I can only be open by emptying out the clutter of distractions that I have periodically collected without noticing. When I am in this state, it seems my attention is scattered over my accumulation of mental/emotional trinkets that have magnetically attached themselves to me. I am unable to find my center. I am as a dancer out of balance, awkward, stumbling, likely to injure myself or others (in body, heart or spirit) if I continue that way.

Not surprisingly, in the times when I am unavailable to truly be open to others, I am also unavailable to be open to my authentic self.

An old story tells of an individual with a very busy mind going to talk with a teacher about Zen. The teacher listened intently and began to make tea as this fellow talked on about his thoughts, concerns, wishes, and imaginings. When the tea was ready, the master began to pour into her visitor's cup. Once the cup was full, she kept on pouring. Eventually, the fellow could watch no more and broke from his soliloquy to say: "Stop, stop! The cup is overfull. No more can go in!"

The teacher responded: "Like this cup, you are full of all manner of yourself. How can I show you Zen unless you first empty your cup?"

Oddly enough, it seems that most often the things I have so filled my attention with are not even things that I find that interesting—in fact much to the contrary—bills coming due, aggravations of the workday, things that have not gone as I planned, and dreams for the future. Each of these were things I needed to consider, but forgot to “put them down” once I had given them due consideration. Now and again, I am forced to realize the buildup, and do a thorough housecleaning—heart and mind—thinking the job is done—no need to concern myself with that for a while. However, without regular tidying/emptying, the next think I know the cup if full again and I am not taking in what anyone else is saying, not perceptive of the feelings of those around me (or myself).

For me, the best way of emptying my cup is either mediation or a walk in nature. Anything that will allow me to be completely passive will do it, allowing the clouds to come and go, without comment, concern, or contemplation—just a submissive lake beneath them, neither added to nor subtracted from by their reflection.

This is more a “show me, don’t tell” solution. No amount of rationalization can resolve a problem of heart and spirit.

As within, so without.**

If you want to spread hope, you must exhibit within yourself. It’s like coming into a room filled with people whose mood was communally contrary to yours as you entered. Whether you stay in that room or not, most people will start to feel a shift in their state of mind, moving toward the collective attitude of the group.

You spread hope, joy, sense of self, etc. as you would a smile…by example. Even if no one initially responds, continue smiling. It can harm no one, and at very least is good for your own health and peace. Eventually, the smile will spread to those around you.

Hope is the companion of power, and mother of success; for who so hopes strongly has within [them] the gift of miracles.—Samuel Smiles

Another very important effort in bringing our world from its current malady is simply to acknowledge the value of every person you meet. Treat them with respect; listen to them. In respecting them (and yourself) treat them with kindness. This may not eliminate the bad news, but it makes the journey more pleasant for us all.

Union of Bonded Souls Changes Reality

Even much of science today considers viable the infinite dimensioned reality of the ancient mystics and shaman. Acknowledging the existence of these worlds and, therefore, their inhabitants, we must then consider our relationship with them. Can we, do we, interact with them? Are we carrying on active and long standing relationships across these dimensional divides even though we might not be consciously aware of those relationships?

Perhaps our fives senses are not so much perception tools, but rather tools of filtration. In my novel, Sacred Vow, I followed a speculation that our minds filter out the information that we would otherwise perceive as the “other realities.” These other dimensions exist in the very space that we incorrectly imagine our world alone exists. This is possible without our conscious awareness because each world and its inhabitants vibrate within a specific frequency range. Our mind is generally set like a radio tuner to pick up only a specific frequency…therefore recognizing one world/reality only, despite all the other ‘signals’ that are available out there.

The most adept mystics and shaman have always known about these parallel universes/realities because their finely attuned sensitivities allowed them to perceive and understand the details of the nature of their world, their primary reality. Once knowing this, they were able to perceive and acknowledge what was not their world…much like base self-awareness allows me to realize (imagine) what is me and what is not (illusion though that may be). Once these adepts knew someplace existed besides their primary reality, the interest of travel between the different worlds would naturally arise.

