The full conference, as well as pre-conference workshops, are approved for Continuing Education Credits through the American Psychological Association. The workshop’s format is new this year. Four types of workshop will be presented this year and will last 90 minutes to three hours (see the Conference website for details).
a) General introduction. Duration: 3 hours. The goal is to provide a wide coverage of information for people who are new to the field of VR. Such a workshop is mostly based on presenting concepts and data. They will introduce key information and vocabulary about the hardware, presence, cybersickness, etc.
b) Treatment manuals. Duration: 90 minutes, except for PTSD given the complexity of this disorder. Their goal is to demonstrate practical skills on how to use VR according to the treatment manuals used in various outcome studies. They will be very focused on the relevant disorder (e.g., social anxiety, fear of flying, addictions). These workshops are devoted to demonstrating how to apply the therapeutic skills with VR.
c) Using VR in clinical application. Duration: 90 minutes. Their goal is to show how to use VR in assessment or brief interventions. As opposed to Treatment applications, there is no treatment manual to teach and the focus will be on demonstrating how to use the technology for assessing and interpreting data, or on how to apply it to specific problems (e.g., VR in physical and occupational therapy).
d) Hands-on technological applications. Duration: 90 minutes. Their goal is to teach practical skills on how to use technologies that are growing within the field of cybertherapy and requires a specific set of skills (e.g., eye tracking). Although relevant empirical studies will be presented, the focus will be less on clinical disorders and more on handling the hardware and software

2. There will be 2 ”Young Minds Research Awards” given for best student scientific merit at CT16, both in the amount of $500 each. These awards showcase outstanding achievements in student poster submissions at CT16 and are presented to those projects judged to have the greatest potential to contribute to the innovative field of cyberpsychology, cybertherapy, training, & rehabilitation. These awards are annually sponsored by the Virtual Reality Medical Institute and Mary Ann Liebert, Inc.

3. There will be a New Investigator Award in the field of VR CRC-Clinical Cyberpsychology given at CT11, for the presentation of outstanding research quality at the 2011 Conference. The aim of this prize is to reward the presentation of strong methodological studies at the CyberTherapy conference. The recipient must be a researcher who is new to the field of cyberpsychology. It is open to both oral and poster presentations and to researchers from all countries and disciplines. The award is delivered by Stephane Bouchard, Chairholder of the Canada Research Chair in Clinical Cyberpsychology. It includes a certificate and a check of 1 000 $ US. If you have any question about this award, please contact Stephane Bouchard by e-mail (stephane.bouchard@uqo.ca).

4. Lastly, to celebrate more than a decade of exciting advances in cybertherapy as well as the growth of the CyberPsychology and CyberTherapy conference itself, we are proud to announce the 7th Annual CyberTherapy Lifetime Achievement Award. This award has a tradition of honoring a person who has demonstrated outstanding lifetime achievements in the fields of advanced technologies and healthcare. All members of the CyberPsychology and CyberTherapy Conference program committee are invited to nominate one of their colleagues as a recipient of this award, which promises to honor a long line of esteemed researchers.

Submit your abstract today to be a part of this groundbreaking conference!

Interstress Video: {youtube}mGrpn95VLa4{/youtube}

INTERSTRESS: Interreality in the Management and Treatment of Stress-Related Disorders

The INTERSTRESS project aims to design, develop and test an advanced ICT-based solution for the assessment and treatment of psychological stress.

Objectives:

Quantitative and objective assessment of symptoms using biosensors and behavioral analysis

Decision support for treatment planning through data fusion and detection algorithms

Provision of warnings and motivating feedback to improve compliance and long-term outcome

To reach these goals, INTERSTRESS will use a new e-Health concept: Interreality.

