or deleting them. One should not tamper with these hidden files. However, by visiting the folder options in the tools tab of the explorer, these hidden files can be revealed.

8. A video plays on the PC but not on the laptop (or vice versa). Why?

Ans: each video format needs a specific decoder to work. If this is not present then that video will not play. Ensure that you have the correct decoder on your machine.

9. What is the meaning of the beeps heard when the system is turned on?

Ans: The beeps that are heard are made by the software built into the motherboard of the computer - BIOS. These beeps are actually codes which have meaning for the troubleshooter. So, if you hear anything other than the single, happy beep at the beginning, it is time to get the machine checked.

10. Why are some USB ports painted in blue?

Ans: The bright blue ports are USB 3.0 ports which are newer and thus, faster than the USB 2.0 ports. The actual color may vary depending on the manufacturer of the motherboard.

11. I have uninstalled a few programs but their folders still reside on the hard drive. What should I do?

Ans: The uninstallers that come along with many programs are ineffective. The programs concentrate only on the successful installation for that is where their interests lie. The solution would be to make use of some utility like the free IOBit Uninstaller to ensure that there is no residue.

12. Why cannot docx files be opened on a PC though Microsoft Word is installed?

Ans: If an old PC with Microsoft Word 2003 or any previous version is being used, the new Microsoft Office compatibility pack will have to be obtained. Another workaround would be to open the file in the browser, copy the contents and paste them manually into a new Word document that you have opened.

13. How should I get back the Recycle Bin that has disappeared?

Ans: In Windows 7 and Windows Vista, go to Start and type 'desktop icons'. The click 'Show' and check the box next to the Recycle Bin. In For older versions of Windows, Microsoft Support has released a troubleshooter called Fix-It which can be freely downloaded.

14. Is updating Windows essential?

It is definitely essential to remain secure and up-to-date. However, the settings can be changed so that Windows does not become nagging and forceful on a regular basis. The frequency of updating can be manually set.

15. What is the use of the 'sticky' keys?

Ans: Many functions in Windows require multiple keys to be pressed down - Ctrl + C, Ctrl + Alt + Del and so on. For various reasons when one is not able to simultaneously hold down multiple keys, the sticky keys option can be used. Now, the keys can be pressed one after another in quick succession i.e. they 'stick' for a while after pressing them.

The list of such 'mysteries' can go on. As Windows gets more and more advanced, it is natural that some aspects will confuse the users. However, this is not anything big to worry about. Solace can be found in the fact that solutions to most of these problems are simple. The best thing would be to type the problem via an online search. There will surely be many listed solutions.

Internet has become a successful medium of earning income by selling goods online. When sale is involved, marketing comes in evidently. So if you have a website where you are selling some goods of your own or someone else’s then you must be adopt a good marketing strategy so that many people visit your website and see the products you have to offer them. Unless they know about what products or what discount schemes you are offering to them, they will not be able to purchase goods from your website. Generating organic traffic is very important for anyone who is selling through websites. To generate such traffic, link building is the method which can yield positive impact.

What is Organic traffic

Organic traffic is the type of traffic which is resulted without any paid links, or clicks. When users give a search to any search engine like Google, the search results are displayed and after that when the user clicks on a relevant link, then this process is said to generate organic traffic for that website.

Optimize Your Website for Search Engine

For making your website search engine friendly, you have to make sure that the Meta keywords are set properly. It is a very important step while looking for organic traffic as you wish that your website should be found by the search engine easily and above that it must be listed within first two pages of search results. This is because not many people go beyond second page of search results as they find that results appearing from third page and after are less relevant to search
phrase.

In this article let’s discuss some of the way by which link building can be achieved.

1. Directory Submission

The very first way to generate organic traffic is to find a directory on any of the blogs those are updated for the related topics. This will surely propagate the market and you will get good results in terms of increased traffic in the organic form.

2. Video Promotion

People love to watch videos so you can create some promotional or informative videos and upload them on YouTube or any other video sharing websites. These videos and its description ust contain back links to your website so that it can generate lots of traffic to your website.

3. Social Networking

You can also create a photo album n your website and ask people to upload their photos to it. On the other hand, you can also join some website which are meant for photo sharing and upload your stuff with back links to your website.

4. Forum Posting

There are many active forums and question/answer type website such as Yahoo! Answers. You can join such websites and try to response to the topics along with links to your website with some interesting words like “read more” or “know more”. People reading to your answers will find such thing exciting and will click on the link.