The interaction/travel between dimensions is possible, but has most often been limited to those unique individuals who have learned to expand their perception, alter their vibrational resonance. One of the primary characters in Sacred Vow, Ian, manages, unconsciously, to alter his resonance, but can never fully make the transfer into other worlds (never able to fully interact as a full member of that reality). This, however, is the nature of Ian, but does not imply that that there is an inherent limit to travel across dimensions.

In Sacred Vow, Ian and Katerina are soul mates—twin flames—but are completely unaware of each other as the story begins, as they live in different dimensions. They have an active, long standing relationship between them, though is has never manifested in either of their primary realities. In Sacred Vow, much as in our own world today, there is a growing rift in the Collective Consciousness causing a breakdown in the essence of reality.

According to Katerina’s culture, this rift has occurred periodically over the millennia. When it happens, Katerina’s spiritual order, the Sisterhood of Crones, performs a ritual to receive identification of the two individuals who have the strongest bond throughout the infinite realities. This time it is Katerina and Ian. The Sisterhood knows that in order to heal the rift in the Collective Consciousness, these two will have to overcome the obstacles that separate them, come together, and realize their union, their oneness.

The idea that Ian and Katerina getting together affects our collective reality is more than just “love conquers all.” Emotion is energy, and is one of our most powerful methods for generating psychic energy. This being so, a strong motivator such as love is often a catalyst for opening portals to change…whether social, personal, or energetic change.

Cause and effect are not linear. Change, or an unfolding horizon, seeks out the most receptive individuals in which to manifest its own beginning. The increasing opening in the ‘portal’ between dimensions—the expansion of our sense of reality—existed before Ian and Katerina. Their connection was the most receptive point for the connection between dimensions to manifest itself. The developing portal sought out the couple’s receptivity with the intention of expanding into the wider consciousness, beyond masters and adepts…first to Ian and Katerina, then those around Ian and Katerina, then people who know those people, until a momentum is developed so that even people without contact to any of the original players will know this unveiled truth.

Have you ever heard the 100th monkey story? This story was further popularized by Ken Keyes Jr with the publication of his book The Hundredth Monkey. Whether the story is empirical truth or not, the truth of what it is saying has been seen over and over…tipping point they now call it.

The 100th Monkey
A story about social change.

The Japanese monkey, Macaca fuscata, had been observed in the wild for a period of over 30years. In 1952, on the island of Koshima, scientists were providing monkeys with sweet potatoes dropped in the sand. The monkey liked the taste of the raw sweet potatoes, but they found the dirt unpleasant. An 18-month-old female named Imo found she could solve the problem by washing the potatoes in a nearby stream. She taught this trick to her mother. Her playmates also learned this new way and they taught their mothers too.

This cultural innovation was gradually picked up by various monkeys before the eyes of the scientists. Between 1952 and 1958 all the young monkeys learned to wash the sandy sweet potatoes to make them more palatable. Only the adults who imitated their children learned this social improvement. Other adults kept eating the dirty sweet potatoes.

Then something startling took place. In the autumn of 1958, a certain number of Koshima monkeys were washing sweet potatoes -- the exact number is not known. Let us suppose that when the sun rose one morning there were 99 monkeys on Koshima Island who had learned to wash their sweet potatoes. Let's further suppose that later that morning, the hundredth monkey learned to wash potatoes.

THEN IT HAPPENED! By that evening almost everyone in the tribe was washing sweet potatoes before eating them. The added energy of this hundredth monkey somehow created an ideological breakthrough!

But notice: A most surprising thing observed by these scientists was that the habit of washing sweet potatoes then jumped over the sea...Colonies of monkeys on other islands and the mainland troop of monkeys at Takasakiyama began washing their sweet potatoes. Thus, when a certain critical number achieves an awareness, this new awareness may be communicated from mind to mind.

Although the exact number may vary, this Hundredth Monkey Phenomenon means that when only a limited number of people know of a new way—a new horizon,—it may remain the conscious property of these people.

But there is a point at which if only one more person tunes-in to a new awareness, a field is strengthened so that this awareness is picked up by almost everyone!

