Writing a Great Novel-The Secret Every Writer Needs to Know

Every writer wants to write a great novel, but not every writer knows the secret that can make the difference between a successful novel and a failure. The secret that every writer needs to know is that every novel is a mystery. I know that might sound ridiculous at first, especially if you're writing a romance or a science fiction novel. At their core, though, even westerns and horror stories are mysteries.

Let me explain what I mean. When I say that every novel is a mystery, I mean that there is something (a mystery) that the main character must figure out during the story. In a murder mystery, this is pretty obvious. The main character must figure out who committed the murder. This search for the murderer then provides the framework around which the rest of the story is structured. In a romance, the protagonist may need to figure out how to get the man she loves to fall in love with her. In a science fiction novel, the main character may need to figure out how to get back home after his spaceship crashes on an alien planet. In each of these cases, solving the mystery in the story provides the framework.

This mystery can't just be a passing comment in the story. It needs to be the bones of the story. Therefore, the very first step in writing your novel is to figure out what mystery your main character is going to solve.

First, answer these questions. What is my character's main task during the story? What does he or she need to find out?

Next, give your main character a seriously compelling reason for completing their task. Let's use our previous science fiction novel as an example. Our main character needs to figure out how to get back home because he wants to witness the birth of his first child. Maybe he is carrying a vaccine that can cure an epidemic on his home planet. Maybe he only has three days of breathable air. Maybe he has a message that must be delivered to the president in order to prevent war. The more dire the consequences, the better the story will be. The list of possibilities is endless.

You can see how important the word "because" is when you're writing your novel's statement. It can turn a good idea for a novel into a great idea. Try using this format for your novel's mystery sentence: The main character needs to (write the problem here) because (write a compelling reason here).

You can use this mystery statement as part of your marketing material when the novel is finished. It can appear in your press release and in your online advertising.

If you've already written a novel, check to see if you can write a mystery statement. If not, there's a good chance your novel lacks focus. I've seen some pretty decent writers spend a lot of time writing very mediocre books which sold only a few copies because they ignored this simple secret.

Being late or absent is one of the biggest problems companies have in the work place. If you knew how to cure this problem, you could seminar your idea and retire.

But this is not so simple. It is a big enough chore to get the work load scheduled effectively when everyone is present, but when they are late or absent, it puts a strain not only on the company, but the other employees as well. Someone then has to pick up the work load and this can create a negative attitude in the environment. T his usually causes upset employees and can be costly to the company. Being late or absent will always be a problem for every company or supervisor. Making every employee feel that they are an integral part of the team is a plus to their attitude toward the job and the overall success of the company.

Praise your employees when they perform as expected and especially when they do a little extra. You'd be surprised how a complement can change the attitude of anyone - when they know that they are a part of the
team. It is very important that the supervisor leads by example. If there becomes a situation where an employee is late or absent excessively, find out what is the cause. Maybe he or she feels that the job no longer is a challenge or maybe they are so bored with what they are doing that they find excuses for being late or absent.

Ask the employee if they have any ideas on changing or implementing a new or more efficient way of performing their tasks. Sometimes an employee is shy to the supervisor but very open with their thoughts and ideas to co-workers. Whatever the cause, the supervisor has an enormous task of trying to minimize it.

But as stated earlier, this is a problem that will be with us forever.

The first decision to make is whether to buy a PC (personal computer) or a laptop. The laptop on the other hand has all its bits in one box which is the size of a large book. Notebooks and netbooks are just smaller versions of the laptop.

Unless portability is important to you I would advise you opt for a PC. Not only is the screen larger and usually easier to read, and using a mouse to move your cursor around the screen is less fiddly than a tracking
pad; but a PC is cheaper too.

Having decided on the hardware (the bits you can see and touch), the next choice is the software (the code that makes the machine work). Here the choice is between two contenders: Microsoft's Windows and a Mac. Most computers come with a Windows operating system already installed and, whilst the market leader is necessarily automatically the best, a computer running Windows should be cheaper to buy than a Mac.

If you have opted for the Windows system there are further decisions still to be made. Windows 7 is the latest offering from Microsoft and this replaces Windows Vista. Windows & is an improvement on the OS it replaces, so let's assume you opt for that. However, Windows 7 itself comes in several versions but unless you are using your new computer for business choose the Home Premium. If drinking is out, then you may want to have some bingo cards handy and a deck of cards. A card game is a good way to bring everyone together. So if the conversation is lacking, you don't leave the entertaining to the TV. There are many other things you can do, you just have to get creative.