What is Interreality? It is the integration of assessment and treatment within a hybrid, closed-loop empowering experience, bridging physical and virtual worlds into one seamless reality:

Behavior in the physical world will influence the virtual world experience

Behavior in the virtual world will influence the real world experience

These goals will be achieved through:

3D Shared Virtual World role-playing experiences in which users interact with one another

Immersive in the health care centre
/Non-immersive in the home setting

Bio and Activity Sensors (from the Real to the Virtual World)

ICT 2010 Event - Digitally Driven

A three-day event, from September 27-29, brought together 6000 participants from all over Europe, including businessmen, researchers and policymakers. The “ICT 2010-Digitally Driven” conference and exhibition housed more than 100 groundbreaking information and communication technology (ICT) research projects funded by the European Commission. This event is organized by the European Commission every two years, and this year was hosted by the Belgian Presidency of the EU’s Council of Ministers, being honored with an appearance by Prince Phillipe of Belgium. The European Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science, Marie Georghegan-Quinn said she particularly welcomes the exhibition during the event, for it showcases “the biggest success stories among the projects funded under the 7th Framework Programme in the ICT sector.”

The major themes at the conference were digital solution for sustainable growth in a low carbon economy and the role of ICT in the life of citizens, as well as public participation and support. Vice President of the European Commission, Neelie Kroes, called for cooperation and collaboration, by saying, “We can do much more together”. In keeping with the theme of cooperation, Prime Minister of Belgium Yves Leterme emphasized the importance of intensifying cooperation at the European level as well, needing to act as a union, towards the EU 2020 target. This new strategy, the EU 2020, is a concrete way to leave the global crisis behind and turn the European Union into a “smart, sustainable and inclusive economy”, which will deliver productivity, social cohesion and employment. These challenges require a common and coordinated response.

Alongside this are calls for raising ICT research and innovation to help increase quality of life and overcome social challenges, as well as improve healthcare. Christian Reinaud, CEO of Agfa-Gevaert NV, Belgium, said that ICT is a key tool to improving the efficiency of healthcare systems in Europe.

With around 25-35% of the exhibits focusing on healthcare, it shows that indeed ICT is crucial for the future of medicine. These health-focused exhibits ranged from supporting independent living and offering companionship, to catering to the elderly, battling cognitive decline, controlling and treating seizures, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, epilepsy, and to easing life for the paralyzed.

Some concrete examples include: TOBI, practical technology for brain-computer interaction (BCI) aimed at improving the quality of life of disabled people; PRESENCCIA, dedicated to the understanding of brain mechanisms underlying presence in virtual and mixed reality environments through neuroscience, psychology computer science, and engineering; OLDES, a system which collects and transmits information from the patient’s own home to hospitals and physicians; Playmancer, which uses 3-D computer games to combat the negative effects of mental disorders and offer virtual therapy; and the Vesalius Robot, a surgical robot which aims to improve the safety of interventional surgery; and the STREAM (scaled teleoperation for robust enhanced microsurgery) project on robotic microsurgery.

This great number of healthcare-focused exhibits shows that people are not only aware of the limits of today’s healthcare systems, but they are equally aware of tomorrow’s possibilities, and equally willing to embrace the opportunities of ICT.

UbiHealth 2010: International Workshop on Ubiquitous Health and Wellness

Ubihealth is a premier venue for presenting research in the design, development, deployment, evaluation and understanding of ubiquitous and pervasive computing systems for health care. Co-organized by the European projects MONARCA and Interstress, given its multi-disciplinary nature, Ubihealth has developed a broad base of audience over the past 5 years. Key audience communities are Human Computer Interaction, Pervasive Computing, Distributed and Mobile Computing, Real World Modeling, Sensors and Devices, Middleware and Systems, Programming Models and Tools, and Human Centric Validation and Experience Characterization.

During the event researchers and practitioners from a variety of backgrounds such as electrical engineering, computer science, pervasive computing, human computer interface design, psychology, psychiatry and other medical sciences gave 11 presentations and 3 invited speeches that addressed the potential of ubiquitous computing for mental disorders and maintenance of mental health.

While, some research has been directed towards dementia and autism, less focus has been given to the major mental disorders, including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder and stress. However, mental disorders affect around a quarter of all people at some time during their life. These disorders are universal – affecting all countries and societies, and individuals at all ages. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), mental disorders have a major negative direct and indirect impact on economy and on the quality of life of individuals and families.