Recently someone reminded me of an experience that I struggled with for a very long time (and would not be surprised to encounter it again sometime in the future). He spoke of the 'torment' of sensing imminent awareness of the reality of his true identity, but never being able to fully break through the veil of material illusion. My friend expressed a desire to either have this budding awareness leave him, or become fully conscious.

I could certainly sympathize, for the same frustration gave me much grief at one time in my life. I too had expressed that either/or demand. However, I also knew that once we achieve a glimmer of awareness of our true nature, there was no turning back.

The only comfort that I found from this situation was in coming to the perception that we are always perfection, but have become distracted from that awareness. Even the pursuit of that awareness is a distraction--therefore keeping us from the very intention of our effort. For me, when I involve myself in something that disengages that distraction--meditation (anything that relaxes me, brings me to my center)-I find the insight (and sense of my truest nature) returns.

The other thing I have found was that part of the problem was what I was using as proof of my progression. I assumed that increased awareness would make my life 'easier'. Instead, I realized that holding to that sense of connection (through day to day life) does not 'protect' me from the turmoil that life can be, but only gives me new perception about it (which often seems to reduce the impact and suffering resulting from any turmoil).

This is footage of a walk from White Oak Creek to Locust Creek, to Colbert’s Ridge Trail, up to Deep Gap, and then to the top of Winter Star Mountain, (Black Mountain Range) Yancey County, NC, USA on a chilly 02 October 2011.

Winter Star, besides having a truly magical name, is an outstanding peak of the southern Appalachians. One of the highest mountains in the eastern USA, it offers some unique hiking opportunities and some of the nicest views one could imagine. Rising starkly above Deep Gap, there are some great vistas to be had of the ridge rising over the gap, and of the nearby peaks of the Black Mountains which loom all around Winter Star.

As I walked through the mist of a mountain forest moving toward the change of season to Autumn, I considered what message the season would bring to me. Softer than the sounds of my steps and the stretching, rubbing of my pack and my gear, I always perceive the voices of those who communicate with me not through my ears, but through some deeper part of my self. When I am not trying to hear, distracted by the effort of my motion, they communicate, though not always in the abstracts of language. Sometimes there is suddenly a shift of my mind, seeing with new eyes. And I know that change was their communication.

For people and most animals still in some degree of unison with the seasons, harvest time—Fall—is a matter of storing sustenance for the barren time ahead. Whether this storage is within or outside the body, the call of the season is to collect, gather, hold onto. Winter is seen as unproductive, so all the work of achievement must be done beforehand.

I had the sense that this call was not precisely appropriate for me this season. Around me that morning the message began to seep into my consciousness, consider what the call to trees—and surely any perennial plant—might be. They do not feed off their stores during the winter, nor do they need to. Therefore their ritual of Autumn would be completely different. Their definition of ‘harvest’ would be unique to their coming experience.

Within my nervous system, for the first time I started to perceive the voice of this call unique to those not drawn to scurry about gathering as if for the last meal.

“Release. Relax.”

I was becoming increasingly comfortable with a message completely contrary to what my animal kin were hearing! With every step through the forest, mist brushing by my face, I sank deeper into the message that felt so natural to me at that moment—I sank into the call of the trees. This new perspective that I was grasping of ‘harvest’ took hold and brought new revelation beyond words.

They seemed to say to me:

Release the explicit, the outer world, active pursuit.

Reside in the implicit, that which continues on beyond term, beyond need.

Rejuvenate for another time.

Move into a state of dormancy,

pass with the least impact through the harshness of that to come.

Disengage active consciousness,

Dwell more focused in the greater Collective consciousness

Effortlessly, you will be prepared

To show forth great bloom and growth in the proper time.

I am inspired by those who are considerate and kind to others not because of some holy writ, a governing god or learned belief, but simply because they would wish to treat no one otherwise.

I am uplifted by the accomplishment of those who are at peace with their surroundings and their place in life not because they have achieved their most desired dreams, but because they are too grateful in living to worry about what more them might have.

I am grateful for the one, without training, who never lost contact with their inner self or has regained that contact. The one in whom you can see that communion in their walk and the look in their eye.