5. Guest Posting

Use viral kind of approach for marketing your website. You can write some interesting stuff for a new blog or forum website and ask them for adding your link on every page where your article or topic is posted. This helps a lot as their visitors becomes your potential traffic.

Summary- generating organic traffic is the most economical way of achieving good number of visitors to your website. It can enormously help you to earn handsome income by selling products or services through a website.

It is a fact that nowadays smartphones have become the perfect medium for abusing, threatening, sending adult messages, exchanging company secrets, and hacking confidential data. So, in case you suspect that your child, spouse, employee, or a colleague has become a victim of any of these threats; there is a silent solution to help them! With the advanced technology for mobile security, you too can become a detective or an investigator just like an FBI or CID agent to keep a non-stop eye on the target smartphone irrespective of yours and device’s location. In this article, you will be introduced to a smart spy application with which you can easily become a remote detective.

Introduction to the Smart Spy App

It is Mobile Spy, the next generation spy program that allows you to track the smartphone of a suspected kid, spouse, or employee to record any evidence of abuse or threat. The app monitors SMSs, calls, photos, videos, GPS location, emails, sites, and contacts list.

All you have to do is download and install this app directly on any target smartphones. This is the only time when you need to get the physical access to the smartphone. Once you install it, it begins to start recording all possible activities without intimating the user. This means it runs in an invisible mode, which is actually the beauty of this advanced mobile monitoring app.

According to the New York Times, cell phone spyware promises to see activity without the knowledge of the child. Even the famous tech site PC World has commented on this app: Observe what your employees are messaging or how long your daughter chats down the street.

Features of the Mobile Spy

Listed below are the major features of Mobile Spy, which make the app one of the most powerful monitoring tools.

Real-time monitoring in 100% invisible mode

Recording of SMS text messages, Facebook and Twitter messages, sites visited, and call details

Tracking of photos and videos, whether downloaded or captured from the phone’s camera

Monitoring memos, emails, contacts, iMessage, and WhatsApp

Updating GPS locations every half an hour

Logging all the information and uploading to a remote secured server

Offering LIVE Screen with LIVE Panel Account to view the phone’s screen live irrespective of its location and block suspected activities remotely

Blocking apps on the phone

Working of Mobile Spy

Once you have installed Mobile Spy on the phone, the app will then work in the following manner.

1. Records all the phone activities, including the GPS location.
2. Creates logs for each kind of information.
3. Encrypts and upload the logs using the Internet connection to a remote SSL-secured
Mobile Spy servers

You can then log on to your online Mobile Spy account from any browser and view all the latest logs that are available in a well organized manner. By logging, you get access to the LIVE Control Panel where you can keep on receiving the activities performed throughout the day. In addition, you can also access the phone’s screen in real time to remotely control the phone activities. For example, you can use this live screen feature to see what is currently happening on the smartphone. If you suspect anything risky, you can certainly block that activity.

The app is available for iPhone, Android, Symbian, BlackBerry, and Windows Mobile platforms.

If you have played with Windows 8 preview, you know that it could change the way people think about PC. Microsoft has attempted to combine rich functionality with extra security by still maintaining the convenience and simplicity. Most importantly, Windows 8 comes with added security with some interesting changes that will change the face of windows security. Here is a list of security features that you can notice in Windows 8.

1. Built-in Antivirus:

The first security feature that you will clearly notice is Windows Defender. Any complete security solution should have all vital components like virus detection, network intrusion protection, protection from behavior-based threats, and protection from other types of malware attacks. In previous versions, Microsoft offered minimal protection with Defender. Now, Microsoft has decided to include features of
its Security Essentials to Windows Defender. This means you will find a completely revamped Defender that has all components of a complete security solution that can give you out-of-the box protection along with firewall and parental controls without any need for installing additional antivirus software.

Does it mean users needn’t have to bother about real time threats and completely stay away from buying third party security products? The test analysis done on Windows 8 Developer preview build shows that Windows Defender failed to block almost 20% of threats and its performance was quite slower than third party security products. From users’ perspective, having a complete security solution along with Windows is certainly beneficial for them, but we need to wait and see whether Windows Defender is capable of giving full-fledged robust performance like third party security software.

