If you know me at all you know that I have a strong dislike for math. I struggled with it [...]

If you know me at all you know that I have a strong dislike for math. I struggled with it in high school and college. For some reason I just think you should let numbers play with numbers and letters play with letters. When you mix them together my brain just can’t handle it.

I came across Ps. 86:11-13 today. “Teach me your way, LORD, that I may rely on your faithfulness; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name. I will praise you, Lord, my God, with all my heart; I will glorify your name forever. For great is your love toward me; you have delivered me from the depths, from the realm of the dead.” NIV

The idea of a divided heart got me thinking. How much of my heart is divided? If I used math to figure it out would my heart be fully sold out to following God or merely a percentage somewhere around 85%? God’s love is evidenced to me in the person of Jesus Christ. The psalmist says, “great is your love toward me”. If that’s the case then it calls for 100% devotion. Lord help me to praise you with all my heart today.

Do you ever have one of those days when you ask the question, “God, why do you use humans again?” I often find myself asking the question of the Psalmist in Psalm 8:3-4. “When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him?” How comforting it is to know though that while God doesn’t need us he chooses to use us. I am thankful that in spite of my past and my failures he still loves me and has a plan for my life.

Let me just encourage you today that God does love you. He can use you if you are willing to follow. In this messed up world it is so easy to forget that simple fact. I’m not sure why He chose us but am thanking Him for it today.

“See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!” 1 John 3:1

Much has been said about Tim Tebow in the past few months. Articles, websites, forum posts, commentators all have something to say about him. Some say he says too much about his faith, or lacks football skills. Bottom line though, love him or hate him God is using him to remind me of one thing. After a game or a great play we see him bow and give thanks to the creator of the universe (known as “Tebowing”). Now, I am certainly aware and reminded that we can’t put a man on a pedestal that only Jesus Christ should be on. In fact, our Lead Pastor, Jon McDugle, just gave a great talk about not putting humans on pedestals (you can check it out here). However, every time I see Tim bow on his knee and give thanks I am reminded of Philippians 2:9-11, which says, “God exalted him to the highest place and gave him a name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” One day we will all bow our knee to Jesus Christ (Rom 14:9-12). Bow in life and live fully and free. Choose not to bow in this life and miss out on the chance to be reconciled to God (Col 1:21-23).

It has been said that, “faithfulness is determined by what I’m doing with what I have NOW…not what I will promise God I will do if he gives me more.” We often start in our faith journey trusting God for everything but over time we begin to drift away from trusting God fully. This week I have been challenged to be faithful with what I am doing in the here and now. Ecclesiastes 9:10 says, Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might, for in the grave where you are going, there is neither working or planning nor knowledge or wisdom.

I am amazed at how patient God is with us. I am amazed at how patient my wife is with me as well. Yesterday, as I headed to the grocery store she had to remind me a 2nd time of what I was supposed to buy. One of my favorite Psalms is Psalm 62. If you have never read it I would encourage you to do so. While the entire Psalm is great, I love verses 5-8.

Find rest, O my soul, in God alone; my hope comes from him. He alone is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will not be shaken. My salvation and my honor depend on God; he is my mighty rock, my refuge. Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your hearts to him for God is our refuge.

This is the 2nd time the psalmist says, that his soul finds rest in God alone. In verse 1 it says, “my soul finds rest in God alone; my salvation comes from him”. Then in verse 5 he says “find rest, O my soul, in God alone; my hope comes from him.” I often forget to trust in God alone. What a reminder from David that we will only find rest in God. Our salvation comes from Him and because of that we have great hope. I am encouraged that David needed to remind himself of where his rest and strength come from. I’m thanking God for His patience and grace in reminding me 2 times today that true rest is found in Him. I’m also thankful for a wife who shows patience and love in reminding me of the little things that I might not have paid attention to the first time.

Sunday, Oct. 16 we will kick off a new series called “Through the Window”. We will be diving into the Psalms as they offer a window into the lives and worship of our spiritual ancestors. We will look at what true worship is and find out that it’s so much more than songs…it’s our lives.

It has been said that at any given time there are 7 people watching your life. Don’t think about it too long or it will start to creep you out. If that really is the case then I would like to add one more person. Actually, it’s the God of the universe. He sees all you do. When I was a teenager my Mom used to tell me as I walked out the door that God is always watching. Now, I always assumed that was a scare tactic by my parents. However, the older I get I see that this truth demonstrates God’s love and care for us.

Psalm 11:4 says, “The Lord is in his holy temple; the Lord is on his heavenly throne. He observes the sons of men; his eyes examine them.”

What a comforting fact. He sees all you do and yet He still loves you and desires to have a relationship with you. Not sure what you’re going through, but people are watching and God is watching. Don’t let that scare you…let it motivate you to live for Him that others might see God’s love for you in your life.

On Feb. 24 I was challenged that I don’t pray BIG enough. That day I wrote a blog post that summarizes what I meant which you can read here. Over the next several months I started praying some BIG prayers for my personal life and things here at church. Specifically, I prayed that God would move in the lives of some specific students in a way that only He could do. Well, over the past few weeks we have been going through a series in the high school group entitled “Just Do It”. Basically, the idea is that we know what we should do – we just choose not to do it. I cannot tell you how many times I have just stood back and literally been in shock at what God is doing. Now I prayed before, but so often it was “God thank you for this day, help me to represent you well, etc.” All of those are good prayers, but our God is big enough and desires to work in our lives in an incredible way if we will just let Him.

2 weeks ago my BIG prayer was that some of the students I had been praying for would take the next step in their relationship with God through baptism. That week I prayed God would help 5 students see the need to take this step. How cool was it when I asked who wanted to be baptized and 6 teenagers raised their hands. It has been said that “what you pray for reflects what you believe about God”. I realized my small prayers revealed a small view I had of God. He is BIG enough to handle anything you give to Him! I’m thanking God today for his patience with me as I continue to learn how BIG He really is.