Holidays are meant to be fun, so to fully enjoy the job as host make sure you do all your shopping ahead of time and create dishes that can be easily reheated. You don't want to have to do too much on the day of the party. Of course large dishes will need to be cooked on that special date, but appetizers and desserts should be prepared on the day before or possibly sooner.

I thought it was interesting that employers reported that the top three mistakes made by recent college graduates during the application and interview process were: 61% not dressing appropriately, 50% not turning off cell phones or electronic devices, and 48% not asking good questions during an interview.

All of these challenges can be overcome by understanding how important your professional image is to
attracting the best jobs and future career opportunities. Here are seven strategies to get you hired when the competition is fierce.

Times Are Different. It's a different business environment this year and to get employed you need to be authentic and unique, not the same as everyone else in your field of study. Be prepared to dress, behave and speak more effectively than your competitors. Be the one that the interviewer remembers, that remains top of mind. When I used to interview executives for Macy's, Inc. I could always tell you after a week of interviews, which were my top one or two picks. It was human nature that I resonated with someone's personality, their professional grace and whether they had a strong personal brand, which exuded confidence and would blend in with our corporate brand. That's critical. Remember you need to reflect the company's high values from your dress, grooming, etiquette and communication skills.

First Impressions Are Key. We have all heard the old saying, "you never get a second chance to make a great first impression." That is so true. You will find that a great first impression will open the next door of opportunity for you-the second interview. However, it is crucial that you keep up your positive impressions during the time on the job. Many new executives look great while they are interviewing for the job, but once hired tend to become more relaxed and dress more casually. Beware! This is one of the top complaints I receive from my large corporate clients. Know that to overcome the negative impression created from coming to work one day looking disheveled can take over twelve times of dressing polished to change that impression. You can't afford those kinds of mistakes today if you want to obtain-and keep-a great job. Manage your image by looking professional everyday, allowing others to think positively about you.

Dress to Impress. These statistics indicate that the number one challenge employers have with recent graduates is dressing inappropriately. If you take action on just one thing in this article, this one concept alone could land you the job of your dreams. One of the most common challenges graduates have is dressing too casually once they enter the corporate world. If you want to make the big salaries, you need to dress in a professional and polished manner. Wear a suit, sport coat, blazer and skirt and slacks everyday if you are going into a job that commands that you interact with outside clients. If you will not be interfacing with clients or working in a much more casual environment, wear dress trousers or a skirt and sport shirt or blouse to look polished, but friendly and approachable. Be sure when dressing down to purchase fabrics that look great even in the middle of the afternoon. Look for cotton and Lycra® blends to keep you wrinkle-free.

The Devil Is in the Details. The details are always a sign of a well-dressed executive. The finer points are key because these send silent messages to others about how you feel about yourself. It's the style in which you treat others that gives people another perception about your image. The study above indicated 50% of recent college graduates applying for jobs would not turn off their cell phones or electronic devices. Although all of our technology toys allow us to be accessible 24/7, it's important to respect employer's policies regarding cell phone use. As you venture from college to corporate, take heed and always turn your cell phone to silent as you go into a meeting or interview. This shows the person you are meeting with that you are respectful of their time and want to give them your undivided attention. Being aware of this one point will help you create rapport with others and develop long-lasting relationships.

Be Interested-not Interesting. In the interview you want to effectively communicate your expertise and how you could benefit the firm once they hire you, but be sure to research the organization prior to your interview so that you can ask some appropriate questions to keep the dialog on a two-way street. While the interviewer is assessing whether you are the right match for their company, you need to be asking open-ended questions about the firm to determine if their mission statement, values, the type of work and company culture is the right fit for you.

Attitude is Everything. In these competitive times, you must remain positive and upbeat about every interview you encounter. Soon after the interview, call and follow-up on your interview in a positive tone. Don't forget that your voice is key to people interpreting whether you are confident and positive. I tell my clients to smile when they are on the phone and their voice will be perceived as being cheery. Keep your dignity and your spirits high, even if it becomes a little frustrating at times during the interview process. I always believe things happen for a purpose-so know that for whatever reason, that may not be the right job for you.

Following these seven strategies will give you a framework for improving your chances of acquiring the right job, regardless of the recession. Your ideal job is right around the corner. Say that mantra everyday, and one day soon, that perfect job will come your way.