2. Protection against malware applications:

Internet Explorer 9 has SmartScreen filter to detect and block malicious programs that you download from internet. This feature has also helped to block phishing sites. With Windows 8, this feature comes built-in with the operating system itself. So now, any malicious programs will be blocked irrespective of whether you use Chrome, Opera, or any other browser. The feature works by checking the downloaded
program against a list of safe applications, and alerts you in case it has the potential to be a malware. This is definitely an improvement as it cuts down the number of unnecessary alerts as it used to show earlier. Now, with Windows 8, you will see a warning only when something is wrong.

3. Enhanced password protection:

Windows 8 allows you to create a four-digit pin and a picture password apart from having a regular password. Since the Developer preview, users have found that picture password is a convenient alternative to text-based passwords. The picture passwords work like this. You choose a photo to unlock your system and then define touch gestures to be used to unlock the system. Initially, users were skeptical because the smudges on the screen could be used be used by anyone to crack the password.

But, Microsoft has stated that the order, direction and location of gestures are also considered while storing the password, so cracking a picture password on a screen that is used regularly won’t be that easy. For instance, if you have a photo with group of people then randomly circle on someone’s face, and then draw some lines. Would that be easy to crack? If you are still skeptical, you can check Microsoft blog for complex mathematical calculations to prove that picture passwords are safer than
other methods. Additionally, Windows 8 also has four-digit pin password for added protection.

4. Secure Boot:

In spite of having anti-malware technology, almost all PCs remain vulnerable to security attacks. A particularly dangerous type of threat includes malicious programs that could overwrite the contents of kernel of an operating system, and once an operating system is compromised, then no application can be trusted. Now, with Windows 8, Microsoft addresses this problem using secure boot architecture with
Unified Extensible Firmware Interface, Early launch Anti-Malware Driver, and Remote attestation.

a. Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI):

Windows 8 will fully adopt a computer security architecture called Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI), developed by Intel. In a boot chain, UEFI makes certain that every module is signed and verifies the signature of the following module before it is allowed to execute. One of the major problem with UEFI is it doesn’t allow untrusted modules to be loaded even if they are part of a multi-boot
configuration. This means UEFI cannot be used on machines that host another OS such as Linux. So users will not have the ability to dual or multi-boot a system with Windows 8 and other operating systems that do not support UEFI.

An alternative is, instead of going for dual-boot system, you can have Linux in a virtual machine and continue to use Windows 8, but that depends on for what purpose you use Linux. Apart from this, UEFI is definitely advantageous as it brings the confidence that rootkit will not be able to tamper the kernel of Windows operating system.

b. Early Load Anti-Malware Driver (ELAM):

With UEFI architecture, the operating system images can be verified, but the trust does not cover critical boot drivers that are essential for starting a system. Windows 8 tackles this by introducing ELAM drivers in the load sequence. To protect against malicious boot drivers, the ELAM driver will be the first non-Microsoft module to get control during a boot sequence, and it will be consulted for every boot driver to be verified and loaded. Finally, ELAM driver will exit after loading all necessary boot drivers. Given that ELAM runs in restricted mode, this will definitely improve security and prevent malware drivers from loading. But daily hundreds of unique threats are coming up, so how much time will be spent on ELAM and how will the boot time performance be affected.

c. Remote Attestation:

This is another layer of boot time protection offered by Windows 8 to ensure that a system is not compromised. To make use of this feature, Windows 8 will have a Trusted Platform Module (TPM), which will record the loaded modules that cannot be modified by any software. This measurement will be kept in a log that will be retrieved remotely and verified. Even though this process is not new,

Windows 8 extends this process all the way down to kernel level. So any discrepancies during the boot sequence will be caught remotely.

These enhanced security measures could put third party security vendors out of business, but only time will tell whether Windows 8 security is tough enough to defend against all types of real time threats and malwares.

When moving to a new office, you have a lot to plan. Not only are you boxing up your belongings, you need to move the furniture and computers. With some patience and a plan, you can successfully move your old office to a new office easily and quickly.

If you have old office furniture and don’t want to bring it to the new office, then consider selling it or placing it in storage. If you think you may want to use that old desk again, then wrap in nicely in storage wrap and store it in a storage unit. If you don’t want to use that bookshelf in your new office but it cost you a lot of money and you’ll never find one like it again, move it to storage. A small storage unit for office furniture can be purchased for under $100 a month.

Moving computers can be done if you take the proper steps. Don’t just toss computers into a box for the move. First, turn off all computer equipment and unplug them. Wait until the computers have cooled down before doing anything else.