And I ask continued blessings for the one who allows themself to stumble without self-judgment, who is fully human in all their foibles, yet remains undeniably holy without pretension or elevation, whose heart is open, eyes twinkle, takes pleasure in the joys and achievements of others (even more than those of their own), and who laughs unreservedly.

Please bless us with examples of those who inspire you and make our world a better place.

Djalma spoke with a tone of concern.

“What you have believed to be thoughtful furnishing of your home has actually been a bit of energetic alchemy. From what you tell me, you have been stirring this brew for a long time, and with some purposeful intent, though subconsciously.”

Ian’s confusion showed in his face.

“There is a single, all-encompassing energy field,” Djalma continued, “call it the Whole or the Absolute. Within this infinitude are a limitless number of overlapping subsets, let’s say segmented fields, that vibrate at unique ranges of frequencies. Each field is a separate reality, which more often than not remains unseen by any of the inhabitants of the other fields because of the frequency differences between them.”

“Everything that appears to be physical within a subset of a specific reality adds a unique energetic signature onto the base resonance of that field, while remaining within the defined range of that field.”

Ian nodded once, to suggest that Djalma go on.

“Let’s focus specifically on a single reality—our illusory, ‘physical’ reality. At the very least, those things we perceive as material will resonate according to their molecular makeup,” Djalma explained. “From there, every entity gives off emanations based on what it has experienced, no matter if it is physical or not, sentient or not. In addition to this vibration, those entities, which we recognize as living, stir in their own personality or nature, which can be, for example, predatory, genteel, or whatever.

“Additionally, the resonance one picks up from self-aware entities is very affected by their individual assessments of their own experience and by their sense of self.”

“Most people have some degree of sensitivity to these psychic emanations, which varies, depending on the situation and the range of vibrations they are naturally attuned to.

“These vibrations provoke the feeling of otherwise unwarranted pleasure you might experience when you meet certain people, or the sudden weakness that may come over you in a particular environment. When acquiring possessions, we’re sometimes attracted by the resonance of the item, rather than by its more commonly perceptible characteristics.

These emanations continue to affect us, and their surrounding environment, after we acquire the piece.”

“Now, more specifically to your situation—Theoretically, if one was able to attune one’s personal resonance to another range—by internal or external means—such a person could slip from one reality to another.

“Remember back when we were talking about a base range of resonance within a reality or field? Just as everything has its unique energy signature, a grouping of items within a certain space near each other will combine to produce a collective signature. To varying degrees, almost always unintelligibly, these collective signatures affect the reality experienced by anyone within the scope of their influence.

“Whether by the unlikely accident or subconscious intention,” Djalma said, “I’m content that you have constructed a collective signature within your study that is affecting your perceived reality—or rather, periodically expanding your perception of reality.

“Now remember I said the different fields or realities are almost always invisible to each other because of differing base frequency ranges?”

Ian offered a cautious “Yes.”

Djalma smiled and continued, “More than just unveiling something from the sensory fringes of our shared reality field, the collective signature of your study seems to have created a vibrational doorway, making it possible for you to move into another reality, an alternate or parallel life.

“There are an inestimable number of realities, overlapping the very space of this room and even our very bodies. We never become aware of them, though these worlds appear just as substantial to their occupants as we believe ours to be. Only the most achieved Masters and Adepts expand their consciousness sufficiently to achieve a glimpse across these boundaries. It requires a very precise balance of vibrational signatures, external and/or internal, to perform such a pass-through.

“It’s almost impossible to stumble across exactly the right combination to produce such an access. Even though you were not consciously aware of it, you did not stumble across this doorway. I believe your visitor is not a result of chance.”

“The energetic doorway in your study is doing more than just expanding your ability to see into this parallel reality. The experience could have been limited there. But your doorway appears to have allowed you at least a partial transfer, or fluctuation, between two separate reality fields. Your ability to perceive this other reality makes it as real and accessible as the one you and I interact in right now.

“After all, what is reality except the ‘perception of choice’ at any given time?”