After ten minutes with Ed Tettemer in the offices of the agency he founded with partner, Steve Red, you begin to understand the agency's passion for excellence. After an hour with Ed, you begin to understand the intensity of his personal passion. You begin to understand it but I have a feeling that, even after days and days of exposure to him, you probably wouldn't get the whole picture.

"Passion," the word, may seem descriptive of a complicated set of feelings and opinions. Oddly, in thinking about Ed Tettemer's passion for his agency and its clients, it seems rather simple. It's just that he wants everything to be excellent: excellent clients, excellent co-workers, excellent marketing solutions, excellent creative executions, excellent everything.

"Where'd you go to college, Ed?" (A question most interviewers ask without expecting surprises in the response.) "Never went to college. Dropped out of high school and never looked back. Got my college
degree at the Elkman agency and my graduate degree at Earle Palmer Brown."

Maybe it's best to start at the beginning. Ed was born and raised and was "scared of the city," living in a rather parochial environment. His Father was a sheriff in Bucks County and his Mother worked as a secretary in the office of the small township where they lived. Theirs was a simple life, a good life in a small town atmosphere. He and his Dad fished a lot and they ate what they caught. The vegetables on their table came from their garden except for the mushrooms they harvested after heavy rains. It seemed to be an uncomplicated existence far from the pressures and tensions of traditional business, especially the advertising business.

Dad was pretty much occupied with his job and the politics of the community. Mom was more influential on the lives of Ed and his older brother. Neither parent made strong suggestions about what Ed and his brother did to prepare them for a career. They were good people and Mom, especially, influenced the way Ed has turned out. She was passionate about music and books. Ed is, too. She preached, "Keep your eyes and ears open." Ed tries to do that. All she wanted for her children was for them to be happy and she didn't try to control their every move. Today, Ed appreciates that.

His childhood was a happy one. He liked to fish. He played a lot of baseball. He was a fairly typical American kid. Then, when he was in high school, there was a dramatic change. It was called the Viet Nam War. Consistent with how many people felt at the time, his older brother took off for Canada to resist the war. That had severe, negative impact on life in peaceful Bucks County. Overnight, the Tettemer family became pariahs. Friends deserted them. The community changed its view of them. Church changed. Bad stuff!

Clearly, that situation had a powerful influence on Ed's psyche. He dropped out of high school and spent over three years hitch hiking all over the country. He found ways to make enough money to do a lot of both savory and unsavory things. He was a confused young man wandering the country during confusing times.

But he never lost touch with his Mother and Dad so, ultimately, he went home to Bucks County and found a job working as a glorified gopher for the Doylestown Intelligencer. He ran ads back and forth from the paper to its small, retail advertisers. He says, "I guess I was a junior account executive and didn't know it." He delivered ad proofs, started helping small stores with their ad copy and quickly learned how those small retailers did their newspaper advertising.

During the year at the paper, he got to know and got to be friendly with many of his customers. He realized that most of them didn't have a lot of confidence in the help they were getting from the paper. He believed that he could help them do better advertising, advertising that actually worked and could be tracked. He doesn't know why he believed that but he believed it.

He remembered Pete's Place in a rather nostalgic way. Pete's Place was a restaurant in Ottsville just north of Doylestown. Their ad always ran on the same page with other restaurants. All of the ads were the same size, were laid out in a conventional rectangle and had many of the same messages: good food, low prices, family atmosphere, etc. Pete's Place was pretty much the same as a lot of places in that part of the country. Except for one thing. Their logo and sign was a big wagon wheel.

After Ed convinced them to try to look different, their next ad was designed to be round. It stood out nicely on the page with all the rectangles. Someone once said that good advertising should zig when the competition's zags. While Ed didn't refer to that specific quote during our interview, much of what he said about Pete's Place and about Red Tettemer's work seems to support that "Zig if they Zag"idea. Ed reflects, "I think I made six bucks on the work I did for Pete's."

The result? He worked with mostly small retailers for four years and developed a keen understanding of how the retailer thinks and of what it takes to motivate consumers to respond to advertising and promotion. In his own words, "I guess I didn't really know what I was doing but I liked my clients, worked hard and made a decent living."

Marriage followed as did a move into Center City where he, wife Lyn and daughter Jessie still live. His first job in the city was with the old Elkman Agency where he claims to have started "Knowing nothing." His boss, Creative Director Jim Block, promised to make him into a copy writer and further promised that he would like doing it. Jim did what he promised and Ed did like it. He had five productive years there but was always the junior writer. He needed more.