If you are moving a laptop, then place it securely into a padded laptop bag. Add the cords and separate drives in the bag as well. Label the outside of the bag so you know what is in it. During the move, you may forget that you placed the USB cord in the bag and the label will help you remember.

For other computers, remove the hard drives first and then place the hard drives securely in a padded envelope or small padded box. Wrap the computer in bubble wrap. Make sure all the cords have been removed from the back of the computer. Wrap the cords neatly around the palm of your hand and your elbow to create a nice circle. Then place the cords into a small box.

Don’t forget your computer accessories such as cards, flash drives, your mouse and mouse pad. Securely place these items in a small box. Label all the boxes with a white label and black marker. Also add a label to each box that says “office” so you know that this is office equipment. When the boxes arrive at the new place, then they can be taken and placed in the office for unpacking later on.

Once you unpack, place everything across the floor and review each item. Make sure there is nothing missing before you set up your new office. Remember, when you plug your computer in at the new office to make sure it is off. Once it’s plugged in then you are ready to turn on the computer and get back to work.

Every admin knows the importance of good patch management, but not every admin knows the tips and tricks that make for a great patch management strategy. There is so much more to patching than just running Windows Updates, and in this article we’ll share with you the nine tips for great patch management to prevent your network from having vulnerabilities.

1. Stay informed

You can’t fix it if you don’t know it’s broken, so staying informed is the right place to start. Subscribe to the security and patch bulletins from your operating system vendors and your critical application vendors. You really want to consider subscribing to a third party alert like the ones offered by SANS, Bugtraq, or others so you are aware of vulnerabilities even when there aren’t patches yet, and also to cover the smaller but no less important applications that are on your network.

2. Test your patches

I’d rather deploy an untested patch than not patch at all, but I’d really prefer to test all patches first. Whether you use a full-fledged QA environment, your DR/BCP (Disaster Recovery/ Business Continuity Plan) infrastructure, a scaled down lab running on virtualization, or just a subset of your workstations and servers, test all patches before you deploy them across the board. You want to fix problems, not
introduce new ones, and you never know when one vendor’s patch might conflict with another vendor’s app.

3. Have a regular maintenance window

Patching is critical and should not take a backseat to other activities unless absolutely necessary. By establishing and sticking to a regular monthly maintenance window, the rest of the business can plan around patching so you won’t have to worry about a business impact when patching is required. Just reserve the right to deploy emergency security patches outside that window in case a zero-day exploit is
in the wild.

4. Patch applications

This is where using a good patch management application becomes absolutely essential. Keeping up with all the third party applications installed on your servers and workstations will make manually patching those impossible, and there are new exploits for PDF readers and Flash players almost every month. Those are probably on every workstation you have, but are just the tip of the iceberg. You
probably have every admin’s favorite text editor installed on half your servers, protocol analyzers and compression tools…just because users don’t log onto it doesn’t mean you don’t have to worry about applications installed on a server.

5. Have a rollback plan

Even the best testing plan cannot cover every possible scenario and conceivable combination of other apps, specific configuration settings, and other variables, so make sure you have a way to roll back any patches you do deploy. Again, a patch management application can be a real lifesaver here by being able to install as easily as it installs any updates.

6. Use management-supported policy to ensure compliance

Patching shouldn’t be optional. Senior management must support and promote patching as an expected and required part of network management, and make it clear to all admins that it is not an optional activity.

7. Use logging and reporting to confirm compliance

Patch management applications log all their activities and can generate reports on a schedule or on demand to report on the status of the systems on your network. Use these reports to provide information to management, and also to verify that all systems on your network are up-to-date and in compliance with your patching policy.

8. Investigate discrepancies

If a report indicates that a system missed a patch, investigate it. Determine why the patch failed, and either resolve that issue, or manually apply the patch as appropriate. A good patch management application can do the heavy lifting for you, but it doesn’t mean you don’t have to do anything at all. Go a step further by spot checking systems with a vulnerability scanner to make sure you aren’t missing
anything.

Use these nine tips to help ensure you have the best, most effective patching solution which requires minimal effort from your IT admin.

Shared web hosting is a source where multiple websites share the resources and space of a web hosting server, keeping website partitioned from each other while creating a secure environment for multiple sites. The Web hosting company charges variates in accordance with the space and bandwidth requirements of client, as each site operate on its own space and bandwidth. When one purchase/ hire a shared web hosting, domain name is included and added to server which enables to develop / upload website and allows getting it online.