Writing Sacred Vow : Letting a Spirit Story flow

It seems that a lot of angst would be spared if the spiritual path—and life, in general—had an undeniable standard pattern that could guarantee we were ‘on track’. There would be an invariable voice of the intuitive, heard by everyone—that you could compare with what your friends heard, just to make sure you were tuned into the right channel. Maps could be acquired in advance of any planned spiritual progression, to do away with all the years of meandering through endless forays.

So much effort is required to first determine if the mounting need within should be responded to as a worthy motivation or merely (as we are often told) a chance to mature—in the real world a word frequently implying a directive to ‘neglect,’ ‘deny,’ or ‘rationalize’. Once certain we have a true calling to this path, we must next determine from just where the voice of one’s guiding intuitive will emanate. What language will we use to communicate with it—service, art, and dance, even words? What environment will most likely evoke its presence?

For me, one of my most powerful connections to the Absolute—the Tao, or whatever you may call the unified intelligence—has turned out to be through just the right story: something that takes the form of an extended mantra, imbued with a rhythm and symbolism resonating so personally that it seems surely to be a direct manifestation of my intuitive self. Such a ‘chant’ lures me beyond my imagined limitations, to allow me to unreservedly embrace an otherwise untouchable identity.

That being the case, I guess I should not have been surprised when over time, I became aware that whenever my higher self, spirit guides, or other such familiars have been unable to otherwise get a piece of learning across to me, one of their choice tools is to bring it to me in the form of a story—even if I am the writer of that story. No matter what I have in mind, or am working on, I find my writing activities are suddenly hijacked along a previously unanticipated path. If I am in the midst of a neglectful sabbatical from writing, my mind becomes so inflicted with an unfolding tale that I must write it down to free myself from its clamor.

These playful friends of mine (my muses) are quite talented. For, as soon as they force me back to the keyboard, or by the moment that I realize that we have taken a “wrong” turn (if I was currently in a writing cycle), my conscious mind has already been seduced into gladly following their whimsy.

As a rule, once their intended lesson is conveyed via the resulting story, I am amazed that I was not already consciously aware of the information they have presented. Quite often I am such a complete convert that I cannot imagine how I could have been unaware of this particular information previously. Sometimes I suspect that I merely want to have as much as my instruction as possible delivered in this, my most favorite way.

I can’t offer any reasonable excuse for why I have periodically withdrawn from writing when I know that is the fount of so much valuable instruction for me. The most likely justification that I can offer is what flows before me is sometimes more than I was prepared to stand up before: sometimes “the truth may be recognized before the peace to live it is realized.”

The last time I had the good fortune of a being redirected along a path of instruction, I was making my way to rework a long-neglected bit of writing: doing preparatory exercises of short stories. Without warning, one of the stories—that soon became my novel, Sacred Vow—lay hold to my attention, far exceeding my intentions. I pursued, curious about what passed before me. After hour upon hour of following this new lure, I came out of my little 3x5 writing closet in a deep meditative state. Clearly, this story would be no mere preparation for another. Shortly afterwards, my job was downsized. I now had no excuse not to follow with abandon.

My writing closet—so small that I must turn the chair away from the desk to be able to stand and open the door to leave—may be an appropriate environment for inducing a meditative state—sitting in the dark for long hours, staring at a single light before me (the computer monitor). But I think there was something more going on. For ten to twelve hours a day, over the next several of weeks, I followed where the experience led. I was enjoying the story unfolding before me, but I was ecstatic from the sensation of extended periods of being connected to my higher self. My wife said that I possessed a radiance when I walked into the house during breaks in the writing. True, I typed in the text, but I did not initially imagine their meanings.

Weeks later, hiking with a friend, I told him of some of the views of reality unfolding in this new book. After listening attentively, he said: “Do you really believe this is the way it works?”

We continued deeper into the woods, as I gave his question thought. I was a little amused at the answer I finally had to admit. I said, “Until I saw this information in the story, I can’t say that I had any such ideas. But now, yes, I think this is a truth.”

“You know how tarot cards unveils truth depending on the way the cards fall?” he asked. “Perhaps just such an auspicious falling of words on your screen is unfolding the same way.”

For just such moments of clear connection with my higher self as the writing of Sacred Vow, I gladly pay the cost of the once seemingly endless attempts to connect with my unique path and intuitive voice.