Off to Becker/Kanter (now Panzano & Partners,) he soon learned the logic of focusing on vertical businesses. He was a senior creative director there working almost exclusively on shopping center advertising and promotion. The "vertical" idea had great influence on him in the early days of Red Tettemer when they spent most of their effort with cable TV and entertainment accounts.

He was recruited to Earle Palmer Brown where three factors influenced his thinking and his behavior. First, Brian Meridith, then the head of creative at EPB, showed him how important it was to have a good idea at the beginning of creative execution. "What's the idea? What's the idea?" was hammered into his consciousness. Second, he formed a new perspective about "vertical." While it's valuable and, at times, necessary, to focus on specific industries, it's also valuable and stimulating to have a broader base. Today's Red Tettemer is definitely broad based and probably always will be.

The third factor was, perhaps, the most important. In early 1992, Ed just didn't know what to do with his career and his growing, positive reputation. "I was disillusioned. I just didn't believe in the people I worked for."

Fortunately, he was allowed to do some free lance work and frequently collaborated with Steve Red with whom he had a marvelous working relationship. He got a call from Steve about working with him on several large assignments. His copy, Steve's design skills and their ability to work together so effectively brought out his assertion, "I had the time of my life working with Steve."

It took Ed three years to convince Steve to join with him to form Red Tettemer in 1996. They live by their mission statement, "Energize our clients and their businesses." Ed is proud when he reports that they try hard to make their clients' competitors envious. They've followed those convictions while moving from "vertical" client groups into more general accounts. Some of their recent acquisitions are SEPTA, University of Pennsylvania Health System and Hatfield Meats.

Neither Ed nor Steve has much tolerance for the traditional approach used by many agencies. So, they've successfully created a fun environment. Their office space is designed in creative ways. The décor is imaginative but comfortable. There are surprises everywhere: a conference room with no conference table, eclectic art work all over the walls, small nooks and crannies with interesting appointments and two balconies which allow for panoramic views of the City. The physical experience of the offices is sure to be pleasant and entertaining for every age group: traditionalists as well as employees, whose average age is under thirty.

What's the smartest business decision you ever made, Ed? Instantly, the response is, "Being in partnership with Steve Red. In fact, that may be my best life decision." How about your worst decision? "I waited too long to expand from our "vertical" focus. also, I think I've been too reclusive." (Maybe this article will help, Ed.)

Fun for Ed? Trying to understand client needs and finding solutions. Cooking. Reading. Joining the fire company near his beach home. Remarking that he thinks he made his Mother and Father proud. Red Tettemer's annual retreat. Family. Many things.

One more question, Ed. "What would you do with a couple of wishes?"

Thoughtfully, he responds in a way that further demonstrates his passion. He says that he'd like to keep in closer touch with all of his employees, that he wishes he could reenergize the agency more frequently and that he'd like to take time to celebrate their good fortune more frequently.

As per studies AMS affects about 40 percent travellers at an altitude of up to 10,000 feet and more than 50 percent on routes on higher altitudes which are mostly taken by trekkers.

High altitude pulmonary edema affects the lungs whereas High altitude Cerebral Edema affects the brain of the person. In HAPE an extra vascular fluid which is a fluid outside the blood vessels accumulates in the lungs of a person at high altitudes. This mostly happens when the person climbs the height very fast and this trek involves vigorous exercise. This leads to shortage of breath or dyspnoea as it is called, cough, fast heart rate and decreased oxygen levels in the arteries. On the other hand, High altitude cerebral edema is a form of AMS where the brain swells and ceases to function in the usual manner. This increases intracranial pressure and can lead to death. The major symptoms are
vomiting and nausea, lethargy, confusion, loss of balance, seizure and this all can finally result in coma.

HACE is said to occur after the trekker ascends the altitude very fast whereas HAPE is usually said to occur on the second day after the person has ascended. HACE generally affects the people who continue to ascend with the symptoms of acute mountain sickness whereas HAPE affects young and healthy trekker.

One major difference between HAPE and HACE is that HACE always is accompanied by the usual symptoms of AMS whereas HAPE it not related to the signs of AMS. The main symptoms of AMS are Loss of appetite, fatigue, weakness, dizziness etc.

HAPE can be treated by immediately starting to descend and go down 2000 feet to 4000 feet and this should be tried and done when the victim has the power to do it himself.