As a general rule, it is a good feasible idea, to go for shared web hosting specially when in small business scale with limited sources and budget. Before making any hosting decision, the concept of shared web hosting and it’s all pros and cones must be kept in mind.

Pros of Shared Web Hosting

The main advantage of shared web hosting is that you are free from worries, to up-keep of complicated server technology and proper technical maintenance. That’s the whole purpose of the web hosting companies. Web hosting professionals stands responsible for all server and other problems as bound to keep site functional. As server load can be optimized so that busy websites are coupled with less busy websites which result in a steady server load keeping cost effective. This results in less need for extra processing power during peak hours, and unused processing power during off-peak hours.

It is affordable, probably the best thing about shared web hosting as compared to dedicated hosting. Nearly 90-percent of small websites utilizing shared web hosting serves as it is economical and affordable and also does not include any complex Linux management skills.

All shared web hosting suppliers provide facilities in the shape of friendly web-
based control panel, which allows them to upload content to their respective sites easily, enabling to create accounts, emails, and database.

Shared hosting is very easy and convenient to use because many companies provide with cPanel , which enables you to keep strong hold and control upon all features of site.

Cones of Shared Web Hosting

The major problem in shared hosting services is the inadequate resources at dumping. Sharing a server is absolutely no problem, but sharing the system assets with many other users on a single physical machine (server), and as a result each user obtains more limiting service.

In case any of the users in a shared web hosting service consume a huge amount of traffic, email capabilities, or CPU power, then the other users on the same physical server most likely to experience the worstt shared web hosting performance.

Another main downside is not being able to set-up programs and modules on the common server that you require in order to run your personal website and related scripts.

Moreover, there are extremely great chances of getting hacked, and your website being compromised in case any of the websites on shared server get infected with a malware. Consequently, even if there are no security loop-holes in your website, you may have to bear adverse consequences because of hosting on a shared server.

Before taking final decision to link a deal on shared web hosting, consider seriously all the pros and cons of shared web hosting .A right web hosting selection is one of the most critical decisions for your online business.

It is sure that in next genration war field, cyber attacks will be one of the important weapon to beat the enemy. It is believed that many countries have enough technological strength to attack the control networks of critical units like power, transport etc via Internet. As long as any network is connected to the public Internet it is prone to attack. However, due to various reasons it is not practical to keep all critical networks isolated from the rest of the world. Intel knows it better than anyone so it started a joined venture with its subsidiary McAfee to create a new blueprint to protect critical networks and infrastructures from any kind of cyber attacks.

Right now they are planing to protect energy utility ecosystem from external cyber attacks. If enemy can access and control energy networks, it will be a great advantage for them. Thats why Intel and McAfee plan to develop a working protection layer for critical infrastructres.

Their plan includes :

1. Improve the options for remote device management

2. Improve the Uptime

3. speeding up response times to attacks

In addition to these steps they will implement multi-layer security platform to ensure the safety of the critical infrastructures.

This is a supporting tutorial for my main articles where most of the time we provide steps like remove the temp files, cache, prefect etc as a part of troubleshooting procedure. In order to avoid writing the same steps again and again in every guides, I prefer to write a detailed guide on removal of temporary files and cache files from Windows computer. Please note that many recommends to delete the below listed files in safe mode for the perfect completion of the task but we can do the same in normal mode too.

How to Clear Temp files in Windows 7 Computer

In order to clear temporary files in Windows 7 computer follow the steps below.

1. Click on Windows Start

2. Click on Run

3. Type temp on Run and press enter

4. Delete files listed

5. Again type %temp% on Run and press enter

6. Delete files listed here

Please note that the files currently under use cannot be deleted and may show an error message.

Empty Prefect Folder

Prefetch folder contain files which tell how the software installed in your computer works. Normally you do not need to delete files in this folder. In case if you want to delete files in prefect folder follow the steps below.

1. Click on Windows Start

2. Click on Run

3. Type prefetch and press enter

4. Delete the files

Today’s smartphones, such as the ones available at Dialaphone, are being used for a variety of real world applications. Businesses and organizations are seeing how they can capitalize on the availability of this technology and make it applicable for their needs. Given the portability of mobile devices, it is easy to understand the pull towards the use of these devices. Recently, the iPhone has been given a new task. Passengers riding on the American train system, Amtrak, will begin seeing employees using iPhones. The iPhones have been repurposed to be used as ticket scanners. They can also be used to print tickets as well. Prior to the adoption of the iPhone system, Amtrak was still using an archaic hole punch system that was difficult to monitor. In fact, now, the incidence of errors should be significantly reduced.

