1. Don’t buy an expensive diamond or gemstone that doesn’t have a report from a major lab. Look for reports from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), the American Gem Society (AGS) or the American Gem Trade Association lab (GTC).

2. Be cautious when buying rubies. Some “rubies” on the market are composites of low-grade ruby material and colored glass. They are attractive, but more in the nature of costume jewelry than gems, and this should be reflected in the price. Always ask the salesperson to write down what treatments have been applied to colored stones.

3. Have jewelry independently appraised for insurance purposes. Choose an appraiser who is an accredited member of a nationally recognized appraisal organization, such as the American Society of Appraisers, as well as a Graduate Gemologist of the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) or the Gemmological Association of Great Britain (FGA). The appraisal should be done for a set price, not for a percentage of the value - that’s unethical.

4. Have the jeweler write a description of the piece on the receipt and put the return policy in writing as well.

Knickers for Africa

HOTmilk recently had the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of thousands of women who were in need of a different kind of help. Ex-pat Zimbabwean, Morag Roy, spoke with a local priest in Zimbabwe on one of her trips to her home country and was dismayed to hear of the ongoing sexual abuse suffered by thousands of women and young girls there, particularly in the villages. Makeup tips from Christopher Drummond

If it is raining the day of a special event, stay away from liquid foundation which has a tendency to “melt” and not last as long. Wear a little more makeup than you normally would for all products knowing that some will come off due to bad weather. Be sure to start by adding layers to your foundation. Use water resistant products, such as Christopher Drummond Beauty products (Veludo Velvet Foundation and Finale Finishing Powder).

It just so happens I use Christopher Drummond Veludo Velvet power foundation and bronzer, and we had a rainy week in Florida last week. If I got wet going to and from my car, some makeup would rub off on my cell phone, but overall everything lasted great. I love that the foundation is all natural, organic-based and vegan. Hair Tips from Philip Pelusi:

Check the weather report a few days in advance so you can plan to wear your hair up or down. If rain is in the forecast, plan ahead to wear your hair either all up, or half up and half down.

Pulling hair into an updo or half upsweep is the best strategy to stay looking good in wet conditions because hair is already curled, pinned and sprayed in place. It is also easier to keep an updo dry under an umbrella.

You should always bring a small emergency kit in your purse to a special event with a few hair pins, a ponytail holder and a small purse size hair spray in case you are caught by surprise. If hair gets wet, go for a quick style change. Pull hair back into the ponytail and wrap hair around the ponytail holder and secure into place with the hair pins. Mist with spray.

One we missed

Emily Blunt - You can practically see the Fashion Forms Nubra right through Emily’s dress. Lucky for you, there is a new Nubra. Chloë Sevigny looks like she opted for a bit of tape and that’s all. You can see actual areola through this ensemble. Maybe next time she should opt for Fashion Forms staykups which will give the same natural look while allowing for discretion.

Kristen Bell looks adorable and is doing everything almost right in this strapless, satin white gown. She had some puckering in her gown fabric near her side cleavage and a bit less bra padding would have alleviated that. To achieve a neat strapless look, without having to tug all night, we suggest the Le Mystere Sculptural Strapless Push-Up Bra. It’s seamless, molded, has underwire & graduated foam padding. The side wings wings feature silicone gripper at the top & boning to keep it in place. The plunge center gore is great for low cut tops. It also comes with removable straps. I have this bra and I love it - even for all day wear! For a great look at Kristen Bell’s butt, check out the E! Online 360 glam cam. She’s stickin’ it out, baby! I would love to see her in this same style dress in a deep teal color to bring out her eyes.

Who else do we applaud? Heather Graham is a vision in black sequins and she knows it because she is milking every shot we’ve seen. Christina Hendricks’ ample bosom was barely held in place as it was swathed perfectly in precious peach. I honestly had not heard of Lara Spencer, but she looks fantastic. No lines under her white gown. Fergie looks like a lady in lavender. Only she & Dolly Parton can quite obviously bust out of the top of a dress and get away with it. Love the silver zipper down the back of Courteney Cox Arquette’s dress. It adds some bootyliciousness.

For daring and chest baring, like Olivia Wilde or Lisa Edelstein, the celebs rely on fashion tape. This double-sticky tape is not plastic like you used for science fair, but made to be safe for both skin and fabric. Sometimes it is medical grade adhesive, and sometimes it is a light fabric itself. Commando Matchsticks look like a pink book of matches so you can take them with you anywhere. They are clear and can fix peek-a-boo bra straps, slipped-down sling back heels, bursting buttons, fallen hems, and more.  

Maria Menounos looks braless. But she’s drooping. A great pushup bra can keep the girls where they are meant to be - at the halfway point between your shoulder and elbow. The top of her dress is even puckering unpleasantly due to her faux pas. Mélanie Laurent also seemed to be lacking necessary undergarments. Any convertible bra or corset could have worked with Maria’s one-shoulder gown. The Va Bien Ultra Lift long line convertible bra is like the ultimate corset, with seamless foam cups. 3 soft, flexible, plastic stays molded between the padded layers are sealed within the cups to provide Ultra Lift. It provides waist, hips, and tummy control. It also comes with convertible, removable clear straps.

I love Drew Barrymore, but she has some nude weirdness going on under this dress. I don’t know if she chose the wrong shade of shapewear or if this is sewn into her dress, but from the boning it seems like shapewear. This allows me to remind you of choosing the right shade of nude for use under white, cream, peach and other light colors. White under white looks odd, and so does the wrong skin color. Myskins.com is a new company trying to combat that problem with multiple shades of skin tones available. You can even download, print or order a color chart. Right now they just offer bras and panties - which we hope to try in Feb. We’ll see if they offer shapewear in the near future. Meanwhile Drew should do something about that glitter growth coming out of her hip.

Maggie Gyllenhaal did great up top, but you can see the exact spot where her shapewear comes to an end on her leg. Something without a band in the leg would prevent that. We like the Slimpressions products for this.

Julie Bowen looked great. Sandra Bullock, as cute as she is, tried and failed in plum. Leona Lewis knocked our socks off with asymmetrical layers of purple satin. She and Zoe Saldana are 2 of our absolute favorites for the night.  Kate Hudson looked like a wedding cake on teeter-totter shoes.