According to the company, the initial pilot of the program for a few routes was so successful, that the use of the iPhone will be expanding for use by over 1,700 conductors. Given this new technology it is possible that customers can board a train without a paper ticket. The iPhones are able to scan codes from mobile devices or laptops, which makes travel much more efficient and environmentally friendly.

The iPhones used by the Amtrak conductors have been equipped with special scanners made specifically for this purpose. The company also has had their own app created to complete the scanning tasks. The app also performs other functions including alerting staff if a passenger is in need of assistance due to a physical disability. The system can also be used to relay maintenance requests to mechanics.

The use of this system also makes the process of modifying tickets more efficient as well. No need to wait in lines to perform the task physically. This system developed by Amtrak is only for use on the iPhone.

This is a guest post by Samantha about Amtrak’s Use of the iPhone as a Ticket Scanner. If you like to write guest posts for us please follow the instructions provided in the link below.

Today while moderating the pending comments in my blog, after pressing Publish or delete, it takes a lot of time saying saving and last an error message appears. This error message says "We're sorry, but we were unable to complete your request.... ". At the end of the error message there is an error code something like "bX-oef----" and they recommend to provide this error code when I report this issue to the support. I see this bX error code after upgraded to the new blogger interface as per the suggestion displayed in my blogger dashboard. The error message looks like the one provided below.

After searching for this bX error message I found Blogger already aware of this issue and they are on the way to find the reason behind this error message. Blogger says some of their users see this bX error while commenting on blogger blogs. What blogger suggests is to report this error in Blogger support group with the exact error code you received.
An announcement that was leaked from Adobe had people reeling over the news that the company will now be abandoning its Flash project for mobile phones. Since Adobe has long been struggling to improve their performance, it is not a big surprise for many critics especially since HTML5 is starting to gain popularity.

Adobe’s announcement stated that their work with Flash through mobile phones in the future would be to enable Flash developers to program native apps using Adobe AIR in all the major app stores. No longer will they adapt the Flash Player for the mobile devices to new OS versions, device configurations and browsers.

The company will be refocusing its efforts instead on desktop content and mobile apps as well as contribute to HTML5. Adobe saw great opportunity for HTML5. Aside from that, they saw some reasons why they have changed their route regarding mobile Flash.

Results were not impressive.

When the project on Flash launched, it did not go quite as expected. While some people commented that the mobile video quality was acceptable, others were expecting more from the app.

Support was lacking.

The infamous letter of Steve Jobs “Thoughts on Flash” which was posted in 2010 was a major blow to the company. One of its most vocal critics, of course Apple, boycotted the app to run in any of its devices.

There was even an Adobe product manager who hinted that the lack of support by Apple was influential for its release. He said that just because Adobe let go of their Flash project does not mean that it was a bad technology project from the start. The manager quoted that the product would become irrelevant if it was not allowed to run, prompting Adobe to find other ways to meet the needs of their high speed Internet customers.

There is growing support for HTML5.

In the coming years, it is expected that browsers with HTML5 support will be gaining huge grounds. Even ABI Research stated in its data that mobile phones with HTML5 browsers are going to go up to 2.1 billion by 2016. Many high profile mobile sites and applications have been making huge shifts in their support from Flash to HTML5, and it continues to grow. Amazon Kindle, Youtube, Twitter and Pandora are some that are making the switch nowadays.

This is a guest article by Peter Cruz about why Flash failed to work for Mobile Phones. To read rules to write guest article for us, please follow the link below.

Write Guest articles for us

Top Security Topics Regarding Cloud Computing

In the modern scenario lots of the interaction tools have developed thus the computing has also changed with the time. The cloud computing Is the new addition in that scenario. Here the end user will get the cloud base access on applications via browser. The providers always strive to provide the similar or better services with enhanced performance as the software is installed locally at the end user desktop.

It is the broader concept as it is seem. This kind of software and data centre allows the applications to work faster without difficulty in managing and low maintenance. It is more useful for the IT resources as to meet the unpredictable and un expected demands of the IT business.

Cloud security

It is the secure set of protocols and technologies which protect the data stored with their integrity in computing. It’s not the same as the traditional security system for the computers. It gives emphasis on the issues regarding the privacy and management of them.

Understanding the cloud computing risks and issues

As we know it’s the broader concept and thus it comes up with the issues and the risks involved as well. The little knowledge and not understanding the cloud computing system is the major hindrance in getting adopted. This part will help the IT mangers to compare the risk with the latest information on its standards as they look in the following

Data privacy

Management of security

Regulation implications

Auditing and risk management

Data privacy is the first priority of the company or the information regarding the individual online or the web page, that is the main concern and that is not to be breeched. The auditing at the time to time with the help of risk management protocols will help them to be active and precise in working.

As this segment is growing in rapid pace the concerns regarding the safety in using this system is also concerning the companies in the IT segment. After the recession phase the companies which are badly hit by this have gained boost by just tapping on cloud. This is a highly recommended security threat to the companies whose access is faster for any other company in the segment. The cost management is the major issue on the whole case where the cost involved for the other company is benefiting the other not the main segment company.

Concerns are increasing as how much safe this cloud environment is?

The few security topics which are discussed are as

1. Full Proof Security systems.

2. Risk involvement.

3. Reasons to be found, how they breeched the security.

4. Standard of the cloud computing.

5. Security for data stored.

Security and Standards

The breached security is the major concern as risk involved to be managed by the It experts involved in the segment of clod computing system, deterring the full proofing security system to the servers of local area and remote area. Cloud computing standards needs to be reviewed.

Summary

The above discussion establishes that he cloud computing make the browsing and the other applications on mobile or the desktop faster but the cost is too high to bear as the security of the information regarding the individual or the companies is at stake, so it must be reviewed.

I am Nadine Myrick from looking for pass certification exam assistance? The ability for many users to share resources is certainly one of them, by doing so a group of users can leverage the participation of multiple users into significant cost savings. One of the many aspects of cloud computing is that of cloud hosting.

Cloud hosting is the use of multiple servers that are all connected together. These connected servers are cumulatively referred to as a cloud. Sites on the servers may use resources from any or even all of the servers in the cloud.

The concept of cloud hosting has become very popular during the last few years because all of the hard drives, processing power and memory are shared by all of the sites in the cloud. Servers can be added to or removed from the cloud according to need. The benefits of cloud hosting are numerous but five of the more significant and apparent ones are listed below:

1. Scalability

The concept of using numerous servers that are all connected together sharing resources for all users makes it possible for each participating user to scale up or down as needed. This provides incredible flexibility because most participants can make adjustments without having to purchase their own hardware.

2. Reliability

One of the amazing advantages to cloud hosting is that if one of the connected servers fails, another one temporarily kicks in to provide back up until the problem server can be fixed or replaced. Because of this, some cloud hosting companies are claiming to have a 99.9% uptime.

3. Cost effectiveness

Since cloud hosting allows clients to pay only for actual resources used, it is much more cost effective than paying for and maintaining your own server[s]. With cloud hosting technology, you are essentially sharing the infrastructure and the resources with others. This drastically lowers the cost. Cloud hosting provides many of the same advantages of dedicated hosting (owning your own server) without all of the expense that is usually involved.

4. Efficiency (saves time)

Cloud hosting enables instant deployment taking away the need to obtain physical servers or any other related equipment. One can scale up or down without limit immediately without facing any downtime.

5. Simplified management

Since the cloud hosting company is responsible for maintaining the servers, each individual client has much less to manage. It is nice to let someone else worry about keeping the servers working properly and it frees you up to run other aspects of your business. One of the reasons that small businesses benefit from cloud hosting is because they can sometimes save thousands of dollars up front by avoiding the capital expenditure of purchasing their own servers. Additionally, they can substantially reduce power bills costs needed to maintain and upgrade
server hardware. Some small business owners feel that cloud servers and other cloud-based solutions are much easier to set up and use than computer applications.

Cloud hosting is not for everyone. It all depends on the size and nature of your business along with your level of technical expertise and http://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gifvarious other considerations. The five benefits discussed in this article should be considered as you evaluate your options.

John Hodge is a writer for RackMountPro.

If you are using GSM service you may note the toggling of 3G and H symbols in your mobile phone near the mobile signal strength. When the mobile phone is idle (It means no data transfer ), it turns to 3G but if we start Internet activities it will turn back to "H" from 3G. May be these symbols confuse a non-techie person. Before explaining this I think it is better give a short description on data bandwidth technologies we are using right now. 2.5G is known by the term GPRS in data service and 2.75G is termed as EDGE. If you see "E" symbol while using data service, it is EDGE network your mobile phone is connected. In the same way "UMTS" technology is commonly termed as 3G and HSDPA is termed as H. However, there is a difference in mentioning 3G and "H". 3G carries both voice and data but "H" is purely data service.

Why showing H in 3G network

So if your handset is HSDPA enabled, it can transfer data up to 7.2Mbps speed in 3G network. If your handset is not HSDPA enabled the maximum speed limit you can expect is 384 kbps. So when you start data transfer in your mobile phone, it will automatically change to maximum possible speed and the 3G symbol will change to H. When there is no data transfer your phone does not need to continue in H and it will come back to 3G.

However, do not confuse with the original 3.5G network where the data transfer speed limit is 42 Mbps (download limit). If you like to know more about these mobile data service technologies, follow the link below.
If you want to keep your information as safe as possible, you might want to consider having antivirus, anti-spyware, and adware programs in conjunction, to run on your system. In addition to these, you also want to have a strong firewall constantly monitoring your system. Most antivirus programs have firewalls built into them. To give you peace of mind and the utmost safety, make sure you have all of these programs running on your computer.

Having a reliable antivirus program is like having a home security system. You wouldn't want to go on a vacation and leave all your hard-earned investments and property open to anyone to just come in and take. Therefore, you purchase a home security system. Antivirus programs work along the same philosophy and are the best bet to keep your personal data secure.

When it comes to finding reliable antivirus companies, there are a few out there that I can recommend, including Norton and McAfee. While both of these programs are great, a few free ones are equally effective and will give you the ultimate protection. One of these is AVG. AVG constantly monitors and tracks any suspicious activity and alerts you of anything that might pop up that puts your system at risk. In some ways, AVG does a better job protecting your computer from network security risks.

WiFi networks can also put your system at risk. In a household where several family members are using different computers with the same wireless network, it can be easier to expose your computer network to security issues. If you have the authorization, remember to make your WiFi network passwords as difficult as possible for hackers to find it impossible to guess. If you do not have control over the WiFi network, you are better off not risking your computer system.

Preventing people from having access to your computer can also help to reduce security problems. This will also help to keep your personal data safe. The key to keeping your personal data safe and sound is using difficult passwords that hackers cannot access. One great method could be using a combination of capital letters, lower cases, and various symbols.

Although most antivirus programs have adware and spyware built in them, it is always safer to have separate programs installed to give that extra layer of security. Some great free programs out there take only minutes to install. Lavasoft provides an extensive family of products that will keep your systems secure for years to come. Spybot is another great tool to have for your ultimate spyware protection.

Another key factor in achieving ultimate network security is to clear history, cache, and run a disk clean-up at the end of using your computer daily. Once you do this, scan all your files with your antivirus, spyware, and adware programs. Quick scans should be done daily. A more thorough scan should be done on a weekly basis. Following these tips and having automatic updates to your antivirus, spyware, and adware programs will keep your network security out of the hands of devious hackers.

Guest post by Charles Fugar

Author Byline:

Charles Fugar is a computer security analyst and a blogger with many other interests. He writes for several sites such as Degree Jungle a college student resource. He also added if the Facebook was the dominant power in the past the rise of Google Search Engine would never happen. This is the worries of Sergey Brin shared in an Interview with Guardian. He said he is more worried than in the past about the threats to open nature of Internet because "very powerful forces that have lined up against the open internet on all sides and around the world", he says. He also noted that 5 years ago he never thought governments will try to restrict Internet but now it is started by certain countries.

The major powers which are against the open Internet according to Sergey Brin are:

1. Governments attempts for increased control over people communication

2. Restrictive nature of Facebook and Apple

3. Actions by entertainment industry against piracy

IF Facebook and Apple are not allowing Search Engine spiders to crawl their apps, there is no way to conduct search for information in those apps. In addition to this Facebook makes it difficult to transfer data to different services from Facebook account. It is true that over attempts by Governments to control the flow of information between people is destructive in nature. It will ruin the flow and beauty of Internet. The same is true with the actions of entertainment industry. What ever the reasons their attempts to make websites provide pirated materials unavailable to public can damage the open nature of Internet.

Technology Blog

Links for 2011-03-31 [del.icio.us]
